The gathering of some 2000 marketing executive and personnel will mark a first for the southeast. Every year, hi the southeast, more and more agribusiness firms enter a growing, but challenging, market. And a very important ingredient in their staying power is marketing. The field of agribusiness marketing is the fastest growing in agriculture today. And the National Agri-Marketing Association is the (Our guest columnist this week is Frank Gilleland, President, Southeast Chapter, National Agri-Marketing Association, P.O. Box 2210, Atlanta 30301.)_________ only professional organization serving all of agricultural marketing. In addition to 2000 members nationwide, NAMA has 25 regional chapters. Each chapter holds monthly meetings, with programs centered on items of interest effecting agri- 'Iture and marketing. Our 70 memiiers reside in Georgia, Florida, labama, North and South Carolina. Membership includes people in agri-marketing companies responsible for corporate and product management, marketing, advertising and sales; executives and members of advertising firms, public relations firms; marketing consultants; publishers, editors and sales representatives of print and broadcast media; faculty and students of universities offering agri-marketing and communications programs. Yearly short courses provide educational programs for junior and senior marketers of agribusiness firms. Advertising and marketing competition awards the best regional and national campaigns every year. Advertisements in this column are limited to those dogs which have been specifically bred or trained for use on the farm. Service Directory Helps Disabled A directory of comprehensive services for Georgia's development ally disabled citizens is now available for use in communities throughout the state. The term developmental disabilities refers to persons with autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and mental retardation. The directory was designed so that persons or families affected by these disabilities can find the services available to them in their own communities. In addition to human services, the directory also lists accessible hotels, motels, recreation areas and transportation. For more information on these community services contact your local mental health center or training center for the mentally retarded. Know Your Soil Conditions It Saves Money and Trouble Soil surveys can help homebuyers determine soil-related hazards such as erosion, flooding etc. that would affect their homesite. They can also help farmers estimate the potential crop production of his land. This house was built on a clayey soil that shrinks and swells severely. As the soil absorbs water it expands. Movement of the soil under the foundation cracked the wall. SBA Update Accepted 8733 for $823.7 million Approved 7573 for $351.7 million Disbursed 4642 for $129.9 million Many areas now used for houses were used for farms, woodlots and pasture just a few years ago. Some of these areas are on the flood plain of a stream. The stream may overflow only once in five or ten years but the chance of eventual damage is high and may get higher as more development takes place in the upstream drainage area. Soil surveys show the extent of floodprone areas and indicate the hazard of flooding on soils in such areas. A seasonally high water table is a hazard in many areas. The water table may be at safe depth most of the year but rise during the wet season. If the water table rises close to the surface, basements may be flooded, septic tank absorption fields may fail and plants may be damaged or killed. Soil surveys indicate whether soils have a seasonally high water table and give the depth to the water table. If your house is built on certain kinds of clayey soils the foundation may shift or settle unevenly and walls, plaster and foundation may crack severely. Some clayey soils expand as they absorb water and shrink as they dry. This shrinking and swelling can move a house several inches up and down. A soil survey will give the rate of shrinking and swelling potential of the soil. Septic tank absorption, erosion, bedrock are all indicated in soil surveys. If the homeowner is aware of potential problems he can make (Continued On Page 8) Intl. Trade Show Attracts Exporters Hie incredible edible egg will be honored in Georgia during February egg month. Pages What Although peonies do not bloom in winter, they are associated with cold, cold climates. In northern latitudes they are among the most popular garden flowers grown because of their winter-hardiness and ability to thrive in areas where the ground stays frozen most of the winter. Some peonies are grown in Georgia although our climate seldom provides the sufficient number of subfreezing days to make the plant prosper. However, since it appears our winters are getting colder, peonies may gain in popularity in years to come. Peonies produce beautiful flowers and foliage. The foliage will remain green throughout the summer after the spring-blooming flowers have died. At frost, the entire bush dies back, sometimes overnight, but will return bigger than ever with the first warm days of spring. These are long-lasting perennials often producing beautiful blooms and foliage for up to 30 years. Peonies were named after Peaon, the Greek god of healing. The roots of the plant were believed to cure almost all aches and keep away devils and evil spirits. The roots are most unusual in appearance looking more like a tree root than a perennial flower. There is a central crown just below the surface with several heavy wood-like roots growing out and down to secure the plant in place. A PROSPEROUS GEORGIA (1920) You may talk of a prosperous Georgia But I have something to say That I hope will set folks to thinking And bring a better day. Our meat comes from Chicago Our bread comes from the west Our peas from California When Georgia grows them best. Our apples come from Washington Our syrup from New Orleans Our dry goods come from New York And Oregon sends us beans. Too many folks are living Out of paper sacks and cans For they have quit farming To be city hired hands. You'll find no better climate Tho' o'er the world you roam But Georgia will never be prosperous 'Till she learns to live at home. Mrs. Lillie B. They come in a variety of sizes and colors but their living conditions are universal: warmth, moisture and food. In Georgia there are principally four kinds of roaches: German, brown-banded, American and Aus- tralian. The first two bugs are small, usually about half an inch long. The latter two are big reaching a size of up to two inches. Roaches live in cracks around sinks, cabinets, behind loose baseboards, inside drawers, in the motor compartments of refrigerators and underneath tables and chairs. They Soil Conditions (Continued From Page 1) German Cockroach decisions that will save him time, money and grief in years to come. FARM PRODUCTION The farmer uses soil surveys in much the same way as the homeowner but he is also interested in knowing what crops will be best supported by the soil on his farm. Soil surveys include estimates of average yields per acre of the principal crops. Soil surveys can help determine the type soil management needed to obtain the best possible yields. For example, soils low in plant nutrients require more fertilizer and sloping soils generally cost more to farm than level soils. Clayey soils require more labor for seedbed preparation than loamy soils and delays in planting due to weather conditions are often greater on clayey soils. Soil surveys for Georgia counties are published by the Soil Conservation Service. Each survey has maps that show the location of each kind of soil in the survey area. The soils are described and their limitations for many uses are rated. By identifying the soil area in which your land is located you can determine the best place to build your home or plant your corn. To find out whether a soil survey of your area is available call your local Soil Conservation Service (USDA). The German cockroach is by far the most common roach in Georgia. It lives its entire life cycle within the confines of the house. hide in the daytime and come out at night to feed. The best prevention for roaches is to keep everything clean and dry. Roaches grow and reproduce best where there is dirt, grease and moisture. Even clean homes can be infested with roaches brought in with the groceries, the most common carrier being bags of potatoes. Empty soft drink bottles are particularly appealing to roaches. There are two insecticides which are recommended to get rid of roaches: Baygon and Diazinon. When purchasing roach repellents, check the list of ingredients for either of these insecticides. Use according to label directions. There are several home remedies used in the fight against roaches. One way is to place food scraps in a wide-mouth jar and fit a paper funnel into the top. Roaches will scurry to the food but will not be able to get back out. Also borax sprinkled where roaches hide has been recommended as an old-fashioned but effective cure to roach problems. Did IJwi KKOW? MORE FIBER Eating foods in their original state is one of the best ways to get more fiber in your diet. Extension Service home economists point out that refined foods have lost most of their fiber. So eat raw fruits and vegetables with the skins on. Overcooking breaks down fiber. Starting the day with a bowl of bran cereal and in- cluding whole wheat bread on your menu increases fiber intake. A soil survey can help establish soil productivity ratings for crops grown in your county. Such ratings are helpful in determining the com- parative value of a given farm within the county. MOVING SHRUBBERY Sometimes it's necessary to relocate shrubbery around the house. From now until February is the time to do it, according to Extension Service horticulturists. Protect the root system as much as possible and transfer the plant immediately after digging. The new hole should be 1 1/2 times as large as the shrub's root system. Add organic matter to the new hole and keep the plant thoroughly watered. Wednesday, January 11,1978 'Bulletin Calendar Jan. 12 - Beef Short Course, Statesboro. Jan. 14 - Ga. Charolais Assn. Ag Marketing (Continued From Page 1) present current facts, figures and projections on agriculture as they affect national policies, economics, finance, business and international relations. Ag Day is a nationwide effort begun by NAMA to build an understanding between agriculture and the American consumer. With John Wayne as National spokesman last year, mayor cities became targets of hard hitting support for the farmer and American agriculture. Ag Day has expanded beyond NAMA. Other organizations have joined in supporting an Ag Day Foundation which will raise $80,000 to promote Ag Day on March 20, this year. We need your help and support. Despite our numbers we are missing many important agri-marketing folks from the southeast. - The National Conference is open to all. We think you'll find our total marketing program worthwhile to you. If you would like more information on NAMA, Ag Day or the National Conference please contact me.
