FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy IrviYi, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 64 Cbfrlca Southeast Station Sticks to Basics The Southeast Georgia Experiment Station is located in Burke County, four miles north of Midville on State Highway 56. This station was established in late 1951 and farming operations actually began with the 1952 crop year. Mr. Kenneth Treanor was the first Station Superintendent but was moved to Athens as director of all Branch Stations after 6 months. Cap Barker was Superintendent from 1952 until June 1954. Orien L. Brooks became Superintendent in July 1954 and remained Superintendent until his death in February 1978. I became Assistant Superintendent in July, 1962. Our research at present is confined to corn, pecans, cotton and (Our guest columnist this week is Mr. Charles E. Perry, Assistant Superintendent, Southeast Georgia Branch Experiment Station, Midville, 30441..)___________ soybeans. In the early development of the station, we were highly diversified with hogs, poultry, dairy (with supporting forage crops) pecans, corn, cotton, peanuts and soybeans. Entomology, Plant Pathology, Nematology, Agronomy and Agricultural Economic scientists do research in connection with these crops. We have 26 scientists from the main stations doing all or part of their research work at the Midville Station. In addition, we are continuing an economic analysis of the farm management unit after just completing a fifteen year analysis of the various crop enterprises. In the book "History of the College of Agriculture of the University of Georgia" the authors state that in addition to placing research in the college and establishing the experiment station at Athens another significant research development was the establishment of three branch stations in important geographic areas of the state. Research at these locations was devoted to the application of known scientific information to the solution (Continued On Page 8) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, July 26, 1978 Number 30 LlHC What has happened to the tantalizing odor that used to come from my frying pan when I cooked bacon and ham? Back before World War II it smelled better. J.H. Atlanta A quick survey around the office indicates that we're all enjoying the smells of bacon in the morning. You may be missing out on some other scents, both pleasant and downright unsavory that you once noticed. The major difference in processing concerns the conditions of the plants, which are much* m* o*re* sanitary. Is there really any difference between standard hamburger meat and lean or extra lean? B. L. Pembroke Yes, B. L. there is a difference. You may pay more, but you get more meat and less fat. Each type of ground beef has a maximum amount of fat allowed by law. The limit for standard ground beef is 30 percent, for lean ground beef it's 18 to 22 percent and for extra lean only 18 percent at most is permitted. The Department of Agriculture's sanitarians run special tests periodically to insure that you are getting what the label indica*te*s.* * (Continued On Page 7) Tobacco Prices Promising On First Day of '78 Sales Opening day prices on the Georgia flue-cured tobacco market were 63 percent higher than last year's first day prices. 5.3 million pounds of leaf were offered on the floor the first day of trading bringing an average of $127.54 per one hundred pounds compared to $78.02 per hundred pounds on last year's opening day of sale. Fall Armyworm The increased prices are attributed to a better quality of leaf. On the first day of sales last year 23 per- Study Underway cent of the tobacco was graded 'sand' while this year only 2 percent Scientists of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station here, will conduct field studies on the fall armyworm, under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The fall armyworm causes farmers large economic losses by feeding on and damaging small grains, grasses, corn, peanuts and other legumes. The pest may produce as many as six generations in one year in the gulf states. It does not survive the winter in northern states. Scientists will try to determine the armyworm's winter habitat, spring sources of infestation and migration patterns. Principal investigator for the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station is Dr. Paul B. Martin. Sponsoring SEA scientist is Dr. Alton N. Sparks. received this low rating. For the first time this year far- mers were given the opportunity to not harvest the lower four leaves of each stalk. In doing this, they were allowed to plant more acreage and in effect plant up to 120 percent of their acreage allotments and still receive price support. The change was recommended by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and tobacco industry leaders to allow farmers to produce and market a larger part of their poundage quota in higher value upper stalk tobacco and less lower stalk tobacco for which demand and prices are lower. Latest estimates from the Crop Reporting Service predict that 125,050,000 pounds of Georgia's gold leaf will be marketed this season. Tomato Losses Can Be Gains Photo By Olin Jackson Georgia is quickly becoming an important apple-producing state. This year's crop is estimated at 24 million bushels, a slight increase over last year's 22 million bushel harvest. One of Georgia's larger apple farms is "Applegay Farm", 35 miles south of Riverdale on Highway 85. The farm, owned and operated by James R. Walker and family offers 53 acres of golden delicious, red delicious, Mollie, Prime Gold, Viking and Paula Red apples. Extending the growing season of tomatoes and preventing blossomend rot are two major concerns of home vegetable gardeners. A brown, leathery sunken area near the blossom-end of tomatoes is one of the major problems facing growers today. Called "blossom-end rot", the infection renders tomatoes useless once it occurs. With proper cultural practices however, the problem may be minimized. Water plants thoroughly and do not allow them to become parched. To conserve moisture, apply 2-3" of mulch around the plants. Spray on a 7-10 day schedule with calcium chloride in three separate applications to prevent a reoccurence of the disorder. In the fall, have the soil tested to determine the amount of lime needed. Make applications of lime in the fall in order to make full use of (Continued On Page 7) Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, July 26,1978 Among our MARKET BULLETIN readers are lots of ladies who are expert quilt makers. Tomato Losses (Continued From Page 1) the calcium the following spring. Gardeners interested in a fall crop of tomatoes should sucker older plants right away. In order to have enough growing season left to be able to produce, suckers need to be set out now. Suckers are the small growths in the fork between a leaf and the main shoot. Those growths which are five to six inches in length with bright green leaves are best. They snap off easily from the main plant. Remove all the leaves except the four younger ones at the tip. Place the suckers in a shaded area in a jar with 23 inches of water. After the plants have rooted, set them in the garden as you would any tomato plant. Suckers provide the ideal quick second crop of tomatoes. A seedling large enough to set aut in the garden takes from six to eight weeks to produce from scratch. Suckers may be set out after the one week it takes to root them. Well rotted horse fert., $25, load, del. James Mitchell, 3315 Bethany Rd., Alpharetta 30201. Ph. 475-4761. Love vine is an inappropriate name for this parasitic vine which twines itself around other plants. The slender, yellowish vines wrap themselves around the host plant taking food and nourishment until they completely kills the host plant. Another common name for Cuscuta epilinum is dodder. It is a member of the morning-glory family and originally comes from Europe and Asia. It is an annual vine that reseeds itself every year. Love vine does not produce chlorophyll so it can not feed itself. It is dependent on a host plant for survival. Eradication is almost impossible for there is no spray which can be used to kill love vine without killing the host plant as well. You can spray with Dacthal in the spring to kill the seeds before they sprout if the vine is really a problem. Otherwise, just pull the vine off your plant manually. At a distance, love vine looks like a hairy mass of orange webbing covering all the plants in the area. Besides killing plants by their parasitic suckers, they carry virus diseases from one host plant to another. All the way around, love vine is bad business. If you see it creeping toward your plants, pull it off and burn it. Whatever you do, don't let it make seed for next year. Southeast Station (Continued From Page 1) of problems of economic importance in the area served by each. Each of the branch stations also carried on farm management units involving enterprises typical of the area. This enabled farmers and agricultural workers to see the results of the application of scientific information to crops, livestock and poultry enterprises with production cost and return data comparable to commercial farming. The Southeast Georgia Branch Station continues to serve not only as a beacon for new farming ideas, but as a significant research center for the advancement of Georgia agriculture. The red or blush indicates the variety rather than the ripeness and a green or shriveled peach will not ripen properly. Choose peaches with a welldefined crease, a "peachy" fragrance and a slight softness to the touch. Please don't squeeze the peaches! Peaches bruise easily and decay will result along with higher prices for all of us. To store peaches, allow them to ripen at room temperature, then place in the refrigerator for use within a few days. For long term storage, canning or freezing is recommended. Grandpa's Garden If slugs and snails are a problem in your garden, try Preston Alsobrooks' (Woodland) solution. He recommends a shallow dish filled with stale beer set out at night. The next morning the dish will be full of dead bugs. Since the critters are after the yeast, a substitute for beer would be one teaspoon dried yeast to three ounces of water. Caution: cats are reported to be fond of the yeasttaste too. If the yeast solution doesn't attract them, try placing grapefruit rinds around the plants. The rinds will have to be replaced every two to three days. Kathleen Chambless of Colquitt suggests the best way to enjoy corn is to pick the ears as soon as it is edible. As soon as you pick it (she prefers the morning), put it in the freezer with about six layers of shucks on it. Cut off each end and stack in freezer. When you are ready to cook, take out what you need, put in water for 30 minutes. The silks come right off when you remove the shucks. Cook for 15 minutes in salt water or add salt as you eat. To improve the production from your garden, feed the plants when flowers are forming on tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, melons and squash. And, to enjoy peaches long after the season is over, here's the best idea we have ever heard. Mr. Ureal Knowles, Savannah, who has "been doin' it for years", picks the peaches off the tree and allows them to ripen to perfection. Wash and let dry. Put the peaches, whole and unpeeled, in plastic bags and freeze. When you get ready to use them, take them out and run hot water over them. The skin will slide right off without using a knife or peeler. Mr. Knowles cautions that if you run too much hot water over them, they will get soft inside before you get the peeling off. Mr. Knowles also suggests a way to dry peaches. Set the oven as low or as near to 175 degrees as possible. Cut the peaches into quarters. Place peaches in oven on a flat sheet and allow to cook until good and dry. Keep the temperature as near to 175 degrees as possible for best results. When peaches are dried, place in plastic bags and freeze. They will 'keep indefinitely when stored in this manner. We have received many requests for oldtimey garden hints. While most of these methods have not been 'research-tested' they have withstood the test of time. If you have hints to share with our readers, please let us know.
