FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 66, Number 1 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, January 2, 1980 Testing Advances Poultry Industry The average person eating eggs for breakfast, fried chicken for lunch and turkey for dinner doesn't realize how much science is involved in the economical production of these products. Have you ever thought about blood testing a chicken? Breeder flo- cks are routinely blood tested to determine if they have been exposed to or are infected with certain diseases. When the blood sample is drawn, the bird is identified by a [numbered leg band. If a bird has a positive blood test, it is carried into the laboratory for further testing and culture. These (Our guest columnist this week is W. W. Adams, D.V.M., Executive Director, Georgia Poultry Improvement Assn., Inc., P. 0. Box 148, Oakwood 30506.)___________ testing results determine the future use of the breeder flock and how the progeny from it will be handled. This is one of the services provided by the Georgia Poultry Laboratories. A poultry hatchery is the equivalent of the maternity ward in a hospital. Here, the baby chicks break out of their shells into the world. Clean up, disinfection and fumigation are a continuous chain of events in a hatchery. Just as a new baby must be protected from exposure to infection, so must a new chick. Hatchery inspectors from the Georgia Poultry Laboratory periodically go to the hatcheries to take air samples. These are incubated and a numerical count is made of the bacteria and fungi in the environment. This lets a hatchery know how good its sanitation program is working and identifies any trouble spots. The Georgia poultry industry is intimately involved in the export market. Veterinarians from the Georgia Poultry Laboratories make periodic on-farm inspections of breeder flocks and certify the flock health status so their hatching eggs, chicks, etc. can move into the export market. They also certify to the absence of certain diseases in the Georgia poultry industry so that 'Bulletin Calendar Jan. 4 - Bull Bonanza '80. Turner Co. Stockyard, 6 PM, Ashburn. Special Attention Assures Long Life for Poinsettias Poinsettias are beautiful holiday plants but with proper care they are a lush attractive foliage plant throughout the year. A well-grown plant will hold its "blossoms" for several weeks after the holidays but when the leaves start dropping it is time to give the plant additional care. They are operated on contract with the Georgia Depart- ment of Agriculture by the Georgia Poultry Improvement Association. Keep poinsettias in a draft-free location where they will receive at least four hours of direct sunlight daily. Night temperatures below 68 degrees will cause premature leaf drop. Watering should be every three or four days or as soon as the soil dries out. Do not let the plant be dry for more than one day before watering again with lukewarm water. When the "blooms" fade, reduce watering to rest the plant. It will probably lose some leaves but this is natural. Cut stems back to six inches above the soil, leaving three or four bud points on each stem. Water sparingly and soon new shoots will appear. Repot the poinsettia in a larger pot with fresh soil; feed it every month with a balanced plant food. To keep the plant from becoming too tall, cut it back again to six inches in mid-summer. Next fall, the plant will require 14 hours of darkness every day to bring the color back to the leaves. When color begins to show, bring the plant out and enjoy another season of holiday beauty. January Horse Edition coming next week Balloting Starts To Reaffirm ACC The Agricultural Commodity Commissions for Cotton, Eggs and Milk will hold referendums from January 7, 1980, until midnight February 5, 1980. The referendums will allow producers of those commodities to vote for the continuance of their commission for three additional years. Producers of the commodities will receive ballots by mail at the beginning of the 30-day balloting period. If a qualified producer does not receive a ballot, he should contact the Commodities Promotion Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 326 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334, phone 404/656-3678. Three more Commodity Commissions will hold reaffirmation votes. Referendum dates are: Sweet Potatoes, February 1 to March 1, 1980; Peaches, February 14 to March 14,1980; and Tobacco, February 20 to March 20, 1980. To be reaffirmed, the Commissions must receive a two thirds favorable vote of those casting ballots in the referendum. These referendums are held in accordance with Georgia law requiring that Commodity Commissions be reaffirmed every three years. og consumer line...
