FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 65 UJtol 9 Xwwt? In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness ... and his meat was locust and wild honey. Matthew 3: 1,4. Locust pods are the fruit of the carob tree (Creatonia siliqua). The tree is native to the eastern Mediterranean and the fruit of the tree has long been considered a source of food for animals and even humans when nothing else was available. Biblical scholars agree that John the Baptist lived on the locust pods. In the Holy Land, the locust pods are affectionately referred to as 'St. John's bread'. The carob tree is a sturdy evergreen and grows to a height of 40 to 50 feet. It is regarded as a tree of great beauty producing large clusters of tiny pea-shaped blossoms in the spring. The brown fruits which follow are filled with a sweet mucilage that protects the hard but nutritious seeds. Bulletin Calendar Mar. 15 - Spring Garden Seminar 7:30 PM. Her layers produced a whopping 3 million eggs this year. Jarrel Evans I was named the I first Hatching Egg (Producer of the j Year in Georgia. A special committee from the Georgia Extension Poultry Science Department was created to make the final selections of the participants. The nominees were judged according to the evaluation of information submitted on nomination forms and inspection visits to their farms. Georgia Research Program Extending Peach Tree Life New and improved growing techniques are pumping new life into Georgia's $19 million peach crop industry according to state research officials. A successful strategy aimed at lengthening the life span of the trees has stimulated interest in the crop and is enticing new production over the A recent joint project between four southeastern states (Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina) and the U. S. Department of Agriculture is responsible to a large degree for the new strategy. QQ consumer line... Can you tell me if these are ter- mites or ants? My exterminator tells me they are ants, but I think they must be termites. R.G. Savannah According to our entomology ex- perts, your exterminator should have a second look. The insects swarming around your house are termites. **** READERS: Spring planting time is here. Many of you are expecting mail order plants to arrive shortly. Before ordering any plants which make exaggerated claims, check with your local nurseryman and see if the pro- duct is available in your area. Sometimes a few quick calls will save you the disappointment of dealing with a disreputable company. How can I know for certain that the gasoline I am buying has the octane level posted on the pump? B. T. Toccoa You have no need to worry. Inspectors from the Georgia Department of Agriculture make regular (Continued On Page 8) From this cooperative effort, advanced techniques for subsoiling, fumigating before and after plant- ing, nematode control and methodical pruning and soil enrichment for the trees have been initiated. The new growing strategy is working according to Georgia Extension Horticulturist Gary Obenauf. "It's stimulating production in areas of the state which have been aban- doned by growers since the days when Georgia earned its nickname, "Peach State". One of the major problems with growing peaches in Georgia has been the short life of the trees. Diseases, nematodes and winter injuries have been taking a heavy toll every year, reducing the competitive value of the crop. The problems are gradually being corrected and as a result, peach growing is enticing growers who have not been traditional peach farmers. If these new producers are successful, peach experts are hopeful that the peach industry will expand further. A prediction for colder than normal temperatures in March which could endanger the Georgia crop has dampened some optimism, but, according to Obenauf, the situation is not an unusual one for the state. Peachtrees like all deciduous trees, require a certain amount of cold weather or "chilling", in temperatures 45 degrees or lower in order to bloom. Georgia peach trees have already had enough chilling and have produced many buds. All that remains to be provided is warm weather. Ray McWhorter P.O. Box 98 Trion, Ga. 30753 Dear Editor: I am 83 and farm life is all I know and it comes mighty hard at times. You can hardly make ends meet today with the high cost of seed and machinery. The food we raise is bringing good prices, but not to the farmer. There is good farmland which now is not in use. Something has got to give. A lot of farmers are trying to find city jobs or anything they might do to help make ends meet. Those farm boys up at Washington, D.C. are only asking our President and our Senators for what they are due to have. Someone should try to give them as much help as they can. The hard work they do, sun up to sun down, gives us the food we eat. Most people in Georgia, I feel sure, are behind them one hundred percent. The government gives help and money away for many things. Farming is hard work. I am sure you know that. The farmers should come first. Most of those boys lost money in 1978 and are in debt. Things in their favor should be brought to the attention of every Amercian. J. Harold Street Gainesville, Ga. [Editor's note: Helm, Inc. called our office regarding the tractor manuals.
