FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 61 9- R. Odm Georgia Peanut Is Number One The Georgia Peanut Commission is a grower-financed self-help organization for, by and of Georgia s 21,000 peanut growers. Georgia is the nation's number one producer of peanuts. Perhaps i this success can, in part, be contributed to the Commission's work in the areas of education, promotion, and research. The Commission's efforts in these arleas is supervi- sed and directed by the Board of Directors which is composed of peanut growers from throughout the (Our guest columnist this week is J. R. Odom, Chairman, Georgia Peanut Commission, P. O. Box 967, Tifton 31794.)_______________' peanut-producing areas of Georgia. We are active in many peanut-related programs on the national and international level. Peanut production has reached an all time high in Georgia, but now more than ever before growers need to join together to facex the many problems that we meet every day as peanut growers. Peanut Progress Day is an informative meeting of Georgia growers where we discuss our common goals and problems. Progress Day will be held Tuesday, February 25, on the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College campus in Tifton. We have planned an educational and enlightening program for this year and hope to have a large crowd of producers and processors present. Progress Day activities include a variety of events, such as a recipe contest, machinery display, pesticide exhibits and new-products exhibits. Drawings will be held for several door prizes and a complimentary luncheon will be served to all in attendance. We do ask that persons in the peanut industry planning to attend Progress Day notify the Peanut Commission at least one week in advance so that we can prepare sufficient food for the luncheon. Research in all areas of the peanut industry is conducted in our state (Continued On Page 12) Wednesday, February 5, 1975 Number 6 - STOP - Irvin Protests If you are receiving two MARKET BULLETINS or wish to have your BULLETIN stopped, please clip the address label and mail it in to us, with the word STOP written on it. Bean Crop Makes A National Champ A'sst Commissioner Receives Honor The National Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine has conferred honorary membership on Dr. Guy W. Eberhardt, Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture at ceremonies held at the University of Georgia. The aim of the organization is for the constant advancement of the veterinary profession and to promote higher educational requirements, high scholarship and to promote research in matters pertaining to the welfare and diseases of animals and promote ethical standards in veterinary medicine. Priority Changes Natural Gas Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin charged Tuesday that Federal Power Commission and natural gas company actions changing natural gas priorities are threatening fertilizer supplies and food production in Georgia. In a telegram to John Nassikas, chairman of the FPC in Washington, Irvin said two nitrogen fertilizer plants in neighboring states, suppling 15% of Georgia nitrogen materials, have been closed down, because of gas curtailments and FPC's refusal to provide emergency supplies. Both fertilizer plants effected sell nitrogen supplies to farmers in Georgia, and Irvin said one of the state's largest suppliers has notified its dealers to anticipate a 15 percent reduction in supplies this year as compared to 1974, which in itself was a tight supply year. In addition to the plant food (Continued On Page 12) Companion Gardening Plants Compliment, Aid One Another Wesley strung green bean culls and dried them out to make "leatherbritches." Last spring when 11-year-old Wesley Taylor planted beans in the rich, black loam of Rabun County, he had visions of banking a huge profit at harvest time. But when he took his yield to market, he wound up pocketing only $7.30. Yet on the basis of that crop, the youngster from Tiger was named a national winner in the Young America Horticulture Contest sponsored by the National Junior Horticulture Association. Wesley spent most of his summer vacation in the bean field. When the bean seed went into his one-acre plot, he saw to it that 550 pounds of 6-8-6 fertilizer went in with it. Before picking time he cultivated twice and dusted twice with an insecticide. Patterning himself after today's successful farmers who practice modern agricultural techniques, (Continued On Page 12) Companion gardening is based on the mutual influences of living organisms. This method is the supplementing of chemical and physical reactions in gar- dening. As Goethe puts it, "Nothing happens in living Nature that is not in relation to the whole." Plants growing together in a gar- can open up the ground for other den or field may interact because one species with less deep roots, or plants tall-growing species gives shade for may interact simply by competing for another plant. Deep rooting plants water or nutrients. fu The following are examples of companion gardening. Apple trees - chives growing near the roots will help prevent scab. Nasturtiums around the base will repel woolly aphis. Beans - pole beans grown around a block of corn can protect the com from too much wind. The beans also add nitrogen to the soil which is used by the corn. Cora - does well with beans and peas. Melons, squash, pumpkins and cucumbers benefit from the shade of corn. The early settlers found the Indians growing corn and pumpkins together - one of the earliest native American examples of companion gar- dening. HBbers - appreciate the shade offered by corn. A few radish seeds sown in cucumber hills (Continued On Page 12) Page 2 we qd letteu ' _M3PF Dear Editor: The recent articles on beekeeping printed in the MARKET BULLETIN have been most interesting and I have kept them for future use. I wonder if you would like to hear how my late father, Dr. James Luther Gable of Brooks cared for his bees many years ago. He had more than eighty hives of bees and there was a plot of land at our home that was called the "bee yard". This spot was kept clean and neat, just for the bees. Today, people call the bee yard an apiary. The hives were called "bee gums" and were usually made of rough undressed lumber, so the wax would hold better to the hives and there were cross-pieces in the hives to help hold the honey. My father would study the ways and habits of the bees and knew the Queen, Drone and working bees by sight. He liked to Study the Queen's cells and watch the workers as they brought their ladders of nectar to be made into honey. He liked to listen to the hum of the bees in the gum at night. He was especially thrilled when the swarming season began in the early spring. The bees would light on a tree limb and my father would put a gum on the ground under the limb after the gum had been rubbed with peach tree leaves. Then he would shake the bees off the limb. He would watch the Queen bee as she led the other bees into the hive. They really looked like they were marching in a straight line. Sometimes a bell was rung to make the bees settle quicker. In late May my father would start taking the honey out of the hives. This was called "robbing the bees". There was a plentiful supply of honey for our very large family and always enough to give to the neighbors. No one thought of selling honey in those days. The smokers were made from pieces of old quilts and tied in long bundles with string. My mother packed the honey away in large churns and lard cans and other vessels. The dark honey was squeezed by hand and made strained honey. The chunks of squeezed honey comb were put in water and let set for a few days. Then it was strained through a cloth and was called metheglin. Later it turned into honey vinegar which was fine for making pickles. The old wax was melted and made into bees wax which was very useful around the house. Dad had a special knife to cut the honey out of the gums. He made the knife especially for bee robbing. Most people like the comb honey better than the strained. Awhile back I read an article written by a noted author and he called the comb honey, "cone" honey. I wonder which is correct. It really is a wax cone that holds the honey. Beekeeping is so different now, but it is still not fully understood how the bees make the wax and the honey. It is so interesting to study the life of the honey bee. Nina Gable Brooks, Georgia Farm employment Want work on chicken farm. Mr. Leonard W. Holloway, Jr., Rt. 3, Metter 30439. Fall-grown vegetables are usually of a very high quality. ZINC IMPORTANT Although plants use zinc in small amounts, a deficiency of this element can severely restrict plant growth and yield. Zinc is essential in the formation of certain plant enzymes. Zinc deficiency in Georgia is found primarily in corn grown on the sandy soils of the Coastal Plains. Coarse textured sandy soils generally contain less zinc than other soil types. COLONIAL EXPORTS Agricultural exports formed an important part of the economy of colonial Georgia. In 1763, exports from the colony consisted of 7,500 barrels of rice, 9,633 pounds of indigo, 1,250 bushels of corn, and forestry and wildlife products such as deer and beaver skins, cowhides, naval stores, timber amounting to a total value of 27,021 Engluh pounds. Page 12 Wtol 9 There are several types ot thyme which are grown for ground covers. The caraway thyme, mother of thyme and creeping thyme are included in this group. As a ground cover, thyme forms a thick dense mat of small woolly leaves no more than two to three inches high. Mother ofthyme will withstand more foot traffic than the other varieties. Thymus vulgaris is the species usually grown for seasoning. It is semi-woody, shrubby and grows to a height of six to ten inches. The silver and lemon thyme are also shrubby perennials grown for their fragrant leaves. Thyme is often used in cooking, usually in association with bay leaves. Few recipes call for one without the other. Specific dishes that are improved by thyme's flavor include beef, chicken, tomatoes, beans and onions. Valera Jessee Georgia Peanut (Continued From Page 1) and some of the nation's top research personnel are involved in solving production and processing problems. This valuable information is then carried to the growers and industry personnel by the Cooperative Extension Service through educational materials and personal contacts. Our state's growers and processors apply the latest research findings and recommended practices to produce and process a high quality product. Agribusiness aides our industry by supplying fuel, pesticides, fertilizer, machinery and sufficient labor to produce record crops and a variety of high-quality products. Finally, our state's peanut buyers, warehousemen, shelters, brokers and manufacturers purchase and process peanut foods for a nation and world of protein-hungry people. The Commission is a non-profit organization and our only return comes in the form of helping our growers produce a nutritious, delicious and economical food supply for a hungry world. Nat'1 Tractor Pull Georgia Nationals Tractor Pull, sponsored by the Unadilla Jaycees, will be held on February 21, 22, and 23 at the Middle Georgia Raceway, Byron. For information call 912/627-3236. THE MARKET BULLETIN Irvin Protests Gardening Plants (Continued From Page 1) problems, Irvin said industrial gas users in the Gainesville, Ga. area will not receive additional gas until April 15. Irvin said this immediate cut-off without warning as a result of the curtailment order issued by Transcontinental Pipeline has created tremendous difficulties for poultry processors as well as other food processing companies in the Gainesville area. Pointing to the President's assurance that agriculture and agribusiness would receive sufficient gas supplies for adequate food production, Irvin suggested that the decision making processes resulting from the cut-off of fuel for agribusiness be reviewed and that corrections be implemented wherever necessary. A National Champ (Continued From Page 1) Wesley kept detailed records of expenses and dates and applications of fertilizer and insecticides. He did everything by the book and according to schedule. But Mother Nature didn't cooperate. "The beans had too much rain and not enough sunshine," Wesley complained. "I was lookin' for 200 bushels and I only got 47. The amazin' thing about it was, the year before last we got 376 bushels on an acre-and-a-half." Careful entries in his records indicate that Wesley spent $197.20 for seed, fertilizer, labor and equipment, while he grossed only $204.50. Having submitted his crop records to the Young America Horticulture Contest early in October, Wesley said he had given up hopes of even placing in the national contest. "I thought I'd been dropped out and didn't think anymore about it." Then on Christmas Eve a letter came. "When I opened it and read the first line, I started hollerin'," Wesley explained. "My Mama, she was half stunned. First thing she did was grab the phone." A sixth grader at South Rabun Elementary School, Wesley plays trombone in the beginner bana and holds down center position on the Tiger basketball team. What did he learn about farming after a summer's hard work for a menial $15? "The important thing I learned is that a farmer doesn't always make a big profit," he answered quickly. "But you can't let that disturb you. Like me I'm already making plans for next year's bean patch." Go. Agribusiness Council Meeting The annual Georgia Agribusiness: Council meeting will be held February 20-21 at the Macon Hilton, Macon. Reservations should be made through the Georgia Agribusiness Council, 19 Hunter St., SW, Atlanta 30334. HOW TO HAMMER Before you hammer a nail into the wall, make a small patch over the spot with cellophane tape. This keeps wall material from cracking. (Continued From Page 1) will repel cucumber beetles. Datura - (jimson weed, barnyard jasmine, angel's trumpets, etc.) has been observed to protect nearby plants from Japanese beetles. All parts of this plant are poisonous to livestock and humans. Dill - good addition to the vegetable garden but it should not be sown near carrots or tomatoes as it has a suppressing effect on them. Eggplant - to protect eggplant from Colorado potato beetle, plant it among green beans. African Marigolds - excretes a substance from its roots which kills soil nematodes. Marigolds planted between tomato plants will produce better plants bearing more fruit. The odor of the foliage is an effective insect repellent. Marigolds have also successfully been used in bean rows to repel the Mexican bean beetle. Garlic - onions and shallots inhibit the growth of peas and beans but are beneficial in the control of aphis. Herbs - all vegetables are aided by the most aromatic herbs, i.e. borage, lavender, hyssop, sage, parsley, chervil, tarragon, chives, thyme, marjoram, dill, camomile and lovage. Mint - repels black flea beetles, also helps repel cabbage worm butterflies. Mosquitoes - castor bean plants help repel mosquitoes. Plant castor beans near porch or patio to cut down on mosquitoes - also provides pleasant shade. Note: castor beans are toxic to livestock and humans. Nasturtiums - repel squash bugs. When placed under apple trees will keep away woolly aphis, also aids radishes. Parsley - good for tomatoes. Potatoes - rows of potatoes repel the Mexican bean beetle while rows of green beans (not limas) will keep away the Colorado potato beetle. Pumpkins - do well with corn but do not like potatoes. Rabbits - discouraged from entering gardens surrounded by a border of onions. Roses - and garlic are mutually helpful. Roses grown with onions and garlic produce a stronger perfume. Onions also repel rose bugs. Roses are also aided by the presence of parsley. They do not like boxwoods which have outspreading roots that interfere with the roots of the rose bush. Sage - grown among cabbage will protect it from the cabbage butterfly, also helps make the cabbage tender. Strawberries - favorite companion plants are bush beans, lettuce, spinach, and especially borage. Strawberries dislike cabbage. Tansy - planted beside peachtrees will keep away harmful flying insects and eliminates ants from the garden. Turnips - grown with peas, mutually beneficial. Yarrow - increases the aromatic quality of all herbs in the garden, helps most vegetables. MANY COTTON USES There are more than 10,000 uses for cotton.
