FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/'n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 62 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, May 12, 1976 Number 19 Rufrett Ducks Unlimited Benefit Wildlife The Georgia Committee of Ducks Unlimited was organized over 30 years ago for the purpose of supporting its international parent organization Ducks Unlimited Inc. Today in Georgia there exist 18 active chapters servicing almost every part of the State. In 1975 the 2,400 Georgia members raised over $110,000 which is being used to construct and manage wetland habitat projects on the Canadian nesting grounds. Funds are raised in Ga. and all other states to support this conservation work. These Canadian breeding areas supply over 70 percent of the (Our guest columnist this week is Robert L. Harrison, Ga. Ducks Unlimited State Chairmon, 501 E. 44th Street, Savannah 31405.) wild waterfowl for the entire North American continent. Without these vital areas the future of our waterfowl resource would be doubtful. Sixty-seven wildlife habitat projects were completed in 1975 by Ducks Unlimited. While these projects were constructed primarily for waterfowl they also benefit over 200 other species of wildlife. This year alone the private, non-profit group completed its work on 386,000 acres of prime wetland habitat. In it's nearly 40 year history the organiation has set aside a total of 2.2 million acres for wildlife. DU members are proud of the organization's financial record. Since its inception, it has been Ducks Unlimited's goal to use 80 cents out of every $1 collected directly for habitat construction, with a mere 20 cents being used for promotion, field operations, administration, etc. Ducks Unlimited now has 170,000 members in the United States. It is growing every day. If you are interested in wildlife conservation and would like to know more about this organization, please write. May--TRACTOR SAFETY MONTH. Farm Department of National Safety Council. Peanut Contest Is Near The chicken and egg business hi the state during the last decade has increased tremendously and is a marked change from the small individual farm flock that was prevalent in 1940. Georgia did not produce as many eggs as its people consumed prior to 1957. Up until this time a considerable portion of eggs used to hatch broiler chicks were supplied by other states. California is the only state that exceeds Georgia in egg production, even though Georgia ranks first in the nation in all chickens and eggs [including broilers]. 1974 totals show an income of $293,000,000 or 13.4 per cent of cash farm receipts. May 23-29 The Georgia Peanut Princess Contest is scheduled for July 23 in Tifton, Georgia. This contest is an annual event co-sponsored by the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts and the Georgia Farm Bureau Women. Applications and rules may be obtained from County Extension agents, county chairman of Farm Bureau Women's groups, County. Farm Bureau presidents, or from the Georgia Peanut Commission office in Tifton. Each contestant must be the daughter of a Georgia peanut farmer. The deadline for entering the contest is June 11, 1976. Rabbit Club Formed The newly formed "Coosa Valley Rabbit Club" will hold its next meeting May 23, at the City Police Courtroom in Rome, beginning at 4 p.m. All interested persons are encouraged to attend. For additional information you may contact the temporary secretary, James D. Black, Route 4, Box 2255, Lafayette, 30728. Soil Stewardship Week To Be Observed "IVe Begin Again" Is 30th Theme More than 1,000,000 people in Georgia each year actively observe "Soil Stewardship Week" through consideration, programs and projects. As this special week approaches, to be observed nationally May 23 through May 29, it is the time to consider our Agriculture Project Winner Announced Alan Pope, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry L. Pope, Cairo, has been selected as state winner in the 4-H agriculture project. The award was based on a record of two-years worth of outstanding agricultural activities of the Grady County youth. . Alan wins expense-paid trips to the State 4-H Congress held in Atlanta and to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago. responsibilities to our land and water resources. We should make plans through our clubs, schools and churches an observance which will be educational and productive. The theme of this year's observance is "We Begin Again . . ." with reference to our beginning a third century as a nation and a third decade of Soil Stewardship observance. The week was begun by a farm magazine as Soil Stewardship Sunday in 1946, but at- Peanut Short Course The Annual Peanut Seed Short Course will be held May 20 at the Rural Development Center in Tifton. There is a vast amount of work yet to be done by those devoted to the goals of soil stewardship and a better environment. As we begin again, let us commit ourselves to those actions we truthfully believe will be worthy, not only of our country, but of ourselves as responsible Americans entrusted with the care and future of our land. Let us also remember as we prepare our observance of Soil Stewardship Week in Georgia, that we depend utterly on the care and bounty of our God-given wealth of productive soil, and all the resources associated with it. Horses, mules, ponies for sale People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication. All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days. On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April. The Bourbon rose originated on the Isle of Bourbon (now Reunion), a French colony in -the Indian Ocea near Madagascar in the mid 1800's. It was imported to France and from there made its way to the North American con tinent by 1900. Rosa Borboniana is a hybrid wild or shrub rose, developed by crossing the Rosa Chinensis and Rosa Gallica. The most well known varieties are: La Reine Victoria, developed in 1872, very double rose pink blooms. Souvenir de la Malmaison, developed circa 1850, flesh pink blooms, cupped so that in cool damp climates they may not completely open, regarded as the epitome of the old rose beauty. Zephirine Drouhin, developed 1868, completely thornless, semi-climber, called the "relaxed shrub", bright carmine pink buds, semi-double blooms, light green copper tinted foliage.
