GAC Celebrates Tenth Anniversary The Georgia Agribusiness Council this year celebrates its tenth anniversary as a statewide, non-profit, membership organization, representing and promoting the agribusiness industry of the state of Georgia. It was organized in 1966, upon recommendation of the Ag Alumni Association of Georgia, to bring about better communications between the agricultural and business interests of our state. At that time, agriculture Georgia's largest industry- was not being properly recognized by major business and industry. Now ten year's later, there appears to be a greater appreciation (Our guest columnist this week is Fisher L. As current President of the Georgia Agribusiness Council, I believe much progress has been made, not only to bring about an appreciation of agriculture, but we have expanded into fields of agribusiness development, legislation, information, publications and services. Our Georgia Agribusiness Council works closely with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the approximately 75 agriculturally-related organizations of the state. We keep in close contact with our agricultural extension and educational leaders. Every effort is made to involve our membership and keep them informed to carry out our mission. Our Board of Directors reads like "Who's Who" in the Georgia agribusiness industry. They are successful leaders representing every area of Georgia. Just recently our Agribusiness De- (Continued On Page 8) Tommy Irvin Needs Largest Pumpkin Georgian Can Grow The Georgia Department of Agriculture needs your help in locating the state's biggest pumpkin which will be used to represent Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin in a challenge match with Massachusetts Commissioner of Agriculture Frederick Winthrop. In a cooperative effort with Delta Airlines, which inaugurates a new non-stop flight to Boston on Sept. 15, Commissioner Irvin will send Commissioner Winthrop a "token" pumpkin with the challenge that Georgia can produce a bigger pumpkin by Halloween than can the State' of Massachusetts. Come Halloween, the Georgia entry will be flown to Boston and weighed with its Yankee competitor. Delta will give $1 per pound to the favorite charity of the Commissioner who has the winning pumpkin and 50 cents per pound to the other Commissioner's charity. The Georgia pumpkin will be carved into a jack-o-lantern and used as part of the witch's array during the annual Halloween festivities held at the "witch famous" town of Salem, Mass. Commissioner Irvin, a Mason and Shriner, has chosen the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital as recipient of his charity dona- Continued On Page 8} Rabbit Breeders Hold Annual Show The Annual Fall Rabbit Show, sponsored by the Decatur Rabbit Breeder's Association, will be held Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Atlanta Farmer's Market in Forest Park. Plan, Produce, Utilize Winter Annual Grazing Many farmers and cattlemen are finding winter annual grazing crops to be quite valuable. Rye, wheat, oats, ryegrass, vetch, lupine, crimson and arrowleaf clovers are plants most often used for winter annual grazing crops in the southeast. These plants are most often used in mixtures containing at least one small grain and a legume plus ryegrass. However, pure stands of any of the winter annuals may be used for grazing. Lupine is usually used as a pure stand. Festival Winter annual grazing crops are wel1 adapted for a double cropping system. They can be Old-Fashion Fun planted over a period of four to eight weeks in the fall. Early The Annual Sorghum Festival will be held October 15-17 at Fort Sorhum in Blairsville. The Festival, sponsored by the Blairsville Jaycees, will highlight many events including old-fashion syrup making, a syrup sopping contest, log sawing, a greased pole contest and a moonshine still. planting usually provides earlier grazing. Winter annual forage plants produce higher quality forage over a long period of time than any other forage crop generally grown in the south. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, September 8, 1976 me letttUr Dear Editor: Recently on a trip South we noticed on both sides of the road a beautiful green vine that spread rapidly and covered the entire area, including trees and rocks. It was very pretty and we are interested in knowing more about it as to its characteristics, rate of growth, if it will grow here and how we j might obtain a start. Frank Tatum Princeton, New Jersey (Editor's note: How many truckloads do you want? The beautiful green vine is kudzu, an imported legume, originally recommended to landowners for grazing and erosion control. It was imported from China and Japan many years ago, and having no natural enemies, has gone wild. The only effective control is heavy grazing, but if your livestock can't eat their weight in kudzu - don't get it started. Its almost impossible to eradicate. Spraying with 2-4-D in May and June when the stems and foliage are tender will help but when you've got several acres covered in kudzu, that's a lot of spraying.) Horses, mules, ponies for sale People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication. All horses offered for ad- vertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days. On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only. Page 8 9ft (Kiw ft? Spanish moss is weird. It is one of the most unusual phenomena in nature and there is nothing else like it. Contrary to popular belief, Spanish moss does not kill trees, nor is it a parasite. It is an epiphytite or a plant that grows upon another (such as a tree) nonparasitically. Its moisture and nutrients are derived from the air, rain and particles accumulating around the plant. Spanish moss is one of the most characteristic plants in the South. It is native to the southern United States and tropics. It must, however, have mild temperatures and abundant humidity, which restricts its growth to the southern part of Georgia. Also known as Florida or long moss, Tillandsia usneoides belongs to the pineapple or bromeliad family. Its grey delicate leaves are usually about three inches long but its strands often hang as much as 20 feet. There are very small yellow flowers but they are inconspicuous and usually go unnoticed. Before the days of styrofoam, fiber-filled and polyester, Spanish moss served as a packing material in crates as well as upholstery. Its main drawback was the presence of spider mites which could cause problems in 'chair cushions if the filler had not been specially treated. Spanish moss is usually not grown or cultivated except as a novelty. Because it requires atmospheric moisture, a greenhouse is just about the only place it will survive outside its native habitat. Valera Jessee Vegetable, Melon Production Up Spring vegetable and melon production in Georgia was above that of the same period last year, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Spring quarter (April, May, June) production of snapbeans was up 18 percent from the 1975 level while the total value of the crop showed an 8 percent increase. Spring cabbage production also increased and was up a whopping 45 percent from the previous year. THE MARKET BULLETIN GAC Celebrates Largest Pumpkin (Continued From Page 1) velopment Division coordinated efforts to locate a major agribusiness industry in Georgia. But we would never have done it without the support of many other individuals and groups. It was a team effort all the way. We are striving to find more regional and world markets for Georgia's agricultural commodities. Our GAC has worked to influence positive agricultural legislation again joining with other groups in the best interest of the industry. Our Board meets quarterly and holds an annual meeting. We make an annual trip to Washington to keep hi contact with our Congressional leaders and USDA officials. Every attempt is made to be represented at agricultural conferences and seminars. Our Speakers Bureau travels the state, speaking out for agribusiness. We sponsored 24 major projects this year to promote! agribusiness and support agriculturally-related youth groups and other similar organizations. The Georgia Agribusiness Council offices are maintained in the Georgia Department of Agriculture Building in Atlanta. A full-time staff is available at all times to assist in developing and complementing agriculture. We are a true service organization with a definite service to all Georgians. GAC deals with ideas and resources more than land and produce. Yes, it has been a great ten years. We have had slow but effective growth. I sincerely believe the Georgia Agribusiness Council will continue to expand its program and services and be a major factor in further developing the Agribusiness industry of our state. Please join us in our efforts and contact us if we can be of assistance. Call (404) 656-3698. Four Youngsters Drive To Victory Four-H'ers at the State 4-H Tractor and Automotive Driving Championships and Small Engine Project Championship held at the Macon Fairgrounds recently demonstrated just how modern their mechanical skills were on and off the farm. In addition to skill tests and engine repair, each champion had to pass a written exam. Jimmy Rice of Watkinsville, won the small engine project with a demonstration of the many uses and functions of small horsepower engines. Tommy Poole of Tifton, had to drive a tractor with trailer around an obstacle course in order to capture the tractor driving event. And Vickie Diass, Savannah, and Mark Ballentine, Lindale, won the auto driving event by not only passing the written exam but beating the clock on a timed obstacle course. As winners of these special 4H projects, these four young people will represent Georgia in the .Eastern Regional 4-H Contest in Richmond, Virginia next month. (Continued From Page 1) tion and the Massachusetts pumpkin will be given to the Scottish Rite hospital for use as a jack-o-lantern by children confined there on Halloween. Other pumpkins will be distributed by Commissioner Irvin to children's hospitals and wards. After Oct. 1, Market Bulletin readers with unusually large pumpkins in the field are urged to write or call Chick Hosch at the State Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334 who is helping to coordinate the "Great Pumpkin , Challenge". Call him collect at 404-656-3690. Winter Grazing (Continued From Page 1) considered and the forage must be utilized efficiently. Research data throughout the south indicates that 4,000 pounds of dry matter or more per acre can be produced with winter grazing crops. Considering the 20 percent protein content and 70 percent TDN content of 4,000 pounds of forage, the nutritional value is equal to two tons of 20 percent range cubes (protein supplement) and more than 50 bushels of corn (TDN content). Seeding rates of 100 to 120 pounds of a small grain plus 20 to 25 pounds of ryegrass is a good mixture. Legumes such as crimson clover, 15 to 20 pounds per acre, or arrowleaf clover, 6 to 8 pounds per acre, or a mixture of both legumes may be used to an advantage where adapted. Legumes usually extend the grazing period and add nitrogen to the soil. Rye usually provides more grazing in early fall and winter than other small grains. However, rye matures early in the spring. A mixture of rye, ryegrass, and arrowleaf clover may provide grazing through late spring. Seasonal Production of Certain Winter Annuals (Coastal Plows Experiment Station, THton, GA) _______5 year average_______ Average Clipping Dates Crop Rye Oats Wheat Ryegrass 11-30 1-8 2-20 3-30 Percentage 21 22 23 34 16 23 17 44 17 19 23 41 3 20 18 59 High quality winter annual forage can usually be utilized most efficiently by limiting the amount cattle are allowed to consume daily and supplement with other feed materials to provide a balanced ration for the cattle. When grazing only is used, the stocking rate must be limited to approximately one feeder animal per acre. By using supplemental feed, the forage crop can support 1.75 to 2.25 animals per acre depending on amount and kind of supplemental feeds. W. H. What is a yellow daisy and why have a festival? Viguiera Porteri, commonly known as the Confederate Yellow Daisy, is found in the Piedmont region of Georgia, but nowhere is it found in such abundance as at Stone Mountain Park. The flower is famous for its brilliant golden color and strange growing cycle. The plant peeks out of cracks and crevices in the granite in early spring and barely lives through the dry, hot summer. Many plants die from lack of nourishment. When fall rains come, the remaining plants blossom and cover the slopes of Stone Mountain with a golden carpet. Microwave Cook-off The microwave cook-off will be held at the Macon Mall on September 18. The cook-off, first of its kind in the nation, is sponsored by the Home Service Committee of the Georgia Electrification Council, and is open to the public. Recipes will be prepared from 10 AM to 1 PM, and 2 PM to 3 PM.
