FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Volume 61 LuwL Research Vital To Entomology Anyone who has ever planted a garden, vacationed in an area plagued with mosquitos or deerflies or had a cockroach peek out at him knows how important insects can be to his health and comfort. What he may not fully appreciate, however, is the great debt he owes to insects as experimental animals in basic research studies on inheritance, cell structure and function, cell reproduction and development, nerve impulse transmission, hormone effects, sensory perception, digestion, nutrition, tumor development and many other topics of great personal significance to many people suffering from various biological defects. Insects are animals, just as are birds, fish, guinea pigs and peo- ple. There are very few, if any, essential differences in the basic biological processes of insects and the higher ani[mals. Insects, however, have two attributes that make them superior experimental organisms. They are just small enough and they are just large enough. They are small enough to be reared easily and cheaply in suf- (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Horace O. Lund, Professor and former Department Head, University of Georgia Department of Entomology, Athens 30602.)______ ficient numbers to yield statistically significant experimental results. They can be handled in small cages and conveniently subjected to various conditions of light, moisture, heat, radiation, chemical vapors, etc. But, they are large enough to be operated upon surgically under the microscope for the removal or implantation of vital organs or cells. They can be studied alive with the naked eye or under a low-power lens. Insects can be injected or surfacetreated or fed precisely measured amounts of toxins, hormones, vitamins or other chemicals and their organ systems or whole-organism behavior subsequently studied to determine the effects of the various treatments. Workers doing imaginative basic research in any of the biological sciences risk the loss of support if their experiments do not promise to (Continued On Page 8) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, May 28, 1975 Number 22 Screwworms More ^ffity In Spring Springtime can bring more than flowers to southeastern farmers, if they are not careful. Screwworms, which traditionally increase in numbers along the U.S.Mexico border during the spring and fall months, are more likely to find their way into southeastern livestock now that spring has arrived. The danger is particularly great this year due to the ongoing drought in southern Texas and the resulting increase in traditional livestock movements out of that area. The drought-related animal movements correspond to the annual spring build-up in screwworm cases, all of which could spell trouble for southeastern farmers. Screwworms, the larvae of the screwworm fly, feed on the living flesh in wounds of all warm-blooded animals, including man. If left untreated, screwworm infestations can kill. Farmers are urged to check animals carefully for possible infestation. Any suspicious larvae should be submitted to the Georgia Department of Agriculture brucellosis lab for identification. Peanut Committee Appoints Members Members and their alternates have been appointed to serve on the Peanut Administrative Committee by the U.S.D.A. The 18-member committee, consisting of nine producers and nine handlers, recommends regulations to apply under the federal peanut marketing agreement. The program provides quality control of peanuts to ensure that only wholesome peanuts are allowed into edible outlets. Newly selected members from Georgia who will serve through April 30, 1978, are: producers H. Emmett Reynolds, Arabi; Billy Newberry, Arlington; and handler G. C. Davis, Arlington. Peanuts Remain Number 1 Crop The Georgia Crop Improvement Association field inspected and ap- ?roved for certification in 1974 over 8,000 acres of peanuts. From this production the Association has tagged over 900,000 bags of certified peanut seed. According to the official laboratory reports the germination on peanuts is well above average this year. Over 95% of the lots germinated above the minimum standards, with many lots germinating in the high eighties and low nineties. Pictured is the winner of the Georgia Chicken Cooking Contest with two of the judges and officials. From left to right; Lee Arrendale, President, Georgia Poultry Federation; Mrs. Dorene Sudweeks, Griffin, winner of the Cook-off; Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin; Ms. Grace Hartley, Food Editor, ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION Sunday Magazine; and Durward Key, last year's winner. Chill Chicken Wins First In State Cooking Contest What does it take to win the Georgia Chicken Cooking Contest? An original, tasty, easy to cook chicken recipe and persistance. Tobacco Meeting To Discuss Dates A Flue-Cured Tobacco Advisory Committee meeting will be held in Raleigh, N.C., May 29. The committee will discuss opening dates and selling schedules for flue-cured tobacco to be sold in each market and marketing area during the 1975 season. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 1 p.m. at the FlueCured Tobacco Stabilization Corporation Building , 522 Fayetteville St., Raleigh. For further information contact J.W. York, Tobacco Division, Agricultural Marketing Service, Rm. 502 Annex, USDA, Washington, D.C. 20250. Phone (202) 447-2567. Avoid Tragedy Store Poisons Spring and summer gardening means more insecticides, pesticides and weed killers. People with children should store and lock up all toxic substances out of their reach. Tragic accidental poisoning could be the result of storing household and garden products underneath the kitchen sink or in an open shed. Child-resistant packaging should be bought when available. Mrs. Dorene Sudweeks of Griffin was a finalist in last year's contest and this year's first place winner. Her unique concoction of Chili-Chicken won her a trip to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the National Cook-off in July. The Georgia cook-off was held May 16*at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta. Competing for the top honor were Mrs. Mildred Burress, Atlanta, 1st runner-up (Simply Grand Stuffed Breasts), Wanda Messina, Jonesboro (Chicken Surprise), Mrs. Malbea Ann Heilman, Atlanta (LeChick's Lucious Livers), Mrs. John Phillips, Cochran (Oriental Chicken), and Mr. (Continued On Page 8) Survey Being Mode Of Ga. Muscadines How many acres of muscadines does Georgia have? The Georgia Muscadine Association is taking a survey of actual acres. Anyone engaged in growing muscadines is urged to write and give acres he or she has to Bill Ison, President, Georgia Muscadine Association, Brooks 30205. Also, anyone growing muscadines who is interested in joining the Association should write Aubrey Owens, Gay 30218. Page 2 we letteu Dear Editor: I have noticed in almost every issue of the MARKET BULLETIN for several years now that some of the advertisers advertise rabbits as "Smut Nose" and it has finally come to my attention that maybe I should try to help those advertisers as well as the general public to become educated to the fact that there is absolutely no breed of rabbits by the name of "Smut Nose." These advertisers are to a great extent unaware of the rabbits beyond a doubt. The Californian rabbit has black or dark markings whereby the nose, ears, feet and tail, etc. are colored while the remainder of the rabbit is snow white. Since those markings are so strong a cross between the New Zealand White and Californians will throw a mixed Californian in color leaving the colored markings on the white. So the so-called "Smut Nose" is either a Californian or a cross between the New Zealand White. Or it could be a Himalayan or a Himalayan Cross since the Californian was developed from the Himalayan, Chinchilla, and NZW. R. Page 8 Pokeweed is the Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde of the plant world. Sometimes it's good; sometimes it's bad. It can nourish you or make you violently ill. Although it does have a split personality it is more predictable than most schizos. When you know what to look for there is little danger involved but if you munch pokeweed indiscrimently, your digestive system will suffer the consequences. When pokeweed "pokes" through the ground in early spring it is a delicious, very nutritious, vegetable tasting similar to spinach. Gather pokeweed shoots when they are no more than eight inches tall. Look for the old dried stalks from last year to find the new tender shoots. Wash and trim shoots. Boil for 10 minutes in plenty of water; throw first water away and boil again in just a little water with salt and bacon drippings. Simmer slowly for half hour and enjoy. The tender shoots and leaves are the only parts of the plant that are edible. The huge fibrous root has white succulent flesh and looks most tantalizing but it's a devil in disguise. The root which can be as large as a man's forearm is very poisonous when consumed. As pokeweed matures, its personality changes. Instead of a tender, sweet young thing, it becomes a beautifully dangerous attraction. The stalks change from spring green to passionate purple; and the innocent whitish-green flowers give way to long clusters of purple-black berries. Although pokeweed is no longer edible at this stage, there are other uses. For instance, the reddishpurple juice derived from the berries has been used by school children as an ink substitute. Birds search out the poke berries to give them strength on their fall migrations and the juice extract has been used to make food THE MARKET BULLETIN LIFE CYCLE OF THE FUSIFORM RUSf FUN6US (Cronartium fusiforme) SPORES FROM (ANKER .INFECT OAK LEAVES CANKER ON TREE .PRODUCING SPORES^ ENLAD6EO POKTWN LINDERSOE OMC LAF SHOWING TEUAL STAGE SPORES GERMINATING ON NEEDLES AND EXTENDING TO SEEDLING STEM Cronartium fusiforme attacks particularly slash and loblolly pine. INFECTS NEEDLK IN CROWN AND BfiANCHES BROOMED SEEDLING4 YEARS LATER INFECTED SEEDLING 6 MONTHS LATBR Fusiform rust, easily identified by the orange pqwdery material on trunks and limbs of pine trees, has received much attention lately. Due to the many requests we have received for information from our readers, we are reprin ting the life cycle of the fusiform rust fungus. Research Vital Chill (Continued From Page 1) yield results immediately useful to an ailing humanity. The basic researcher in entomology can assure his sponsors that if the information developed in his studies of insects cannot somehow lead to the cure of cancer, circulatory disorders or epilepsy, it will almost certainly be useful sometime to an imaginative applied entomologist in his very important effort to limit the numbers of pest insects. Witness the very recent development of the "sterile male technique" used to eradicate the primary screw worm fly, the use of sex attractants in the control of the gypsy moth and the use of hormonelike chemicals in the control of mosquitoes. Basic research on insects must be actively encouraged and generously supported for the sake of vitally needed general biological information as well as for its more obvious contributions to the reduction in damage by insect pests. It is a giltedged investment in the future health and happiness of all mankind. The Indians taught colonists how to recognize the plant, how to prepare it and enjoy the vegetable. Whether or not they also warned the settlers of the dangers of pokeweed we do not know. Presumably, they found out for themselves. Valera Jessee (Continued From Page 1) Thomas R. Walton, Atlanta (PoliChicken). Extreme caution should be taken when cooking on charcoal grills to prevent painful burn injuries and inhalation of smoke and gases. Gasoline should never be used in place of charcoal lighter fluid. And never reapply charcoal lighter fluid after the fire has started; the flames can ignite the vapors, and travel up to the can causing an explosion. Never use charcoal grills in confined spaces, such as homes, campers or tents, or any other area not properly ventilated. Wednesday, May 28, 1975 FtP Available To Landowners The Forest Incentives Program (FIP), a program designed to increase timber production through tree planting and/or timber stand improvement, is now available to all Georgia landowners. Landowners may sign up for the practices at their local ASCS office. Local county ASCS offices will approve the application, keep records and make payments to the landowner, while the Georgia Forestry Commission will provide the technical forestry field assistance. Those eligible, primarily small landowners, include private individuals, groups, associations, corporations or other legal entities who own nonindustrial private forest lands capable of producing an industrial wood crop. A landowner must have a forest management plan prepared by a forester, under the direction and approval of the Georgia Forestry Commission for the area in which the practice will be carried out. For further information, landowners should contact their local forestry unit or ASCS office.
