FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Volume 61 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, November 19, 1975 Number 48 CM* A Beware Fantastic Eggs, Grits Pesticide Offers Red-Eye Gravy What better way to compliment a breakfast of eggs and grits than by adding the main course of either bacon, sausage or country ham with red-eye gravy? None. . .and the chances are good that somewhere along the way a Hampshire hog is involved. Georgia Hampshire Breeders, which ranked sixth in the nation during June (latest figure available) for recordings are doing all they can to breed the type hog that packers and consumers seek... lean meat, little fat, plenty of muscling and a large tasty loin-eye. Georgia breeders have spared no expense in acquiring breeding stock (one breeder has a $10,000.00 boar in his herd) that performs. This is (Our guest columnist this week is Charles W. Atwill, Secretary, Georgia Hampshire Breeders Association, P. 0. Box 491, Eastman 31023.)_______________ evidenced by the latest figures from the Georgia Boar Test Station in Tifton. The thirteen boars that successfully completed the test reached 240 pounds of weight in an average of 153 days, had an average daily gain of 2.04 pounds, put on one pound of meat for each 2.58 pounds of feed consumed and had an average backfat probe of .86 inches. These are figures that are important to both a breeder and the commercial swine producers for these genetic traits are passed to their offspring. A swine producer can now buy "performance tested" breeding stock and expect his own production to pretty well follow suit. Certainly the producer that knows how fast his hogs will grow, and how little feed it will take to get one to market is far ahead of those who are still eye-balling their selections. At the University of Georgia Boar Test Sale in Athens in July a Hampshire boar was the top-selling over all breed, and at the Tifton Station the Hamp boars averaged $506.00. This is good evidence of popularity and demand. The Boars can't dp the job alone but he will carry his share of the (Continued On Page 8) From Out-Of-State Georgia farmers and consumers are urged to beware the "fantas- tic" or "too good to be true" offers on the purchase of pesticides. Many people continue to receive offers, usually via the telephone, of unbelievable discounts, guns, or television sets if they will purchase certain pesticides. The offers generally come from out of state companies who call at night or on the week-end. Often- times the product is registered, but the phone claims are not consistent with the label claims when the material arrives. The purchaser may then find that the label ac- tually prohibits the use for which it was purchased. Most of the products are ready On their way to your Thanksgiving table to use and when compared to the concentrates which are available These Georgia turkeys raised in North Georgia, offer good, economical and traditional fare for your families Thanksgiving dinner. ' Buy Coal-Firewood Gamma irradiation could be a potent weapon in the battle to keep By Standard Measure the bugs out of stored grain products like wheat, corn and rice. Of potential commercial im- portance, it would also avoid the 1 problem of undesirable residues Coal Firewood from chemicals used to treat in- fested grain. Researchers at the laboratory applied irradiation at e_ach life stage of the beetle Sitophagus hololeptoides, a species that infests a variety of stored agricultural commodities. All stages eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults were subjected to seven radiation doses administered in "a Cobalt-60 irradiator at 1.9 krad per minute. A krad, or kilorad, is a measure of the amount of energy absorbed per unit weight. Researchers noted that although low levels of irradiation did not prevent egg hatch, the insects were damaged severely, sufficiently enough to prevent the development of adults. No mature larvae exposed to The Department of Agriculture has received reports that dealers are selling coal and coke by weights not certified by the Certified Public Weighers Act. This is against the law and constitutes a misdemeanor. Coal and coke must be sold by standard weights. As a dry measure commodity, they should be sold by the bushel which has an established weight of 80 pounds or multiples thereof, or in sub-multiples such as one-half bushel, onefourth, etc. The reasoning behind these standard weights is that a bag of coal in one place could weigh as much as 80 to 84 pounds while in another it might contain only 60 There have been increases in sales of firewood in Georgia with irregular terms used to describe a load-such as "half pick-up load", "U-haul load", "good pick-up load", "wide-bed pick-up", etc. The customary and accepted term to describe a load of wood is a cord which contains 128 cubic feet. Another unit of measure which is employed in the pulpwood industry identifies the term "unit" as 7,0222 pounds of wood. This is 168 cubic feet and is slightly larger than a cord. Buying by the cord or unit is, therefore the surest way to know how much you are getting. The majority of the sales of firewood come within the provisions of the Georgia Weights and (Continued On Page 8) pounds. Measures Regulations of 1973. Northern Maidenhair There are three varieties of maidenhair fern common to Georgia: (1) northern maidenhair (Adiantum pedatum), primarily found north of Atlanta; (2) southern maidenhair (A. capillus-veneris), located mainly in the southwestern part of Georgia, and (3) delta maidenhair (A. cuneatum), available in florist shops and greenhouses throughout the state. A. pedatum is the most common maidenhair fern. You can find it growing in moist woodlands anywhere in the United States.- The mountains, shady valleys, and rich riverbanks of North Georgia provide the perfect home for the delicate fern in our state. Characteristically the fern is 10 to 20 inches tall. It is very sensitive to cold and will be killed by the first frost but will be back again next spring. The southern maidenhair fern is native to warmer parts of the U.S. In Georgia its habitat is more restricted than its northern relative but it can be found on wet limestone rocks just about anywhere. The 10-15 inch fronds of the southern maidenhair droop ever so delicately. For this reason many botanists regard this fern as one of the most beautiful ferns in Georgia. The delta maidenhair is included in this column because it is one of the most popular indoor houseplants. It is a native of Brazil and con- sequently could not survive our winters, even in south Georgia. For indoor fern beauty, keep this fern in partial shade with temperatures no less than 55 F. Valera Jessee Sweet Potatoes Need Certificate All sweet potatoes moved to Florida or Alabama need a certificate from the Georgia Department of Agriculture certifying freedom from the sweet potato weevil. These may be obtained from the Entomology Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture or our Entomology Office at Tifton. All trucks are checked at the Florida truck weighing stations. THE MARKET BULLETIN Red-eye Gravy Research Program (Continued From Page 1) load when properly mated. Hampshire sows are broody: long, tall, have a large capacity for carrying those big litters and are endowed with a milking ability second to none. This is what is necessary to wean large litters and is the difference between success and failure. The boars and gilts will cross well with any other breed. This makes it easy for the commercial man to put together a herd that works best for him. With Hampshire breeders reaching from Tennessee to Florida, Alabama to South Carolina, quality breeding stock is readily available to the swine producer and the Georgia Hampshire breeder is readily available to help his customer produce "America's most profitable market-topping meat breed". Yep . . . Hampshires are definitely a big factor in tasty meals and Georgia's $176,000,000 swine industry. (Continued From Page 1) treatment pupated successfully. Untreated adults may live for several months. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves a level of 20 to 50 krad for the control of all stored-product insects in wheat and wheat flour. Research entomologist John H. Brower, at the Savannah laboratory, found the minimum legally allowable dose 20 to 25 krad to be effective in radiation disinfestation to control S. hololeptoides. "Even 10 to 15 krad may be adequate for this species," Dr. Brower concluded. Commercial application of gamma irradiation for controlling stored-product insects might be feasible if radiation facilities were incorporated into the construction of large grain handling facilities such as ports or terminals a possibility for the future. Straight Line I have about 10 bushels of black walnuts that are hulled. How do I sell them? H.P., Ft. Oglethorpe They are presently selling for $5 to $5.50 per bushel at the Atlanta Farmers Market. However, prices could change. A bushel of walnuts weighs 50 pounds, a peck 12 1/2 pounds and a gallon 6 1/4 pounds. **** Do you love me like I love You? O.K., I bring my troubles to you anyway. Brown mushrooms. Stinky! They are super abundant on my neglected yard. I pull 'em up by the bucketfull and throw 'em away. They come again. I am 79 years old and can't dig, prune, mow, etc. They nasty! A.D., Thomson Yes, we love you. You have Stinkhorn Fungus. Use Captan or Fermate for control. Wet weather makes 'em worse. May we suggest you also contact your county agent for assistance. My chickens' tail feathers have come out. I know they are suppose to molt but two years are ridiculous. They look awful, running around uncovered. And, their laying just *ai*n't* w* hat it used to be. L. R., Roopville What you have is cannibalism, usually caused by overcrowding. Your county agent can help you there. The only way to prevent cannibalism is to debeak at age one day to 10 days of age. There is no cure for can- nibalism once it gets started. There are several reasons your laying has dropped; age, stress, insects, weather conditions, etc. Ask your county agent for assistance. **** Are wild Elderberries poisonous? Are they suitable for making wine? C.M., Atlanta We have been advised that the fruit and flowers are edible. The bark, leaves, buds, shoots and roots are poisonous. There is a rumor that the berries have been used for making wine but we wouldn't know anything about that. I would like to move some buck eye trees or grow some new ones. Will the buck eye grow into a tree or can they be rooted? Do they need more than one tree to produce and during what season do they usually grow? Are they poisonous? J.W., Milledgeville They are usually grown from seed and do not require cross-pollination. They start producing when they are a small tree and shed their leaves in the fall. The nuts are shed about the same time as pecans and hickory nuts. The plant is poisonous to animals. The buckeye is poisonous to humans but not to squirrels.
