FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 63 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, June 29, 1977 Number 26 TPHJHUJ All Of Georgia Needs Disaster Aid There is hardly a farmer in Georgia that has not been affected this year by adverse weather conditions especially the drought. Crops, cattle, all livestock are suffering heavy losses or severe damage. I was pleased last week to be notified that the Secretary of Agricul- ture had acted judiciously and promptly to declare 130 of Georgia's counties as disaster areas. Governor George Busbee had made the request so that these farmers would be eligible for various federally funded relief programs. However, I feel very strongly that the entire state of Georgia should now be declared a disaster area so that these same low interest loans would be made available to the deserving farmers in the remaining 29 counties. I have traveled in several of these areas and talked to numerous farmers. There are many in the remaining 29 counties that have been as hard hit as their neighbors in the 130 declared counties. They should not be denied the same opportunities for loans to restock, replant and repay as their neighbors in the other declared counties. If the entire state were declared a disaster area, it does not mean that any undeserving individuals would be given assistance through the disaster relief programs as the Farmers Home Administration judges each case individually according to that particular farmer's losses and credit availability. I have written Governor Busbee complimenting him on his previous action and urging him to make a subsequent request immediately to have the entire state of Georgia declared a disaster area. Hopefully, this action will come soon so that all Georgians who have been hurt badly by the weather conditions will be able to secure some relief from federal programs. In last week's BULLETIN (see page 1, June 22 "Drought Relief Programs") we listed several of the relief programs available to farmers through the ASCS and FmHA. As (Continued On Page 12) Georgia Tobacco Markets To Open Sales July 13 Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has set Wednesday, July 13 as opening date for Georgia tobacco markets. The National Tobacco Advisory Committee concurred, making a similar recommendation to Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland. Round Table Members Serve Poultry Industry Mark your calendar. Watermelon Day at the Atlanta State Farmers Market is July 10. Kids from one to one hundred will enjoy the sweet goodness of Georgia melons just like Jason Hill of Covington. SOLAR ENERGY STUDIED AT UGA Scientists at the University of Georgia Agricultural Engineering Department, under a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Department of Agriculture will develop a solar energy system, which will conserve petroleum, for use in curing tobacco. This research is part of the continuing effort to develop economical ways of using solar energy that will result in major savings in petroleum. The Poultry Leaders Round Table membership embraces those industry leaders who have rendered outstanding service to their fellow man, both within and far beyond the bounds of the Poultry Federation and industry. They provide the leadership and much of the "legwork" necessary to the support, functioning and continued success of the Federation, other poultry associations, and the overall industry; getting the job done on today's projects and activities, and setting the course and laying the foundation for tomorrow. In extending their abilities and energies above and beyond selfinterest and ease, they also provide leadership and service to countless worthwhile causes; such as local, state and national government, churches, civic and charitable (Continued On Page 12) July Gardening Chores: Includes F/owers, Lawn, Trees Just because the lazy days of summer are here, gardening maintenance must continue. However, these garden chores will pay off handsomely if they are done correctly and done now. Early July is the last chance to prune azaleas before late next spring. Late July and August is when the azaleas will be setting bloom buds for next year. Don't let azaleas dry out! They have a shallow root system which dries out rapidly. A 23 inch pine straw mulch will aid in this department. Fertilizing July is the time for the last summer fertilization of your landscape plants. Use about 1 tablespoon of a general fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) per foot of plant height. Spread the fertilizer evenly around the plant, from the drip-line into about 1 inch from the stem. Now is the time to enjoy the beautiful blooms. But beware there are a couple of pests to look for on your Crape-myrtles. A white powder-like substance on the leaves indicates an invasion of Powdery Mildew. This is a common disease problem of Crape-myrtles. The fungicide Karathane is effective against this problem. Aphids can also be a problem at this time of year. These are small insects that usually attack the young tender growth, sucking vital plant juices from the plant. Roses Be patient and persistent with your spray program. For best results, roses should be sprayed weekly with a good fungicide. Every other week, a good insecticide should be added to the spray. It's not enough just to spray but be (Continued On Page 12) July 13 was the opening date recommended to Commissioner Irvin by the Georgia Tobacco Advisory Committee following a meeting in Macon today. In announcing the opening date, Irvin said he was aware of the fact the crop in Georgia is not quite as mature as it was this time last year and some farmers may not be prepared for an early opening, but an early opening is necessary to prevent a backlog of tobacco when more leaf starts coming to market two to three weeks from now. Even though Friday is not generally a sale day, Irvin said he will request Secretary of Agriculture Bergland to supply graders and buying companies to supply buyers for the full three days of the opening week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in order to give growers that much additional time to dispose of early cured leaf. The Commissioner said that in general the crop is good and although the drought hurt in ^ome areas, the -extra weight of dry weather tobacco will make up for much drought damage in the market as a whole. He explained that tobacco produced with too much moisture weighs less after curing. Last year Georgia produced 122,134,568 pounds of tobacco valued at $134,789,770.77. Members of the State Tobacco Advisory Board include Commissioner Irvin as chairman; Frank Pidcock, President of the Georgia Tobacco Warehousemen's Assn.; Emmett Reynolds, President of the Georgia Farm Bureau; State Representatives Marcus Collins of Cotton, Dewey Rush of Glennville and Dorsey Matthews of Moultrie; State Senators Joe Kennedy of Claxton and Loyce Turner of Valdosta; and tobacco growers Inman Miller of Statesboro, Manning Mimbs of Soperton, Joe Hayes of Waycross and Eugene Hudson of Ocilla. LONGER LIFE Have you noticed that some dairy items half and half and cream products now have a longer shelf life? A new process called "Ultrapasteurization" is responsible. Diet Depending on her care and inherited ability; the cow will produce anywhere from 8,000 to 30,000 pounds of milk a year. This is approximately 3,700 to 13,950 quarts. One quart of milk weighs 2.15 pounds. *** Dairy product consumers can always be sure about the purity and nutrition value of their products. A recent USDA study revealed that milk plants are inspected about 24 times a year, although the Public Health Service recommends only twice a year check ups in its model sanitary code. *** Just how big is dairying in America? Every day, milk is produced by 11 million dairy cows on some 300,000 U.S. farms. Every other day it is picked up by a fleet of about 20,000 trucks and moved to one of 1,600 fluid bottling plants or 3,000 dairy product manufacturing plants. Another 20,000 trucks are involved in milk and milk product distribution. Ultimately, some 50,000 retail outlets of all kinds dispense dairy products to consumers. *** Although milk is processed it's not an engineered or fabricated food. It naturally has two major components; fat, including fat soluble vitamins, and solids-not-fat, which includes proteins, carbohydrate, water-soluble vitamins and minerals. These nutrients in milk make it a food not duplicated by modern science. *** Milk production in 1976 posted the sharpest year-toyear gain since 1953 over 120 billion pounds. The increase was a result of substantial increase in output per cow coupled with relatively small decline in cow numbers. *** Use of channel 8 on the citizen band radios may soon be informally recognized as the farmer's channel. The Rural Traffic Committee of the National Institute for Farm Safety is promoting the idea. 2O Word Limit To Be Enforced Use the following form to submit your ad. By cultivation and use it is a vegetable; botanically it is a fruit. Among fruits, it is a berry, being pulpy and containing one or more seeds that are not stones. Tomatoes belong to the nightshade family (Solanaceae) along with potatoes, tobacco, petunias, peppers, eggplants and jimson weed. It is a herbaceous perennial but in most climates, including Georgia, it is grown as an annual. Tomatoes are thought to be native to the Peru-Bolivia-Ecuador area of the Andes Mountains of South America. Long before America was discovered tomatoes were being cultivated and were carried into North America by migrating Indians. In 1554, tomatoes were referred to as "Apples of Gold." In England they were called love apples to be cultivated only for ornament and curiosity. It is fact that tomatoes were used as tokens of affection. Sir Walter Raleigh is said to have presented a tomato to Queen Elizabeth as a symbol of his undying love for the Monarch. He was thereafter beheaded but not because of the tomato. Thomas Jefferson raised tomatoes in Virginia in 1781 -but tomatoes were not sold on the market until 1829. Tomatoes were looked upon as a novelty-some even thought they were poison. Tomato popularity started in New Orleans. By 1860, people throughout the United States were cultivating and enjoying this fruit of the vine. As children grow, their nutrient requirements increase. Very young children have relatively low total needs. From ages one to three, requirements are about half those of adults for protein, calories, many minerals and vitamins A, B and E; vitamin C and calcium needs are about the same as adults. Parents should know that the iron required (15 mg.) by a child under four is one and a half times the need of an adult man. From four to ten, iron needs drop to 10 mg. per day. All children and teens must have vitamin D; fortified milk provides enough. When the teen years arrive, vitamin, mineral and protein needs have reached the adult level. However, calcium needs are one and a half times as much and 18 mg. per day of iron is needed by all teens and women until age fifty. Contrary to popular opinion, teen boys and athletes do not need extra protein. Calorie needs are higher, though. Add extra bread and cereal rather than sweets. Children are often hungry bet- ween meals. Give them nutritious snacks such as milk, fruit, vegetables, juices, dried fruits, cheese, peanut butter on bread, oatmeal or molasses cookies or nonsugared cereal with milk. An oc- casional non-nutritious snack will do no harm after needed nutrients are eaten. Children, teen boys, and active teen girls have some calories to spare; inactive adults have very few. Breakfast is often a neglected meal. Without it, children will have gone without food for too long and become inactive, cranky and less able to learn. Breakfast should include some protein, such as a glass of milk, an egg, meat or cereal with milk. Breakfast is a good time to take your vitamin C in the form of citrus juices. Setting a good example is the best way to teach your children good eating habits. If Dad refuses to eat green vegetables and Mom turns her nose up at liver, chances are the children will do likewise. Nutritious foods are essential regardless of age. Good eating habits learned as a child can make you a healthy, energetic adult. See page 7 for Nutrition Chart. Annuals Fertilize your annual beds, using about 1 teaspoon of general fertilizer per square foot. Annuals should be fertilized monthly during the growing season. Do not cultivate in annual beds because root damage can occur. Pull weeds by hand. Lawns Don't mow your lawn as close during dry weather. By letting your grass remain a little taller, you will enable it to tolerate more dry weather. As more moisture becomes available, gradually bring its height back to where it was originally. Never cut more than 1/3 of the leaf surface area at any one time. Magnolias Don't panic if you see a few leaves falling from your Southern Magnolia. This is probably normal leaf drop. Crabapples Many crabapples have almost defoliated this spring in Atlanta. Maybe one of your trees is dropping a lot of leaves. If you will look closely at these trees, you will see black spots on the leaves. The problem is a disease called Scab. It generally just causes leaf drop and doesn't kill the trees. Captan is a good fungicide to use against this problem. Dr. Harry Ponder, Extension Horticulturist.
