FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 61 Outstanding Georgia 4-H'ers "It's snowing!" "Snow . . . Oh boy, it's snowing." Yes, it's snowing, but only in a thin layer a thousand feet above Chicago's O'Hare Airport. As the youngsters deplane and head for a waiting bus, they're greeted with a cold wind, the lights of the tallest building in the world, but no snow. Forty-five young Georgians blew into the Windy City on December 1 to attend the 53rd annual National (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Tommy Walton, Director, Georgia 4-H Clubs, Cooperative Extension Service, U.G.A., Athens 30601.)__________________ 4-H Congress. When they left one week later, they took south a lot of weary bodies, eight national winners and $5,600 in scholarships. Competition for the trip to Chicago and the right to go on to national judging began at least a year ago. Each 4-H'er selected a project out of over fifty possible areas and devoted the next twelve months to improving his or her working knowledge of the area. Dave Lee, a high school senior from College Park, thought Chicago was "Okay." He should. He took home the top honor in 4-H work. Presented the silver Presidential Award in the name of the President of the United States, Lee was cited for his work with the Christian City Home for Children in Atlanta. Other national winners were Phyllis McNeal, Hoschton, automotive; Roger Adams, Elberton, dairy; Craig del, Blackshear, dog care and training; Roger C. Ryles, Jr., Gordon, crop protection-crop production; Barbara Ellard, Athens, food preservation; Kathy Entrekin, Carrollton, home management; and Steve Dykes, Cochran, public speaking. Andy Little of Flowery Branch was a sectional winner in the poultry project. Oh, by the way, it snowed. Six to eight inches. Ever seen Crackerland kids in a good snowstorm. It's almost embarrassing. Wednesday, January 1, 1975 January 1 Survey Of Planting Plans How strongly will farmers' 1975 acreage plans be influenced by the mix of high market prices, hefty demand and short stocks, and another year without a traditional farm support program? A wide ranging survey set for the first of the year by the U.S.D.A. will identify producers' current acreage plans for planting 10 major crops this coming spring. Information for the acreage estimates will be collected near January 1 through a mail survey of farmers. Official state and national estimates will be published January 22. Swine Disease Meet Scheduled Healthier hogs for higher profits will be the theme of a swine disease seminar to be held on the campus of Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, January 21. The seminar is presented by the Extension Service in cooperation with Georgia Southern and will be held at the Public Service Continuing Education Building. Registration begins at 8:30 p.m. Information Sought In Hay Then A theft involving 100 bales of fescue and bermuda hay occurred December 18th. This hay was stolen from a farm near Harlem. Anyone who can give assistance may keep the hay for information leading to the arrest of the thieves. Anyone having information should contact the Appling county sheriffs office at 5411717. Outstanding Farmer Contest Opens The search is again on for the nation's Outstanding Young Farmer. From among the local finalists in each state a farmer is selected to represent his state in national competition. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 35 and derive at least 2/3's of their annual income from farming or ranching. If you know of a young farmer you would like to nominate for this honor, contact your local Jaycee chapter. Father-Son P'nut Project Winners The 4-H Club Father-Son Peanut Project is held each year and rotated among peanut-producing counties throughout the state. This year the participating coun- ties were Crisp, Laurens, Telfair and Turner. The project involved 17 father-son team producing an average yield of 3,700 pounds per acre (which exceeds yield records in Georgia this year by 450 bounds per acre). The following were winners: first place Russell Irvin and Mr. Murray Irvin, Turner Co., second place Karl Senn and Mr. C. E. Seen, Laurens Co., third place Tom Reeves and Mr. T. D. Reeves, Turner Co. _ Agricultural^ Calendar MEETINGS AND SPECIAL EVENTS Meetings and special events will be listed in a separate column which will be run on a regular basis depending on schedule of events and space available (but not necessarily weekly.) Number 1 The common names associated with southernwood not only are indicative of its appearance but also its uses and superstitions. For example, "lad's love" and "maiden's ruin" identified the herb as a major ingredient in ancient love potions. "Garderobe" is the french name for southernwood meaning closet. For centuries, garderobe has been used to repel moths. Branches of the plant should be placed in cheesecloth bags to prevent the dry leaves from falling in the closet. The colloquial name "old man" has a dual meaning: first, the plant has a gray moss which grows on the branches which is reminiscent of an old man's beard; secondly, old man was widely prescribed in early Rome for balding. Southernwood is a 3 to 5 foot woody shrub with beautiful feathery green foliage. The lemon-scented leaves are used in making toilet waters as well as freshening linens. To successfully grow southernwood in your herb garden, select a spot in full sun which has a tendency to dry out. This plant does not like wet feet and actually prefers a dry environment similar to its native habitat of southern Europe.
