FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 64 Aflatoxin Research Looks For Controls Research at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture aims at solving problems related to agri culture as well as making good pro duction practices even better. The university's current resear ch on aflatoxin control provides Geo rgians a clear ex ample of the im portance and re levance of the ag ricultural re search being con ducted in their state. The new Exten sion Aflatoxin Lab in Athens should be ready to serve the public by corn harvesting time and our new Mycotoxin Analysis Research Center at (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Henry W. Garren, Dean, College of Agriculture, University of Georgia, Athens, 30602). the Coastal Plain Agricultural Ex periment Station in Tifton should be operating to assist researchers by early fall. The development of these new services was made possible by funds appropriated this year by the Geor gia Legislature on the recommenda tion of Gov. George Busbee. The new Extension lab will pro vide an important new analysis ser vice to dairymen and poultry pro ducers with feed suspected of con tamination. The research center in Tifton will serve to assist scientists studying this fungus-produced poison which can infest grain. Extension and Experiment Sta tion scientists are also continuing numerous studies to investigate afla toxin control from virtually every angle. Our research teams are com paring corn hybrids to see which ones may be more resistant to moldproduced toxins including the one produced by Aspergillus flavus. Other scientists are investigating ways to prevent the occurence of toxins in feeds by using anti-fungal compounds and improved grain-dry ing methods. Dr. Dave Wilson in Tifton, study ing mycotoxin growth in corn, pe cans and cereal grains, is con sidered one of the country's leading experts in the area of mycotoxin analysis. Helps Fund Number 23 Boll Worm Study Governor George Busbee has set aside $27,500.00 from his emergency funds to match a similar amount of money from the Georgia Cotton Com mission. The funds will be used to research the biological and chemi cal eradication of the boll worm. The Governor's decision came following a meeting with Commis sioner Tommy Irvin and members of the Georgia Cotton Commission at which time Irvin pointed out that the worm problem has reached the cri tical stages and threatens to destroy the future of cotton farming in Georgia. "Since the boll worm and most of the other worms infesting our crops are related, we feel this research could help find ways to stamp out the boll worm and most likely will open doors to the destruction of other worms such as corn ear worms and armyworms," Irvin said. The monies from the Governor's Emergency Funds will match, on a dollar-forndollar basis, funds from the budget of the Georgia Cotton Commission. The research will be (Continued On Page 7) Produce Auction At Atlanta Mkt. On June 20 the Atlanta Farmers Market will initiate a new marketing procedure on a trial basis. Actually, two basic designs of cow face fly traps are recommended, a panel design and the pyramid. Vari ations of each have been used effec tively by researchers. Aflatoxin Research Looks For Controls (Continued From Page 1) Our poultry and dairy scientists are studying the effects of mycotoxins--in cluding aflatoxin--on animals to provide improved in formation for dairy and poul try producers in diagnosing the problem of feed contamin ation to allow for prompt cor rective measures. Working cooperatively with federal researchers, Dr. Roger Wyatt and other Georgia scientists are also studying the effect of the mycotoxin parasite infection in poultry on the susceptibility to other diseases. In another cooperative study, our re searchers are testing for genetic selection in resistance to this compound in animals. Aflatoxin infestation hit Georgia worse than ever be fore in 1977 due to lowered resistance in crops caused by the combined stress of the ex tended drought with high temperatures and extreme in sect damage. Since we hope these stressful conditions will not be repeated this year, we would not anticipate the afla toxin problem to be as ser ious. The Extension Aflatoxin Committee, headed by Dr. Johnny Crawford in Tifton, suggests the best approach to prevent aflatoxin growth is to use production practices which prevent growth stress and physical damage to crops. This would include early planting and harvest along with adequate ferti lization and insect control and irrigation if needed. Timely harvest, the preven tion of combined damage and adequate drying and storage are recommended to prevent mold growth and aflatoxin contamination during grain harvesting, handling and storage and feed man ufacture. Gov. Helps Fund Boll Worm Study (Continued From Page 1) conducted by the University of Georgia and its Experiment Stations. Dolan Brown, chairman of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton and Commissioner Irvin felt that Governor Busbee's committment of $27,500.00 to fight the war against worms will give far mers in Georgia greater in centive to see to it that agri culture continues to be Geor gia's number one industry. Right Temperature The recommended tempe rature for the fresh food com partment of a refrigerator is 38 to 40 degrees. PageS Wkal 9ft Cefew? THE MARKET BULLETIN Although celery is usually considered a vegetable, it is also counted as an herb. Celery is an ancient plant. It probably originated in the Mediterranean area. It grows wild in marshy places over large areas of Sweden south through Europe, Algeria, Egypt, and Asia Minor. Celery was known to Greeks and Romans as a medicine. It was not used as a food or seasoning and whether it was cultivated is unclear. As late as the 16th century, celery was identified as a medicinal plant only and referred to as "an herb eaten to purify the blood." Celery was brought to the American colonies sometime in the early 1800's and has become a popular plant in many home gardens. In the South, celery is considered an earlyspring or winter crop. Celery leaves can be dried and used as an herb, as can celery seed which is used especially in soups and pickles. Celery seed tea, an old folk remedy, is made by boiling one ounce of seeds in one pint of water until reduced to half a pint. Strain and enjoy. I would like to have buttermilk available in small cartons in the grocery store to use in baking. Is this regulated by law? Many people use this size. J.L. Marietta No state .law regulates the size of buttermilk cartons displayed in the grocery store. Supply and demand coupled with shelf space determine product availability and arrangement. You may buy small cartons from a restaurant and if your wishes are made known to the store manager, perhaps the situation can be changed where you shop. **** My husband bought some gas last week at the self-service station near us and was overcharged on the credit card. He bought 10 gallons at 59.9 cents per gallon and was charged $6.84. B.T. Atlanta We contacted the station and you have received a refund on the amount overcharged. The pumps were also checked for accuracy and were found to be working properly. Apparently, the error was a clerical one. Is it illegal to own a chipmunk as a pet? We have had one for about 4 years and someone told us there was a law against it. L. R. Athens The Department of Agriculture doesn't have any regulations against these animals as pets, but the Game and Fish Division of the Department of Natural Resources does. You will need to make an application for a permit with their office. I want to start a business renting horses to ride? Are there any special restrictions? B.T. Bainbridge None from this department. You may want to write the State Revenue Department for information on sales tax and check with your local courthouse for business license requirements. The Department of Agriculture does check into any complaints concerning abuse of horses, so treat 'em right. **** How do I register brands for my cattle? C.M. Cow Face Fly Traps effective, is constructed of three rectangular sheets of plywood 24" x 24" x 24" nailed together at the sides and painted with a glossy white latex paint. (See figure 1.) The plywood is then covered with a clear .005 centimeter thick plastic sheet which is taped down and coated with a sticky adhesive paint. The adhesive recommended by USDA researchers is commercially known as Tack Trap' and is pro duced by Animal Repellents, Inc., (Continued From Page 1) 1016 Everee Inn Road, Box 999, Grif fin 30223. The pyramids perform best when placed on a post with the base approximately three feet above the ground. It may also be necessary to protect the traps from cattle with a strand of barbed wire, etc. as cattle will eat the adhesive. The plastic covering should be stripped off and replaced at least every three days as it soon becomes covered with flies. Panel Trap The panel trap has also proven effective in the control of cow face flies. It is constructed of a 24" x 24" sheet of three quarter inch thick plywood painted on both sides with glossy white latex paint. Bolt the panel to a stake one yard in length and drive it into the ground so that the panel is supported verti cally with its bottom edge 24 inches above the ground. (See fig. 2.) Cover the panel as before with a sheet of .005 cm thick clear plastic and paint with the sticky adhesive. The plastic and adhesive should be replaced after 24 hours. Both face flies and stable flies re- 30l spond to light similarity and are therefore attracted to the white sur- faces covered with the clear plastic, according to researchers. Plywood and styrofoam surfaces do best. Researchers also discovered that the panels which faced east cap- tured 40 percent of the flies, while panels facing south caught 43 percent, west 10 percent and north 7 percent. 24 inches .bolts .2- Place traps in clusters of six to twelve per herd of up to 50 cattle. If you have further questions regarding these traps, you may write the researchers Lawrence Pickens and Dr. Richard Miller at Building 177-A, BARC-East, Beltsville, Maryland 20705.
