FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia* Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 60 Wednesday, August 21, 1974 Eager, Excited A bout Tomorrow I am grateful for this opportunity to bring greetings from the Georgia Association FFA, my fellow State Officers and nearly 20,000 FFA members. Our FFA Theme for 1974 is "FFA FOR TOMORROW'S AGRICULTURE". As America prepares to celebrate 200 years of existence as a na- tion, we are surprised and sometimes frightened by the problems facing us in the agricultural field as related to us each day by the news , media. We live in a hungry world. A world with an ever increasing number of mouths to feed. A world which because of cheaper American dollars can successfully compete with the American consumer for human food. Through applied research, hard work and long hours, and high investment cost, the American farmer (Our guest columnist this week is Jeffrey Parker, outgoing State FFA President, 1973-74, Route I, Waycross, Georgia.)___________ has increased productivity per man far and above that of any other segment of the American economy. Let's face it. The most exportable commodities America has today are our agricultural products. Look at the agricultural exports that have finally aided in our balance of payments abroad. PREPARED. READY. EAGER. EXCITED about tomorrow. These are the youth who, trained in agriculture proficiency and given experience in leadership, will emerge as the vital force to insure that tomorrow's agriculture will meet the needs of tomorrow's consumers. They are currently student-members of the vocational agricultural education - FFA program. These students of vocational agriculture and FFA members who are preparing for tomorrow's agriculture know that they must prepare well. They know that the opportunities are many and the challenges are great. If today's FFA member goes into agriculture sales and service or research he or she is faced with the challenge of supplying the farmer with nitrogen fertilizer which must be manufactured at an increasing rate with a decreasing supply of natural gas. As future agriculturist we must devise a system for supplying the farmer with enough equipment to feed the world and yet it must operate on considerably less fuel or energy than it is currently consuming. Those of us who select production agriculture as our vocation must be true businessmen. This businessman (Continued On Page 8) 1973 Georgia Farm Receipts Cash receipts from farm marketings and Government payments rose 41 per- cent in Georgia during 1973, and totaled over $2 billion. Commercial broilers ranked in the top spot as the leading source of farm income continuing a reign that began in 1956. Sales of livestock and livestock products brought in $1,187,072,000, accounting for 58.1 percent of the total income while crop sales made up 39.1 percent and amounted to $797,585,000. Government payments decreased $24 million-down 30 percent from 1972 payments and totaled 457,079,000. Livestock and Products Government Payments $1,187,072,000 $57,079,000 Crops $797,585,000 Percent of total 58.1% Percent of total 2.8% Percent of total 39.1% Pecan Festival To Be Sept. 79-21 The Pecan Festival is to be held September 19, 20 and 21, and is looking forward to attracting a large number. This is a very worthwhile project, focusing the national limelight on Albany as the "Pecan Capital of the World. The three-day festival will be topped off by the Pecan Festival Parade on Saturday, September 21. Anyone wishing to enter a unit should contact the Albany Chamber of Commerce. Youthful Insects Aid Agriculture Honey bees are man's most useful insects, according to the U.S.D.A. Honey bees produce about $50 million worth of honey and beeswax each year. They also pollinate more than $1 billion worth of U.S. agricultural crops. Landscape Plants "Pinched Back" Now Plants used in a landscape pattern often need to be pruned or shaped to fit a particular need. Rarely do we see shrubs that are not pruned at some time. However, much cutting back of foliage could be avoided with good planning and plant selection. When shrubs are allowed to grow freely for years, the entire theme may be so altered that the design is completely lost. Many overcrowded foundation plantings are evidence of this. As new spring growth begins on shrubs, the new growth may be "pinched out" or pruned to force a more compact growth. A plant may be trained to grow into the desired shape with regular pruning during the growth period. This may save severe cutting back of plants in the dormant season, particularly broad-leaved evergreens. Begin pruning operation when the plant is small. If allowed to grow for several years before any training is done, the shaping is more difficult. Number 34 "Open Dating" Now Qualified Effective September 7, consumers will be finding more precise "open dating" information on packaged meat and poultry to help assist them in determining the freshness of these products. In a move designed to eliminate confusion over product dating, me it and poultry processors who volu itarily elect to put a calendar date rather than a coded date on their products, must let consumers know what that date means. The calendar date will have to be identified as a "packing date," "sell by date," or "use before date." These dates may be qualified by such terms as "for maximum freshness," or similar terms. Some processors are already using open dating in response to consumer demand, but there has been some confusion as to the specific meaning of such dates. Money Maker Club Announces Members Talmadge Elliott, Lamar Edge and Leon Bius, Worth county farmers, won first, third and fourth respectively in the 1973 Money Maker Cotton Club. G. R. Woodard, Turner County, won second place honors in the contest. Elliott produced 1,563 pounds per acre on 90 acres. Woodard had an average yield of 1,272. pounds per acre on 12.2 acres of cotton. Edge had 1,109 pounds per acre on 8.4 acres and Bius had 1,043 pounds per acre on 30 acres. Libby Stegall was crowned 197475 Georgia Cotton - Queen at Georgia Cotton Promotion Day held in Vienna recently by P. R. Smith, Chairman, Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton. Miss Stegall is from Thomasville, and will represent the Georgia cotton industry in the state throughout the coming year. Page 2 letieu Dear Editor: I have been looking for the elecampane mentioned several weeks ago in the BULLETIN but nobody seems to know where I can get some. Do you have any additional information or know where I might purchase the plant? Name Withheld By Request (Editor's Note: We finally succeeded in finding a picture of elecampane which we hope will aide you in finding the plant. This plant has become so naturalized, growing in fields and along roadsides that we doubt any commercial nurseries stock it. We feel certain, however, that many of our readers can supply the plant now that they know what they are looking for. 2-6 feet high Leaves: hairy above wooly beneath toothed margins basal leaves 10-20 inches long 4-8 inches wide Flowers: 2-4 inches across yellow rays 1 to 1 1/2 inches long.) Please identity this insect. They are in my kitchen and I would like to know how to get rid of them. Mrs. P. J.. Unknown Our Plant and Entomology Division has identified the insect as the German roach. For the most effective control of roaches, we recommend I he use of Dia/inon spray. However, unless the kitchen is completely sanitary, the application of the spray will have no effect. There should be no tablescraps left out, no dishes in the sink and garbage containers should be closed. Spray around baseboards and under cabinets. Do not spray cooking utensils, food, or eating utensils. We are having problems long around time for the green bean to come up. This ole creature we call ground hog or whistle pig eats the beans before they get the si/c of a needle. Please let me hear if you have a remedy for this 'problem. Mrs. B. C.. Sautec The Game and Fish Division of the Department of Natural Resources advises that powdered sulphur dusted on your bean plants and vegetables will act as a repelent. This substance is non-poisonous and is not harmful to humans. If this method is not satisfactory, we would suggest that you fence your vegetable garden with poultry wire. Eager, Excited About Tomorrow (Continued From Page 1) must be an expert in both management and labor. He will be in charge of a physical plant with fixed assets approaching 1/2 million dollars. Although he often feels like it, he can't strike for higher wages. FFA - For Tomorrow's Agriculture. Just as agriculture is much more than farming, our instruction in vocational agriculture is much more than production agriculture and farming. Likewise our FFA organization trains for much more than just a vocation. Just as feeding the world tomorrow is a challenge. The success of FFA can be summed up in the same word "CHALLENGE-CHALLENGE." It challenges the timid freshman to write and deliver a speech. It challenges the eager sophomore to master parliamentary procedure. It motivates the members of the local chapter to work together to achieve common goals or to perform com- munity services. It challenges all of its members to achieve excellence in the performance of their occupational choice and to develop leadership abilities. When James Garfield was asked what he meant to do in life, he answered, "First of all I must make myself a man. If I do not succeed in that, I can succeed in nothing." The Pressure Canner In an old and even a new pressure canner, steam may escape from around the lid. The most common cause of this is due to a hardened or old gasket around the lid. When the gasket is bad, replace it. Another reason for escaping steam would be a warped lid. If the lid is badly warped, it may be necessary to replace the canner. To prevent a warped lid, always take off the hot pressure canner lid and set onto a flat surface. Never rest lid on its gauge. Even though steam escapes from around a lid with an accurate gauge, pressure and temperature can be accurate. That is, if the correct temperature and pressure are registered on the gauge. It just takes more heat to maintain the right pressure and temperature. purpose of the FFA is to develop boys and girls into men and women. A machine may do the work of 100 ordinary men but no machine can do the work of one extraordinary man. I challenge each of you to accept the motto of our National FFA Secretary, Fred McClure of San Augustine, Texas. It is simply this: "LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY." Tomorrow's agriculture needs for us to do just that, lead, follow or get out of the way. Wednesday, August 21, 1974 Versatile Pork Cooked many Ways Pork is a versatile meat. Pork car- casses produce a variety of cuts which are in turn processed into many different products. Because pork is processed in so many different ways, you should read processed pork labels very carefully to be sure of what you're buying. This will permit you to better com- pare prices and also help you to use it properly. Recommended cooking methods for the most common pork cuts are: Roast Fresh and smoked loin roasts, fresh and smoked hams, fresh and smoked picnic shoulders and Boston shoulder roasts with oven temperature for roasting at 325 degrees F.; broil or fry chops, ham slices, shoulder steaks, bacon, Canadian bacon and sausage; braise chops, tenderloin (fillet), shoulder steaks, diced pork meat and spareribs; and cook in liquid hocks, smoked picnic shoulder and spareribs.
