FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvfn, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 64 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, May 24, 1978 Number 21 Catfish Farming Still Good In Ga. Is this a hobby or a business? Often hobbies become businesses, especially if you are producing an excellent food product such as catfish. The catfish pond or "smokehouse" pond has provided for family and friends for generations and will continue to do so. Large scale production of catfish though requires different methods. Cage growing of channel catfish has become more prominent due to a new system of aerators. These aerators solve the (Our guest columnist this week is J. Foy Gilbert, Secretary, Catfish Farmers of Amer- ica, P.O. Box 321, Thomoston, 30286.) oxygen problems which have plagued growers in the past. It is generally agreed among growers mat mechanical aeration is the answer to intensive culture in open ponds or cages. The F2 generation of channel catfish producing 4,000 pounds per acre per year proves the method works. In addition to aeration, the major concerns for the farm ponds are average flow and water-shed or runoff area. These factors determine the stocking density for healthy growth and ample oxygen supplies. Clearly, Georgia catfish growers are not ready for restaurant chain supply although many local restaurants are featuring these delicious farm-grown catfish as regular specialities. These fish are usually purchased from local growers. Processing on a large scale has not proved profitable as a business endeavor thus far. Usually there are not enough fish in a specific area to support a processing plant. In addition, the draining of the average 1 to 10 acre farm pond is unpredictable and the timing schedule for live sale or processed products is plagued by water depth as well as the area covered. Of primary importance is the need for each grower to understand his production and sales requirements and potential. Catfish farming in Georgia, as good as it is, is still a local business. Wtot 9 Taking Care Of The Garden Cwfaw Bewt? Durj ng Tne Summer Months Castor bean plants are also known as mole beans because they are reputed to get rid of moles. The plant itself is grown for the sake of its handsome leaves which are lush and tropical in appearance. Castor bean plants grow to a height of 15 or more feet in one season. They are.annuals in Georgia and must be replanted every year. Ricinus communis is native to tropical Africa. It is a fast growing plant and is reputed to be the 'gourd' referred to in the Bible. "And the Lord God prepared a gourd and made it to come up over Jonah that it might be a shadow over his head." Jonah 4:6. The seed pods of the castor bean are extremely attractive. There are several seeds sheathed together in a red prickly pod which appears in late summer on a stalk. These attractive seeds however are deadly poison and if eaten can cause death. An oil extracted from castor bean seeds, however, is very beneficial to medicine castor oil. The plant itself is completely safe and is an extremely attractive summer foliage plant. After all danger of frost has passed, plant the seeds in deep, rich soil in an area that is sheltered from the wind. Gardening provides never-ending rewards. It is also a never-ending job. To be sure you keep up with what has to be done now, here is a checklist of things your garden needs. Severe pruning of overgrown shrubs should have been performed in March, but there is still some pruning to be done. Azaleas that have already bloomed can be shaped now. Long stems protruding above the canopy of the plant should be cut back below the top canopy of leaves. Other early spring blooming plants such as forsythia, flowering quince, spirea, etc. are also ready for pruning. In anticipation of more dry weather, it is advisable to check around your plants and add two inches of pine nuggets or pine straw mulch where previous mulch has become skimpy. Mulches not only aid in moisture conservation but also discourage weed growth. A general fertilizer suggestion for woody plants is to apply 1/2 tablespoon of a fertilizer such as 16-4-8 or 12-4-8 per foot of plant height in March, May, and July. Spread the fertilizer evenly around the plant extending out beyond the spread of the branches. Newly planted container plants will generally not need fertilizer this summer since they have probably already been fertilized at the nursery. Annuals should be fertilized monthly during the growing season at the rate of one teaspoon of a general fertilizer such as 10-10-10 per square foot. When you buy a product called "meat and gravy," can there be more gravy than meat? This happened to me. M. H. Atlanta There may be more gravy than meat, but it shouldn't happen. Any pro- duct labeled "meat and gravy" must contain more meat by weight than gravy, although the differences may be small. If it says "gravy and meat" it will have more gravy than meat whichever product is listed first should be primary. **** OOPS! Last week hi Ag Consumer Line a typing error occurred. To get rid of spurweed hi your yard, use St. Augustine and centipede weed killer, not grass killer. Ag Consumer Line is a service of the Department of Agriculture Consumer Services Division. If you have a consumer question regarding programs regulated by the Department (food, bedding, exterminating, scales, gasoline, seeds, etc.) write: Ag Consumer Line, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Suite 300, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334 or call 1-800-282-5852. Please include your address and phone number in case additional information is needed. We will publish only your initials. Woody plants are best watered by hand with a garden hose as opposed to sprinklers. With sprinklers, oftentimes only the soil surface is wetted. It is important to completely wet the whole rootball and this involves wetting at least the top twelve inches of the soil. Once a plant is watered thoroughly then it is not necessary to re-water until the soil begins to dry. Dr. Harry G. Ponder Extension Horticulturist Tobacco Meeting The 32nd annual membership meeting of the Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation will be May 26 hi Raleigh, North Carolina. Horses, mules, ponies for sale People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. Hie MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication. All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days. AT STUD At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four tunes a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be July 5, deadline June 26.
