FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 59 fancy B. Pre*f It's Summer Time & Living Is Easy Now that school is out is your family ready for a long summer? Perhaps that is not a fair question. A line from a popular musical says, "Summer time and the living is easy!!" If you haven't thought of summer time as easy perhaps you haven't been in touch with your county Extension home economist. In that case, now is a good time to give her a phone call. There are local Extension offices in 156^ of Georgia's 159 * "1 counties. Most of the counties employ at least one home economist. Urban counties may employ five or six. All Extension offices ha- lve at least one I telephone. The office may be listed as the University of Georgia Extension Service or County Extension Agent. All or our home economists have special training in working with families, especially with the (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Nancy B. Preas, Assistant Director, Home Economics, Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia, Athens 30601.)_______ homemaker. They are anxious to help put more living in our lives. As you get ready for summer be sure to request the newsletter your home economist produces each month, if you are not already on her mailing list. Another timely item for those who have children is a request for copies of a s'eries of pamphlets entitled, "Remembering ... Activities With Children." Request circular FL-1 629, 630, 631, 632. Are your children participating in 4-H Club work? If so, they may already have most of their summer planned as 4-H offers many activities and opportunities throughout the year for young people. Call your home economist now and request a schedule of classes and short courses offered this summer. You face homemaking decisions every day what to buy, how to get the most for your money, how to care for the children, how to do everything you have to do when there isn't enough time. If there is not a course offered that answers your need, invite neighbors and friends with similar interests to request the county Extension home economist to schedule a special class for your neighborhood. Our home economists have the most reliable facts available to help you make your decisions wisely. Our facts are based on practical experience and the best scientific know-how available. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: I wanted to share with your readers my hobby of collecting recipes and flower articles from the MARKET BULLETIN. Some years ago a lady from Kennesaw, Georgia, Mrs. Cliff Booth wrote a poem called the Flowery Wedding. I used this poem and seed catalogs to get the flower pictures and you should see what I did with each line. I just think its lovely. Each line I would find a colored picture to match and with a pen write the line then put the flower beside it. I found all the flowers and shrubs except for a few and it's great fun to look for the pictures. I would like nothing better than be able to have film and some one to take me into them there mountains of North Georgia to film all the shrubs and 'flowers I wanted, to be able to rush up there just when the Granser Grey Beard was in bloom at its best. Don't know if there would be any better way to live than that, think that would be about as close to Heaven as one could ask In this world. I really enjoy keeping the What Is columns and searching for small pictures to match them and my scrapbook means so much to me. CALL EXTENSION There are local Extension offices in 156 of Georgia's 159 counties. In most cases the Extension telephone number is listed under the specific county government. If you cannot find your local Extension number, call the central number for the County Government. Page 7 I Straight Line ( :: ^^ In the enclosed container I am sending a pest that I need help to rid from my garden, orchard and yard. Over the past several years I have added sawdust, manure and leaves to enrich the area and now find that almost anything that grows, especially root or bulb type plants and flowers, are ruined by this insect. Please advise what I can use to destroy them and still be able to garden the area. J. H., Toccoa Millipedes is the identification given by our Entomology Division. These insects are attracted to leaf and pine straw areas which are rather damp; they are inevitably worse during a rainy season. We suggest that you use a 5% Sevin dust mixture in the leaf and pine straw areas for several ap- plications to rid a large population of the pests. Gardening after application of Sevin dust is acceptable. As a matter of fact, it is used quite often in gardens. **** Is it safe to use the pelleted peanut and strychnine (.5%) mix- ture in a vegetable garden for control of pine mice and moles? Can vegetables (root or vine) pick up this poison? M. B., Dahlonega The peanut and strychnine mixture you referred to should present no problem when used for control of mice and moles and would not be absorbed by the vegetables. However, because of the toxicity of the material to other animals, you should take all precautions to see that the material is placed where it could not be consumed by other domestic animals or small children. **** What is the life expectancy of industrial treated pine fence posts as compared with locust, white oak, cherry, cedar and other possible suitable posts? C. M., Clarkesville The Forestry people advise that properly treated southern pine posts, of sufficient size to withstand mechanical breakage, will last 25 to 30 years or more. Black locust posts were still serviceable after 15 years in some experiments by the U. S. Forest Service. It is difficult to say how long locust will last as these posts will be subject to more variation than treated pine. Cherry, cedar and oak of post size do not com- pare with treated pine. * * * * I would like to know the cause and preventions of pink eye in cattle. I have this problem with my herds almost every summer to some extent. W. J., Senoia Pink eye is caused by a bacterial infection in the eye. It is spread from one animal to another by face flies. The fly will carry fluid from one cow's eye to another one and this is the way the infection is spread. There are several sprays and powders which can be used to treat this condition. We suggest that you contact your local veterinarian to get the proper medication. Spraying the cows regularly to keep down the fly population will aid in preventing this con- dition in your herd. SMART SHOPPER AGRICULTURAL MARKETING SERVICE U.S. DEPARTMENT Of AGRICULTURE WASHINGTON, B.C. 20250 AMS-541-15 Page 8 Garlic is a hardy bulbous plant with narrow leaves about 6 to 12 in ches high. It belongs to the Lily family and like its first cousin the onion, the edible bulb of the plant grows underground. The bulb is made up of small bulblets called cloves which are separately wrap ped in thin papery coats. Garlic is widely cultivated in tem perate and hot climates for its usefulness in cooking as well as its remedial qualities which are said to cure everything from toothache to love sickness. Also, as most people know, those who fear vampires, demons or evil spirits wear garlic necklaces. These people also don't have many friends. Growing your own garlic is quite simple. Garlic is multiplied by separating the cloves and planting each. The cloves should be planted in the early spring, one inch deep and about eight inches apart. When the leaves turn yellow or begin to collapse the bulbs should be pulled, thoroughly dried in the sun for several days and then hung in an airy dry place until ready for use. Valera Jessee Home Canning (Continued From Page 1) ned quarts. The same quantity of canned snap beans purchased at a grocery costs twice as much. The same principle applies to canning. Ketchup canned at home can be prepared from small, broken tomatoes. The finished product is more economical, and probably better tasting, than bottled ketchups. Look at pickled okra. At current grocery store prices, you're likely to pay two to three cents a pod for commercially prepared okra quite a contrast to buying fresh okra by the bushel and pickling your own. The same goes for jellies, jams, marmalades and preserves. A good point to remember in canning them is to compare prices of sugar. Look at the cost of five pound bags, and compare the price with larger, ten pound quantities. If you're pickling, do the same for salt and vinegar. Large quantities usually cost less than smaller ones. Finally, keep in mind that canning and pickling skills aren't special talents guarded by the pros. The methods are easy to learn. What's more, canning can become a pleasant pastime. There's probably no greater feeling of accomplishment than greeting a full pantry at summer's end tallying the savings at year's end. Many gardeners transplant soon after the flowering period has ended. Dividing Plants Vigorous varieties respond to division every four to five years. If allowed to remain longer, the vigor of the clump may be reduced due to competition. Considerable force is usually necessary to pull old clumps apart. Cut back the foliage to eight to 10 inches. It is not necessary to cut back the roots. Do not be concerned if some varieties have enlarged roots, since this is a varietal characteristic. Planting Before planting, work the soil into a good friable condition to a depth of about 12 inches. Mix organic matter with the soil removed from the hole. Mound a portion of the soil mixture in the bottom of the hole. Set the plant with the roots well spread over the ridge. New plants are set about as deep as they grew originally. The original depth can be determined by the white leaf base, which indicates the parts that were underground. A safe rule is to set the plant so that the point where roots and foliage meet is no deeper than one inch below the surface of the soil. Mulching Mulching is a very desirable practice in daylily culture. Its principal advantage is that during the summer months it retains moisture and discourages weeds. A number of materials can be used successfully, including pine straw, sawdust, pine bark, wood shavings and chips, decomposed leaves, and decomposed grass clippings. Watering Watering is not generally necessary except just before or during the flowering period. If natural rainfall is scarce during this time, flower quality will be improved considerably by thorough soaking to a depth of six to 10 inches once each week. Fertilization Daylilies do much better when fertilized each year even though they may flower for years without fertilization under some conditions. They respond to a fertilizer analysis high in phosphorus and potash, with only a moderate amount of nitrogen. The use of high rates of nitrogen alone may result in lush growth and few flowers. A 5-10-15 analysis is good. Other analyses that fit the above requirements include 6-12-12 and 5-10-10. The first application is made early in the spring when growth begins. The second application is made around the time the first sign of flower buds is noticed.
