FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvm, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 59 Roy G. Holtzchw Conservationists A re Humanitarians November 25 is a very important date to me. Il marks the beginning of the annual meeting of the greatest group of Conservationists in Georgia. On that date, the Georgia Association of Conservation District Supervisors will begin its annual gathering. Some of the men who will attend have spent 35 years with no pay- ment and little recognition f o r doing all they could to make this world better than they found it. They, like all Soil and Walter Conservatjion District Supervisors, are deeply conscious of the damage our material-oriented society inflicts on planet Earth. In recent years, these old-timers and we younger supervisors (with (Our finest columnist this week is Rov Ci. Hollzclaw, President, Georgia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Room 204, 745 Prince Avenue, Athens 30601.)___________________ only 10 or 15 years) have been astounded to find that, in many minds, we aren't considered to be "real" ecologists or environmentalists. We were surprised to find that keeping a few million tons of soil in place (and in use) did not qualify us to fit any modern definition of "ecologist." Equally surprising was the fact that planting several million acres in wildlife food, grass, and trees did not necessarily mean that we really qualified as "environmentalists." And, to go a few steps further, we didn't qualify for either title by sponsoring and assisting in the construction of outdoor classrooms across the state to give youths a firsthand experience with nature's ways. Maybe we should have thrown all our support instead into efforts to save an isolated stream or plant species for a handful of people to use and enjoy. We qualified for neither title by distributing literature on conservation to thousands of grade school children and sending hundreds of teenagers and school teachers to conservation workshops and institutes. Perhaps we should have rallied instead around a banner proclaiming the need to let nature destroy valuable parts of herself in the name of some fuzzy concept of natural beauty. Well, those 15 or 20 million acres we've improved and the thousands of people young and old with a new appreciation for the needs of their world just may not be adequate accomplishments to some. I guess the way we work to help all the land for all the people makes us plain, ordinary humanitarians. That's all. Wednesday, November 14, 1973 Number 46 Seafood Dealers "Peach Gummosis" Poses Problem Reminded To Label For Peach Growers, Researchers All Oysters Properly A new horticulture research project at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture seeks to determine the nature and extent of the "peach gummosis" problem as it relates to the peach industry in central Georgia. Department of Agriculture officials reminded seafood processors and dealers in Georgia, as well as restaurants serving seafood, that all raw oysters must be properly labeled as to source of origin if in a can, and properly tagged if in the shell and shipped in any kind of bag or container. This reminder came after an outbreak of infectious hepatitis in Calhoun, Georgia, last week that was attributed to raw oysters. In addition, all oysters sold for human consumption in Georgia must have been harvested by, licensed commercial fishermen in approved coastal waters and processed in a certified oyster packing house before being sold by licensed seafood dealers only. According to the Department, containers of all oysters shipped in the shell are supposed to be tagged with a special tag, half of which is torn off and kept on file by the seafood dealer making the final sale, and half of which is supposed to be kept by the restaurant or eating establishment serving the oysters. A peach tree showing symptoms of "gummosis", a disease condition affecting especially trees which bear stone or citrus fruits. Gumfilled pockets form within or beneath the bark and release their contents through breaks in the bark or the skin of the trunk, limb, or sometimes the fruit. Proposal For Uniform Dating Of All Dairy Products Slated Horticulture division chairman Dr. C. H. Hendershott heads the three-year project, which will be conducted in cooperation with Dr. Jim Schepers of the College Experiment Station agronomy department at Athens, Dr. Hugh Kirkpatrick of the U. S. Department of Agriculture at Byron, and Dr. E. F. Savage of the horticulture department at the Georgia Experiment Station near Griffin. "Gummosis" is a disease condition affecting especially trees which bear stone or citrus fruits. Gum-filled pockets form within or beneath the bark and release their contents through breaks in the bark or the skin of the trunk, limb, and sometimes the fruit. Preliminary work on the problem indicate that gummosis is not always associated with insects or diseases but in many instances, a disturbance in the normal moisture pattern is found where there is gummosis, often a water table that is unusually high or fluctuating. "It is found principally in low spots in the orchard; in heavy, poorly drained soils; or in orchards subject to overflow," said Hendershott. The new project will have three major objectives: To determine the extent and A regulation requiring that all milk and milk products sold in Georgia be clearly labeled with the shelf-life expiration date is being drawn up for state- wide enforcement, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. ~fj i J fi ~j All milk processors having retail tl6fflSl6r DraiKlS sales in the state are being advised With Dept. Hi Ag that a hearing on the proposed new regulation will be held at the Agriculture Building on November With the advent of increased beef prices, cattle rustling has been on the increase. One of the greatest deterrents to cattle rustling is permanent identification by a registered brand. After you have chosen a.brand and it has been approved and recorded by the Georgia Department of Agriculture (a free service), it must be recorded by the Ordinary of the county in which you live. Application for a brand should be made to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Animal Health Division, 19 Hunter Street, SW. Atlanta 30334. Price Break In Eggs Can Save You Money 21 at 11:30 AM. Interested individuals and firms will be given an opportunity at that time to express their views on the proposal, which would be effective on January 1 . "Actually, this is not a drastic departure from what is now being done on a voluntary basis where the retail sale of many dairy products is concerned," Irvin said. "Shelf-life dating is common among processors but the information is coded and few consumers are able to read it," he added. Under the revision, each container must be clearly marked with the last date on which the item can be sold or offered for sale, listing three letters for the month plus the numeral for the date, or by a numerical series. Thus, June 1 would Eggs come in many different sizes, but how do you know which size is your best buy? Well, you compare the prices of the different sizes and apply the rule of "seven." If there is a seven-cent difference between the small and medium eggs, medium and large eggs, the value is the same. But if there is more than a seven-cent difference, the next smaller size eggs are the better buy. Now, if the price difference is less than seven cents, then the larger size be shown as JUN 1 or 0601. Processors will be required to cer- tify to the Department of Agriculture the maximum shelf-life of each milk product, as well as the calculated life of each product in the hands of the consumer under normal storage conditions. The maximum shelf-life for fluid uncultured milk products would be seven days from the date of packaging under most circumstances. "The state of Florida and the city of Birmingham already have put the eggs are your better buy. (Continued On Page 8) seriousness of the peach gummosis problem in central Georgia. To correlate specific factors such as rainfall, soil temperature, soil porosity, and the presence of oxygen and carbon dioxide of both topsoil and subsoil in gummosis-plagued orchards. This data will be compared with the corresponding facts in orchards without the problem. To correlate variety, rootstock and cultural practices with the gumming problem. Gummosis is believed by many Georgia growers to be one of the causes of tree decline, and successful work in the project might help curtail Georgia losses in bearing trees. Ga. Joins SUSTA To Promote Trade Qeorgia and 13 other regional states have formed the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA), aimed at introducing agricultural products from the 14state region to foreign buyers. The other states are: Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has been named to the five-man governing committee of the Association. Georgia's share of the agricultural export market last year was $207,100,000 while the total of the 14 states comprising the new organization was $3,500,000,000. Humphreys, 854 Davis St., F-6, Gainesville 30501. : Page 7 Humor 'Round The Barn In the bygone days of mules, horses, wagons and buggies, our city had a market place. My uncle raised and bought farm produce to take to market. One market day, he found he had one frizzley hen in the lot he purchased. Frizzley chickens are hard to sell but he took the hen to market anyway in hopes of selling. It had been a hard day and he sold all items except the one frizzley. A very young lady came by to buy a chicken and she asked why the chicken had its feathers wrong side out. My uncle told her that he had so many chickens and they fought so much among themselves that this hen had gotten nervous and excited, causing her feathers to look this way. It was a sale! My uncle quickly drove away and he did not dare to return to the market place the following week for fear someone had told the lady the truth. Mrs. C. H. Smith Route 2, Box 133 Baton Rouge, LA. 70815 It was the coldest day of the year. I had finished milking the cow and made her as comfortable as possible. With visions of a warm fire and hot coffee, I started for the house. Suddenly from around the corner of the barn came a big bull. He had the longest horns and meanest look I had ever seen. The bull was between me and the house, so my only hope was to climb on top of the chicken house, which I quickly did. Shaking from fright and cold, I was rescued after what seemed to me hours, by the community's leading gossip. My neighbors enjoyed many laughs, at my expense, when the word got around that I had been "treed by a bull." Savannah It is impossible for anyone in our Plant Industry to identify cultivated plants from a single leaf. If you could send a small flowering Iwig, we would be happy to attempt its identification again. A camphor tree (Cinnamonum camphora, Ness and Eberm.) is a stout tree with enlarged base, to 40 feet; leaves alternate, ovate-elliptic, acuminate, nor large or very thick with a pair or more of strong veins. No one has trouble identifying an apple. The yellowish-green knot that you pick from a tree may be little more than an inch in diameter, hard as a rock and sour as a lemon but few other fruits are as easily gathered and the tartness and firmness lend themselves to many unique apple dishes. The Iroquois made an applesauce of wild apples and maple in sauce pan over boiling water. If wax crayons are used for color, add one crayon to 2 1/2 pounds of melted wax, stir until crayon is melted and color is even. If using dye, add one or two teaspoons of dry dye powder for each pound of melted paraffin. Remove from boiling water and stir thoroughly for two to three minutes.
