FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 64 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, May 10, 1978 Number 19 Summer Insects Are Coming, Famous Forage Developed Here Just because something is good doesn't mean people will accept it. Also, few things are so good they cannot be improved upon. These seem to be truisms where new developments from agricultural research are concerned. In particular I am thinking about the development of improved strains of bermudagrass. Perhaps no other development at I the Coastal Plain I Station has received wider acclaim or has had a more far reaching impact on southern agriculture than Coastal berm- (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. E. Broadus Browne, Director, Coastal Plain Ex- periment Station, Tifton, 31794.)_____ udagrass. Today, this strain of bermudagrass is planted on millions of acres throughout the whole southeastern coastal plain of the U.S. It has put millions of extra dollars in the pockets of southern cattlemen. You would think anything that good would have been snapped up in a hurry as soon as it was available. Not so. When Dr. Glenn Burton and his associates first released this new hybrid variety of bermudagrass in 1943, they had to beg people to plant it. It was nearly 1950 before it was planted to any significant extent. It was also extremely difficult at that time to get anyone to produce and distribute certified sprigs. The first person who, very reluctantly, began producing and distributing certified Coastal bermudagrass sprigs now says it actually turned out to be his most profitable venture. It was the drought year of 1954, eleven years after it was released, that finally put Coastal bermudagrass on the map. That year Coastal produced six times as much forage as common bermudagrass. Previously it has produced only about twice as much. For over 30 years Coastal bermudagrass has reigned as the premiere perennial, warm-season forage grass throughout the South. Many plant breeders would have been satisfied with such an outstanding (Continued On Page 8) Prepare To Defend Yourself Whether camping, hiking, or just having a backyard cook-out, insect pests can be an irritating problem. Before getting involved in a camping trip or any other form of outdoor recreation, plan ahead. Certain pests can be exp- ected so go prepared. In the spring, no-see-ums (sand- flies), black flies (buffalo gnats) and Mother's Day mosquitoes are annoying. In summertime, chiggers, ticks and deer flies join the ranks. In the fall, perhaps Georgia Peach Queen Lynne Adkerson has a busy season ahead promoting Georgia's 1978 peach crop. Peach harvest will begin about May 15 in south Georgia and continue until around August 1 in the Piedmont area. All signs point to a full peach crop this year so get ready to enjoy famous Georgia peaches. Operating Rules For Ga. Markets A meeting to adopt changes in operating rules and regulations for several Georgia State Farmers' Markets is scheduled for May 17,10 AM, Room 201, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Atlanta. Anyone wishing to present their view concerning proposed changes should plan to attend. Notice is given of intentions to adopt certain local operating rules (Continued On Page 8J On the second Sunday in May many families and churches across the nation make a special point of honoring mothers. This much deserved day of respect and recognition became a national observance on May 9, 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending that Congress and the executive departments of the government observe Mother's Day. Many people follow the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother's Day. If a person wears a colored carnation, it means that the mother is living. A white carnation indicates that the mo- ther has passed away. Georgians should all re- member their mothers on this special date, and recognize the irreplaceable role the matrons of the family provide in the family nucleus. the most troublesome pest of all is added the yellowjacket. Pests that sting, bite and spread disease can spoil an otherwise en- joyable outing unless appropriate measures for protection and repulsion are taken. Insect repellents can be very effec"V.tive if used correctly. They provide protection against mosquitoes, biting flies, gnats, chiggers and ticks. These deterents are known as 'general-use' repellents and usually contain one or more of the following ingredients: deet, (N, N-diethylm-toluamide), ethyl hexanediol, dimethyl phthalate, dimethyl carbate or indalone. Repellent labels should be checked for these ingredients. Deet is generally considered to produce the best results. Proper clothing is a definite plus. It should be selected to coincide with each outing. Loose clothing which fastens at the wrist, ankle and neck will keep out most swarming pests including ticks and chiggers when used with a good repellent. When camping or picnicing, take care in selecting the camp or Is it legal for stores to place higher price tags over existing ones on items already on the shelves? picnic site. It still wouldn't crank and when we checked there was water in the tank. The station owner said the problems were with our tractor, but with gas from another station it ran perfectly. Mrs.W.L. Tifton Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention. A field force inspector is checking out the information and station you mentioned. A copy of his report will be mailed to you, and action will be taken if necessary. **** (Continued On Page 8) Extended To May 15 The deadline for signing up for acreage set-asides with ASCS has be'en extended from April 30 to May 15. Farmers who miss the deadline will not be eligible for financial assistance should disaster strike Georgia's crops again this year. For information contact your local ASCS office. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, May 10,1978 Dear Editor: Just a note to relate to you and your readers, some- thing that has been happening to me during the running of my goat ad. A lady calls and says she wants a milking doe. I told her one was sold and one was due to freshen soon. She says she will wait and during the short two weeks she phones, long distance, several times to find out how things are, etc. After several long distance calls on my part to inform her the doe had freshened, I'm told they bought elsewhere. I in turn, turned down 2 other offers. Beware don't take people's word take a deposit. They will think twice about tying something up. Burnet is very similar in many ways to borage, especially in its culinary uses. It smells like cucumbers and is added to salads, iced drinks and cheese spreads for a delectable flavor enhancer. Burnet though is a perennial and self-sows readily. Although it is native to Europe it is also found growing wild in the United States. In some areas it has been regarded as a weed but only because folks did not know how to enjoy the precious herb growing in their gardens. Besides its culinary uses, burnet has an interesting medicinal history. It is said to be a natural coagulant when applied to cuts and wounds. It also has the reputation of slowing the flow of blood from a wound. Legend tells us that a Hungarian king used burnet to heal the wounds of 15,000 wounded soldiers after a great battle. Also, American Revolutionary soldiers are said to have had a cup of burnet tea the night before entering battle so if they were wounded they would not bleed to death. Burnet grows in full sun and well drained soil. Use only the tender new leaves as they become tough with age. Leaves should be pulled before greenish-red flowers appear. Ga. Over the years the breeders, agronomists, plant pathologists, animal scientists, agricultural engineers and others working on forages at the Station have been looking for something even better than Coastal. From time to time a new release, better in one way or another, has come from their efforts, but none has seriously challenged Coastal. These people, and especially Dr. Burton, were sold on the second truism, "Few things are so good they cannot be improved upon." This year, 35 years after Coastal, time to divide and replant.
