FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin irK Volume 62 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ^ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, June 16, 1976 P.R. Swilk Demand For Cotton Up This Year American consumers are looking for more cotton this year than they have in a long time according to people who are in the business of gathering information about cotton. Everything points to a great year for cotton, in fact, according to the figures cotton should have at least two good years in a row. Information from the Market Research Corporation of America shows that for twelve successive months cotton has outgained synthetics in pounds sold at retail as compared to sales in the same month of the previous year. The United States Department of Agriculture projects the domestic mill use of cotton for the 1975-76 cotton crop year at 7.3 million bales as compared to 5.9 million bales used by .domestic mills in the 1974-75 crop year. At the same I time imports of cotton goods have been running at a record rate in order to meet consumer demand for cotton. This increase of imports of cotton textile goods is an indication that domestic mills have not adequately responded (Our guest columnist this week is P. R. (Bobby) Smith, Chairman Georgia Cotton Commission. P. 0. Box 5958, Beechwood Of- fice Bldg. 11, Athens 30604.)________ to the strong consumer demand for cotton. According to The National Cotton Council cotton increased its share of the total fiber market to 30.8 per cent for the first quarter of 1976. This is a greater share of the market than cotton has had for the last three years. Total domestic cotton supplies for 1975-76 of 14.0 million bales is more than a million bales less than a year earlier. The supply includes a 5.7 million bale carryover and 8.3 million bale production. The projected consumption of 7.3 million bales and exports of 3.5 million bales will leave a carryover of 3.2 million bales on August 1, 1976. With the April 15th intention to plant report, average abandonment, and a 197175 average yield of 470 pounds per acre we can expect about a 10.4 million bale production for the 1976- (Continued On Page 12) GEORGIA'S TOP TEN Hogs and Pigs - No. 5 In 1920, 80 percent of the 310,000 farms in Georgia had hogs and pigs. Most of the pork was consumed on the farm where produced until the late 30's when sales surpassed the value of home consumption each year. In 1974 hogs and pigs contributed $170,765,000 to cash farm receipts, earning it 5th place hi Georgia cash farm receipts, and llth place in national production. Changes Affect Special Canned Foods What effect does long storage have on canned foods, and how long can they be safely stored? From the standpoint of safety, canned products have an indefinite shelf life as long as the can remains unopened and is not bulging or leaking. This is because microorganisms that cause food spoilage and food poisoning are destroyed by heat and sealed out during the canning process. As long as the can or jar remains intact, these organisms cannot re-enter and the food will not spoil. However, chemical changes affect the eating quality such as color, texture, taste and nutritive value of some foods. The degree of change depends upon many factors including humidity, nature of the food, type of container and length of time the product is (Continued On Page 12) Handicraft Issue Coming July 21. Market News Office Reports Peaches, Potatoes The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that its Thomasville market news office has begun seasonal reporting of potatoes and peaches. Number 24 Farmers May Find Practical Method Soybean For Hay Soybeans for hay may be helpful for many farmers as an annual hay crop. A good crop of soybean hay can be produced without the use of nitrogen fertilizer. Soybeans require a medium to high soil level of phosphorus and potassium for good growth. On low fertility soil, a basic application fertilizer should be applied before or at planting time. Soybeans may be planted in rows or broadcast. A high plant population will reduce stem size, thus aid in drying time when hay is harvested. One and one-half to two bushels of beans planted in twelve inch rows produced top yield of small hay in Mississippi tests. Beans planted in rows grew off faster than broadcast planted beans. However, there was no difference in final yield. Beans planted by mid-June produce more than twice the yield of hay than beans planted July 5. Full season varieties of soybeans such as Cobb, Bragg and Ransom produce more forage than early maturing beans. Soybeans should be harvested in the early bloom stage of growth for high protein and energy pontent. The use of a hay conditioner when the beans are cut will significantly aid in time required to dry. A yield of two to three tons of hay per acre can be expected from a good growth of beans. When the equivalent value of soybean hay is considered, two tons of hay properly harvested would contain more protein than 3,000 pounds of 20 percent .range cubes and more energy than 50 bushels of corn. Fertilizer and seed costs for two tons of hay could range from $10 to $25 per acre. Many farmers may find growing soybeans for hay a practical and economical method of supplying additional cattle feed in 1976. ^ Polled Hereford Day The Georgia Polled Hereford Association will sponsor Polled Hereford Cattle Day, June 19, at Pine Acres Farm in Mershon. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, June 16, 1976 we (ji_d let^te^u* Dear Editor: I want to express my opinion on the Vidalia, or Glennville [if you please] onion. We have known this onion for only two years and look forward to the day they are put on the market. They are perfectly delicious! We keep them as long as we can, and use them in so many different ways. To keep them from rotting [we buy fifty pounds at the time], I store them in nylon panty hose. To do this I place a tie that come on bread bags between each one. This keeps them from touching. They are then hung on the back porch where they are kept dry. By doing this we never have any of those precious onions go to waste. Lillian S. Evans Jackson, Georgia 30233 Farm employment No commercial, industrial or domestic employment permitted. IMeaM- place the following ad under Page 12 W tot 9ft Cattage "In the gardens of Midas there grew roses that were so sweet that no others can vie with them and their blossoms have as many as 60 petals apiece." Herodotus, Greek Historian 410 B.C. Rosa Centifolia, or cabbage rose derived its name from the unique characteristic of having so many petals per flower that the bloom never completely opened. The petals envelope one another like the leaves of a cabbage. Historians have recorded the appearance of cabbage roses in monastic gardens in England during the time of Chaucer who referred to them as "the Rose of Rhone"; the "Batavian Rose", is pictured in early Dutch still-life paintings (Holland was known as Batavia in the 14th century); and Shakespeare immortalized the flower as the "Provencal Rose" in his work. Cabbage roses are charming old fashion flowers easily grown in Georgia. They have prickly stems, five leaflets, bloom once a year in late spring and maintain a three to five foot shrub-like appearance. Their color can range from soft pink to purple, all with an intense old rose fragrance. A well-known variety of the cabbage rose is the moss rose (R. Centifolia Muscosa). There is little difference between the two in appearance except that the moss rose stalks and base are covered with "hairy green moss", a quality that adds to rather than distracts from its appearance and fragrance.
