FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 59 Tommy Irvin Ga. Ag Exports Can Be Increased Georgia's share of U. S. agricultural exports was valued at $207.1 million in fiscal year 1973. That is $207.1 million, less handling costs, returned from overseas markets to the farmers of Georgia and through them to the retailers, bankers, fuel dealers and others who serve the needs of the state's agricultural community. It represents a healthy contribution to our economy, and one that should continue to grow, if we seriously want to export and work towards increasing consumption of Georgia foods in other countries. Georgia leads the nation in the production of peanuts and peanuts lead the list of Georgia's source of farm income. And yet, we export only a fraction of this crop each year to foreign markets. In my opinion this market could be tremendously expanded if we educate the people of other nations to enjoy the taste of Georgia peanuts as well as to the uses of this food in their diets as a source of protein. It can also be used as a source of protein in animal feeds abroad. Tobacco is the state's leading export crop, with shipments valued at $59 million. Next in importance is feed grains, at $25.2 million, followed by cotton, worth $20 million on the export market. Fiscal 1973 was an all-time record year for agricultural exports, reaching $12.9 billion nationally. Agriculture is still our nation's largest industry, one of our leading growth industries, and the key to that growth is expanded exports. I am most anxious to see that Georgia farmers get their fair share of this growth and the unlimited (Continued On Page 8) Seedlings Offered To Ga. Landowners At this time every year the Georgia Forestry Commission offers to residents of Georgia the opportunity to purchase one year old seedlings (trees 6-12 inches high) at a very low cost. We have a variety of seedlings from which to choose, a few of which are: Improved Loblolly -- $1.00 per 50, $7.00 per 1,000 Black Walnut -- $2.00 per 50, $10.00 per 1,000 White Oak -- $2.00 per 50, $10.00 per 1,000 If you are interested in purchasing these seedlings contact your local forestry office and request an order blank and complete price list. Hurry! supply is limited. Wednesday, October 24, 1973 Number 43 Irvin Protests Fall Brings Jack Frost, Carolina Leaf Shrub Plantings, Leaves Market Change Contrary to some popular opinion and beliefs shrub plantings can and should be made in the fall months. The main reason is that plants put into the ground early will make some root growth. This increase in roots occurs while the soil is warm and moist. ______ An "illegal and unprecedented" change in flue cured tobacco This increase will better enable plants to resume vigorous growth stabilization corporation by-laws has next spring and will increase the resulted in the opening of chances of withstanding heat and stabilization receiving points in drought next summer. North and South Carolina, Com- missioner Tommy Irvin reported last WATCH FOR FROST week. Flue cured tobacco auction sales are still underway in both states with tobacco selling for more than the government loan price available at the stabilization receiving points. In a telegram to Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, Irvin said such action, which completely bypassed government requirements of 30 days advance notice in the Federal Register, puts government in direct competition with free enterprise auction markets. "The action threatens an orderly marketing system for flue cured tobacco, forces a drop in grower income and is directly opposed to your philosophy that farm products should move to market as freely as (Continued On Page 8) One of the Georgia Department of Agriculture exhibits at the Southeastern Fair this year featured products that are farmed, processed and sold in Georgia. Gilt Show & Sale The Coastal Plain Experiment Station sale barn and arena, Tifton, will be the site for an open gilt show and sale November 28. Entries close November 15. The show and sale is open to all Georgia swine producers. Jack Frost is lurking and waiting to make his presence known over Georgia. As happens each year, he will catch some gardeners off guard and will destroy or damage desirable and valuable plants. If frost hasn't occurred in your area, then you had better move indoors those non-hardy plants such as geraniums, ferns, begonias, coleus, and indoor or house plants such as croton, rubber plant, schefflera, philodendron, pathos and sansevieria. All of these plants are tender and will be burned even by the slightest frost. Fall Gardening Check List (1) Study shrub plantings in garden areas to determine additions or deletions. I am enclosing a picture made of our 13 year old son Mike Bishop who has been gardening for 4 years now and this year he has grown several big, orange beautiful pumpkins in the backyard of his home here in Riverdale. He grew them last year too and gave his relatives and friends one to use as decorations for their home during Halloween. At the present time he has turnip greens, mustard greens and sweet potatoes growing. The Clayton County Extension Office gave him very good information as to his soil needs and ways to combat disease and fungus. He is a member of 4-H and enjoys gardening very much. I replied, "That is what is known as a 'glass' eye". She turned to her husband, the doctor, and said "My, they certainly did a good job, didn't they?". C. Mullins, Unknown Rick and Jack Holdridge, while visiting their uncle on the farm, stood by and watched as he milked the cow. In the fall, leaves "riperr" which causes them to change color and eventually fall to the ground. The "ripening" process be comes evident when the cooler weather of aut umn causes the chloroplasts in the leaves to slow down th eir process of photosyntheses. The cell cavities are le ft, some with crystal and oil globules which present a yellow coloring, and others with great amounts of sugar left in the leaves causing red and purple coloring. Leaves are fragile layers of cam bium, the life-sustaining material that is present in the tree's woody bark. Cambium is withdrawn from the leaves before winter comes causing the leaves to change color and finally fall. Georgia enjoys a wide array of colorful leaf trees. The predominant trees with the colors you might ex pect to find are listed below: American Beech -golden, bronze Ash ----------------------------yellow E I m ------------------ye I low , gold Dogwood -------- red, variegated Sassafras ------------ red, orange Sweet Gum ---------- red, purple Black oak --------yellow, brown Black walnut ----yellow, bronze C h est n u t -------------------- b ro n ze Hickory -------------- yellow, gold Northern red oak -------- dull red Red maple ------ red, variegated Sugar maple -- red, rose, yellow Tu pe lo -------------------------- red White oak ---- red, brown, purple Valera Jessee FARM LAND CORRECTION In last week's (arm land edition, the Market Bulletin staff made an error in the price of the land offered for sale by Mr. G. THE MARKET BULLETIN Wednesday, October 24, 1973 Fertilizer Elements Influence Irvin Protests (Continued From Page 1) Forage Production Of Grass Crops possible without government intervention," Irvin wired Butz. Nitrogen is the fertilizer element that has the most influence on forage production of grass crops. Both winter and summer grass forage crops will respond favorably up to 150 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Hybrid bermudagrass will respond Go. Ag Exports favorably to 200 to 300 pounds of nitrogen. When all factors are con- sidered, nitrogen should be split into at least two equal applications and (Continued From Page 1) maybe three. "The basic purpose for which the stabilization corporation was founded was to provide a market at the government support price level to help farmers sell their crop if prices fell lower than the support price. With Carolina tobacco selling on auction markets at from three to 16 cents per pound above the support price, the federal action just doesn't make sense and sets a precedent that could seriously jeopardize an orderly auction marketing system on the Georgia-Florida belt next season," Irvin insisted. The Commissioner said the opening of stabilization receiving points when regular auctions were underway might result in the free enterprise system of selling tobacco at auction being eliminated entirely. He said it could result in growers and buying companies dealing directly with each other and flue cured tobacco selling at or only slightly above the government loan level. f. In summary use nitrogen period- ically to stimulate and regulate growth. 'Agricultural Calendar When a high rate of nitrogen is applied at one time to grass plants the plants may contain levels of nitrogen high enough to cause nitrate poison or contribute to a grass tetany problem. Phosphorus should be maintained at a medium level on all forage crops. Early growth of annual grasses is greatly reduced on soil with a low level of phosphorus. Phosphorus can be appled any time during the year. Potassium should be maintained at a medium level on all forage crops. Potassium should be applied periodically as needed by the crop. If a high rate of potassium is applied at one time many forage crops take up more potassium than need for optimum growth. A high potassium content in forage crops is one of the many factors that cause grass tetany. When excessive amounts of potassium is taken up by plants during one growth period, a potassium shortage may occur during the next growth period. This is particular true on coastal bermudagrass being harvested for hay. Potassium is utilized most efficiently by providing as needed by plants for the next growth period. Lime should be used to maintain a soil pH of at least 6.0. Lime may be applied any time during the year. Lime containing magnesium should be used on all forage crops. Plant diffident in magnesium is one of many factors that cause grass tetany. Legumes, in addition to providing high quality forage are capable of adding nitrogen to the soil. Legume crops also contain more magnesium than grass crops; therefore, cattle that have legume to graze are less likely to have grass tetany. Crimson clover and arrowleaf clover (varieties amclo and yuchi) provide grazing during late winter and spring. Arrowleaf clover continue to grow into early summer (4 to 6 weeks later than crimson). These crops can add 75 to 100 pounds of nitrogen to the soil. Legumes do not require nitrogen Station, Tifton. Oct. 26-1 PM -- Yorkshire- Hampshire Sale, on the farm. Write for catalog. W. T.
