FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvi'n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 60 Paul EIA Is Old, Not New, Worry Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), or swamp fever, is an infectious viral disease of horses, mules, ponies and donkeys. It is characterized by a variety of symptoms, all related to anemia. The recent interest the disease has received from the equine industry has caused some horse owners to assume that EIA is a "new disease", l>but such is not ISSthe case. EIA was first reported in the United States in 1896 and numerous epidemics have been reported through the years. Although once confined to the Gulf-Delta area it is (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Paul E. Hoffman, Equine Section, Large Animal Medicine and Surgery, University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, Athens 30602.)_____________ now widespread and has been reported in all 50 continental United States. A serological survey conducted by the USDA in 1972-73 involving approximately 125,000 horses from throughout the United States showed a 3.3% incidence of infection with a majority of the cases being chronic or inapparent carriers of the virus. The disease is caused by several strains of a very small virus. The virus is readily destroyed by sunlight, boiling and by some disinfectants but within the diseased horse the virus is carried for life regardless of the severity of symptoms. EIA is primarily transmitted by the injection of infective blood. Blood sucking horseflies, mosquitoes and biting insects are usually considered to be the most common transmitters of the infected blood, but contaminated hypodermic needles, surgical instruments, dental floats, stomach tubes, bridle bits and spurs can be a mode of transmission. The disease may also be transmitted "in utero" and via colostrum from mare to foal. Horses clinically ill with the disease are the most potent source of the virus but the virus may be found in any infected horse irrespective of the clinical signs. EIA is usually recognized in one of three forms; acute, subacute or chronic. Two weeks to several months may elapse from the time the virus enters the body until clinical signs appear. In the acute form the disease lasts from 3 to 20 days with fever of 104-108. Severe depression, profound weakness, weight loss, jaundice and frequently swelling of the legs, sheath and belly (Continued On Page 8) Wednesday, July 17, 1974 Number 29 Bark Producers Define Categories The National Bark Producers Association Technical Committee has defined three major categories of bark products. These categories do not necessarily coincide with the types of packaging in present produc- tion. However, they can serve as useful guides to producers and at the same time help the consumer know generally what to expect under various labels. The three categories defined are: category 1 - decorative bark: This category must have particle sizes in excess of one-fourth inch on sides, with cambium and wood particles removed. category 2 - soil conditioner: At least 90% of this product must be one-fourth inch or less in various dimensions for sizing. category 3 - base bark: This category includes any bark product that does not meet requirements of category one or two and has a maximum of 10% wood fiber con- tent. Pine cambium and shredded hardwood bark are included in this product. _______________ Market News Pres. Ralph White of Gainesville has been elected President of the National Market News Association for 1974-75. Over the past year he served as Vice-President of the national organization of market officials and reporters with federal and state governments. ARS Research Pointing Way To Safer Poultry Products With a highly sensitive, accurate procedure which can accredit poultry flocks as free of exposure to salmonella organisms, ARS research is pointing the way to safer poultry products for the consumer. Salmonella infections from poultry rate high among causes of food poisoning in humans. Poultry is the most common carrier of salmonella. Although USDA standards are enforced to protect the consumer against diseases, the new microantiglobulin test (MAG) for detecting salmonella infection in breeding flocks is an important move toward suppression. The MAG test not only identifies flocks actually carrying salmonellae, but also flocks which have been exposed. Technician Alton D. Whit- temore loads centrifuge with microtest plate carriers to wash bacterial cells for the microan- tiglobulin test. __ Inside Pages Letters to Editor ------------2 Recipes -----------------------5 Ag. Calendar -----------------8 What Is ------------.--------a Straight Line --------------------8 Microtesting conserves time and reagents, substances causing chemical reactions by which other substances may be detected. It offers savings in cost and space compared to macrotesting, a conventional method requiring manual handling and individual viewing in test tubes. Employing the use of a purplestained bacterial cell suspension for mixing with serum samples, the adapted microtest reduces the volumes of reagents by three-fourths. Serum is analyzed in small, disposable plastic plates. In the sensitive MAG test, the plates are loaded into centrifuge carriers and centrifugcd for 10 minutes at 900-1500 rpm. The centrifuge is stopped without braking so that the settled cells will not be disturbed. After the extraneous surface fluid is removed, the packed cells are resuspended at numerical intervals in a normal saline solution. Rabbit anti-chicken globulin serum is added and the plates are incubated 37C. tor 18-24 hours. The cheaper and more easily applied microtests are under active application in salmonella testing programs in five states, adding significantly improved surveillance techniques to present methods of control. Efforts Fruitful In Saving Tree Georgia Agricultural Night with the Atlanta Braves on Friday, July 26, 1974 will have a lot of things going including a cow chip throwing contest with Commissioner Irvin and Braves' personalities. A free shopping bag will be given to all the ladies and two bags of groceries will be given away between each inning. All of the commodity queens will be present and introduced. All agricultural organizations, associations, 4-H, FFA and agribusinesses are asked to cooperate. Each organization is being urged to prepare a banner to hang around the stadium to recognize that organization. Pictured above are some of the participants: Jan Brooks, Watermelon Queen, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Carlene MaGinnis, Peach Queen, Ernie Johnson, Braves' Announcer, and Marilyn Brame, Poultry Queen. Through the Albany Garden Club, a marker has been placed at the base of the nation's largest cherry bark oak tree. The tree, measuring 25 feet in circumference, 114 1/2 feet tall with a crown spread of 1 31 feet, was slated to be removed in order to widen State Highway 257, north of Albany. Thanks to the efforts of state officials and the Albany Garden Club the tree was saved. The cherry bark oak tree is one of 22 national 'tree champions listed by the American Forestry Association in Georgia. These along with 106 other species comprise the state list. BEEF IMPORTS The United States is the world's largest beef importer, taking 28 percent of the world's beef exports. Page 2 Dear Editor: I am writing you especially to let you know that my column appearing in the May 15th issue of the MARKET BULLETIN has been highly accepted by 267 letters plus 7 long distance telephone calls. This has been an exciting experience, even 50 letters in one single day which was a record breaker. Never have I received so many letters in this period of time in the 47 years I have worked with rabbits. It seems that almost every city in Georgia was represen ted and in reply to those letters I invited each of them into the Blue Ribbon Rabbit Club. Thus far I have received 22 members of which I feel justly proud. I sincerely wish to thank you for the privilege of writing the column for the dear old Market Bulletin. R. (Origanum Dictamnus) Mythology credits Venus with giving this particular plant to Aeneas during the Trojan Wars to cure his soldiers and heal their wounds. Folklore said that a poultice of Dittany of Crete could remove iron splinters from any wound and cure it immediately. Dittany is a member of the mint family and its leaves are covered with soft, white wooly hair. The flowers are tiny, and pink and hang in hop-like bracts. Dittany is especially attractive in hanging baskets and grows best in full sun and ordinary garden soil. This is a small plant reaching a height of only one foot at maturity. It is usually grown in herb gardens and as a container plant for its or- namental flowers. Dittany is very similar to marjoram in appearance and the two are often confused. In cooking, the two plants can be interchanged with basically the same results. Valera Jessee EIA Old Worry (Continued From Page 1) wall are frequent signs. The acute phase often terminates in death. The subacute and chronic forms are most common. In the subacute disease the signs are similar but less severe and the duration shorter. Affected horses make an apparent recovery that lasts for several weeks or months only to experience a reoccurrence of- the illness often percipitated by physical stress. Many reoccurrences may be experienced before the horse dies or must be destroyed. The chronic form of the disease may follow initial or subsequent acute or subacute attacks of illness. Chronically affected horses appear unthrifty, show a progressive loss of weight, lack stamina, often have intermittent low fever and are weak and lethargic. Frequently they develop soft, doughy swellings (edema) of the legs, sheath and ventral belly wall. Their mucous membranes are pale, reflecting the anemia that exists. A few horses apparently recover and remain free of observable signs for months or years. Such horses still harbor the virus and are asymptomatic carriers. How readily and consistently they infect other horses is unknown and probably highly variable but potentially they are infective for life. One horse, experimentally infected, became acutely ill, recovered and remained perfectly healthy for the remainder of his 23 years of life. Research workers, using blood from that horse were able to infect susceptible horses at anytime until his death. The positive diagnosis of EIA has in the past been extremely difficult and the detection of asymptomatic carriers impossible. In the early '70s a highly accurate serological test (Coggins Test) was developed that will detect the acute, chronic and carrier forms of the disease. Testing and control procedures will be discussed in a subsequent article. BIRD According to a recent 'survey by the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Statistical Reporting Service, Georgia suffers a corn loss, caused by birds, of only 0.0003 bushels per acre. With the 1973 crop of 1,840,000 acfes, Georgia farmers lost only an estimated 552 bushels. Mr. Harry Blanchard, Jr., has asked the MARKET BULLETIN'S help in determining what the above picture old farm implement is. We don't know and Mr. Blanchard has been unable to find out, but he does know it is old and perhaps one of our readers can help him. If so, please let us know and we will pass the information on to him. Aspirin Canning Not Acceptable The proper way to preserve food is by processing in boiling water baths or pressure canners, smoking, pickling, and preserving. Canning with aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid is not acceptable. In the first place, aspirin is a medicine and should not be used freely for family members. If aspirin is used to excess, it may cause gastritis or other difficulties in some people. Secondly, with aspirin, one cannot be assured that food will keep. With the high cost of food today, it is too risky to take a chance of food spoilage. So, forget about the aspirin and use acceptable methods of canning. Salicylic acid is sometimes used in commercial canning for lowering the pH or acidity, but should not be used in homecanning. It would only be a guessing game on the amount to use. CANNING THIS SUMMER? Don't use rusty screw bands. They won't give you a good seal, say home economists. I Straight Line 1 :: ^^ :: Response In the June 5 issue of the MARKET BULLETIN, in the Straight Line section reference is made to Pipsissewa or spotted wintergreen, stating that it could probably be grown inside the home. This is an extremely difficult wildflower to transplant. It is best not to ever disturb it. It is sometimes used as a terrarium plant, but this is not advisable. It has an extremely deep root. It is on the "protected" list of wildflowers in some states and it would be best to advise people to just leave it alone and not attempt to move it. Sincerely, Fred C. Galle, Director Horticulture Department, Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain 31822 LIVESTOCK SALES EVENTS Clip and Save (Published below is a listing of the regularly scheduled livestock sales events submitted to the F.C.M.B.
