Knapp, our founding father: "Your Mission is to increase the measure of happiness, and to universal love of country, add the universal knowledge of comfort and to harness the forces of all learning to be useful and needful in human society". Maybe we ought to say simply "Creating a better way of life for human beings". The more than 200 women employed by the Cooperative Extension Service in Georgia have a unique opportunity. It is our privilege to work with homemakers and youth throughout the state to have a better way of life. As Home Economists, we are able to help because we are trained for the job, backed by research information and a staff of the best specialists available anywhere. We receive training on a regular basis to stay abreast of latest research findings in the home economics field. The rising cost of living has increased economic pressures on families. This has brought about (Our guest columnist this week is Mrs. Patricia N. Barkuloo, President, Georgia Assn. of Extension Home Economists, P. 0. Box 327, Tifton, Ga. 31794.)________ many problems. Your local Extension home economist can help with these problems. She provides information in many ways publications, news articles, newsletters, T.V., radio, special interest classes, workshops, private consultations, and phone calls. She is a busy person, but never to busy to help someone with a problem. Call her when you need help. The Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists is a professional organization for the County Extension Home Economist. GAEHE provides an opportunity for improving professional standards, fellowship among members, a means of idea exchange, and recognition of leadership. It also offers an opportunity to provide scholarships and awards for outstanding service. There is a good chance that although there will be only nine sets of buyers in Georgia by the week of August 8, we may receive an accelerated sales rate. In the meantime, during the first (Continued On Page 12) The 27th Annual Georgia Mountain Fair will be held August 5 through 13 in Hiawassee. Hybrid bermudagrasses can utilize 60 to 80 pounds of Nitrogen to six to eight weeks. Common bermuda, Bahia and Fescue can utilize 30 to 50 pounds of Nitrogen in the same time period. An in- creased sampling program by PDA has therefore been initiated which could result in additional restric- tions of the use of sulfa drugs in swine. The Georgia Department of Agriculture recommends the following to swine producers: Follow precisely label instructions for with- drawal time of sulfa drugs and all other feed additives. Clean mixing equipment, feeders, and feed storage bins prior to ad- ding non-medicated feed. Take care not to allow feed mix- ups or animal mix-ups which allow animals to consume medicated feed right up to marketing. Make sure no swine are marketed without proper withdrawal time for all additives. The skyline at the Georgia Ports Authority's Garden City Terminal has undergone a radical change, with the addition of the Multi-Product Dry Bulk handling facility. The $4.3 million dollar project is part of the G.P.A.'s current $52 million dollar expansion program. Horses, mules, ponies for sale People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. Hie MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication. AH horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days. On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April. Packaging Costs Foods packed as individual servings are usually not good buys, say Extension Service home economists, because the extra packaging in most cases boosts the price. GEORGIA FORESTS More than two of every three acres of land in Georgia are growing trees. Nelson Brightwell, head of the Extension forest resources department, says virtually all of the state's forest land is classed as commercial capable of growing trees of commercial quality, and available for commercial use. All 159 counties have some forest land, ranging from 96 per cent of the area in Clinch County to 39 per cent in Dooly County. Wednesday, July 27, 1977 THE MARKET BULLETIN Page 11 GDA'S Dairy Division Dependable Cow - Serve You Fresh Milk The Georgia Department of Agriculture Dairy Division inspects Grade A dairy farms and dairy plants to insure the highest quality milk product for Georgia consumers. Georgia has 960 certified dairy farms and 29 Grade A milk plants and boasts one of the highest U. S. Public Health ratings in the nation. Cows are milked twice a day by milking machines. Each cow is thoroughly cleaned before and after milking to meet high sanitation standards and requirements. Milk tanks at the farm store produces low temperatures until it is picked up for transportation to the dairy plant. Refrigerated stainless steel tank trucks pick up milk every day or every other day. Milk tank truck drivers are licensed and bonded by the Department of Agriculture. Samples of raw and processed milk are tested in Department or independent certified dairy labs for fat content and to assure the milk is free of harmful bacteria. After processing, milk is packaged for delivery to ' store and consumer. Throughout the entire processing and packaging procedure, the milk is carefully monitored to protect quality and guarantee high sanitary standards. In the food store, Department Sanitarian Barbara Wenzel checks for proper cooling in dairy counters, cleanliness and milk dates. From cow to consumer, the GDA is there to assure the best possible dairy product for you. Page 12 Black or white pepper comes from the Piper nigrum plant, a perennial climbing shrub native to the forests of southwestern India. It is the world's most popular spice. (Salt is not a spice but a mineral.) Both black and white pepper come from the dried berry of the same vine. The vine looks something like wild ivy and can grow up to twenty feet. Pepper has played a unique part in the history of this world. For many many years it was as rare as gold. It was traded between India and Europe and was often taken as part of the "booty" in pirate raids. In the Middle Ages, pepper was the most prized of all spices. It was so precious it was used as money. People were paid in pepper, bought goods with pepper and included pepper as part of their dowry. It was the constant search for more reasonable sources of pepper that caused the Portugese explorers to discover the all sea-route around the Cape of Good Hope to the Indies. Pepper is grown now in most warm weather countries in the world. It is not a rare and precious commodity any more but its value as a food seasoning has not decreased one little bit. Valera Jessee Grain Terminal (Continued From Page 1) accuracy of one 20th of one percent and will be judged in accordance with all USDA grading and weighing requirements. Inside facilities in head house structure, will be cleaners (to clean various crops and take out foreign material), graders to size corn, soybeans, and wheat. For those commodities that come in with excessive moisture, there is going to be a 2,000 bushel per hour drier. Storage bins for protective devices have automatic monitoring devices to evaluate moisture content and temperature. Capability is there to blend commodities to any variety the purchaser desires. During Georgia's off season, brokers from other states including midwest will bring in their grain. THE MARKET BULLETIN Georgia Abounds In Creepy, Crawly Spiders Spiders vary considerably in size, shape and color but can be readily recognized by the presence of eight legs and two distinct body regions. Most spiders are harmless to man. Some are even beneficial because they feed on various types of insects, mites and other small animals. Although all spiders possess venomous glands, most spiders can not pierce the skin of man and even those that can usually produce no reaction at all or at most a slight pain or swelling. There are, however, a few that do have the ability to pierce the skin and inject poison into human victims. Georgia's two most common poisonous spiders are the black widow and the brown recluse, sometimes called the fiddleback. Black widow spiders are characterized by their glossy black cramps, convulsions, nausea and shock often result. The brown recluse is slightly smaller than the black widow. Its color and the presence of a red hourglass marking. A red spot at the end of the abdomen is also charac- teristic . The venom of the _ black widow is very potent and its toxicity has been compared to that of a rattlesnake. Children and elderly people are generally more susceptible to the venom. Abdominal Tobacco Buyers (Continued From Page 1) five days of Georgia tobacco sales this year, we sold 17,638,974 pounds for a total of $14,814,461 or an average of $83.99 per 100 Ibs. During the first five days of the 1976 season, we sold 33,402,196 pounds for $31,611,838, averaging $94.64 per 100 pounds. During the first five days of this marketing season, flue cured stabilization receipts totaled 17.8 percent, while during the first five days last year, stabilization receipts accounted for 33.9 percent. Home Economists (Continued From Page 1) working together to improve their professional role and to do a better job. A special project of GAEHE this year was presenting an educational program for the women attending the Georgia Association of County Commissioners. This included two demonstrations "Focus on Fashion" and "Entertaining at Home" as well as an exhibit room on "Dollar Saving Decorating Ideas". Since 4-H Club work is a major responsibility of many Home Economists, the Association spon- sors a number of activities for 4- H'ers. color varies from light to chocolate brown and its body is evenly covered with short hairs. There is also a dark, violin-shaped marking giving way to the nickname "fiddleback". The bite of the recluse is usually localized but intense pain and swelling usually affect the area bitten. Scar tissue up to the size of a half dollar is not uncommon. Spider bite victims should consult a physician or hospital immediately for treatment. Make no attempt to cut the skin as this often results in infection. Encephalomyelitis Diagonosed In Ga. The first positive diagnosis of Eastern encephalomyelitis was made last week in the Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic Lab from tissue submitted from a horse from Columbus, Georgia. The Georgia Department of Agriculture recommends that horse owners contact their veterinarians and arrange for immunization of their animals. Late summer and early fall is the season this disease has been endemic in Georgia in past years. Pat Whelchel, Union City, displays the 18 1/2 pound, 26 inch long banana squash he grew in his "dry weather garden". He claims to have used no special fertilizer to produce the giant squash. Forage Crop (Continued From Page 1) and sorghum crosses to produce a crop. Where cattle feed is extremely short it may be practical to plant some winter grazing two to three weeks earlier than usual. Drought stressed crops and crop residues may be stored and substituted for hay. Many producers are baling or stacking stressed corn plants. Coarse materials such as corn should be stored under some type of roof to avoid excessive decay when rain comes. Stored forages should be analyzed for their feed value for efficient feeding and drought stressed crops should be treated for Nitrates before feeding to cattle. Early fall fertilization of Fescue can increase fall and winter feed production. Fescue can utilize 40 to 60 pounds of Nitrogen during the fall. Well managed Fescue will continue to grow until daytime temperatures drop below 45 degrees fahrenheit. All alternative sources of feed should be considered. The price of hay or other roughage and/or the feed value may be quite variable. Careful planning is needed to provide adequate feed for cattle at the lowest cost and to make the best use of available forages. Producer should keep in mind that a well fertilized plant is more efficient in the use of water than a poor fertilized plant. W. H. Sell Extension Agronomist
