The policy is in accord with the objective of the laboratories to make the greatest possible contribution to animal health in the areas served by the laboratories. To alter this policy would reduce the effectiveness that the combined laboratory - practitioner effort has had on animal disease control. This philosophy .was expressed by Dr. Virgil Robinson, a veterinary pathologist with a distinguished record in diagnostic service, in a presentation to a joint meeting of the Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians Association and the U. S. Animal Health Association. "The practicing veterinarian is the logical laboratory contact for many reasons. He has specific scientific (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Frank E. Mitchell, Director, Ga. Department of Agriculture, University Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory, Tifton 31794.) training and experience for the interpretation and immediate application of laboratory results. He can also advise on procedures for protecting neighboring animals in the event of a contagious disease. Good accurate reports to the veterinarian serve as a productive educational medium and benefit the entire community on a long-term basis. If animal owners first consulted a veterinarian, many problems would be solved locally and the needless routine work load of the laboratory would be materially reduced. The veterinary practitioner's assessment of a case often provides key information necessary for directing the laboratory investigation. Laboratory results are often inexact and require interpretation based on circumstances w-hlch only a veterinarian would know are pertinent. The correct choice of several courses of action for treatment and prevention of disease requires the (Continued On Page 12) FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, April 30, 1975 Number 18 Vaccination Clinics Caladium Offer Set Up For Rabies Beauty in the Shade Rabies is on the rise. Last year in Georgia the number of confirmed If you are looking for some colorful plants to wake up a sleepy garden area, cases in animals jumped forty per try caladiums. These plants are notorious for their large, colorful leaves which cent 138 cases compared to 95 the are produced in abundance under proper growing conditions. previous year. To combat the problem rabies vac- cination clinics will take place throughout the state this spring. Rabies is always fatal unless treat- ment is started early. .In fact, in all medical history only one person has survived the disease. Once the symptoms appear, the end is virtually certain insanity, paralysis and death. State laws provide another incentive for attending the clinics. They require rabies vaccination of all dogs. Keep in mind that the treatment is not a one-shot affair. Vacci- nations must be renewed every one to three years, depending on the vac- cine. Although no Georgians died from rabies last year, about 100 underwent anti-rabies treatment. In most cases the disease started in the wild- life population, then spread to dogs and finally to humans. Contact your local health depart- ment for further information. Both tail and low growing Caladium varieties are used to highlight this shaded patio planning. Varieties producing predom- inately white leaves are the most popular followed by those producing combinations of red and green and pink and green leaves. Most important, caladiums are ver- satile landscape plants and can be used to add contrast and color among shrubs in either border or foundation plantings. They offer a tremendous show when one or two varieties are mass planted around a patio or in a walled garden planting area. They are even adaptable for use in containers to highlight a piece of garden statuary or to call attention to an entranceway. Caladiums can be expected to perform best under shaded conditions for this is the type of location in which the leaves color up best. From 40-60 per cent shade is recommended. Varieties can, however, be exposed to full sun for a portion of the day. When exposing caladiums to full sun, choose a location exposed to early morning sun. Varieties with Summer Annuals Well Suited thin leaves often burn when planted in areas receiving hot afternoon sun coupled with drying conditions. For Extra Calves, Yearlings Thicker leaved varieties withstand more exposure to direct sun. This is especially true if they are started in Reports on cattle numbers indicate that many Georgia farmers may be con- cerned about a feed supply for more beef calves and yearlings than in previous years. Summer annuals - millets, sorghum sudan crosses and sudangrasses are well suited for growing calves and yearlings. Good quality slaughter cattle can be produced on summer annuals by adding some grain while grazing or for a feeding period after grazing. Planting of these crops can begin in late spring when soil temperature reach about 60 degrees. Grazing can Foresf Landowner begin four to six weeks after planting. The MARKET BULLETIN is receiving a number of these requests and we feel that we will be getting others in the future. The Round Table honors exceptional service and leadership by poultrymen. Young Georgians Win Recognition Five top young Georgians have proven that hard work pays off. They were recently named as the 1975 4-H state winners. The winners and their areas of work are Garden Summers, Cordele, agricultural achievement; Kathy Ross, Cochran, consumer education; Lynne Andrews, Toccoa, and J. Holliman, Pendergrass, Citizenship Award; and Connie Coley, Cochran, Georgia Wildlife Federation Youth Conservationist of the Year. Peanut Princess Applications for the 1975-76 Peanut Princess contest have been mailed to counties in the peanut belt. Selection of the new princess will be held July 31 at the Rural Development in Tifton. Contact your local Farm Bureau office or the county agent's office for information. 74 Cotton Club Announces winners Growers in four counties have captured top honors in the 1974 Money Maker Cotton Club competition. Competition was in two categories during 1974, skip row and solid. G. R. Woodard of Turner county is state champion for skip-row cotton production. He averaged 1,279 pounds of lint per acre on 18 acres. Lamar Edge and Marion Coppage, Worth county, were state champions with solid planted cotton. They produced 924 pounds of lint on 39.5 acres. Second-and third place winners for skip-row were H. T. Elliott, Worth county and E. E. Elton, Wheeler county, with 1,261 pounds of lint per acre on 120 acres and 1,146 pounds of lint per acre on 40 acres respectively. Second and third place winners for solid planted cotton were D'elmus Johnson, Emanuel county, and R. A. Eavenson, Elbert county, with 913 pounds of lint per acre on 1 7 acres and 909 pounds of lint per acre on 152 acres respectively. Any Georgia cotton farmer who produces 750 pounds of lint per acre on solid or 1,000 pounds per acre on skip-row on an effective farm allotment is eligible for membership in the Money Maker Cotton Club. Details are available at your county agent's office. IMPROVING WITH AGE Sweet potatoes actually improve with age. Their vitamin A,content increases during storage before they reach retail ,>u, res. Soybean Rdvice Nitrogen Fertilization Doesn't Pay: A soybean crop yielding 50 bu/acre will accumulate about 250 pounds of nitrogen. Since yields Sre related to nitrogen accumulation, there has been some interest in applying fertilizer nitrogen to soybeans. However, practically all field studies indicate that nitrogen fertilization of soybeans do not increase yields when they are grown under conditions favorable for symbiotic nitrogen fixation. The symbiotic bacteria generally utilize fertilizer nitrogen in preference to fixing atmospheric nitrogen so that no net gain in yield is achieved with application of nitrogen fertilizer. When is the Best Time to Plant Soybeans? Research has shown that top soybean yields are usually achieved with plantings made during May-Early June. The type of weather expected at and after planting is a major factor in determining the optimum time to plant. Many Georgia soybean growers get land prepared for planting by May 5 and began planting as soon thereafter as soil moisture and temperature become favorable. Planting should be delayed until the surface soil temperatures reaches 68F for an extended 5-day period. Planting early in April causes very short plants and reduces yield in some years. Planting To Get A Uniform Soybean Stand: A good uniform soybean stand is essential for helping to control weeds and achieving high yield soybean production. Getting a good uniform stand involves using high quality seed, planting in warm moist soil and planting enough seed to achieve an initial stand of 8-10 plants per foot of row. High quality seed should be free of weeds and trash and have 80% or higher germination. Certified seed meet these standards, and generally pay dividends in getting good stands. It generally takes about 10-12 high quality seed to achieve the desired population level of 8-10 plants per row foot. What is the Break-Even Point for Soybeans? The break-even point for soybeans will vary according to market price and production input. Growers following all recommended practices in 1975 may invest $100-$100/acre into soybean production. At $5.00 per bushel, it will take a yield of about 22 bu/A to break even. Production practices should be "fine tuned" as much as possible to help insure getting high yield production and making a good profit with soybeans. Commodity Commission Grants $60,000 for Soybean Research: The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Soybeans recently earmarked $60,000 of check-off funds to be used for Georgia soybean research. These funds are provided to help support on-going research in soybean breeding, weed, disease and insect control, and cultural research for increasing soybean yields. Planting Depth for Soybeans: Many growers plant soybean seed too deep. The ideal planting depth is generally in the range of 1-1 1/2" or deep enough so that seed will remain in uniform moist soil for a 3-4 day period after planting. An exception would be where "hot" preemergence herbicides are used. In this situation, soybean seed should be placed 1 1/2-2" deep to minimize herbicide injury. Seed Fungicides May Help Marginal Quality Soybean Seed: Wherein high quality seed germinating better than 80% should be used to help insure getting a good soybean stand. If it is necessary to use marginal quality soybean seed for planting purposes which germinate in the range of 65-80%, a seed treatment with fungicide can help improve stand emergence especially when planting on cool or poorly drained soils and in areas where stand problems have occurred in the past. Fungicides satisfactory for seed treatment of soybeans include Captan or Thiram. Soybean sefed can be easily treated by thoroughly mixing them with a fungicide within a few weeks of planting. Fungicide treated seed should not be inoculated until just before planting. Rockdale 4-H'ers Extension Offers Win State Title "Rockdale county is trying to establish a dynasty in poultry judging," claims 4-H'er Mike Cebuski of Conyers. During two of the last three years Rockdale teams have captured the state poultry judging championship. This year two Rockdale teams finished first and second out of a field of 12 challengers at the state meet. Members of the number one team are Mike and brother Steve, Mary Hatch and Susan Herring. Melanie Neai, Ken Paris, Scott Shamp and Bob Myrick earned second-place for the number two Rockdale team. Marcus Cook, Aletae Patterson, Ted Dyer and Claudia Wright of Gordon county piaced third. Plan Service A plan service to distribute farm and home building plans free to residents of Georgia through the local County Extension Office is operated by the Extension Engineering Department. Anyone who desires a building plan may go by the local County Extension Office and look through a catalog of the plans that are available. There are two catalogs, one for Farm Building Plans and the other Home for Georgia Families. After se- lecting a plan, the County Extension Agent will be glad to order it direct from the Extension Plan Service. The orders are filled quickly and every effort is made to give return mail service. Page 12 THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, April 30, 1975 Wkai 9 Summer Annuals (Continued From Page 1) Pansy has been called cupid's flower furnishing a powerful love potion: The juice of it on sleeping eyelids laid, Will make a man or woman madly dote Upon the next live creature that it sees... Midsummer Night's Dream It's reputation as a love potion accounts for its common name of "heart ease." The pansies found growing in North America are descendants from English varieties. One wild species, Johnny-jump-up, Viola tricolor, has so often "jumped-up" where not planted that it has become naturalized here. When planted in garden borders, the saucy pansy face will brighten not only the place where you plan- ted it but also in such unlikely spots as gravel paths and driveways. Wild pansies such as Johnny- jump-up and cultivated pansies are both good flowers to grow. Hybrid pansies need shade and frequent picking if they are to survive the summer heat. Vglera Jessee second and third planting at four to six week intervals. The suggested planting intervals provide higher quality feed for over a longer period of time. Plants grow faster and grazing can begin quicker when a good supply of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is available when seed germinate. A soil test is the best guide for lime, phosphorus and potassium needs. Quality of second growth forage is not as good as first growth. This is one reason staggered planting dates are recommended. Cattle and forage crops should be rotationally grazed in such a manner as to provide young leaf forage for the cattle with high energy needs. Second and third growth of summer annuals may be used more efficiently by brood cows or other cattle with similar nutritional needs. Older cattle can make more efficient use of lower quality forage than young cattle. As forage quality declines, the forage may be used more efficiently by providing limited amounts of high quality concentrate feed for the cattle. The efficient use of summer annual grazing crops along with other sources of feed can help many farmers in growing or finishing beef calves and yearlings for a desirable market. Diagnostic Labs (Continued From Page 1) practitioner's judgment. Providing accurate and thorough laboratory data as rapidly as possible, by the best scientific procedures in current use, is the responsibility of the laboratory. Interpretation and application of these data are responsibilites of the veterinary practitioner. This arrangement is the most effective way to diagnose difficult animal disease problems. The professional staff of the laboratories and veterinarians throughout Georgia have developed a strong working relationship over the years through close cooperation on animal disease problems, and as a result veterinary service in Georgia is equal to and better than that in most states. The Atlanta Produce Dealers Association and the Georgia Department of Agriculture are the 1974 winners of the Phoenix Award presented each year by the Atlanta Advertising Club for outstanding promotion programs. The award winning entry was a calendar displaying the products available at the Atlanta Farmer's Market. Receiving the award from Ms. Ann McKee are Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Chairman of the Atlanta Produce Dealers Joe Cerniglia Jr., and Charles Tatum, president of the produce dealers. How one community called attention to the wonderful services our far mers render. Perhaps all of us need to say "thank you" to a farmer today or plan a similar exhibit as did the Elbert County Farm Bureau Women's Com mittee of Elberton. Homemakers Council Annual Egg Workshop Schedule Meeting The Georgia Homemakers Council annual meeting is scheduled for early May and every homemaker in the state is invited. The event takes place May 6 - 8 at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton. Interested homemakers should notify Mrs. L. R. Wells, Route 3, Box 136, Thomasville 31792. State Steer Show Names Ga.'s Best The State Junior Steer Show drew a record-high of 273 entries to the University of Georgia coliseum in Athens. Judged best of Georgia's best was a Charolais-Hereford cross exhibited by Gene Potts, a Moultrie FFA member. The reserve grand champion trophy went tb Carolyn Shackelford, Gwinnett county, who showed a Simmental-Angus-Hereford crossbred. The Georgia State Steer Show is an annual event conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Cooperative Extension Service and the Department of Agricultural Education. Caladiums (Continued From Page 1) soil. Apply a complete fertilizer at the rate of one teaspoonful per square foot of area. Caladiums will need a two inch mulch to conserve moisture. Water periodically to prevent the soil from drying. An even moisture supply coupled with high humidity is considered ideal. Fertilize plants monthly using an 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 analysis at the rate of 1 heaping teaspoonful of fertilizer spread even around the plant. Water after fertilizing. Caladiums are available at this time of year for outdoor planting. These have been forced into growth in greenhouses earlier for sale at this time of year. Large pots naturally make a show quicker and may even be divided for several tubers are generally planted in each pot. Smaller 3 inch potted caladiums are ideal for transplanting and quickly grow to full sized plants by mid summer. A. B.
