FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 62 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, July 14, 1976 7s The Time To Begin Again The Bicentennial has come at a good time. It has been good for us. I believe it may provide the impetus Americans need to go forward. To begin again. Following Vietnam, Watergate, the economic slump - Americans everywhere seemed to be in the doldrums. Many of us were growing cynical, depressed and apathetic. We needed to wave the flag, light up the skies and most of all to reflect. Even through the commercialism the celebration had to touch most every American. We were reminded of the trials and tribulations of our forefathers. We were reminded that nothing worthwhile comes easy. That every generation from Plymouth Rock to space age has to work, to fight to build in order for this country and its ideals to survive. In this reflection I trust we will see that it has been and is still worth the fight. What American after remembering the men and women of the 1770's, what they endured, what they gave their lives to secure for us, could say, "It is too hard now. It is time to quit. I don't care." Looking back has been good. We have been reminded of what the basic beliefs and goals of Americans have been and should be. But now it is time to begin again. For 200 years now we have been reaping the benefits of the seeds of freedom, faith and independence sown by our founding fathers. We must now sow seeds for our future generations of responsibility, patriotism, renewed faith in the principles upon which this, the greatest of all countries was founded. Let us recall the American Creed as adopted by our Congress many years ago and renew its pledge in our lives: I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed. A democracy in a republic, a GEORGIA'S TOP TEN Soybeans - #7 Soybeans have developed very rapidly as a major crop in Georgia. This is attributed to the increased use of soybeans for human consumption and livestock and poultry feeds. In 1924, the first year of soybean estimates, the average per acre yield was 5 bushels. In 1974, the yield was up to 25.5 bushels per acre. Soybean production is concentrated in the central and east central portion of the state. Pork Producers work Pays For Pick Promoter Larry Lee, a former associate editor of the Progressive Farmer magazine, has been named Ext !| ecutive Vice President of the Georgia Pork Producers Association, P.O. Farm Department off National Safety Council. sovreign nation of many sovreign states, a perfect union, one inseparable, established upon those principles of justice, equality and humanity, for which all American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I, therefore, believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, to defend it against its enemies. Ogleniorpe 4-H'ers Youngsters from Oglethorpe county found out that community work pays off literally. A $100 first place prize has been awarded to the Oglethorpe County 4-H Community Pride Club for improvements made to their community, say sources with the Standard Oil Company and the Cooperative Extension Service, sponsors of the "Community Pride" program. In addition to the cash award, Theresa Noell, Lexington; Merry Findley, Stephens; Nan Newton, Maxeys; and Jackie Underwood, Crawford, will receive an expense-paid trip to a "Community Pride" workshop in Tifton, July 19-23. The program is designed to stimulate young people's interest in their communities. Other Georgia counties receiving awards for community improvement projects are: Walton, second; Bleckley, third; Oconee, fourth, and Haralson, fifth. Big Business Agriculture is the Nation's biggest industry with assets January 1, 1976 totaling $590 billion, about 13 per cent above the year earlier level. This amounts to about three-fifths of the capital assets of all manufacturing corporations in the United States. Number 28 Commercial Pesticide Applicators Required To Have Certification Changes in Federal legislation have necessitated changes in Georgia Law which will require all commercial pesticide applicators (i.e., applying pesticides for hire) to become certified by January 1, 1977. Commercial applicators may be certified in the following categories. 1. a. Agricultural Plant Pest Control. b. Agricultural Animal Pest Control. 2. Forest Pest Control. 3. Ornamental and Turf Pest Control. 4. Seed Treatment. 5. Aquatic Pest Control. 6. Right-of-Way Pest Control. 7. Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Health Related Pest Control. This category includes the following: a. Those working on a non-fee basis in conjunction with structures (for example - government or industry employees). b. Those working on a fee basis in conjunction with structures - these will need to meet the requirements of the Structural Pest Control Commission. c. Health related pest control non government employees not working in conjunction with structures. 8. Public Health Pest Control (governmental employees only). 9. Regulatory Pest Control. 10. Demonstration and Research Pest Control. 11. Aerial Applicator Pest Control. Training manuals on which the exam is based are available for most categories. Horses, mules, ponies for sale People who are buying uud breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication. All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days. Please place the following ad under _____________________ heading. Page 8 THE MARKET BULLETIN 9 AH fiiegfcsli SiweH.ttat RMe? Have you ever crushed the leaves of an old fashion rose and discovered some have an apple aroma? If you found the apple smell, you found a sweetbriar rose. The English Sweetbriar or Eglantine rose is a multi-branched shrub rose often growing to a height of eight feet. It has small oval leaves some less than an inch long with five to seven leaflets., After a summer rain, the apple smell is especially noticeable but alas despite its enchanting qualities, the foliage is very susceptible to fungus disease, causing it to be nicknamed the rusty leaved rose. The flowers are small and usually have five petals. One horticulturist kindly referred to them as "simple roses". At best they are very light pink or white followed by orange red hips. The value of the sweetbriar rose has been in its adaptability to be grafted to other roses. Its unique qualities of fragrant foliage and graceful growing habit when combined with other roses is quite desirable. A great deal of sentimental value is attached to sweetbriar roses because they are long-lived plants. So it is conceivable that one rose could be passed through many generations and that great great grandmother's rose is still going strong hundreds of years later - Valera Jessee Wednesday, July 14, 1976 Calendar July 14, 15 - Ga.
