Now that the harvest is about complete we begin looking toward the ena-of-theyear surveys. Extremely volatile grain prices, depressed livestock and poul- try prices, drought, floods, skyrocketing operating expenses, shortages and many other factors make the planning phase of any farmer's or rancher's operation of critical importance. One important decision - making tool for many Georgia farmers and ranchers over the years has been production and inventory reports (Our guest columnist this week is Frasier T. Galloway, Statistician In Charge, USDA Statistical Reporting Service, 1861 West Broad Street, Athens 30601.)____________ published by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The source of information for these reports has been and continues to be producers themselves. To update these reports, the Georgia Crop Reporting Service must again have the cooperation of thousands of farmers and ranchers. Surveys for these end of year reports are now underway and will continue through the end of the year. A sample of farmers and ranchers will be asked about number of harvested acres, production of crops, livestock numbers, poultry numbers, and farm labor and wages. Some producers will receive a questionnaire in the mail. Others will be visited by a USDA representative. After filling in the answers to the questions, the questionnaires are forwarded to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service's office in Athens for summarization and analysis. With good response from producers in the sample, more accurate estimates can be made and at a lower cost. All individual reports are held in strict confidence. The dates and locations of the courses are Dec. 2-3 Georgia Southern College, Statesboro; Dec. 5-6 Rural Development Center, Tifton; Dec. 9-10 Gainesville Junior College, Gainesville; Dec. 1213 Northwest Georgia Experiment Station, Calhoun; Dec. 16-17 Macon Junior College, Macon. The same program will be presented at each location. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Programs and advance registration forms can be obtained at county Extension offices. Go. Led Nation Moisture And Temperature Affect Beetle Population As part of his research on the southern pine beetle, an entomologist at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations has determined that a relationship exists between moisture and the population of this insect that caused six Georgia counties to be declared disaster areas last summer. When the temperatures rise to above 60 degrees, the beetles are able to fly, says Dr. R. T. Franklin. When a suitable tree is found, the beeves begin boring through the outer bark to get to the inner bark. As they bore, they produce a chemical called pheromone which is released into the air and acts as a signal to call other beetles to the site. So a tree that may have only a half dozen beetles on it one day may have hundreds attacking it the next, and thousands by the third day. In Pu/pwood Georgia led the nation again in pulpwood production in 1973, producing a record-high total of 7.9 million cords. Production information just released for the year 1973 shows that Georgia led the nation for the ninth consecutive year. Georgia has led all southern states in pulpwood production in 1973, and six counties produced over 100,000 cords each. There is a correlation between moisture and the population of the southern pine beetle; Dr. R. T. Franklin has demonstrated the relationship in his research, and now hopes to determine what other weather conditions affect beetle population in order to predict in- festation. Everything Wort iwhile Requires Effort -- Including A Horse Hoof care is a necessity for a healthy horse. A horse's feet normally grow at the rate of about 1 /4 inch per month. If the horse is not ridden frequently, the excess growth will need to'be removed. Pesticide Meet Set For Tifton A workshop on the use of pesticides will be held at the Rural Development Center in Tifton November 19-21. The workshop is designed to give participants up-to-date information and recommendations on insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and nematicides. The workshop is being sponsored by the " Georgia Cooperative Extension Service as an aid to pesticide dealers and other interested persons. Highlight of the program is a tour of research projects During periods of hard work, especially on roads or hard surfaces, the rate of wear will exceed the rate of growth and shoeing will be required. Also, almost every horse requires some degree of corrective trimming and/or shoeing in order to improve his way of moving. The average pleasure horse does not need to be shod year-round. Especially during the winter months, regular hoof cleaning and trimming will of- (Continued On Page 8) The beetles girdle the tree in the inner bark with a network of passages where they lay eggs. "When there can be 20 pairs of beetles at work per square foot, it doesn't take long for them to cut off the flow of the tree's, sustenance. The girdling done by the beetles has the same effect as if the bark had been stripped off the tree dies," says Franklin. NATURAL DEFENSE Pine trees have a natural defense against the beetles in the form of pitch flowing through the inner bark, he continues. If the tree is vigorous, the pitch will flow strongly enough to stop the pest and literally "pitch out" the invader. But trees lose their vigor, and therefore their resistance to attacks, when there is a reduction of available moisture from rain and in the ground, says Franklin. While such moisture deficiencies exist, one generation of beetles may in a two week period easily bore into a tree, lay eggs, and then move on to infest another tree. This leads to overlapping generations, all of which are attacking more trees and producing more beetles. "By the end of October, 187 trees can be infested and killed by the brood resulting from a single tree infested in April," he says. "During the winter months," he continues, "there is little need for water, but in spring, evaporation and transpiration increase rapidly and soon water need surpasses precipitation. Also known as herb of grace, the blue green leaves are deeply notched and divided. Small yellowgreen flowers later turn into decorative brown seed capsules often used in fall arrangements. Rue is perennial and grows to a height of 2-3 feet. Legend has it that if arrow tips were dipped in juice extracted from rue they would never miss their target. Also, if flints of old-fashioned guns were boiled with rue leaves, the weapon would always be accurate. Rue is a very bitter herb and is seldom used in cooking.
