FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 64 GDA Pioneers Farm Service The Georgia Development Authority (GDA), was one of the pioneers in the farm real estate loan insurance field. The Authority does not function as a lender, but services and insures loans for lenders. GDA is not funded by state or federal revenues. It operates at no cost to the taxpayer. It was created in 1953 to receive the assets of the Rural Rehabilitation Corporation in the amount of approximately $1. million. As of June 30, 1978, the Authority's assets amounted to $5,492,025.00. Georgia law requires (Our guest columnist this week is Byron Kirkland, president and general manager of the Georgia Development Authority, Suite 212, 15 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, 30303.)__________________ that 15 percent of all loans insured be kept in reserve by the GDA. The restriction of this capital is the only factor limiting the Authority's service to farmers. Building reserves by earnings keeps the cost to farmers low but is a slow process. the Authority serves farmers who need loans for longer terms than banks normally offer. Loans granted usually remain in a local bank on a sound and acceptable basis, and Georgia bankers appear to like the system. There are 136 Georgia banks presently participating in the plan. The Authority works usually through banks with a few savings and loan associations and retirement systems participating. Loans are made for as long as 20 years, with applicants located in 133 counties in the state. All loans are secured by real estate. The loans are made for a variety of purposes including the purchase of land, construction of farm buildings, ponds, wells, irrigation systems and last but not least to refinance short-term debts. Farmers are excellent debt payers. The Authority has had virtually no losses in its twenty-five years of operation and there have been less than ten foreclosures. Can grocery stores sell sour cream and cottage cheese at reduced prices after the pull date is passed? M. J. Atlanta No, dairy products should be pulled. Last year a state agency came around and treated the school systems in Savannah for fire ants. Can you tell me if this is being done this year? We have large mounds on our campus. B.T. Savannah There was a Georgia Department of Agriculture program which provided the treatment service for fire ant protection last year. However, mirex which has been used in the past in fire ant eradication programs has been removed from the market by the Environmental Protection Agency. Chlordane granules or dust may be applied according to label directions. The Department hopes to resume this program as soon as EPA approves a substitute for Mirex. **** (Continued On Page 11) Survey Indicates Growth Decline Where are all the worm franchising companies going? Several months ago, according to a survey conducted by Dr. Jeff Jackson at the Cooperative Extension Service, 13 worm companies were operating in Georgia. Now, the worm franchising business seems to be in decline as fewer people want to invest in growing earthworms. Nine of the 13 worm companies Americus Hog Farmer listed on last spring's Extension Service survey of worm businesses Fined for Feeding were polled a few weeks ago. Four companies had disconnected phones Garbage to Swine and could not be reached; one had no phone; one has an answering An Americus hog farmer was found guilty of illegally feeding garbage to swine. Joe Holt was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment which was waived upon payment of a $250 fine. The penalty results from violation of the state law which prohibits the feeding of garbage to swine. Such feeding has proven to be a vehicle for disease, particularly hog cholera, in swine. The Georgia Department of Agriculture is charged with en- forcing the law against feeding service but did not return the call; one has moved to an adjoining state but volunteered that "they hadn't run from anything", and the two companies still operating had received cease and desist orders on their advertising from the Georgia Secretary of State's Office. There are other worm companies who have been operating in Georgia whose fate is unknown. One grower interviewed was disturbed. His parent company recently moved out of state. Now he must ship his worms to the company garbage to swine. The law also (Continued On Page 11) requires that garbage owners properly dispose of their garbage in Pork Preservation landfills, etc. to make garbage inaccessible to swine. Taught At Callaway Regular Hive Inspections Maintain Honey Supplies The Entomology Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture was created through the need to protect the farmers and consumers of the state from injurious insect pests and diseases. One of the areas routinely covered by the division is apiary inspection. Field inspectors on request examine hives and bees to detect American and European Foulbrood disease, wax-moth infestation and a variety of other ailments which would endanger the state's healthy bee colonies. Shippers of package bees and queen bees must be inspected once a year and issued health certificates so they may be advertised and sold as certified colonies. This provides not only disease-free interstate movement of Georgia bees, but is required of all bees entering the state. Every colony of bees should be inspected at least every eighteen months. If you have a question about your bees or want to have your hives inspected, call the Entomology Division at 404/656-3641. (This article is rhe first of a series designed to inform our readers of the many services provided by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.) The second annual seminar on "Home Preservation of Pork at Callaway Plantation" will be presented December 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the plantation. The event is sponsored by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service and Callaway Plantation and a registration fee is required. For more information contact the Wilkes County Extension office, P.O. Box 850, Washington, 30673 or phone 404/678-2332. New Wheat Variety Available This Fall A high-yielding, high-quality winter wheat variety adapted to Georgia has recently been perfected and released by Georgia's Coastal Plain Agricultural Experiment Station in Tifton. Foundation seed will be distributed this fall to registered seed producers. Named Omega 78, the seed was bred and selected over 18 years from complex crosses involving a dwarf wheat from Japan, Coker's Hadden Georgia 1123 and wheat selections from experiment stations in Washington, Idaho and Illinois. Use a sudsy sponge and thoroughly wash the hamper inside and out, suggest Extension home economists. *** Consistent Quality All over the United States, if you buy mayonnaise you can be sure you're getting essentially the same product. The various kinds of food standards set by the federal government make this possible. *** Dried Foods Home-dried foods should be packaged in dry, clean containers that are insect and rodent proof. And they should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place. Livestock feed, hay and grain for sale General rules and regulations apply. Did Ifon Kim COLD PROTECTION Blankets, boxes and other materials used as coverings seldom protect camellia flowers from cold damage, according to Gerald Smith, Extension Service horticulturist. He adds that spraying water on plants to provide a protective ice coating is not advised, either. The best guarantee against cold damage is to select the right variety and plant in a semi-shaded location. **** HUNTING SEASON Another hunting season is under way. Wear bright clothing so other hunters will not mistake you for wild game. In fact, deer hunters are required to wear 500 square inches of orange fluorescent material above the waist. Treating every gun as if it were loaded, and always controlling the direction of the muzzle, will also cut down on chances of accidental shootings. A Winter Weed Annual bluegrass is one of the most common winter weeds in Georgia lawns. You can recognize it by its light green leaves with boat-shaped tips. Check with your county Extension Service office for recommended herbicides. Diets for Elderly Almost half of the health problems of older people are related to nutrition. Their diets often lack green and yellow vegetables, citrus fruits and milk, according to Extension Service food specialists. THE MARKET BULLETIN Sweet Potatoes (Continued From Page 1) hot, sprinkled with salt. To bake, grease the skins of clean potatoes and bake in preheated hot oven (400 degrees F.) for 30 to 40 minutes. Potatoes that are greased before baking peel easily. To charcoal-broil, grease sweetpotato skins. Wrap double foil loosely around potatoes. Cook in coals for about 45 minutes. Keep warm on edge of grill. To panroast, peel potatoes and cover with boiling salt water. Cook for 10 minutes. Drain and put in pan with meat for one hour before meat is done. Baste four or five times with pan drippings. To freeze, wash potatoes and cook by any method just until tender. Dip cooled slices or whole sweet potatoes into a solution of 1/2 teaspoon ascorbic acid and five cups cold water. Add two Tablespoons fresh orange or lemon juice to each four cups mashed sweet potatoes. For candied sweet potatoes, after dipping pieces or whole potatoes, roll them in brown or granulated sugar. Pack into freezer containers, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Baked Stuffed Sweet Potatoes (makes 4 servings) 4 medium sweet potatoes 3/4 cup grated Cheddar Cheese 1/2 cup milk 1-1/2 tablespoon melted butter 3/4 teaspoon salt Dash pepper Paprika Bake sweet potatoes in 400 degrees (hot) oven 15 minutes. Lower temperature to 375 degrees (moderate) and bake 45 minutes or until tender. Cut lengthwise oval in peel; scoop out centers leaving 1/4-inch shells. Whip potatoes with 1/2 cup cheese, milk, butter, salt and pepper. Stuff into shells; top with remaining cheese. Sprinkle with paprika. Boil until lightly browned. New Wheat Variety (Continued From Page 1) Omega 78 is ideally suited for double cropping with soybeans because it matures earlier than Oasis and Arthur 71. The new variety is also resistant to powdery mildew and is expected to help alleviate the shortage of good quality soft wheat in Georgia while providing a cash crop for farmers. Foundation seed of the new variety will be distributed to registered seed producers for the Georgia Seed Development Commission, 920 Whitehall Road, Athens. Interested growers may also contact their county extension agent. CATTLE COUNTRY Extension Service livestock specialists believe the South is the nation's greatest natural grazing area. They say it has the land, rainfall, grasses and know-how to produce the quality and quantity of calves most in demand by feeders. They say that is why, since 1960, threefourths of the growth in cattle herds in the United States has taken place in the Southeast. GDA Pioneers (Continued From Page 1) Loans are repaid on an average of five years or less even though they are made for twenty years. With these rapid payoffs we are able to serve a larger number of farmers. We believe this to be an indication of the Authority's usefulness since it permits farmers to make adjustments in their farming operations after being stymied by too-short loans. The Authority's loans sometimes give farmers that extra time needed to dispose of part of their land to reduce a debt load and make necessary adjustments. The Authority is operated by a joard of directors constituted as follows: Eight members are appointed by the Governor on staggered eight-year terms. The Commissioner of Agriculture, the Commissioner of the Georgia Bureau of Industry and Trade and the President and General Manager are ex-officio members. The board is composed of men with wide experience in business and farming. As a result, the Authority promotes agriculture and rural development at every opportunity. The debt load of farmers continues to increase and the cost of production increases annually. We look forward to many more years of service to farmers and financial institutions operating in Georgia helping to serve agriculture. Worm Farming (Continued From Page 1) and unless he has 100 pounds or more, he must pay shipping charges. His current production is 48 pounds of worms. Recently the company said they wanted larger worms which run 500 to 800 per pound instead of the standard 1200 worms per pound. However, no instructions were issued on how to produce the bigger worms. During the contract period they recommended first peat moss, then sawdust, then back to peat moss as bedding they sold to the grower. Now the company has a 90 day freeze on buying worms. During the freeze period the grower's one-year contract will expire. Although the grower believes that he will someday sell some worms back to the company, recovery of his $2000 investment is doubtful. Not everybody who planned to grow worms is unhappy. Of the many potential growers who requested information several months ago, five were reached for comment. Three were glad they had not signed their contracts. One had made a reduced investment of $1800 to a worm company and is hoping to make his first sale next month; one is raising worms on his own and selling them direct to fishermen at the lake where he lives. "I'm not getting rich on it," he said, "but I haven't lost anything either." Are you a worm grower? If you have any comments on the worm business, call Dr. Jeff Jackson, University of Georgia Extension wildlife specialist at 404/542-3446. If you have moved, please send us your change of address. Be sure to include your old address. Page 11 og consumer line (Continued From Page 1) I just wanted to tell you about a product that I feel is unsafe. My husband does furniture stripping and decided to try a new method, a tool which relies on the rotary motion of tiny pinlike wires. When he finished the task, he noticed a number of the wires had fallen from the machine and were somewhere in the yard where our small children could step on them. When he complained he was told that perhaps he had mishandled the equipment and was offered another machine. He followed the directions and is careful with machines. I feel this is a dangerous tool. M. W. Stone Mountain Thanks for the warning about the machine. The agency to contact about products which you feel are a hazard is the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission. We are relaying your information to them. **** Dear Readers: After identifying some egg samples several weeks ago as quail eggs, we received letters suggesting that the abandoned nests may have belonged to a killdeer. The eggs we received were small white eggs found in a ground nest. The killdeer's eggs are mottled to camouflage them and are found in depressed areas of the ground which serve as nests for the birds. Sparrows also build ground nests, but do not produce white eggs. 1-800 282-5852 State Champion Judges Compete For U.S. Title Through continued practice and perseverance, Newton County 4H'ers Bobby Donovan, Lisa Donovan, Lisa Stievater and Kim McLurkin have advanced to one of the more coveted opportunities in horse competition, the National Competition at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. Not pictured Kim McLurkin. .The three day event beginning October 16 represents a unique opportunity for the Georgia champion judges in that the Quarter Horse Congress is one of the largest horse shows in the world. Championship 4H teams from all over the U.S. will compete in the event to determine the national champion. Page 12 Witch HojeC? When the first settlers came to this country; the Indians taught them how to use one of the most versatile of all native plants witch hazel. The plant is common from the northern most corner of the United States to Florida and is abundant throughout Georgia. The tree usually is no taller than 12 feet. It is found in deep woods and along streams. The oval leaves are three to five inches long, with toothed margins. Witch hazel has almost as many uses as a church key. It has been used as an astringent, tonic, and sedative. Witch hazel is included in poultices, infusions, ointments, drugs and cosmetics. It is recommended for stopping bleeding, soothing bruises, burns and insect bites and reducing puffy bags under the eyes. Scientifically, however, no one seems to endorse witch hazel. The medical profession for the most part says its uses are superstitious. Nevertheless, naturalists swear by witch hazel as a harmless and safe cure for many simple ailments. The witch-hazel you purchase in the store has been distilled meaning that it contains about 15 percent alcohol to preserve the solution. If you want to collect your own leaves, however, and try your hand at a home remedy, do it like the Indians did. Gather witch-hazel leaves when full grown, and spread in a warm place to dry. The leaves are then used to make a 'primitive' tea sweetened with honey or maple sugar. The tea is supposed to be good for what ails you as well as a few other things you didn't know you had. The distilled witch hazel is made from the twigs. Cut twigs in 1 12 inch lengths. Pulverize the twigs in your blender with 8 cups water. Let sit overnight. Distill the mixture and collect 2 cups. Add 1 12 cup rubbing alcohol and bottle the extract. Now you are ready for puffy eyes, sprained .ankles and tomahawk wounds. PILLOW TALK The softest pillows are filled with down from the breasts of geese and ducks. Firmer pillows have a blend of down and feathers; the more feathers, the firmer the pillow. THE MARKET BULLETIN Georgia Sweet Potatoes Nutritious and Delicious; Georgia sweet potatoes are now being harvested. Nutritious, delicious Georgia sweet potatoes are not only good, but good for you. They can be used in a variety of ways - raw, baked, candied, mashed or souffled. One medium sweet potato provides a full days supply of Vitamin A and half the daily requirement of Vitamin C. Sweet potatoes are the swollen roots of a vine related to the morning glory family. Color varies from pale yellow to dark orange-red. The darker the color, the higher the con- tent of Vitamin A. Varieties grown in Georgia include the Puerto Rico, Georgia Red, Georgia Jet, Georgia Red Jewel, Centennial and Jewel. When selecting sweet potatoes, look for smooth, plump potatoes. They should be clean, dry and uni- form in shape and color. Handle them gently and store at room temperature. Remember, raw sweet potatoes should never be stored at less than 60 degrees F. as in the refrigerator. The Dennis Mill Arts and Crafts Fair will be October 21 and 22. The mill is six miles south of Chatsworth off Highway 411. Demonstrations of spinning, quilting, soapmaking, pottery and more will be part of the fair festivities. Hours are from 10 to 6 P.M. Saturday, 12 to 6 P.M. Sunday. Admission is $1.00 for adults. Quail & Turkey Survey Requires Hunters' Help The Game and Fish Division of the Department of Natural Resources is conducting a survey on quail and turkey populations in Georgia. To accomplish this task, the Department needs the assistance of all willing Georgia sportsmen. Basic Preparation To boil, cook in boiling salted water to cover. Cover and boil until tender, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain; remove skins. Cooked potatoes are then mashed, candied, glazed, etc. To french-fry, pare medium-sized sweet potatoes and slice them into strips 3/8 inch square. Crisp the strips a minute or two in salted cold water. Drain on paper towel. Heat fat in fryer or deep skillet to 370 degrees F. on fat thermometer. Fry a few sweet potato sticks at a time in deep fat until golden brown, turning occasionally to insure even browning. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towel. Serve piping (Continued On Page 11) Master Craftsmen Lured Participants in the project need do nothing more than make notes on the number of these gamebirds seen and bagged and report these figures to the Game and .Fish biologist at season's end. This data will allow biologists to make more accurate judgements concerning future hunting seasons, bag limits, etc. Hunters willing to participate are requested to contact the Game and Fish Division, 270 Washington Street, SW, Atlanta, 30334, or phone 404/656-3522. To Crowe Springs Fair Master craftsmen from eight states will gather at the sixth annual Crowe Springs Craftsmen Fair to display and sell their crafts. There will be demonstrations in glassblowing, raku pottery, cast aluminum, scrimshaw and stained glassmaking and more. Good barbecue and homemade goodies will also be available. Crowe springs is ten miles north of Cartersville just off the Cass-White exit of 1-75. A lot of syrup is made in the North Georgia mountains come "cane strippin" time each year. One-hundred percent pure sorghum cane syrup remains today a profitable agricultural product of the state's mountain farmers, as well as an ideal excuse for a great deal of socializing and celebration. Of no lesser magnitude is the Ninth Annual Sorghum Festival which will be held in Blairsville on two big weekends, October 13-15 and 20-22. Grandpa's Garden Instead of carving your jack-olantern this year, Mrs. Tom Casey of Albany recommends drawing designs on the pumpkins with black felt-tip pens. This saves the pumpkin from insects, mold and candlewax which often make a carved pumpkin unsuitable for cooking. Mrs. Casey says the best way to cook a pumpkin is to leave it whole. Prick it several times to allow steam to escape and bake in a 450 degree oven for about one hour or until tender. The skin and seeds are easy to separate from the pumpkin and the pulp can be run through the blender for use in recipes. Although garden pests are on the decline, Albert Jones from Sumter County says the best way he has found to kill slugs is to sprinkle them with a little table salt. He warns not to get any on nearby plants as it will kill them too. If your tomato plants are still producing come frost, pick the green tomatoes and set on several thicknesses of newspaper in a cool room such as a basement or garage. The tomatoes will gradually ripen and, if you are lucky, you will have home grown tomatoes fresh from the garage on Christmas.
