FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agricultvre Market Bulletin Volume 65, Number 43 Sheep Market Strong In Ga. Georgia has tremendous potential for sheep production with our year round grazing season. Although Georgia is not one of the larger sheep producing states, we have more sheep than most people realize. The Georgia Sheep and Wool Growers Association has over 100 member producers and markets 25 to 30 thousand pounds of wool each year. Even though producers have no trouble selling their lambs locally, the association assists in marketing when requested. Interest in raising sheep is growing by leaps and bounds in Georgia, (Our guest columnist this week is Phil Meoders, President, Georgia Sheep and Wool Growers Assn., Route 6, Box 251, Gainesville 30501.)________________ from the small farmer with four to ten acres to the large sheepman. Also, the advantages of grazing sheep with cattle are attracting attention from Georgia cattlemen. A beef cattleman with 50 brood cows can add one ewe for every cow without taking anything away from the cattle. In fact the cattle do better when grazed with the sheep. Sheep eat many types of weeds thus eliminating the necessary weed clipping by the farmer. Sheep show a quicker return on investment than any other livestock. It is possible to get 100% of your investment back the first year. Sheep do not need extensive handling equipment making sheep production very attractive to the small farmer. A person with five acres can own 30 sheep and add $2000 to $3000 per year to his income. Predators, dogs, and internal parasites have been the major problems of raising sheep. However, (Continued On Page 8) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, October 24,1979 The "gold" wagon train will bring 43 ounces of the precious metal to regild the Capitol dome to Atlanta during the Thanksgiving holidays. I bought some calves two weeks ago and all three died within a week. The vet said they had shipping fever. Can it be prevented? B.T. Alpharetta Shipping fever is a broad term which is applied to a number of diseases resulting from stress and exposure to infectious viruses or bacteria. It is not unusual in calves and may be minimized, but not totally erased. The symptoms are primarily respiratory and secondly, intestinal. Animals may receive a combination of vaccines and conditioning before the first shipping experience to reduce the incidence of the disease and increase profits. Are the regulations on grocery store inspections the same in Athens as in Savannah or other towns? T.B. Atlanta Yes, the same guidelines are used by sanitarians checking food products and retail outlets across the state. If you have questions about a particular business, please let us know. I went to the store to buy soft drinks at one dollar a six pack. When I got there, the price was marked 38 cents higher. The manager said it was the paper's error and showed me a letter he had from the advertising office. How do I know who typed it? Doesn't the store have to sell the product at the published price until the paper prints a correction? B. H. Savannah The store is not responsible for the newspaper's error, although it will have to deal with angry customers resulting from the mistake. The paper will either print a corrected version or notice of the error. The Department of Agriculture does investigate false advertising in grocery stores. However, in this situation, the store did not intend to fool you. It was also a victim of the situation. Pork Surveillance Insures Safety Strong animal health and meat inspection programs by the Agriculture Department have made pork as it is produced today "a completely safe product," according to Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin. "A disease which in past years was considered rampant in Georgia has been virtually eliminated through stringent control programs of the Department," he said. Trichinosis, a disease caused by organisms carried in improperly fed or cooked pork products, is rare in the state now. The Commissioner continued, "A significant step in the elimination of the disease occurred in 1972 when prohibition was imposed on garbage-fed hogs in Georgia." There are a number of safeguard's used in the preparation of pork products now to ensure that they are disease-free, including a cooking regulation that all meats, which are likely to be eaten without further cooking, be brought to a minimum temperature of 138 degrees. Live trichinae is killed immediately at that level. Experts point out, however, that pork and most other meats, are normally cooked at a much higher temperature than the 138 degrees minimum in general preparation. Selection Underway For Poultry Leaders Nominations are being accepted by the Georgia Poultry Federation for Georgia's outstanding commercial egg producer, hatching egg producer and broiler grower for 1979. All firms engaged in broiler production, commercial egg production, or hatching egg production may select a company winner and submit the name for state competition. Official entry forms are available from the Georgia Poultry Federation, P. O. Box 763, Gainesville 30503. All nominees must be Georgia residents and nominations must be returned to the Federation by November 1. This "gallant lady", the Jersey, without doubt did more to keep Georgia and the nation on its feet nutritionally during the dark, hungry days of the depression than any other single food source. Farms across the state and nation were smaller and more numerous during those years, and, in most cases, "the family cow" was a Jersey. She, along with the Guernsey, held the leading Georgia breed spot until about 1950 when the Holstein began its climb to the top of the milk production ladder. Prior to the '50s, Jerseys dominated Georgia's dairy cattle population, making up some 70 percent of the milk producers. The total number of dairy cows in Georgia, say officials, has remained at about 130,000, but the Jersey currently represents only about 15 percent of the total number. In fact, the Jersey now ranks last in production among major breeds, but still when dairymen discuss cows that are "rich milk" producers, the conversation inevitably turns quickly back to the Jersey. She still produces far more butter fat in her milk than any other breed. The smallest in physical size of the dairy breeds, the Jersey weighs on an average of about 700 to 900 Ibs. They are wide ranging in color, from grey to dark fawn, or reddish brown with some even appearing almost black. A broad faced animal, the Jersey's small horns curve inward. THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, October 24,1979 Grandpa's Garden When you get ready to make your jack-o-lantern this Halloween, save the seeds for a tasty treat. Don't wash off the pulp that clings to the seeds. Pull out as much of the pumpkin's insides as possible and then spread the whole mess on a baking sheet. Put the baking sheet on top of a warm oven or into an oven that is cooling down. The seeds will dry in a few days. When they are dry, lightly toast them in the oven, salt and enjoy. If you have grown sunflowers for the first time this year and are now ready to hull them, there are a few tricks which might help. Put the seeds in boiling water for a few minutes so the shells will come off more easily. You can also use pliers to crack the shells. Lay the seed between the pliers as you would between your teeth. But don't crack them in your teeth or you might remember sunflower harvesting with bad memories instead of tasty ones. Natalie Jordan writes us from apple country in north Georgia. She says another delicious way to preserve apples is to make dried apple snacks. Peel apples and cut into four or five rounds per apple, like a doughnut. Cut out the center with a small biscuit cutter. Dip the slices in rose hip tea, which is available at most health food stores. Drain the pieces on paper towels and set in oven at the lowest possible setting. When completely dry, freeze in plastic bags. The animal was brought to the United States around 1850 from the small Brittish Island of Jersey in the English Channel. The Jersey is a hearty, gentle breed which thrives in virtually all sections of the country, with many also raised in Canada. Bulletin Calendar' Oct. 25 - Production Hog Sale, 1 PM. FERN FACT Those tiny balls or dots on the undersides of your fern fronds are not dangerous. They are only the fruiting spores of the fern, and will drop to tiie ground and grow into new ferns. If you want to experiment, try catching the spores on damp sphagnum moss and lightly misting the moss each day. In two to four months, a plant will appear and grow rapidly into a fern. KITCHEN PLANS Planning to remodel your kitchen? Unless it's absolutely necessary, don't ever place an appliance or the sink by itself. SheepMarket (Continued From Page 1) with the development of new fencing systems in the last two years, the dog problem has been solved. By strip grazing and pasture rotation, worm control has steadily unproved. As an indication of the growing interest in sheep production, a lamb show with almost 100 entries took place in late September at the Gwinnett County Fair. Lambs make an excellent project for kids even if they do not live on a farm. A small 4x8 pen in the backyard and a $100 investment gives youngsters and excellent short term livestock project.
