" John Purdy, Alice Watson, and Regina Rivers are card testing backtag samples from slaughter houses for brucellosis. Lois Barnes is p-torecbpearirnegt-urneeq-du, ip-tometn.net Bonnie Scott is doing a Rapid Screen Test field for collecting on samples from sale barns, also a test for blood samples for brucellosis. testing. Testing For Brucellosis The Brucellosis Laboratory of the Georgia Department of Agriculture continues to test a record number of samples. Already in 1975, over 200,000 samples have been tested for Brucellosis. This represents an increase of about 60,000 samples over the same period of time last year. This increase is largely due to the total testing program instituted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture at salebarns in July of 1974 and the additional infected herds which are discovered by that program. This, of course, is an important step toward the eventual eradication of Brucellosis. There has also been an increase in epidemiological work. This involves the culturing of milk and tissue from infected and exposed herds and greater at- tention to use of supplemental tests. Veterinarians, county agents, and livestock inspectors are continuously submitting samples from cases of larval infestation of animals. The lab checks about 70 cases a year for possible screwworm presence. Many of the samples submitted for Brucellosis testing are also checked for Anaplasmosis. This potential killer of adult cattle is spread by the bite of flies. Veterinarians suspecting this disease can request the test on samples submitted for Brucellosis testing or submit a sample for that purpose. Foi) Gilktf Four Rules Cut Growing Muscadine Industry Georgia Catfish Mighty Good The Catfish Farmers of America and The U.S. Trout Farmers Association - the two largest trade associations in the fish-farming industry-convened jointly this year. Because of the significance of the joint convention to the fresh water fish-farming industry, the event was called the CFA's Commercial FishFarming Showcase, and the trade show was enlarg; e d to include ;the exhibitors in all phases of the industry. Almost five-hundred persons from thirty-two states and Canada registered. It is interesting to note that Georgia differs from the major producing states in that our topography is different. Generally, our ponds are smaller and production is mainly for family and fee- (Continued On Page 8) Your Food Costs Food costs can be a major problem for anyone. Here are some tips on how to get the most from the food dollar. Shop only once a week, or even less if possible, and compare prices in different stores. You can sometimes stretch your food dollar by purchasing some of the larger quantities of canned goods and packages. If you can drink only a pint of tomato juice in one week, however, buying a quart is false economy. There are four undesirable kinds of shoppers. Don't be a "Pacifier." This is the person who carries grandchildren to the store and buys them everything they want. This can add up in grocery costs. Don't be a "Squeezer." Squeezing vegetables and fruits can cause all prices to rise more in the long run. Don't be a "Defroster." The person who removes an item from the frozen food section, decides it is not wanted, and leaves it on the shelf somewhere else to defrost is adding to his own food bill. Don't be a "Messer." When a can of soup is left in the ice cream chest or dog food is put in with the baby food, costs are increased because more labor is involved in keeping the store stock arranged. $ets Up State Association A new Georgia Muscadine Association is trying to bring some order to an industry which, according to one horticulturist, "is growing like a weed." Freezing Potatoes Muscadine acreage in Georgia has reached'about 1,000, according to Maurice E. Ferree, Extension horticulturist at the University of Georgia. There are no over-production and marketing problems now, but leaders feel there may be when some of the new plantings bear fruit. Ferree said it takes about three years for a vine- yard to start producing. To encourage efficient production and marketing is one purpose of the new Association. Others are to support research in cultural practices and to promote consumption. While the organization is open to all persons interested in muscadines, its leaders are particularly interested in 100 percent participation by commercial growers. Industry representatives are also invited to join. Other membership classifications are associate and honorary. Select smooth new potatoes directly from the garden. Peel or scrape, and scald for three to five mfnutes depending on the size. Cool, drain and package whole or sectioned in moisture-vapor-proof bags, cartons, etc. Ferree said the Association plans to conduct tours and educational programs to carry out its objectives. Anyone interested in joining and participating should contact Secretary-treasurer Aubrey Owen, Gay 30218. Page 2 we yet, letteu Dear Editor: I have read the BULLETIN every week and certainly do en- joy the informative, interesting articles. My mouth still waters every time I remember the delicious chicken pies my late grandmother, Mrs. Mattie Parks of Alpharetta, used to make for all her city grandchildren on cold, winter Sunday afternoons after a full day of our chasing cows, falling out of the barn loft and digging for Indian treasure (and finding mostly rocks). The pies always had lots and lots of light and dark chicken pieces, a delicious brown crust, a thick, creamy sauce, all kinds of vegetables and the thing I remember most -- three or four whole boiled eggs. I was wondering if any of your readers might have the recipe for such a chicken pie; and if so, if they would mind sharing it with all of us who no longer have a wonderful grandmother whose secret ingredient was always a generous helping of love. Wandering Jew is perhaps the best known variety of the Spiderwort family and brings to mind the jointed stems characteristic of the plant family. Unlike the silvery green or striped leaves of Wandering Jew, the common varieties have smooth dark green leaves and little blue flowers. The short life of these blooms is responsible for the common name, dayflower. These plants are found in ditches and by the road. They die down in cold weather but survive by underground tubers with many fibrous roots. Wandering Jew is considered one of the toughest house plants and extremely easy to grow. It can be rooted in water and even grown in water for awhile. Valera Jessee Mrs. Betty Cross Cater, Baxley, a 1953 graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College in Tifton, has been selected as Master Homemaker of the year. Here, Mrs. Carter and husband Virgil Carter accept the Award from Bill Skinner, President, Baldwin Alumni Association. Frank Strickland (C) and wife, Christine of Lakeland, has been named as the Baldwin Master Farmer. Strickland farms over 1700 acres in Lanier County and attended ABAC in 1941. Farmers there agree that prices from the processor are satisfactory but that they need more money from their fish or reduced feed cost. The rabbits ate my beans last year. I put Sevin on the leaves and they burned up. I had boxes all over but the rabbits were too smart to go in them. We don't have a fence around the garden. What can we do this summer? Mr. C. G., College Park The general consensus is that Georgia consumers demand a very small fish that is difficult for our growers to economically produce. Seems a lot of people had this problem. Mr. Hubert Handy, of the Game and Fish folks, recommends powdered sulphur dusted on vegetables will head the varmits off. Then just wash the vegies good and eat. Anyone who has eaten farm-fed channel catfish realizes that this is a fallacy. The consumers should be as interested in the size and quality of I am planting a small watermelon patch this summer and want a tew hills of a seedless variety. Can you recommend a good one? In the interest of the Catfish Far- mers Of America, the directors voted Agrirama Features Agricultural to hold their mid-year meeting at Auburn University. Auburn is the leading research center in fisheries in the United States and close to Georgia producers. A new attraction to the convention this year was the catfish cooking contest. This included a variety of dishes from gumbo to fried catfish. Georgia is extremely proud of Mrs. George Cain of Waynesboro, a finalist. Dr. Tom Hill of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Tifton presented an informative talk to the conventioneers on "The Comparison Of Albino and Channel Catfish." Dr. Hill has been instrumental in the catfish farmers of Georgia and our national organization from the beginning. In the interest of Brazilian fish and other imports that are affecting the farm-grown fish business, the CFA approved resolutions calling for tougher state labeling laws. Also the Old Time Festival Quiltin' bees, riving shingles, cracklin' bread cooked on a wood stove and home churned peach ice cream will be some of the featured activities during the Georgia Agrirama Spring Preview May 10-1 1 at the Agrirama in Tifton. Everyone in Georgia is invited. The Spring Preview is designed to give Georgians a glimpse of what the Agrirama will be when it opens in July of 1976. Plans for the day include tours of fifteen period buildings already under restoration; craft demonstrations of cotton spinning-blacksmithing, shingle riving and others; and entertainment (square dancing, fiddling, etc.). POISON IVY CURE Captain Joe Stanbro's wife, Brazelton, was preparing breakfast one morning recently and discovered a very unusual "double egg" had developed. The egg, possessing an outer shell encasing the white and an inner, softer, shell encasing the yoke, is one of the mysteries of the egg world. This is a close up of the removal of the inner shell of the egg. Although this is a rarity, it does occur occassionally. 31076, 912/847-3535 day, 847-3167 night.
