Agriculture is big business. A healthy, productive, efficient agriculture is essential to a sound national economy and to the wellbeing of every American family. 
The Extension Service of the University of Georgia College of 
Agriculture has a strong agricultural program. It is designed to help farmers produce and market a high quality product in line with consumer demand. Production programs center around field crops, fruit and vegetable crops, poultry, livestock,

forestry and dairy. Food science ana marketing programs assist agribusiness firms to improve their efficiency of operation. 
The Extension approach is unique. County extension agents are located in most of Georgia's counties. These agents are backed up by state and area specialists who provide them with the latest research information available from our Experiment Stations and USDA. Our objective is for every farmer to have access to the latest research information in order to lower his production costs and increase his net income. As a result every Georgia citizen is eating better quality food at a lower relative cost than would be possible otherwise. 
In addition to a strong program for commercial agriculture, the Georgia Extension Service is initiating a program in several counties to work specifically with small farmers. Though most of these farmers do not have the resources to become large commercial farms, with intensive assistance they may improve their operations substantially. 
Agriculture has a close relationship to the environment. The Extension program in the area of natural resources, including soil, water, forestry and wildlife, is designed to contribute to the protection and wise use of these resources. Programs in home and community beautification lend assistance to a quality environment. These programs in agriculture and natural resources are available to urban as well as rural residents. 
There are many agencies and organizations that have made and continue to make outstanding contributions to Georgia's agriculture. The Extension Service endeavors to

Blueberries 
Utilizing the rabbiteye blueberry as a money crop in Georgia was a big idea that started on a small scale a few years ago in Bacon County. Today, under the leadership of the Georgia Blueberry Association in Alma, Georgia is fast becoming the Blueberry Capitol of the World. The association has produced and has ready for the January planting season adequate plants for two hundred and fifty acres. Mature plants are perhaps the top per acre money making crop in the South today. The top photo shows a portion of the 170,000 plus cuttings in the propagation beds at Alma. At right, Manager M. E. Mountain Fair 
Promises Fun 
Rabun County will hold its first annual Tallyho Hunt, November 8 through 11, with huntinf and fishing for the sportsman and planned activities for the family. 
Among the contests held will be hunts for deer, raccoon and opossum, and a big fish contest. There will also be flea markets, an old-fashioned hoedown, wagon train rides and greased pig contests.

Nat'1 4-H Week 
Over 161,000 young people in Georgia are observing National 4-H Week, October 7-13, along with some five and a half million other youths across the nation. 
During the week, Georgia members will carry out the national theme, "4-H Gets It All Together." 
Through 4-H young people communicate and share ideas, build strong friendships, interact and work together to solve problems

Cattle and hog rustling activities were stymied in two Georgia counties last week when arrests were made in Statesboro and Lumpkin, Georgia. 
Three men were arrested on cattle rustling charges as they sought to unload four stolen cows at a Statesboro livestock barn and one man is under a $5,000 bond in Lumpkin charged with the possession of stolen property, 70 hogs and feed missing from the Bradley Co. farms. 
Frank Parker, owner of the sales barn in Bulloch County, became suspicious of three men unloading 
cattle from a U-Haul and investigation revealed the cows were stolen from R. O. Perkins of Emmanuel County. 
Sheriff Bob Mitchell of Stewart County said that a station wagon parked at the Bradley farms resulted 
in an investigation and the location of about $3,700 worth of swine. The stolen hogs had their ears cut, presumably to rid them of the 
Bradley farm identifying mark. Commissioner of Agriculture 
Tommy Irvin said inspectors of the Department of Agriculture are continuing to cooperate with the law en- 
forcement officials in these and other counties and to help in the crack down on livestock rustling. 
Department inspectors are stopping trucks, hauling livestock along the highways requesting proof of ownership and are checking sales barns regularly.

Because of the expected shortage of fertilizer and lime next spring, many growers may utilize fall and winter applications of phosphorus, potassium, and lime to supply the needs for the 1974 soybean crop. Since prospects are excellent for good prices for soybeans throughout 1974 (some experts predict that soybeans will average $5.50 per bushel), now is the time to insure that soil fertility is not a limiting factor in soybean production.

3/4 Ib. hamburger 1/2 cup diced onion 3 Tbsp. fat 4 cups coarsely chopped 
cabbage 
 
1/4 cup flour 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. paprika 1/2 tsp. celery seed 1 cup milk (or more) 
 
Heat fat in skillet; add meat and onions. Stir until meat is gray and begins to brown. Add cabbage and fry lightly. 
Sprinkle flour, salt, paprika and celery seed over mixture; stir into mixture. Pour in milk, cover and simmer 15 to 20 minutes, or until cabbage is done.

(15 oz.) 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup butter or

1/4 cup flour 1 cup pecans 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup light brown sugar 
 
Melt butter in a long baking dish. Mix sugar, flour and nuts. Add vanilla to milk and eggs. Mix in dry ingredients. Pour in butter. Mix and return all to but tered pan or dish and bake in a slow oven (225 to 250 degrees) until well done. About 30 minutes. Serve with ice cream or cool whip.

Chickweed is found practically all over the world. Some varieties have even established themselves in the Arctic Circle. Geological sur veys have proven that chickweed survived the Glacier Age when many plants lost their original iden tity or became extinct. All together there are 22 varieties of chickweed, many of which grow in Georgia. 
Stellaria media is known as com mon chickweed. It grows ap proximately 4 to 16 inches tall, has translucent stems and a single line of fine hairs which run up the stem to the joint. Its name is derived from the description of the tiny, whitestar-shaped flowers; media means that it is the middle-sized member of the large family Caryophyllaceae. 
Chickweed lives through the win ter and reseeds itself in the spring. It has a fragile root system and delicate stems and leaves and ap pears to be too tender to last through freezing winter weather. But it does and does so with vigor! 
This miserable weed which sneaks into the best maintained gardens does have a few redeeming properties, however, ac cording to herbalists. It is one of the few plants which possess a high copper content, thus making it a valuable source of minerals for man and animals. 
Chickweed may be eaten as a vegetable by washing, placing in a pan without shaking off the water, adding a little butter, seasoning, a few chopped green onions and cooking slowly to avoid burning. Drain and serve hot. 
As a remedy for a troubled stomach or relief from constipation gather a handful of plants, wash and pour ten ounces of boiling water over them. Add a little lemon or orange peel for flavoring and drink this amount daily in several small doses. 
Old fashion poultices made by boiling the herbs in a cheesecloth are supposed to cure most ab scesses and carbuncles.

Fertilization

should always be based on soil test results. A fertility program based on soil test results can prevent unwise use of fertilizer. 
Research has shown that soybeans do not respond to applied fertilizer when soils test high in P and K. Growers who have achieved this high level of fertility on their farms may grow one crop of soybeans on these soils without additional fertilizer applications. 
Many growers in the state use soybeans in a double-cropping system with small grains. Sufficient fertilizer can be applied this fall, prior to planting small grains, to suffice both for the small grain crop and the following soybean crop. Since soybeans usually respond better to residual fertilizer than they do to direct applications, fall fertilization is ideal for a double cropping system. 
LIME No fertilization program is complete unless the soil pH is maintained at adequate levels. Since soybeans are a legume, the soil pH should be maintained between 6.0 and 6.5 for optimum production. Lime frequently requires from 3 to 6 months to neutralize soil acidity; therefore, application is most ef-. fective when applied in the fall preceeding the cropping year. The use of Dolomitic limestone will insure that sufficient amounts of calcium and magnesium are supplied to meet the soybean's requirements. Growing soybeans on adequately limed soils will permit the beans to make maximum use of applied fertilizer. 
"NEW GROUND" SOILS The expected increased acreage of soybeans will undoubtedly result in many acres of new-ground soybeans. In past years, many crop failures have resulted on new-ground soils because of inadequate levels of phosphorus and low pH. Newground soils in Georgia frequently require an application of 500 pounds of superphosphate and two tons of lime prior to planting of soybeans. Soil tests should be utilized as a guide for all new-ground fertilization programs. Since soybeans respond to residual fertilizer, fall and winter application of phosphorus and potassium and lime usually fit well into a farming program. Nitrogen fertilizer is not needed if soybeans are properly innoculated and grown on well-limed soils. Soil pH should be from 6.0 to 6.5 and phosphorus and potassium should be maintained at medium to high soil test levels. When using a double-cropping system, apply sufficient fertilizer to supply nutrient needs of both the small grain and the soybean crop.

Could you please tell me what this insect is. I found several on my weeping willow tree and most of the leaves had been stripped.

Our Plant Division has identified the insect as the tentacled prominent caterpillar. As it is only known to feed on elms in this area, we doubt that these insects were doing the damage you described to your weeping willow. 
*** I would like to know if you can put vegetable seeds, left over from spring, in a deep freezer and keep until next spring for planting. I have heard of this being done but wonder how effective it is.

The storage of seed in a deep freezer is not a recognized method of storing seed, but if the moisture content is very low in the seed, they can be stored in a freezer without damaging them. Many people do store small quantities of seed in their freezer. If you do decide to store in this manner, they should be placed in a sealed glass jar or heavy plastic bag to prevent moisture from get ting to the seed. Also, it is not necessary to use an insecticide to control storage insects.
