FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 65, Number 29 Biefy Ctidet Poultry Thrives on Family-run Farms Those who think the small family farm is doomed to extinction need to know about Jarrel and Marie Evans, James and Naomi Knight and Vir- ginia and Randolph Weemes. These three Georgia farm fam- ilies were saluted earlier this year as the winners of three statewide contests conduct- ed annually by the Georgia Poultry Federation, trade association for Georgia's largest agri-business. , tM^ The purpose \ mil was to find and recognize the year's best examples of the three farm-level operations (Our guest columnist this week is Billy Crider, President, Georgia Poultry Federation, P.O. Box 763, Gainesville 30501.)_____ that form the bedrock of Georgia's billion-dollar-plus poultry industry; hatching egg production, broiler growing and commercial egg production. The winners did what they did as families, on relatively small farms, to provide what Governor Busbee called "good reason to hope for the continued existence of the family farm as a cornerstone of our way of life." These contest winners, the poultry and egg producing and processing firms who nominated them, the impressive and appreciated state effort in education and research represented by the judges who selected them, and the broad range of economic activity represented by the equipment and supply firms who helped sponsor the contests are indicative of the statewide scope and importance and complex structure of Georgia's poultry business. Those of us in other elements of that business - breeding, hatching, feed production, processing, transporation, marketing, financing, supply and service, and so on are proud of and grateful to them and to all the others like them who have helped make Georgia the pacesetter in modern poultry agri-business. We are also grateful to you; the farmers, suppliers and consumers who have met our needs and provided our markets to multiply the dollars earned by our poultry farm- (Continued On Page 8) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, July 18, 1979 og consumer line.,. Can you tell me how to get the rankness out of homemade lard? I have a 50 gallon container. B.B. Homerville According to food specialists we consulted, the rankness is caused by oxidation. Once this process starts, it cannot be reversed. For best results store the lard hi airtight containers in a cool place. **** J. F., Macon: Please call for an answer to your milk question, we need an address or phone number. Does margarine have to be refrigerated in the stores? T. W. Tiger Not unless it is specified on the outside label. Many stores keep products refrigerated which do not require it. How much water is allowable in hamburger meat? L. H. Lithonia No water is added to ground beef. No more than 30 percent fat is allowed, but this does not include the natural juices which are present. Expectations High for Georgia Apple Crop Prospects appear excellent for a record-breaking apple crop in Georgia this year. Provided weather conditions remain normal, Georgia apple growers will harvest the largest crop in recent years, according to the Georgia Apple Commission. Many of the young trees set out in the early 1970's are bearing this year and mature orchards are reported full Pollination was near perfect, with an extremely high set of king blossoms. The 1979 middle Georgia apple crop appears to be similar to the 1978 volume. Picking will begin around July 25. The north Georgia crop, which is primarily Red Delicious, is up nearly 50 percent in volume over last year's crop. Harvest will begin between August 10 and 20. I bought a sandwich in a store that did not have a label or date on it. They are made and sold in that same store. G.T. Marietta Sandwiches made and sold on the premises are not required to have label ingredients or dates. They do need to be wrapped in clear paper so that you may easily identify them. Georgia tobacco season starts next Wednesday, July 18. See page 7 for Auction Sales Readers in the metro area who have questions for Ag Consumer Line may call 656-3645. Schedule Varied Tree Natural Remedy Makes Foliage Measurements Unappealing to Japanese Beetles Prompt Study A study to standardize measurements for green southern pines is underway. The weight-volume formula being considered would replace the cord measurement, as well as other guidelines, now used in buying Georgia timber. The measurements presently in use may vary from one location to another. The study of merchantable green southern pines to a seven and a four inch top and crown will hopefully develop a weight-volume formula that can be applied at point of sale throughout Georgia. The study is being conducted by staff specialists of the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, Forestry Sciences Laboratory and the Georgia Forestry Commission. If your fruit trees, vegetable garden and flowers have been ravaged by Japanese beetles, you will be happy to hear that researchers have discovered a natural enemy to the pest. An extract of the seed from the East Indian neem tree has proven to repel beetles with amazing success. Success of the neem tree extract is graphically illustrated on the soy- bean leaf. The letters 'N M' were written on the leaf with the extract. Japanese beetles ate around the protected part and destroyed the rest of the leaf. According to researchers, Japanese beetles will starve before they eat some plants treated with the extract. This is good news to farmers and gardeners who have watched helplessly as Japanese beetles strip grape bushes, roses and over 300 different plants. The first tests using the neem tree extract were made on sassafras foliage. The results were excellent. Treated leaves were practically untouched. Following these tests, experiments were conducted on soybean foliage sprayed in the field. Beetles rapidly destroyed untreated foliage but tre- (Continued On Page 8) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July 18, 197 Farm employment Want work as farm hand milker on dairy farm, 1 yr. exp., must have living quarters, prefer Atlanta area. Lay sheet on flat surface, place layer of batting on top and finally your pieced quilt. Baste around edges to hold everything in place. The quickest way to 'quilt' the quilt is to tie it. Thread a large needle with knitting yarn and make one stitch in the center of every other square. Tie the ends together a couple of times and cut. When finished, trim yarn to uniform size, about two inches. As a final touch, sew a band of corresponding fabric on all edges. To personalize, embroider your initials and the date in one corner. iiPick Ifour Own' LOCATION BERRIEN Tom Rowell S.W. Railroad St. Alapaha EARLY Larry Spann Hwy.84,1 Mi. Thirty-six times as many beetles were counted on untreated plants as were found on those sprayed with the neem extract. The neem tree is a commercially grown crop in India where the seed oil is used in medications, for lamp fuel and as a repellent for insects. For example, in India, the seeds are commonly mixed with grain in storage to keep insects out. Prospects appear good that it is only a matter of time before scientists complete their research and a successful deterrent to Japanese beetles is available to the general public.
