And, its inspection for quality and proper labeling was probably done by a member of the Agriculture Department's Division of Consumer Protection field forces. District Supervisor Talmadge Parkerson checks the wrapping phase of die process at an Albany plant. He says making the Christmas candy at the south Georgia facility is a year 'round process and sometimes he feels as though he personally inspects most of the 830 million pieces processed there annually. The Georgia Egg Commission has set the period from January 7 through February 5 as the date for the 1980 egg producers' referendum. Under rules of the governing marketing order, the Commission and its check-off must be reaffirmed by a vote of Georgia egg producers every three years. The Commission's Executive Director, Robert Howell, said that even with inflation, the two percent per 30 dozen case assessment rate will not be changed. Ballots for the referendum will be mailed to producers on record with the Department of Agriculture. Votes must be returned in the accompanying preaddressed envelope and postmarked no later than February 5,1980. Trade Show Attracts Ga. Food Exporters Final touches are being put on plans for the Fifth Annual International Food & Agricultural Trade Show in New Orleans. The show is scheduled February 5-7, with the cut-off date for exhibitors' registration December 14. The show is sponsored jointly by the Southern United States Trade Association and the Foreign Agricultural Service of USDA. H8OO-282-5852 Research and Improvements Shed New Light on Pimiento Production Georgia's pimiento industry is on the upswing after experiencing a decline in production during the last several years. Labor costs and the lack of affordable mechanized harvesting have hurt Georgia producers over the last two decades. Ga.4H'ers Claim 9 National Honors Fifty Georgians attended the National 4-H Congress held recently in Chicago. The Georgia 4-H'ers were among 1600 at the session. Georgia had nine national winners who received $1,000 each for their outstanding achievement. The Georgia winners included Peggy Jones, Decatur County; Alex Park, Pierce County; Clay Fincher, Jefferson County; Lisa Chambers, Washington County; Doug Ashworth, Franklin County; and Sherri Smallwood, Forsyth County. In addition to Georgia's national champions, Steve Driskell, Rockdale County, was named a sectional winner and received an all-expense paid trip to the Congress. According to Dr. Hugh Dempsey of the University of Georgia Experiment Station, research to boost the industry is now moving forward on several fronts. One of the major factors is the development of a machine to rapidly harvest the pimiento. Such mechanization has been needed for sometime, but it has been difficult to interest equipment manufacturers in the production of such a specialized item. Dr. Dempsey, a research horticulturist, said there are also programs to improve plant varieties, utilize direct seeding methods, and accelerate the rate of germination in pimiento growing. Taking these positive factors into consideration, observers say they are optimistic about rekindling an interest among farmers in pimiento growing. Pimiento production in Georgia began near Griffin in 1911, when George Rigel, a commercial vegetable producer and seedsman, became interested in the (Continued On Page 8) GEORGIA FflRffl PRODUCTS Support a healthy economy GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Tommy T Irvin, Commissioner Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, December 12,1979 Farm employment No commercial, industrial or domestic employment permitted. December is the month for unexpected guests especially unexpected dinner guests. Avoid that panicstricken feeling as mealtime approaches. Being prepared does not require a huge grocery bill or an overstuffed refrigerator. Ideas provided by our readers will help you turn a frozen chicken or a pound of hamburger into a delightful meal. Frantic Chicken Unexpected company is coming and the only meat available is a frozen cut-up chicken. Frantic chicken just may save face! Mix 9 ounces barbecue sauce with equal amounts of water in a large skillet or electric frying pan. Add the frozen chicken, cover, and turn on high. After the chicken has thawed sufficiently, separate the pieces and reduce heat slightly, maintaining a bubbly boil. About 15 minutes before dinner, uncover and allow sauce to thicken. Serve sauce over the chicken. Total cooking time - one hour. Mrs. Nelson Cabe Route 1 Dillard, Ga. Pages THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, December 12,1979 If you had a cow that could pull your plow, provide milk for your family, fattened economically and had a good disposition you would probably be the owner of a Charolais. This breed of cattle is native to the French province of Charolles, a hill country where farmers are known to be thrifty and productive. These traits also characterize their cattle. Originally the Charolais was bred as a dual-purpose cow. Because of its strength and docile disposition, the Charolais adapted well to walking in front of the plow. This in addition to its ability to fatten economically and provide quality beef for France's gourmet taste made the Charolais breed very popular. The first importation of Charolais to the United States was in 1936 when the King ranch received several head via Mexico. The importation, however, did not continue since a quarantine was imposed during the mid 1940's on cattle coming from countries where foot and mouth disease; was known to exist. During this quarantine, Charolais bulls were bred to the best cows of other breeds. These offsprings were bred back to full-blooded Charolais. These animals were registered as purebreds but it was not until 1966 that the quarantine was lifted and Charolais from France were allowed entry to the U.S. The Charolais has many desirable characteristics. It is one of the heaviest breeds in existence. Cows average 1250 to 1700 pounds and bulls 2000 to 2600 pounds. They are very muscular animals with bulging hindquarters. Charolais are good mothers and provide sufficient milk to promote rapid growth of their calves. The animals are usually gentle, calm and easy to handle. They are a gregarious breed making them easy to work and manage. The Charolais have the ability to gain well under semi-tropical conditions which has made them particularly popular in the South. They twitch their skin which dislodges many irritating and disease-carrying insects and they possess functioning sweat glands which helps maintain normal body temperature in hot weather. Comments or suggestions: Pimiento Production (Continued From Page 1) Spanish pimiento pepper. With the help of the American consul in Spain, Mr. Rigel obtained a few seeds and in less than a year was able to plant about an acre and a half of pimientos. The first sizeable pimiento crop in the state, however, was not harvested until 1920. Production spread to several other areas of the state during the next 30 years, reaching an all-time high around 1950. During the last several years, however, pimiento production in Georgia has been steadily declining to the point that the pimiento is now sought from neighboring states to meet the demands of Georgia processors. Unlike many Georgia grown commodities, where produce must be shipped out of the state for processing, Georgia has one of the largest pimiento processing plants in the nation. To supply this plant and several others across the state, it takes 10,000 to 15,000 acres of pimiento crop production. It is, however, difficult for many farmers to justify the use of land, time and labor necessary to grow pimientos when other crops such as soybeans and peanuts are considered a more reliable investment. Pimientos are a good crop for the small or part-time farm operation, where hand harvesting can be used and the labor factor is usually a family situation. Ag History (Continued From Page 1) ing the 1870-1899 period. Currently the museum is reconstruc- ting an operating turpentine still and logging train to complete its exhibit on forest industries of the period. Long range plans include an exhibition and education center which will link this period with other parts of Georgia's agricultural and social past. Your help is needed for Georgia Agrirama to continue to improve its exhibition of Georgia agriculture. The museum depends upon legislative appropriations and private donations to supplement its income from admission revenues. Your support, through your attendance and donations, provide valuable help in preserving and exhibiting our disappearing heritage. Your gifts of artifacts and other historic items will guarantee their safe storage and preserve them for future generations. Your joining the museum as a "Friend of Agrirama" shows your support for the educational goals of Georgia Agrirama. The museum is open daily throughout the year and is located at Exit 20 off Interstate 75 in Tifton. More information on the site and special activities is available.
