Land Bank Serves Farmers' Needs 
 
Georgia agriculture has ex- 
 
perienced a very volatile situation 
 
relating to demand, prices, weather, 
 
and the cost of production inputs. 
 
The drought situation has played 
 
havoc with potential yields of cotton, 
 
corn, peanuts, tobacco, pastures 
 
and fruits and vegetables 
 
throughout the state and most of the 
 
Southeast as well. 
 
This will create financial 
 
problems 
 
many farmers this 
 
year. Crop losses 
 
and reduced 
 
yields will force 
 
an increasing 
 
number of farm- 
 
ers to refinance 
 
loans over longer 
 
periods. Damage

creases in credit problems and delinquencies, but we don't think they will get out of hand. These problems are manageable. Delinquencies are about two (2%) percent of outstanding loan volume. That's up by about one-third from what it normally is. Loan losses for PCAs and Federal Land Bank Associations are very nominal. 
Loan refinancing because of the drought may increase 10 or 15 percent this year for the associations. This year in Georgia, the Land Bank Associations at the end of July had over $841 million in loans outstanding to over 20,000 borrowers. PCAs in the state served over 14,000 member-borrowers with over $619 million in loans closed by the end of July. Some of the operating loans in the PCAs will be extended into 1978, and some farmers may shift to the Land Bank in order to repay over a longer period of time. 
Farmers should work closely with their Farm Credit officials. Debts cannot be forgiven, but our farm credit people want to help farmers

Agrirama Seeks 
Farm Animals 
Georgia Agrirama Development Authority is accepting donations of mules, horses and other appropriate livestock for use on the historical farm. 
Georgia Agrirama also needs the help of concerned citizens in preserving old, near extinct types of farm animals which were significant during the late 1800's. Appropriate animals will be used on the living historical farm and in a backbreeding program to preserve specific types of livestock.

Equine Meeting 
Equestrians and horse enthusiasts throughout Georgia are invited to attend a social meeting sponsored by the Georgia Equine Board, October 14, 1977 at the BB Park Ranch on Old Peachtree Road in Duluth. 
Members of the State Equine Board and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin will be on hand to discuss problems of Georgia's horse industry. 
 
Hunters Take Care 
 
Use Good Safety Sense 
 
Thousands of people will take to the outdoors this fall to hunt wild game. 
 
With all these people returning to nature and toting weapons, hunting safety 
 
can not be overemphasized. 
 
Besides the obvious danger 
 
associated with firearms, there are 
 
other hazards to consider. Heart at- 
 
tacks take more lives on hunting 
 
trips than gunshot wounds; falls 
 
from trees, ledges and slopes take 
 
their toll and fatigue from over- 
 
exertion exposes the hunter to ad- 
 
ditional and unnecessary risk. 
 
Many hunting accidents can be 
 
avoided by following these hunting 
 
tips: 
 
1. Treat every gun as if it were 
 
loaded at all times. A safe gun- 
 
handler will always check every 
 
firearm by opening the action and 
 
looking and feeling inside the 
 
breech or chamber to make sure 
 
it's unloaded. 
 
2. Always keep the muzzle pointed in 
 
a safe direction. A safe hunter 
 
will never allow the muzzle to 
 
point at himself or members of his 
 
party. 
 
3. Be sure of your target and what's 
 
beyond. Never shoot at a sound,

Miss Apple Queen U.S.A. contest in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania October 6-8. Joy is the daughter of Mr. and 
Mrs. Paul Burgess and will for the next year act as an official representative of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission 
for Apples to promote Georgia

One little pumpkin was too small, the biggest pumpkin 
was too soft but the pumpkin that went to the big pumpkin contest was just right. Georgia farmers and gardners throughout the state looked high and low for the perfect pumpkin. The land of Lilliput [located somewhere around Dublin] sent in the largest pumpkin hi their kingdom but 
the truck broke down en route. Mrs. Mack Clark of Ashburn reported a monster pumpkin in her field estimated to weigh 150 pounds. Our pumpkin pickers hurried to her 
home only to discover that enemy mushmakers had been busy inside the monster pumpkin. The perfect pumpkin, 
 
grown by Mr. Randy Anderson of Marietta, weighed 116 pounds and was a real beauty. Professional pumpkin handlers Jimmy Smith and Carl Manley from Delta Airlines carefully loaded Georgia's perfect pumpkin for 
its flight to New England and national competition. At the big pumpkin contest, Georgia sadly lost to a 290 pound yankee pumpkin from New Jersey. The 1977 pumpkin 
contest may be over but we're planning right now to take the title next year. Watch for information in a later issue on how to grow a winning pumpkin. Prizes will be awarded next year.

Wkal Hog Peanut? 
 
Hog peanuts are perennial vines native to more than two thirds of the United States. Their natural habitat is rich woodlands, cool damp thickets and stream banks. 
The bean-like vine has stems that climb on surrounding vegetation by twining. In the summer months the vine produces white to lavender flowers which later turn into nonedible seed pods. There is another "flower" however which appears near the roots of the plant. These flowers are greenish and have no petals but they produce rounded, fleshy seed pods that contain a single, large, light-brown peanut-like seed. 
These seed were a valuable source of food for the Indians. In the fall hog peanuts can be collected and eaten raw or cooked. Either way they resemble fresh beans. The pods are leathery but crack free during boiling. Seeds can also be dried, roasted and 
eaten like peanuts.

It is pleasing to report that each PCA and Land Bank Association and both banks are in sound financial position and able to serve the sound credit requests coming to them. The future needs of agricultural production are certainly going to call upon us to provide financing for not only traditional but new types of farming operations. 
We face some real challenging opportunities and will do our best to meet the sound financial needs of farmers in the months and years ahead. We are confident that the Farm Credit Banks will be able to sell their bonds to investors at reasonable rates to obtain the increasing volume of credit to finance farmers and their cooperatives. Our encouragement to farmers is to do the best they can and keep their lending institution informed of their problems and plans. Good communications contribute to good relationships.
