Fire Ant Bait 
To Be Phased Out 
Last week Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Russell Train approved a Mississippi proposal to phase out production of Mirex fire ant bait over the next 2 years. 
I am extremely disappointed about this decision as more than 
ever before Georgians in infested areas are demanding relief from this pest. 
Last year alone Georgia farmers and land owners lost over twenty three million dollars because of fire ant infestation. In the Sept. 22 issue of the MARKET BULLETIN, I told of my efforts to have the production of Mirex continued until a substitute or alternate material could be found to control the fire ant. Unless there is a major scientific breakthrough in the form of a new material, and unless this breakthrough comes quickly, all of Georgia, as well as most of the United States, could become infested with fire ants and the work, energy and money that Georgia has spent for nearly 20 years will go down the drain. We do not even know if Georgia will have any Mirex bait to use during the two year phase out period or not. The only U.S. producer of Mirex is refusing to sell the product to the state of Mississippi which operates the only plant formulating the fire ant bait. The Dept. of Agriculture staff is now working closely with county agents and other agricultural groups to develop recommendations on the best way for the public and especially farmers to deal with the imported fire ant problem. 
Sisters 4-H Winners 
Regina and Rena Everett, Fairmont, will represent Georgia at the National 4-H Congress in Chicago in November. Regina took state honors in Clothing and Textiles and Rena won in Veterinary Science. Both are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. William Everett.

Presidential China 
Being Displayed 
The Smithsonian Institution has organized an exhibition of American Presidential China with 120 objects including examples of china from the capitol, Washington Order of Cincinnati Service, the Martha Washington "States" Service through examples of the Lenox Service now in use for State Occasions. 
The exhibition will be displayed at the Atlanta Historical Society Swan House, 3099 Andrews Drive, N.W., Atlanta, November 2 through December 31.

Field Dressing Best 
For You And Game 
Conservation of game through wise use is the goal of hunters in Georgia. Through conservation, hunters prevent waste of meat of animals which they shoot during the hunting season. 
A little extra effort in the field will guarantee many hours of pleasure at your dinner table. One of the choicest of all meats is venison a properly dressed deer can supply a normal Georgia family with enough steaks, chops, roasts, and stew for more than a month. 
BE PREPARED 
Be prepared in advance to bring home a deer, whether you actually succeed or not. Wise deer hunters take along a sharp knife, a piece of cheese- 
cloth or a clean rag, a 12-inch piece of string, a 12-foot piece of quarter-inch rope, and their hunting license. 
If you are a resident hunter under 16 years of age or a holder of a honorary hunting license over 65 years of age, you can obtain two free deer tags from any office of the State Game and Fish Commission before going hunting. 
DRESSING OUT 
Tag the animal as soon as you kill it. A deer can be effectively field dressed while merely laying on the ground, preferably with the head uphill on sloping ground. Bleeding by cutting the jugular vein in the neck is not necessary as most fatal wounds sever enough arteries and veins to provide adequate bleeding. 
Slit open the carcass from crotch to briskett, point between the forelegs, gently, cutting with the tip of the knife just under the skin. Be careful not to puncture the intestines or the paunch. In all operations prevent hair from coming in contact with the meat. Cut around the anus and sex organs, so as to loosen the entrails. 
REMOVING INTESTINES 
If the bladder is full, it should be tied off with a piece of string. The large intestine can easily be separated from the pelvis with your fingers. Work the membrances loose from the front and back, then pull the intestine through the pelvic girdle on the inside. 
The whole intestinal system can now be rolled or lifted out of the body cavity. 
CLEANING CHEST CAVITY 
Next, the diaphram dividing the stomach cavity from the chest cavity is removed by cutting it next to the ribs. Reach as far up into the chest cavity as possible and cut the windpipe out. Now pull out all the chest organs, including the lungs, heart, and liver. Lay the heart, kidneys, and liver aside for immediate use as camp meat. 
The body cavity should be wiped as clean and dry of all blood and loose (Continued On Page 8)

The first group of the cactus family is the leafy cactus or Pereskieae. These plants are very primitive cacti including some jungle trees, shrubs and vines. 
All these cacti have sprawling woody stems, broad evergreen leaves and clusters of flat round flowers. They have two types of spines: some straight for protection, others hooked for climbing. 
In the tropics, Pereskieae are grown as ornamentals and hedges. The most popular variety is the "lemon vine" (P. aculeata), a shrubby ten or more foot climber with lemon tree-like flat leaves. In its native surroundings, it bears clusters of fragrant creamy pink flowers. 
Pereskieae are perfect examples of the lowest forms of cacti, similar to the ancient plants from which all cacti evolved. They can be grown as novelty houseplants but are quite tender and unable to withstand temperatures below 50 degrees. They like large pots and lots of water during their growing season. Cuttings should be rooted at once without the usual drying period.

tissue as possible, preferably with a clean piece of cheesecloth or a clean rag. 
If the bullet passed through the paunch or intestines, it may be necessary to rinse the body cavity with clean water. If this is done, be sure to carefully wipe the cavity dry as soon as possible and protect the carcass from further wetting to avoid spoiling the meat. 
The heart, kidneys, and liver may now be placed back inside the deer for easy carrying. 
COOLING 
Now that the deer is dressed, it's time to get it to the road or to camp. The safest and easiest way is to drag him, especially if you're hunting on open or bare terrain by yourself. 
Once you reach your destination, your deer should be hung immediately by the antlers or front legs and his sides propped to continue the cooling process. Meat spoilage frequently occurs while the carcass travels from the hunting area to its final destination at home or in a freezer plant.

Remember that hunting regulations are designed to protect our balance of wildlife and to assure that the population of deer and other wildlife will not be depleted or become too dense for survival. We urge each of you to be aware of these hunting regulations and to follow them carefully.

Growers Continue First Photo Yearbook Peach Mkting Order On Agriculture Available 
 
Georgia peach growers voted during September to continue the federal marketing order regulating interstate shipment of Georgia-grown peaches says the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). In a referendum conducted by USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), 80 percent of the growers voting favored continuation of the program. Voters who favored the program grew 91 percent of the peaches produced by all the growers voting. Anyone who grew Georgia peaches for market in 1976 was eligible to vote. The federal marketing order covering Georgia peaches requires that a referendum be held every 2 years' to see if growers still want the program. The marketing order and its companion agreement were developed at the request of growers and handlers to establish grade and size regulations for peaches and to set minimum standards of quality and maturity for peaches marketed in interstate commerce.
