FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 63 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, June 22, 1977 Number 25 Agriculture's New Generation A few local chapters of Future Farmers of America were organized in Georgia in 1928. The movement spread rapidly over the state. During the summer of 1929, the first State Convention was perfected. Billy Bowdoin of Statham was the first president of the state organization. Georgia received her charter from the national organization in 1929. There is an FFA organization in every community in Georgia where vocational agriculture is taught. Today the Georgia Association of Future Farmers of America has evolved into an organization of nearly 18,000 young people preparing themselves to meet the challenge of leadin American agriculture and helping feed the world. FFA members each select a career study field for themselves early in their membership. Many of these programs are available without a disaster declaration, while others require that the Governor ask the Secretary of Agriculture to declare a disaster. The Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service offers an emergency livestock feed program, a disaster payment program, an agriculture conservation program and emergency conservation measures. For more information on these, farmers should contact their county ASCS committee chairman. The Farmers Home Administration offers several financial assistance programs including disaster emergency loans and emergency livestock loan guarantees. To qualify for such loans, farmers must be in an area designated as a disaster area. For more information, farmers should contact their local FmHA office. There are other programs available through the Forest Service and the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. Basically, farmers should contact the appropriate agency to determine whether or not they qualify for aid or assistance in a given situation. Georgia Farmers Hard Hit By Million Dollar Drought Drought conditions have cost Georgia farmers an estimated $250 million and several thousand farmers have indicated they will need federal disaster aid according to Dept. of Agriculture reports received as of June 13. Commissioner of Agriculture Be wore of Miracle Tommy Irvin said drought damage to corn is assessed at $94 million, Plant Stimulants tobacco $8 1/2 million, peanuts $21 million, cotton $8 million, pastures and hay some $55 million. The next horse show edition will not be published until October. Peach Pickin 1 and Pockin 1 in Georgia Georgia peaches are at their peak. Growers throughout the state are busy picking, packing and shipping the succulent fruit from Georgia to Canada with all stops inbetween. At the Otis Gunn orchard and peach packing house in Centerville workers are carefully choosing the ripe peaches, hand picking and hauling them to the packing house where they are washed, brushed, sized, graded and packed for shipping. This year's crop is estimated at about 140 million pounds with a value of approximately 25 million dollars for the state's agricultural economy. Horses, mules, ponies for sale eople who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication. All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days. On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only January through April. Pages The word cantaloupe comes from the Italian "cantaluppi", the name of a former summer residence of the popes near Rome, where a melon introduced from Armenia was cultivated. Cantaloupes are actually a variety of muskmelons which are native to the Near East. Columbus made note that on one of his early voyages to this country there was a small melon being cultivated by the Indians. Nothing morels known concerning the type of melons grown but they apparently gave rise to desirable sorts. Before 1870, production of cantaloupes on a large scale was unknown. After their introduction, however, they were in large demand and growers throughout the nation sought to meet the needs of this new market. Georgia soon became one of the leading producers of the melon because our weather conditions provided the warm climate and soil moisture required. In 1976, Georgia was the fourth largest producer of cantaloupes. 69 percent of the cantaloupe crop goes to market June, July and August. A perfect melon will feel springy with slight pressure and have an inviting aroma. Cantaloupes go with any meal. They are delicious, nutritious (containing a large quantity of vitamins A and C) and contain only 37 calories to half of a medium melon. Valera Jessee Healthy Rose Foliage Necessary For Bloom The number of rose flowers your bushes produce is in direct proportion to the number of leaves present. Healthy, vigorous plants have a large total leaf area. Any leaf reduction will drastically reduce the size and number of future flowers. In order to stimulate new growth, fertilize roses lightly once a month, and water at least once a week when the soil becomes dry. Black spot, a fungus disease that attacks rose foliage, is a cause of leaf drop throughout the growing season. A preventative spray schedule with a fungicide once a week is recommended. Agriculture's New Generation (Continued From Page 1) tificial inseminator, ag credit representative, grain elevator operator, wildlife conservationist, veterinarian, ag engineer, nurseryman, vo-ag teacher, meat cutter, mechanic, groundskeeper, soil scientist, farm manager, and feed salesman. Here in our own state, agribusiness is Georgia's largest industry. It embraces three major sectors: (1) farming, (2j farm service and supply of agricultural production inputs, and (3) processing, distribution, and merchandizing of agricultural products. Agribusiness includes approximately 75,000 farms as well as thousands of commercial businesss establishments. It accounts for three-fourths of the State's natural resources, two-fifths of the value added in manufacturing and one-third of the wholesale and retail trade. FFA members in Georgia are given chances to excel in any phase of agriculture in which they are interested through the numerous contests and award programs in the FFA. Each year the state organization gives thousands of dollars in prize money to deserving FFA'ers who have excelled in anything from livestock production to horticulture and from public speaking to electrification. Our National FFA Theme for this year is "FFA-AGRICULTURE'S NEW GENERATION", and this new generation is certainly ready to go into the world and meet whatever challenges that may arise in the field of agriculture.
