FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 63 Ptueii Better Tools For Farming At the turn of the century, the Farm Equipment Dealers Association was born, with an interest in developing agriculture through better tools and better service for farmers. Through the years, the farm equipment dealer has been the far- jmers' constant I companion and best friend. When the farmer prospers, the dealer I prospers and as [new machines, new methods and new ways of [making a profit ___(were developed manufacturers, they were passed on to farmers through a nationwide network of dealers. If a machine will not do the job, or if a dealer will not give adequate (Our guest columnist this week is Joe F. Pruett, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia Farm Equipment Association, 2966 Riverside Drive, Macon, 31204.)______ service, neither will be around for long. Our national organization has been equally successful in all other states. Farm machinery prices, like everything else have been on a continuous spiral upwards. The best solution is to learn to farm more efficiently. Tell your local dealer your suggestions for a more efficient machine. He will tell his manufacturer what to build and the cycle will be completed. Farmers can also help by ordering machines and repair in advance of the peak seasons. Protect your machines from the elements and avoid unnecessary repairs due to rust and corrosion. Cyrus McCormick gave the world it's first great farm laborsaver when he invented the reaper in 1831. John Deere made an equally important contribution in 1837 when he invented the first steel plow. Today's $50,000 monster tractors are" a far cry from such a beginning. We are proud to have been a part of such growth and we salute the ingenuity patience, fortitude and confidence of the American farmer, who has shared with us the greatest fifty years of development in the history of man. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this 'publication. <* All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days. County Numerous, Diverse Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River encompassing 37,429,120 acres or 58,483 square miles. Within our boundries are 159 dif- ferent counties, some large, some small - each with an interesting history and valuable contribution to Georgia agriculture. Appling County Appling County has 781 farms witff 167,742 acres according to the 1974 Census of Agriculture. Farm land and buildings were valued at $80,177,000. Total County acreage is 328,064 acres. Destructive Lightning Lightning is serious business in Georgia. Our state ranks fourth nationally in the number of thunderstorms annually and summer is the prime target for most of these lightning-packed storms. During a storm, stay indoors if at all possible. Keep away from open doors, windows, fireplaces, radiators, stoves, metal pipes, sinks and electrical appliances and equipment. Stay off the telephone because lightning may strike a telephone line. If you are outside and there's no shelter available, avoid high places. Don't go near isolated trees. A good rule is to crouch in the open, keeping twice as, far away from isolated trees as the trees are high. If you are in a car stay there. An automobile offers excellent lightning protection. Swimming, golfing, fishing, boating and taking laundry off the clothsline are all definitely out during a thunderstorm. Appling is on the extreme southern border of the Middle Coastal Plain area of the state and the soils are principally loamy sands and sands. These soils are adapted to ^production of corn, cotton, tobacco, peanuts, vegetables and pecans. Appling County was created by Legislative Act of December 15,1818 out of treaty lands negotiated from (One in a series featuring Georgia's 159 counties.) the Creek Indians. It was the 40th county in Georgia in order of organization and was named in honor of Colonel Daniel Appling. When first organized, Appling included Clinch, Jeff Davis, Pierce and Ware counties and parts of CharIton, Echols and Wayne. Holmesville was the original county seat but later the courthouse was moved to the present county seat of Baxley. Appling County produced $22,980,000 in farm products in 1974 with poultry, livestock, corn, soybeans, tobacco and peanuts leading the county in agricultural revenue. Smart, Fun and Rewarding (Continued From Page 12) to-form L. (but S.) gardener does not become restless and excited, since he does not bother with a spring garden. Why expend all that energy on plants that produce but one crop? Furthermore, what do people do with all those heads of cabbage? Who can possibly consider a radish interesting? As for onions, there isn't a gardener in suburbia who could ever compete with the worldrenowned Vidalia folks. So save all your strength for one big gorgeous summer garden. Don't even look at a seed catalogue or display till March 15. On that day, decide what vegetables you want to grow and divide them into three categories: those easy to grow from seed outside, those smart to start indoors, or those best to buy as seedlings from the garden center. Those easy to grow from seed in the garden include beans, corn, beets. Ones to start indoors March 15 are okra, cukes, and mini-cukes, minicantaloupe, all kinds of squash (including acorn), and eggplant. It is best to buy pepper and tomato plants from the nursery. So buy the seeds for the first two groups, and get the second group started indoors. Fill good sized cans (coffee, lard cans) or pots with garden soil, about four containers per vegetable; plant the seeds, and set the lot on a cart by a sunny window. When the plants are well up, wheel them outdoors on nice days to get them acquainted with their future environment. On April 25, make a complete list of all your garden needs for the season. Telephone the garden center and place your order (if you haven't been to the nursery even once, you might like to do this personally.) Your list will include: several bales of pine straw; bags of cow manure; fertilizer and"lime as recommended by the soil test; a good fungicide and insecticide; some sort of a sprayer for these; wooden stakes for tomatoes; bamboo stakes for beans; any kind of stake and chicken wire to make trellises for cucumbers and cantaloupe to climb. Also order a spade, rake (but no hoe), an inexpensive wheelbarrow, and your tomato and pepper plants. Be sure to buy just a few vigorous individual pots of peppers and tomatoes. They should be certified and of suitable varieties. Think of it! The garden center will certainly deliver this exhaustive and extensive order free. Never again will you have to pick pine straw, one straw at a time, out of the trunk of your car, three times. The delivery man will surely tote the heavy bales and bags right out to your garden. You will rejoice too in the saving of gas and wear and tear on your late model car. On May 1, plow your garden again. Broadcast the fertilizer and lime in the amount recommended; fetch, in your shiny new wheelbarrow, the rich and ready grass mulch, and distribute it and the cow manure over the surface of the garden. Plow thoroughly one more time, going this way and that to mix all the added nutrients into the soil. Then set up the trellises for the cukes, cantaloupe, and beans along three sides of the garden. On the fourth side, drive the tomato stakes into the ground. Next, haul out all those bags of newspapers and spread them, about ten overlapping layers thick, covering the entire garden area. Passing neighbors might stare in awe, wondering if you are trying for some reason to dry old papers or perhaps are searching madly for a crossword puzzle from months gone by that you have just now solved. Pay no heed; enjoy last October's Sales and Clearances and your favorite funnies as you work. On top of the paper (and grocery bags too surely you wouldn't waste them) goes the pine straw, just enough to cover it well. You might want to outline the garden with some kind of boards or bricks, which makes the area look neat as well as providing a solid path for one wheel of the lawnmower when you have to cut the grass. May 2 is G-Day! Instant Garden Day! Bring out all your pots and cans of seedlings and plant them by pulling back the paper and straw just enough to set the plants in the soil. Then replace the paper and straw, right up to the base of the plants. In the same way, dig little furrows for the vegetable seeds in Category One and plant them. Add 1/2 cup extra lime to each hole for the tomatoes. Now water your garden and stand back. You will never have to weed or hoe, as the paper/straw mulch prevents weeds from growing, while at the same time conserving moisture, keeping garden diseases under control, and providing a nice dry bed for the vegetables to lie on as they mature. You should begin a program of spraying with the fungicide/insecticide almost right away, doing so in late afternoon to avoid annoying the friendly bees. When it is necessary to water, do it by hand without a nozzle on the hose, watering each area separately, and do it before late afternoon. This might seem a little strenuous for the lazy part of you, but it will save untold gallons of water and help ward off certain garden diseases by not allowing the plant foliage to get and stay wet overnight. Smart. If squirrels, chipmunks or rabbits ever become a problem, pay a visit to your local humane society and spring a sixteen pound Morris-type cat. He will know what is expected of him. Summertime, and the livin' is easy. Rosalind Anderson Extension Volunteer PESTICIDE SAFETY The first step in using any chemical pesticide safely is to read, understand and precisely follow label directions, says Cecil Ham- mond of the Georgia Extension Service. *** DRY MILK CARE Instant nonfat dry milk needs no refrigeration as long as it's in the powder form. But once it is reconstituted, it should be given the same care as fluid milk, according to Extension Service home economists. Wednesday, August 10, 1977 Lawns Valuable A recent survey of real estate brokers across the nation indicates that the lawn around a house has a measurable cost value and it may be a lot higher than most people think. Comments expressed in the survey were interesting. "When a lawn is taken care of, the house is taken care of, too." "A woman looks at a house from outside. If it looks good, she'll go in, if not, chances are she won't look at it." "If we have two houses of equal price the one with the good lawn will go faster." The cash-value of a weed-free lawn varied all the way from nothing to $10,000 with an average value of THE MARKET BULLETIN Page 7 Drowning Kills 2,400 Children Each Year More than 2,400 children under age 14 die from drowning each year in the United States. Cecil Hammond, safety expert with the Cooperative Extension Service, says young children should be taught to swim, but they should never swim or play in the water without adult supervision. Regardless of age, swimmers should be aware of the hazards of unfamiliar water. They should also use "the buddy system" and never swim alone. $1,322. A good lawn has a cash value far in excess of the relatively small cost involved in its upkeep. Something Growing In Your Closet Muggy summer weather is the perfect time for spotting mildew growing in your closet, basement, under beds and on carpeting. Mildew -- a simple plant called a fungus -- grows wherever it is damp, warm, poorly aired and lighted. It not only is ugle but it leaves a musty odor, discolors and rots fabrics, wood, leather and paper. Prevention is the best mildew policy. If things are kept clean and dry and ventilation is good, chances of having mildew are greatly lessened. If you have already discovered mildew on clothing or household fabrics, there are several methods of treating these items. The key is to remember that all mildew spores must be removed before the fungus can be eliminated. Brush off surface growth out of doors to prevent scattering spores in the house. Sun and air the items thoroughly. White articles can be treated with a mixture of lemon juice and salt. Spread in the sun to bleach. Rinse thoroughly and dry. A solution of one tablespoon perborate bleach to a pint of water can be used to sponge or soak an affected article. After thirty minutes, rinse well.
