Georgia's Title
"Peanut Capital"
Georgia is often cited as the paper capital, the poultry capital and even the pimento capital, but it is for certain that Georgia is the Peanut Capital.
Georgia leads the nation in the production of peanuts and the pea-
nut has reached a new plateau in popularity around the world. For the peanut farmer, the popularity means a new challenge as farmers keep providing a top-quality protein food for world consumption. Last year 19,349 Georgia farms, totaling over 528,000 acres, produced 1,553,509,002 pounds of peanuts ... that's an average of over

Commission for Peanuts, P. 0. Box 967, Tif-

2972 pounds per acre, according to USDA statistics.
Peanuts are averaging 16 to 20 cents per pound resulting in a total crop value of over 322 million dollars, 42 percent of the total U.S. production and any way you spread it ... that's a great influence on the State of Georgia.
Peanuts are grown commercially in 80 of Georgia's 159 counties with the average farmer allotments approximately 27 acres. USDA statistics indicate that over 100,000 persons are directly employed in the production of peanuts plus thousands involved in shelling and processing of peanuts producing over $1.288 bilh'on to the state's economy.
With Georgia peanut farmers growing almost one-third of the 1,610,000 national allotted acres, we're proud that peanuts have been Georgia's leading cash crop for ten years of the last twelve years contributing over 15 percent of the total farm receipts in the state.
The Georgia Peanut Commission was established by a farmer referendum in 1961 to promote and educate people about our quality and nutritious product - peanuts. Americans are now enjoying over 8 pounds of peanuts per person each year and the future looks bright for

Special Edition Georgia Crops Suffering

The Fall Farmland Edition is coming October 26. Deadline for ads received in the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN Office is October 13. See September 14 issue for more information.

From Weather, Insects
The Georgia Crop Reporting Service confirmed in its September report what most Georgia farmers know only too well: "September found Georgia farmers in a worse predicament than had been the case on August 1 and on August 1, that seemed hardly possible."

Stockdogs On The Farm

Raising and using stockdogs to herd hogs, cattle and even horses seems to be on the increase. Years ago stockdogs were used extensively for herding sheep and as a help to the cowboy on a ranch. But as the sheep population declined hi this area, the sight of a dog herding livestock became rare. Today, the users and raisers of stockdogs are becoming frequent due to the dogs' effectiveness as well as the relatively inexpensive cost of buying, training and feeding the small animals. Above, Judo rounds up hogs for his owner, William B. Zorn, who says he will buy another stockdog when he expands his hog operation. Judo is from Sandra Ransom's Rocking R Kennel near Martinez. For further information contact the Mid-South Stockdog Association, 4605 Doss Circle, Powder Springs, Ga. 30073. The FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN will publish notices of stockdogs for sale or wanted hi the Nov. 9 issue. Please include dog's breeding and special training or ability that qualifies as a stockdog. Limit notices to 20 words or less.

Tractor Pullers

Walking Horse Show

Plan Shows
The Georgia Tractor Pullers Association has announced 11 tractor and truck pulls that will be held throughout Georgia during the 1977 pulling season.
According to Danny Fillingame, Executive Director of the GTPA, pulls are being planned across the Georgia area in cooperation with various civic clubs and young farmer clubs. Fillingame further stated that this year's pulls will feature a $1,000 purse for each of the classes being hosted by an organization.
Recently the GTPA elected new officers for the coming year including W. J. Chambliss, President of Tifton; Verlin Jones, First Vice President of Chula; Roy Everett, Second Vice President of Doerun; and Danny Fillingame, Executive Secretary of Sasser. The new

The GWHEA has announced plans for a two day horse show, The Georgia Walking Horse Jamboree, at Stone Mountain Park, October 7 and 8. The show will feature an exhibition of the 1977 World Grand Champion "The Super Stock" winner of the world series of the walking horse world.
Ag Economists Meet
The Agricultural Economics Association of Georgia will hold its annual meeting on October 13 at the Holiday Inn in Athens. Topics of discussion will include research and developments of agricultural economics, status of monetary policies and implications of the National Farm Policy.
For information and reservations write Dr. W. C. McArthur, 301 Conner Hall, University of Georgia, Athens 30602.

Drought, aflatoxin and then insects have plagued Georgia crop and livestock farmers.
The insect problem was led by an army of armyworms in numbers never seen before in Georgia, becoming a statewide problem as they attempted to strip the vegetation from many crop fields and most pasture and hay fields.
CORN Both the corn acreage to be harvested for grain and yield forecasts were lower than in August. Estimates indicate that only
24,200,000 bushels of corn will be harvested in 1977 compared to 133,920,000 bushels in 1976 82 percent less than last year.
SOYBEANS Soybeans were one of the prime targets for armyworms. Some farmers who already had spotty stands decided not to invest in the volume of insecticides needed to control the worms and surrendered their fields to the bugs. Yield
averages on the remaining acres for harvest was forecasted at 15 bushels, off 8.5 bushels from last year.
COTTON The cotton crop is expected to be the smallest crop ever produced since records began in 1866. Some of the cotton was too far gone to recover from the drought when the rains finally came. Added to this problem was a heavy attack on the crop from armyworms and bollworms. Recently bollrot was beginning to show up. In addition, peanuts, pecans, apples and other crops seem to all be suffering in some degree and in certain areas of the state from adverse farming conditions. Although this was to be an "on" year for pecans in their general onoff year cycle, pecan production and size of the nut are down due to the drought.
Yield prospects for peanuts would probably have been better had it not been for the heavy insect infestation.
LIVESTOCK Livestock, poultry and egg producers have not escaped effects of the drought, aflatoxin and insect

Dear Editor I recently ran an ad in the BULLETIN: I can live without cattle I can live without pigs But to save my life I cant live without figs
Well an obliging fellow, F. G. Hull of DaI ton mailed me this clever reply:
I have no cattle or fat squealing pigs But I do have some bushes of Sweet Mission figs And I'll root you a cutting and thus do my part Of easing the pain of your fig loving heart.
I took him up with a versified answer. There's lots of bull in the BULLETIN!
Mrs. C. W. McFarland 611 Colonial Circle Marietta, Georgia 30060 READERS RESPONSE Mr. Geo. W. Bozartt of Mountain View has corrected our usage of the term "boiled peanuts" in last week's article. According to Mr. Bozartt they are correctly called "boiled penders" or peanuts that have been pulled before they are ripe.

Tomatoes do well for Bernard Poston of Forest Park who grew this 3 1/2 pound "Big Boy" in his garden this year.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Georgia's Gold Leaf

Georgia tobacco fields are a common site in south central and southeast Georgia. More than 70,000 acres of cropland is devoted to producing flue-cured tobacco which yields more than one hundred million dollars in agricultural income for Georgia. The 1977 season is estimated to produce 117,250,000 pounds of tobacco.

Tobacco harvesting equipment is replacing hand pickers on most tobacco farms.

After the tobacco is harvested it is brought to the barn for curing.

Flue-cured tobacco is strung for the curing process.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Page 7

In a bulk curing operation such as the one pictured above, the tobacco is strung, placed on racks and the temperature hi the warehouse is raised for the drying process. After a few days of "yellowing the leaf' the tobacco is ready for market but is not pliable and will crumble if touched. To make it smooth and soft, the humidity in the warehouse is increased by spraying a fine mist of water into the curing barn 24 hours before it is to be moved to market.

On the warehouse floor, thousands of pounds of tobacco wait for the tobacco buyers to arrive and the auction to start. Each sheet or bundle contains from 100 to 220 pounds of leaf.

Tobacco inspectors grade each pile of tobacco art,., enier chc-. grade on the basket ticket. When the tobacco buyers plate
their bids and a sale is made, the price is marked on the ticket for payment to the tobacco grower.

To and from the warehouse, urn.,.^ -. hauieo. si:- iarni trucks, and tractor trailers to ships, u^:. or other destinations

Persimmon trees at full size may reach 50 feet but more often are shrub-like and grow in patches or thickets. The bark of old trees is almost black and looks like alligator hide.
The fruit looks something like a plum. When the fruit is hard and green it is quite astringent. In other words, it will turn your mouth inside out. When the fruit turns orange or yellowish-brown it magically turns into a sweet delectable treat. This change takes place after the first cold speli and in many cases after the first good freeze.
There are two persimmons of importance in our country. The first is the American persimmon, Diospyros virginiana which is native from New England to Florida. This variety produces fruit from a half to two inches in diameter. It has yellow orange fruit with large seeds embedded in the flesh.
The other persimmon is an import from China and Korea. The Oriental or Japanese persimmon, D. Kaki, was introduced in America in the mid 19th century and is grown commercially in Florida and California.
The easiest way to enjoy persimmons is to eat them fresh. To enjoy the pulp in jams, jellies, pies, etc. put a handful of washed persimmons in a colander or food mill and push the pump through. This eliminates the seeds and most of the skin. Persimmon pulp freezes well and can be saved for as much as a year when frozen.
One of the little known treats of persimmons is the hidden surprise inside the seeds. Each seed contains a leaf embryo in the shape of a tiny knife, fork or spoon. Every child who has enjoyed a persimmon will long remember the joy of finding a complete table service suitable for an elf.
The seeds have also economically - een substituted for coffee beans by the early settler&. The leaves, either green or dried, contain an exceptionally high content of vitamin C and make a fair tasting tea as well.
Wasted Water
One leaky faucet can waste up to 2,200 gallons of water in a year. That amounts to 35,200 eight-ounce glasses.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Pregnant sows are walking a 15 minute treadmill every day hi a test to determine if exercise is essential to their good health and productivity.
Traditionally, sows have been confined during pregnancy with little or no exercise allowed. Dr. Otho Hale, Professor of Annual Science believes the prescription "eat right, get plenty of rest and exercise" applies to animals as well as humans and is putting his theory to the test. The sows will be
watched through gestation and into the forwarding barn to determine the number of live pigs, condition ofthe sow and the way she milks to determine
if exercise is necessary for these pregnant animals.

Short Course Scheduled
For Grounds Maintenance
The annual Commercial Grounds Maintenance Short Course will be held at the GAE Building on Snapfinger Road, Atlanta on October 25 and 26. The meeting is located near the intersection of 1-20 and 1-285.
The meeting is designed to keep individuals who are involved in commercial grounds maintenance abreast of information relating to the culture of ornamental plants, shade trees and turf grasses in public areas.
For further details on the program, contact your County Extension Agent.

conditions. Pastures are so severely damaged in many areas that farmers are having to sell cattle they cannot feed.
Egg production has been the victim of unusual weather this year. Early in the year, cold weather caused a dip in output, then the unusually, hot weather not only caused increased mortality but also resulted in reduced output per hen. Adverse weather also effected the increase in meat output in broilers.

the use of this 26 percent protein food in a protein hungry world.
With peanut harvest now underway, farmers will have a tough year economically. This year's crop faced the toughest drought since 1954 and insects and diseases have cut into the farmer's income. However, we anticipate a harvest of 600.000 tons, approximately 18 percent short of last year's production.
The future looks bright for peanuts. A new export promotion program now being coordinated by the National Peanut Council's Export Committee promises new markets in the Middle East, Europe, West Germany and Japan. A new peanut program in 1978 will allow the peanut farmer to produce more for foreign markets and we're certain we can meet that challenge.
Peanuts are as American as apple pie and you can bet that Georgia will long be remembered as the Peanut Capital of the World.
