Agribusiness - 
The New Byword 
Agriculture is big business in Georgia. It is an industry which touches every citizen of our State. In fact, agriculture during recent years has become so intertwined with industry that it has lost much of its support in our State. 
Agribusiness is the new theme. It is the modern expression desig- 
ned to bring agriculture and industry closer together. Hopefuli ly, agriculture, ijan industry it-self, will be properly recognizjed in the future for its economic 'impact in our State's overall economy. The Georgia Agribusiness Council, organized in 1966, was formed to bring about better communications between agriculture and business. It

is a non-profit organization of individuals, firms and commodity groups designed to represent and promote the agricultural interests of Georgia. The Council is guided by a Board of Directors from its statewide membership. 
Plans are now underway to expand the membership and program of the Agribusiness Council. A membership drive will be launched soon to enroll additional agriculturallyrelated individuals and firms. A strong legislative program will be formulated to better represent agriculture in government. The major thrust will be to develop domestic and export markets for Georgia's agricultural products and services. The staff will attempt to provide more agricultural information and services to the membership. 
The Georgia Agribusiness Council also works closely with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Community Development. 
It is my privilege to be the Executive Director of this fine organization. I have never seen a more committed and dedicated slate of Officers and Directors. The members at large are ready and willing to support our efforts. And, it has the support of the Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin, and his staff. 
Our new program will be a dynamic force of positive action, and as we develop our resources of members and finances, the task will be

Two cattle rustlers have been apprehended and placed under a $10,000 bond in Walker county. 
Cooperating in the effort were Sheriff Ralph Jones' office and the Georgia Department of Agriculture. 
The men, Gordon L. Jones and Ronnie Lee Kellett, allegedly stole two calves from the Charles Logan farm in Trion and were apprehended when the Sheriff checked local packing houses for fresh carcases. When two were found, he contacted the person who had carried them to the packing house for processing. 
The man said he had purchased the animals from two men who delivered the carcases in a car trunk. The man 
who bought the animals has also been charged with receiving and concealment of stolen property._______ 
 
Insecticidal control of the fall ar- 
myworm and other insects contributes significantly to increased 
peanut production costs. Results of the study suggest that plant breeding to incorporate insect resistance may aid other control measures and reduce insecticide use. 
Some 14 standard peanut varieties were rated for preference resistance to foliage-feeding insects in the field. Similar preferences were expressed often by two or more insect species feeding simultaneously on the forages. 
Starr was found most preferred and Southeastern Runner 56*15, least preferred. Other insect species in the foliage-feeding complex included the corn earworm and the velvetbean caterpillar.

The Coastal Plains Experiment Station, Tifton, will hold a Georgia State Association Boar Tested sale August 29 at one p.m. Seventy head of tested boars will be offered for sale.

Thomasville Market 
To Be Improved 
Bids for construction improvements and additions on the Thomasville Farmers Market will be opened September 10, by the Georgia Building Authority in room 212 of the Trinity Washington Building in Atlanta. 
Commissioner Irvin said he was particularly happy to see this project, long sought by him, State Senator Henry Russell (formerly a representative from Thomasville) and Representative Jim Keyton, become a reality. 
Plans include a new administration building with facilities for meetings and cooking demonstrations, a refrigerated broker building with 14 bays, three additional bays in the retail shed area and a new truck transfer area. 
Other buildings will be improved and at least one building moved to improve efficiency and traffic flow, the Commissioner said. Work should begin shortly after the bid opening on the tenth of September. 
"The Thomasville market is one of the most utilized farm markets in the state," Irvin said. 
"Through the efforts of this department, the State Legislature and the farmers and merchants in the Thomasville area, the half million dollar project is now well on its way to becoming a reality," Irvin said. 
Flatlanders Frolic 
The first Flatlanders Arts and Crafts Show will be held September 1 and 2 as part of the fourth annual Flatlanders Fall Frolic in Lakeland. The frolic is sponsored by the Lanier County Lions Club for the benefit of the local recreation park.

As the days grow shorter and 
cooler weather is in the offing, many Georgians are preparing bird feeders for added enjoyment during the fall season. With just a little effort, even 
a barren yard in the middle of town can be made attractive to birds. 
A feeder doesn't have to be 
 
elaborate to attract birds. If you are thinking of winter-feeding birds, you must keep it up once you begin. If you don't, there is a chance that you will have killed your birds with "kin- 
dness". Through feeding, it is possible to keep birds which would 
normally leave the area. 
 
Tin Can Feeder Wash With Vinegar, Dry, Wash With Clean Water. Dry. Then Paint With Exterior House Paint, Metal Paint, Or Enamel. Use Metal Primer H Available. 
Place the feeders near shrubs or trees, and if possible, near a window where you can watch the birds. 
Finally, keep a constant supply of food of the right kind in your feeder, but not too much -- it may deteriorate before it is eaten.

Dear Editor: 
I wanted to write and tell you what the MARKET BULLETIN has meant to me. 
Back in the days of my childhood on a farm in NW Georgia, I remember my father pouring over the BULLETIN. What it meant to me at that time was the game of looking for a name or a town that I knew. 
However, during the pre-depression days, it was much more for me. A bride and home beginner on a farm in South Georgia, I read and re-read it for pleasure, education and information. I became an advertiser and customer. I ex changed Cornish Game roosters with other readers in order to build up my flock and to prevent in-breeding. 
Dull you say? Ah no -- life on the farm could be very ex citing in those days. The garden seeds I ordered from ads in the BULLETIN were a little different for I looked for the old fashioned blue bean, the half-runner bean, cabbage collard and shallot buttons. 
As the years went by, I got the boys raised, the animals in pasture and I took to flowers. I exchanged dahlias with the readers of the BULLETIN until I had dozens of colors. 
My husband, the hard-working farmer, had to retire because of ill-health and many a day he and I poured over the different ads, the news and recipes that were beginning to appear. However, the time came when his years of hard work took their toll and he passed away. 
Left alone, I went to work and what with my job and gran dchildren I did not read the BULLETIN but one day I saw a request for a cushaw pie so I sat down and wrote the recipe from memory and sent it in. 
Several weeks after this was printed I received a letter from a gentleman who described himself as "a lonely retired veteran" who would like to hear from someone in my part of the state. After about a week of thinking of how I liked to write and receive letters, perhaps I might cheer up the old gentleman. 
Well I did, and am still trying to cheer him up, for after five months, a few hundred letters exchanged and a visit to my home town, we were married. We both agree that it is good to have someone to grow old with, someone who remem bers the good old days and just recently the 100th anniver sary BULLETIN came out and we enjoyed recalling memories. 
So I say, "Long live the BULLETIN' and may future generations gain as much as we have from its weekly visit.

Dear Editor, 
Sulphur smoked apples remain beautifully white and may be used in any manner in which fresh apples are used. I have smoked pears also, with good results. 
Fruit preserved in this manner does not require refrigera tion and it will keep for months; I have kept it well into early summer and have never had any spoilage. 
I use a metal drum. One could use a wooden box or barrel. A card board box could be used by arranging some way to suspend the fruit and cover the whole arrangement tightly. 
Below is a diagram showing arrangement used. Broomstick or cane. Bag of apples suspended (by wire or cords) on broomstick. Red not skillet and sulphur. Bricks or stone (could make platform by turning a pan or skillet upside down, ^-->&. only necessary if you're A r ^ using flammable box or ' ^ -^ barrel). Plastic sheet (drop cloth) or what-have-you. Cord to hold cover arranged with slip knot. 
When placing pan in drum and sulphur on pan, slip the knot and insert pan and sulphur quickly keeping cover in place as much as possible. 
Wash 1/2 bushel apples, quarter, peel and core them. Place apples in a clean thin cotton bag. (Cheesecloth or mesh laundry bag is good). Tie both ends leaving loops to slip over broomstick. 
Heat a cast iron pan or skillet to "red hot". With tongs, place hot pan quickly into bottom of metal drum (or similar container). With cover in place, slip 1 tablespoonful sulphur on the hot pan being careful to keep cover in place. Pull cord tight to hold cover in place and to retain sulphur smoke. Leave apples 2 hours before removing them. Store them in any clean containers; preferable not air tight. If a bit of sulphur odor clings after a few weeks, open container so the air can circulate and dissipate the odor.

ZIPPY" TOMATO RELISH 
 
12 ripe tomatoes, chopped in large pieces 
2 big onions, chopped in large pieces 
2 bell peppers, chopped in large pieces 
 
2 cups hot peppers, chopped in large pieces 
(less may be used) 2 cups vinegar 2 cups sugar 2 tablespoons salt 
 
Mix all ingredients and simmer about 2 hours. This is very hot, so less pepper may be used depending on your taste.

CUCUMBER ASPIC 
 
2 pkgs. lime jello 2 cups hot water 2 cups grated 
cucumber 2 tbsp. vinegar 
 
2 tbsp. onion juice Dash of cayenne 1 tsp. salt Thin strips 
green pepper 
 
Dissolve gelatin (jello) in hot water. Add cucumber, vinegar, onion juice, cayenne, salt, and pepper strips. Turn into mold and chill until firm. 
 
LIMA BEANS EN CASSEROLE 
 
1/4 Ib. salt pork 21/2 cups boiled 
lima beans 1 small onion 
sliced 
 
1/2 cup diced carrots 
1 Tbsp. butter 1/2 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. pepper 
 
Fry fat out of salt pork. Put in greased baking dish. Add 
other ingredients. Half fill dish with water. Cover and bake in slow oven 300 degrees until carrots are tender. Serves 6.

SQUASH SOUFFLE 
 
2 cups yellow squash 
3 Tbsp. butter 1 cup milk 1 cup dry 
bread crumbs 1/2 cup grated 
cheese (optional) 
 
2 Tbsp. dry onion soup mix 
Salt and pepper to taste 
2 eggs 1/2 cup buttered 
bread crumbs 
 
Cook squash; press through sieve. Melt butter in hot milk. Pour over bread crumbs; mix well. Add to squash; add seasonings. Beat eggs; add to mixture. Pour into buttered baking dish. Top with buttered bread crumbs; sprinkle with cheese. .Bake at 300 until firm. 
 
NO COOK LYE SOAP 
 
2 quarts grease 1 quart water 1 can lye 
 
1/2 box Borax 5 tbspns. ammonia 
 
Mix lye in water. Mix Borax in a little extra water. Add ammonia, mix with grease, stir well, strain, pour in glass pan, set aside to harden and mark in bars.

Simmer one cup of leaves in two cups water for about 10 minutes. Strain liquid and add two cups sugar. Boil until it spins a thread from a spoon or will form a hard ball when dropped in a cold glass of water. Pour mixture onto buttered surface and cut into bite-size pieces before it hardens. 
You have just made horehound drops, a delightful candy reminiscent of penny jawbreaker days and a useful cough lozenge dating back to Roman times. Some folks claim horehound to be one of the most gentle and harmless healers known to man. It supposedly will cure coughs, croup, colds and hoarseness. 
Horehound is a characteristic member of the mint family with squarish stems and wrinkled, graygreen leaves. The most certain identification is the musky, bittersweet taste. The plant looks weedy but can serve as an edging in a semi-wild garden. It is not a decorative plant and will come back where you don't want it. It multiplies by runners and is aggressive, often overcoming smaller plants in the area.

A judgement has been brough against H. O. Warren, doing busines as Warren Seed Company, Murray Kentucky, for violating the Federa 
Seed Act. The case involved a shipment o

Georgia. In addition, one of the lots was found to be falsely labeled as tc the percentages of pure seed and weed seed. 
The Georgia Department of Agri- 
culture collected the evidence used in the investigation. 
The Federal Seed Act is a truth-in- 
labeling law designed to protect farmers and consumers in the purchase 
of seed. In part, it requires that seed 
be truthfully and completely labeled^ 
 
Locomotive Festival 
 
The Georgia Department of Agriculture in its ever continuing effort to promote international trade and create new markets for Georgia products met recently with visitors from Africa. Representing Zaire, Morocco, Ghana, and Nigeria the visitors discussed trade with Russ Hudson, Director, and Bob Miller of the Department's International Trade Division. 
 
The "Great Locomotive Festival Days" will be held August 31 - September 2 in Adairsville. The festival will feature "old-timey" arts and 
crafts. 
 
Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic 
 
disease which is found worldwide in 
 
animals and man. In adults, it can be 
 
so mild that the infected person may 
 
never realize he has had it; or, it may 
 
be mis-diagnosed as "Flu" or 
 
mononucleosis. 
 
The real danger of this disease is to 
 
the unborn if an expectant mother 
 
acquires toxoplasmosis, it can affect 
 
the unborn infant in much the same 
 
way as german measles. The baby 
 
may suffer from eye defects, brain 
 
damage, or mental retardation. 
 
Because the parasite is so wides- 
 
pread among domestic animals, there 
 
is virtually no hope of eliminating it 
 
the way we have eliminated malaria. 
 
Fortunately, it can be avoided with 
 
some very simple precautions. 
 
The following are some recom- 
 
mendations from Dr. Keith Sikes of 
 
the epidemiology section of the 
 
Georgia Department of Human 
 
Resources: 
 
1. Poorly cooked meat is a known 
 
vehicle of toxoplasmosis, as well as 
 
other diseases, therefore meat should 
 
be thoroughly cooked especially if it 
 
is to be consumed by pregnant 
 
women. 
 
2. All persons 
 
particularly 
 
pregnant women exposed to cats, 
 
should wash their hands .before 
 
eating. 
 
3. Pregnant women with cats 
 
should be advised additionally that: 
 
a. The litter box should be emp- 
 
tied daily by someone else, 
 
b. Indoor cats should not be 
 
permitted to go outside. 
 
c. Outdoor cats, including strays, 
 
should not be allowed in the 
 
house. 
 
d. Raw meat products should 
 
not be fed to cats. 
 
New Facility 
 
For Licenses 
Georgia driver's licenses may now be obtained from the State Farmer's Market in Forest Park. The office will be open to the public August 20. 
This facility will be staffed with fully trained examiners and will be open Tuesday through Saturday. This service to Georgians has been made possible through the cooperation of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

I have a rubber plant that is too tall to keep in my house. I have it outside under a big tree now but would like to cut part of it off and root it so I can move it inside this fall. 
Mrs. F. C., Alpharetta Dr. James Lang, a rubber tree expert we just happen to have, says they normally root with little effort. Cut two or three lateral branches one to two feet long, remove the lower leaves and plant in large pots containing soil with good drainage. Place the pots in a shaded area where there is good air moisture (limited air flow). A better method is air-layering. Tie sphagnum moss around the base of a young shoot which has been notched to stimulate root development. Keep the sphagnum moist until,roots develop and then pot. If you want only one plant, cut the large plant back to one and one-half or two feet.* I*t w* i*ll sprout and produce new limbs.

Vinegar Method 
Not For Beans 
Processing home canned green beans with vinegar is a risky fad that seems to be gaining popularity among many Georgia homemakers. 
There are two variations of the vinegar processing method but neither one is considered safe. One method is to add vinegar to the green beans, cook them 30 minutes, then pack them into sterilized jars. The other method is to add vinegar to each jar, then process them in a boiling water bath. 
Neither method is recommended. Green beans are low acid vegetables. They must be processed in a pressure canner to destroy the organism that causes botulism food poisoning. 
DON'T SCALP LAWN 
The vigor of a lawn depends on the amount of food manufactured by the grass. Close mowing, which removes a considerable portion of the leaf blade area, can drastically reduce the vigor of the grass. So it is especially important to avoid scalping a lawn during the hot dry periods of summer.
