Tommy Irvin and the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN staff Page 2 y Itttm ii Dear Editor: My Mother and Dad have been receiving the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN for many years before I was even born. I am handicapped and never could go to school. It seemed that I never could learn enough when I was a child so I would read all my books and by Wednesday would be waiting for the "Market Bulletin". I used it for a reader and math book and a map of Georgia. I put down the box numbers and phone numbers for math. I learned to spell and pronounce many names and places that otherwise I may not have. So I am very thankful for the "Market Bulletin" and I was wondering if any of the other readers ever thought of using the Bulletin for any other uses except for the wonderful paper it is. I am now 28 years old and have thought many times through the years of writing the Bulletin of how it provided the biggest part of my education. Evelyn Brock (Editor's note: This is one of the nicest Christmas gifts that the MARKET BULLETIN staff has ever received. Thank you Miss Brock for writing.) While other ferns are sleeping, the Christmas fern is at its best with lustrous fresh evergreen fronds. In Georgia it is one of the most common ferns in the northern half of the state and can be found without too much trouble in the southern half. In the spring the silvery grayhaired fiddleheads are most prominent. Usually last year's fronds have to be trimmed to allow for the new growth and prevent the fern from becoming unsightly. The snipping can be done as early in spring as desired with no harm to the plant. Although usually smaller, the Christmas fern can reach a height of two or more feet. The spiny- toothed, holly-like leaflets, and especially the availability of greenery this time of year, make the Christmas fern one of the South's most popular yuletime decorations. . Valera Jessee Plant A Tree For Family Fun During the coming year, many projects will be sponsored commemorating the nation's two hundredth birthday. Families can also do projects which will provide fun for everyone. One of these is planting a native tree around the home. After all, trees are just about the only living things native to America that have a live span of 200 years or more. Ga.'s Corn Champion A. D. Garner, farm manager for the Georgia Baptist Children's Home near Baxley, is the 1975 Georgia corn production champion. Garner, manager of the Home farm for 23 years, produced 235.8 bushels of corn per acre on 17 acres. B. D. Whitfield, Jr., Emanuel county, produced 226.2 bushels per acre and Ben Overstreet, Dawsonville, produced 208 bushels per acre. Pictured above are the newly elected 1976 officers and board of directors of the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association. From left to right: Bud Williams, Pres., Derrelle Pridgen 1st. Vice Pres., Bill Webb, Treas., Gene Sutherland, 2nd Vice Pres., and Charles Tatum, Board Chairman; Board members, back row, Joe Cemiglia Jr., Dean Adams, Phil Smith, Wes Blitchington, Sam Cefalu, and Gabe Thomas, Secty. Not pictured, Board Members Bill Reagin and Charles Rose. These officers were installed at the annual meeting held recently. Ga. 4-H'ers Second In Livestock Judging STRAIGHT LINE Georgia's 4-H livestock judging team placed second in the National 4-H Livestock Judging contest held in Louisville, Kentucky v recently. This is the highest placing for a Georgia team in many years. Team members, all from Bulloch county, are: Cheryl Van Deusen, Charles Gay and Pam Deal from Statesboro and Kent Scott of Brookley. Livestock judging tests the youngsters' ability to recognize certain traits that make one animal superior to the other in grade of meat, genetic qualities and physical appearance. The 4-H'ers must give both oral and written reasons for each ranking. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was presented a Blue Ribbon for "Commissioner of Agriculture" award by Susan Sikes, Miss Gwinnett County of 1975. Please identify this. W. J., Albany It is part of the Ginkgo tree, sometimes called maidenhair trees. The female tree produces a foul smelling fruit. Most of the nurseries selling the Gingko tree are selling the male tree. *** What is wild cucumber bark? What is a lard box? Can you tell me if you know of a shrub called magnolia fuscata? It has yellow blossoms early in the spring before the leaves come out and smells like bananas. Mrs. O. L., Pleasanton, Kansas ...Cucumber bark comes from the tree known as the Magnolia acuminata. A lard box is simply that, a box hi which lard is sold. Many of our advertisers use these containers for shipping their orders. The plant you described is hi the magnolia family as well and is called the Michelia fuscata. The common name is banana shrub. *** What is the best way to cut back weeds and control wild berry plants? When is the best time to prune fruit trees? Where can I get plans for cattle gates? F. F., Marietta You should see your county agent with all these problems. He will be able to provide information and advice to h*elp* y* ou. I have been told by several people that the dairies are using powdered milk in their output. Is this so? If it is, why isn't anyone told? Mrs. H. D., Savannah Well, it would cost him [dairyman] a pretty penny to add powdered milk. It is also illegal to make milk from powdered milk in Georgia. However, powdered milk may be added to skim, lowfat and lowfat chocolate milk which is often done in order to make it have more body and not taste quite so watery. When powdered milk is added, the product is usually called "Protein Fortified". Make Snack Time Fun and Nutritious Make snack and lunch time fun and nutritious for kids. Active children need extra energy for play. Good foods to include in those precious lunch boxes or bags are: Dried fruits such as raisins, apples, pears, peaches, dates, etc. Fresh fruit slices such as pears, oranges, apples, etc. Spread peanut butter on apple slices or on crackers. Raw vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, celery, etc. Stuff celery sticks with peanut butter, cheese spreads or mayonnaise. Roasted nuts and seeds such as pecans, peanuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, etc. Safe Driving Urged G. M. Kirk, who has devoted 45 years to motor safety in Georgia, urges all drivers to be especially careful during the holiday season. Those planning trips should be especially careful and, if possible, plan driving during daylight hours. When the old diary barn complex at the University of Georgia became available for use, the Georgia Poultry Federation created a committee and through contributions of firms in the poultry industry and allied fields renovated the building. The new Extension Poultry Four Towers Building will be used for rapid, short term investigations directly related to production problems in the poultry industry. Left to right are: Abit Massey, Gainesville, Executive Director, Georgia Poultry Federation; Dr. O. W. Charles, Athens, Extension Poultry Scientist; Lee Arrendale, Clarkesville, President, Georgia Poultry Federation; Dr. John Shutze, Athens, Head, Extension Poultry Science Department; and Dr. Charles Ellington, Athens, Director, Cooperative Extension Service.
