FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /wn, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 60 C. W. Dofcte Brucellosis - Dread Disease There is presently more Brucellosis in the cattle population in Georgia than in any recent year. While the majority is located in beef cattle, it creates a potential threat and hazard to the dairy industry. If it were not for the ring test conducted on milk, I daresay many of our dairies would also be in serious trouble. In fact, there is enough Brucellosis in Georgia today that we are making a change in our recommendation concerning calfhood vaccination. If your dairy is bordered by a beef cattle operation or if beef cattle are located upstream from yotlr location, I would suggest that you give serious thought and reinstitute a calfhood vaccination program in your herd. As of this date, only 73 counties out of 159 are free of Brucellosis. State and federal regulatory officials cannot eradicate Brucellosis from Georgia without the full sup- (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. C. N. Dobbins, Jr., Head, Extension Veterinary Department, University of Georgia, Athens 30601.)______ port of the livestock industry in the state. To be sure the on-again, offagain funding of the Brucellosis program might have contributed somewhat. The fact remains that the industry itself has not had the full determination to rid themselves of this unnecessary threat and expense. We have not shown the determination to remove at least one percent of the problem that threatens to explode all over the state again. As regulatory programs go, the Brucellosis program has been somewhat of a stepchild. Instead of completing the eradication of this disease, personnel and funds have been shifted from Brucellosis eradication on occasion to work in other areas of disease eradication. Necessary funds for an all-out eradication effort have not been available. On the other hand, some people that traffic and trade in beef cattle have used every loophole plus various methods of deceit for their own personal gain. Their actions threaten the entire cattle industry in Georgia. The time will soon come in which you and I and others interested in cattle production in Georgia must stand up and be counted, give our regulatory officials necessary support and insist that this threat be eliminated. The dairy industry has also shown it can be done. However, you stand to lose the ground you have gained if the threat isn't stopped in beef cattle. Wednesday, July 31, 1974 MALE FEMALE Watch For Deadly Dog Tick Georgia has experienced an unusual number of cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever this summer. It is transmitted by the American dog tick, common in Georgia, and can be fatal if not treated in time. So far, seven deaths have occurred in Georgia this year. Chills, fever, and headache, followed by a rash similar to measles are signs of R.M.S.F. Symptoms usually occur within ten days. A tick found attached to a person should be removed carefully, placed in a clean screw-cap vial with a moistened paper towel, and sent to Epidemiology, Room 13-H, Georgia Department of Human Resources, 47 Trinity Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia, 30334. Ticks should be removed with tweezers, forceps, or gloved hands, and if possible, removed alive. To remove the tick properly, grasp near mouth parts and lift gently upward and forward. Insert needle between skin and tick and pry out tick. Disinfect site of bite immediately. Do not squeeze the body of the tick or break the tick if possible. Do not rub the bite until it is disinfected. The American dog tick has been found mostly in Atlanta and the north Georgia areas. Persons who are casually and infrequently exposed can protect themselves adequately by following the rules: dress properly, use repellant generously, examine yourself at night, and if you get sick, tell the doctor about the tick. Check Bermuda Brass Year-Round Safety For Other Grasses Georgia farmers are cautioned to check any Bermuda stolens purchased for planting to be sure that nutgrass or common Bermuda grass is not present. We have received complaints that fields have been planted with Coastal Bermuda grass that contain both nutgrass and common Bermuda grasses. Where possible a purchaser should check the field where stolens are to be dug to see that he is getting only Coastal Bermuda grass. Order Seedlings The following tree seedlings are being grown for sale by the Georgia Forestry Commission during the 1974-75 planting season: Eastern White, Improved Loblolly, Improved Slash, Shortleaf, Slash and Virginia. For a price list and order blanks, contact your local Forestry unit. Effective August 1, Iowa will quarantine all cattle entering that state from states with a high incidence of brucellosis for 30 days. The quarantine will be released upon evidence of a negative test. All tests will be done at the owner's expense. '_______ Prevents Fatalities Farm and home safety has become a year-round program in Georgia's agricultural communities. However, the month of July has been especially meaningful as Georgia and farmers throughout the country have observed "National Farm Safety Week", July 25-31. Farm accidents not only dec ,ase agricultural productivity but also produce serious injuries and result in the loss of thousands of lives each year. "Farm Safety Week" gives us the opportunity to renew safety emphasis on the farm, in the home, and in recreational areas. All Georgians are urged to observe farm and home safety practices not only during "National Farm Safety Week" but throughout the year ahead. Mountain Fair For nine exciting days and nights, the hills of north Georgia will come alive, August 2-10, for the 24th An- nual Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee. No commercial exhibits ... just talents from the needle ... from the pantry ... from the fields, gardens and forests ... displayed by individuals, communities, clubs, churches, agricultural and other agencies. Number 31 Tobacco Prices Improve Somewhat During the first two weeks of tobacco sales on the 1974 GeorgiaFlorida flue cured markets a total of 54,550,000 pounds was sold for an average price of $89.66 per hundred pounds. This compares to an average price of $86.78 for 69,500,000 pounds sold during the first two weeks of last years sales. On opening day this year Georgia prices averaged $87.32 per hundred pounds as compared to opening day prices in 1973 of $82.92. On the eighth sale day this past Thursday this year's average price on Georgia markets had risen to $95.13 cwt, which was $7.81 more than the average price on opening day. This compared to $88.83 on the eighth day of sales last year. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said that although prices had increased somewhat since opening day that they were still not up to what he thinks, and most growers think, they should be because of increased production costs. The Commissioner said that he certainly hoped prices would continue to increase as the floors began to fill with better quality leaf tobacco. Cans In Demand - But Supply Short The Georgia Department of Agriculture has received several requests for assistance in locating canning jars and tin cans used for canning during the past few weeks. Reports received by the Department indicate that tin cans and jar lids seem to be in shorter supply than jars. The influx of "victory-type gardens" and the availability of fresh produce to consumers has caused the largest shprtage of tin cans ever experienced. According to officials at the Atlanta Farmers Market Canning Plant, about two and one-half times more people are canning this year than last year at this time. The Department has contacted the manufacturers of cans and relief is in sight; however, not in time for the current crop coming in. Anthrax Control Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has rescinded the order restricting the movement of animals from Texas and Oklahoma into Georgia, as both outbreaks of Anthrax have been brought under control. Arnold, 1600 3rd Ave., Albany. Page 8 What 9s Fewcel? Fennel is an aromatic herb that looks like celery and tastes like anise or licorice. There are several well-known species including common fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), finnocchio (F. dulce) and sweet fennel (F. officinalis). Common fennel has hollow, upright stems which are served raw like celery. It reaches a height of about 5 feet with thin, straight and very finely cut leaves. Finnocchio has leaf stalks so thick and overlapping that they form a bulb-like growth level with the ground. When cooked, this makes a pleasant anise-tasting vegetable. It is darker green than the others. Sweet fennel is an annual from southern Europe and is the most popular of the three. The whole plant is stiffer and does not wilt as quickly when picked. It is not as tall as common fennel and is served raw or cooked much like the other varieties. Fennel is a symbol of flattery and an emblem of heroism. Sugarcoated fennel seeds were eaten as a confection during the colonial days but few people are familiar with this herb. Since all of the fennel plant is edible (seeds, bulbs, leaves, and stalks), it certainly is not a plant to be overlooked. Valera Jessee Cindy Kimsey, a freshman at ABAC in Tifton, works with her horse, Joker's Sissy. She won 8th in national competition in riding, 4th in the Miss Appaloosa Queen pageant and a $500 scholarship at the National Appaloosa Horse Show recently held in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Cindy is from Lilburn, Georgia. Rodeo Coming Warm Springs will have its third annual rodeo August 9-10 at 8:00 PM. The rodeo, sponsored by the Tri-County React Club, is sanctioned by the International Rodeo Association (IRA).
