FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvi'n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 65 W.tt. Showing Off Prize Chickens In the chill gray, dawn, shadowy figures scurry back and forth from pick-up trucks, vans and cars across parking areas to exhibition buildings carrying crates, boxes and coops. As one enters the building, he is beset by a medley of sights, sounds, and odors. The bright lights reveal a mass of people and hundreds of chickens. Each rooster seems to be yelling his defiance to the world. There is a sweet aromatic odor of fresh wood shaving mingled with the (Our guest columnist this week is W. H. Harris, Officer, National Jersey Giant Club (Poultry Club), P.O. Box 683, Milledgeville 31061.)__________________ smell of fresh brewing coffee and the unmistakable pungent aroma of almost two thousand chickens. Among the rows and rows of coops, exhibitors preen and polish their prize chickens for that last time before the judges arrive. Every feather is subject to the sharp scrutiny of experienced judges. Near the front entrance the crew of Dr. Bill Adams of the Georgia Poultry Laboratory has set up their equipment to blood test all of the chickens in order to protect the exhibitors and our poultry industry from disease. The poultry team is always ready with a bit of veterinary advice to a breeder. This scene will be repeated all over Georgia almost every weekend in spring and fall as the numerous poultry clubs set up their meets. Exhibitors come from many states (Continued On Page 8) Export Seminar The Georgia Department of Agriculture is co-sponsoring an agribusiness export seminar May 31 in Atlanta. The purpose of the seminar is to familiarize Georgia businesses, farmers, cooperatives and individual exporters with federal incentive programs capable of boosting the state's exports. The ink was the same color as the regular bags usually are. C.G. Atlanta READ THE LABEL BEFORE YOU BUY. The onions are from similar varieties, but growing conditions here make Georgia grown sweet onions have a special flavor. Check for a Georgia sweet onion tag and/or a blue metal onion growers seal on the 50 pound bags. Adding the word "type" protects the seller. **** K.V., Lylerly: Please send your full name and address for the information you requested. Moultrie (Continued On Page 8} New Member Named To State Commission Carol Freeman of Savannah has been appointed to a three year term on the Georgia Structural Pest Control Commission. Commissioner of Agriculture announced the appointment May 1, the day the appointment became effective. Mrs. Freeman will serve as the consumer representative on the sev- en member Commission which is responsible for developing regulations and licensing pest control companies and operators. ____ These regulations Pll ^fUHTilK, are enforced by the Department of Agriculture. The wife of Dr. Thomas R. Freeman of Savannah, she is the mother of two children. Mrs. Freeman attended Armstrong College. She is active in Savannah civic and business activities, including the Savannah Symphony, the Community Children's Theatre, Habersham Woods Garden Club, Savannah Board of Realtors and the Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce. Number 20 Relief Sought For Peanut Fines Penalties may be waived for peanut producers who unintentionally overmarketed their peanut quota in 1978. Senator Herman Talmadge has introduced legislation before the Senate to waive or reduce any penalties which may be incurred as a result of misunderstanding or human error in marketing non-quota peanuts. According to Senator Talmadge, if the legislation is not enacted, Georgia peanut producers could face penalties ranging from a few dollars to several thousand based on the volume of peanuts which were incorrectly marketed. The 1978 peanut crop was the first to be produced and marketed under the new peanut program, enacted in 1977. The program requires extensive recordkeeping and separate accounting for quota and non-quota (additional) peanuts produced on the same farm. Peanuts marketed in excess of a farm quota are subject to a penalty of about 25 cents per pound 120 percent of the price support level according to Senator Herman Talmadge. The 1977 peanut program gives the U.S. Department of Agriculture no leeway to waive or reduce penalties for overmarketing of a farm's peanut quota in cases where the overmarketing was the result of unintentional human error. Congressman Dawson Mathis, Georgia District Two, has introduced similar legislation before the House of Representatives. Aubrey Owens, muscadine specialist and ornamental nurseryman,, was named 1978 nurseryman of the year by the Georgia Nurserymen's Association. Mr. Owens of Gay Georgia, was a pioneer in muscadine culture. He was & charter member of the Georgia Nurserymen's Association and has twice served as its president.
