FARMERS & CONSUMERS Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Market Bulletin FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Volume 61 Wednesday, August 6, 1975 Number 33 Egg Industry irvin Requests Reduction Of Tobacco Quotas Big Business Eggs, like every other product from the farm, must be produced in sufficient quantity to make the venture profitable. They must also be moved into the channels of trade, arriving eventually at the consumers' table meeting the highest standards of quality. The egg industry is big business and in this day and time, regard- less of how large ;a producer one (happens to be, Jit. takes joint feffort on the | part of egg profducers to get the |top dollar for Jtheir product. Back in the mid i!960's, egg prodcers across the southeast were having marketing problems. They were, for the most part, selling independently. Nearby markets usually brought the best price, but what happened to (Our guest columnist this week is Joe Hamby, General Manager of National Egg Company, 1200 No. Buford Highway, Norcross 30071.) those eggs left over after local demand had been filled? They were shipped to the northeast or other parts of the country, often at a salvage price or too frequently below producer's cost. "Necessity is the mother of invention" and that's what brought together a group of egg industry leaders who on July 1, 1966 formed theNATIONAL EGG COMPANY. The major overall objective of the cooperative is "to assist the producer to receive for his product the top price, consistent with supply and demand." NATIONAL EGG'S operations can be described in four specific areas: communications, marketing of eggs and fowl, cooperative purchasing, and promotion and research. We try to keep our members totally informed so that the usual 'feast or famine' cycles of our industry can be balanced in order for the consuming public to receive top quality eggs on a consistent basis without having to pay the extremely high prices for eggs when our industry is under-producing. NATIONAL EGG works with several egg breaking plants in supplying them .with members' undergrade eggs and surplus breaking stock. Under its marketing program, (Continued On Page 8) Tobacco buyers bid on Georgia's gold leaf in Statesboro as the 1975 marketing season hits its peak. Notice the buyers raising their hands to bid. Eyes, hands and even facial expressions are used in bidding for tobacco. Mule Day Coming The Third Annual Salute to the Mule Day will be held at Gold Hills, U.S. Highway 60, Dahlonega, on Saturday, August 16. All those wishing to enter the various mule competitions may do so by contacting Gold Hills, Box 487, Dahlonega 30533. Awards will be presented to the winners of mules entering pulling contests, barrel races, one mile races, beauty contests and others. Georgia Mountain Fair Beginning Aug. 1, folks from all over have been helping the little mountain town of Hiawassee, celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Georgia Mountain Fair, August 1-9. Tractor, Auto Contest Winners Winners have been named in the 4H auto and tractor driving and small engine demonstration competition held recently in Macon. Russ Montgomery, Taylor county, won in the tractor driving competition; Lee Minish, Jackson county, and Ricky Maddox, Bleckley county, won in auto driving. Mark Ballentine, Floyd county, won in the small engine demonstration. Ninety-three Georgia youngsters entered the contest. In the tractor event, 4-H'ers had to maneuver a tractor and trailer through an obstacle course and take a written test. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has called for an immediate reduction in 1976 flue cured tobacco quotas to help bolster this year's lagging leaf prices. In a telegram to Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, Irvin said an announcement by Butz that he intended to reduce quotas next year could have a favorable influence on this season's prices. Pointing out that during the first 1 1 days of this selling season Georgia tobacco has averaged $2.99 per hundred pounds less than during the first 11 selling days of 1974, the Commissioner blamed the problem, at least in part, on Butz's 15% increase in tobacco quotas this year. "Last fall federal officials and buying companies toured tobacco areas, including Georgia, contending an increase in quotas was needed to meet U.S. and foreign demand and that growers could expect a satisfactory return if they increased production," Irvin said. "Although Georgia is not producing a 15% increase over last year's crop, more northern growing areas have increased overall production and this may be creating an anticipated over supply, resulting in lower prices," the Commissioner added. Irvin urged extreme caution last fall when USDA first proposed the quota increase. Pointing to world economic problems he suggested a quota increase might jeopardize export markets and said the tobacco industry should not be used as an "expandable pawn" in an attempt to obtain a rhore favorable world trade balance. America's Native Handicraft-The Quilt "Crazy Quilt" 200 years ago American women were piecing together remnants of cloth from anything they could find. As our trade with Europe diminished and we were forced to make do with what we had, fabric became an even more precious commodity. The "Hit and Miss" quilt and the "Crazy" quilt "Stripe" "American Pride" "Cross and Crown" 'represented efforts to stretch every piece of material as far as it would go- In an effort to give some arrangement to these quilts, the "Stripe" quilt was devised making use of every piece of fabric that could be cut in a one inch by three inch strip. One of the first intricately pieced patterned quilts of our country was the "American Pride" quilt, an adaptation of a French design. Another popular design during the birth of our nation was the "Cross and the Crown" quilt. Religion, patriotism and ingenuity all reflected in America's native handi- craft, the patchwork quilt. Page 2 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, August 6, 1975 Dear Editor: The best way I have found to keep rabbits out of the garden is to bury a bottle leaving about two inches exposed. Rake dirt up to the top of the bottle to hold it steady. When the wind blows the sound of the "hoot" will keep the rabbits from coming in your garden. Mrs. Otis E. Page 8 Cteepuoj Creeping Jenny such a cute lit- tle name for this summer weed. You might think differently, however, if it invades your lawn or pasture. The flower looks like a wild mor- ning glory which it is often called. It is also called corn-lily, withwind, bellbine, lap-love, green vine, hedge bells and bindweed. You'll find this vine Tying flat on the ground, flowering all along its stem. If you run over it with the lawnmower or plow it up with the tractor you will be interested to know that you haven't eliminated the problem only spread it out. When the rootstalks are torn and scattered, every fragment will start a new colony. America wasn't born with creep- ing jenny. We have our relations in Europe to thank for inflicting this weed on us. To be sure, it was unin- tentional because they didn't like it in the old country either. We haven't discovered any hid- den value to this prolific vine. Perhaps, though, its purpose is sim- ply to make roadsides, ditches and other forgotten places a little pret- tier with its morning-glory-like blooms. Vg|era Jessee Garden Rabbits Thank's for the heavenly beans from Belcher's garden greens, I'm so glad you sowed 'em, and Ma Nature growed 'em Cause we tilled, hoed, and planted, and just took for granted that whatever we sow, we reap, but somethin' happened while asleep. -----1 wish those darned rabbits didn't have such bad habits, and anymore that happen to hatch will stay in Mrs. Wiggs' Cabbage Patch. By Nonny-muss (Mrs. T. J. Beeler) TURKEY ROLLS ROLL According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, popularity of turkey rolls and roasts is growing by leaps and bounds. Back in the early 1960's, eight million pounds of turkey went into rolls and roasts. But, in 1972, the figure rose to over 250 million pounds. U.S. 1-3 52.86 Egg Industry (Continued From Page 1) NECO knows if there is a surplus of eggs building after they have collected inventory information from members. NATIONAL EGG COMPANY is employing the cooperative purchase program for its members on many of their supplies that would give them the advantage of volume buying. We are working very closely with our State Egg Commissions and egg associations, and with American Egg Board in promoting eggs throughout our sixteen-state area. We are pleased that with the advent of Egg Central, we in the southeast are enjoying higher egg consumption per capita than in any other area in the United States. In the area of research, we have been working with the North Carolina State University in developing new products from spent fowl to be introduced at the consumer level. NATIONAL EGG COMPANY is a marketing cooperative made up of solely egg producers throughout sixteen southeastern states. It is a member of the United Egg Producers which is a federation of cooperatives. NECO is one of five regional members that make up the United Egg Producers. United Egg Producers is active in government relations, such as the well known HR 12000 egg checkoff legislation, and statistical information. NECO is also a member of Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association and the Poultry and Egg Institute of America. Some 3,500 egg producers ip Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Missouri and 500 producers scattered over ten other southeastern states are members of NATIONAL EGG COMPANY. I believe I can safely state that NATIONAL EGG COMPANY was brought into existence primarily due to the forward thinking, financial support and moral backing from the producer leaders in Georgia. Without the help and support from 'Georgia producers National Egg Company today might still be a dream, but, instead it is a viable, working cooperative that gives direct benefits to its producer-members. We are fortunate to have the support and participation of the many producers in Georgia and our other 15 state area, and we welcome at' anytime the opportunity to be of service to every producer. Watermelons Are Summer Favorite Watermelons are a universally popular summer dish. Watermelon offers a good source of vitamin A and a fair source of Calcium and vitamin C and is low in calories. The sweet flesh is high in water content; therefore, when chilled it can be a real thirst quencher. Watermelon can add color, variety, and flavor to salads, fruit cups, punch bowls, and sherberts. The rind can be used to make excellent preserves and pickles. When choosing a melon, look for a symmetrical shape and good color. A ripe melon will have a velvety bloom rather than a shiny surface. Thumping should produce a good hollow sound. Ripe fruit should be stored in a cool place, then chilled just before serving. Wednesday. August 6, 1975 Agrieultural .
