Homeowners Beware 
"Human Termite" 
The termite season is getting underway and with its beginning Georgia is usually invaded by a number of "human termites" who prey on unsuspecting homeowners. 
Virtually every spring we receive reports about fraudulent 
termite exterminators who move into an area with their high powered sales talks, convince homeowners that they need termite protection then take off with money in their pocket and without performing any service to the unsuspecting person they have bilked. Unfortunately those persons who fall prey to these fly-by-night exterminators are generally older persons or widows who can not afford to suffer such financial loss. We have had reports in which the amount of money abscounded with often represents the innocent victims entire savings. The public should be on guard against such unscrupulous persons. Under state law all - termite exterminators or pest control firms in Georgia are required to be licensed by the State Department of Agriculture and all persons involved in such business must carry proper identification as well as do business in clearly marked vehicles. There are more than 400 licensed pest control businesses in Georgia and the vast majority of them are reliable organizations whose personnel have passed written examinations as proof of their knowledge and ability. Any Georgian dealing with or needing the services of a professional exterminator should deal with a known, local company and should demand proof of identification before agreeing to or contracting for termite or other insect control in the home. In the meantime to strengthen our service to the homeowner and consumer I have expanded our entomology inspection force to eight inspectors scatterd over the state who will follow up on the work of exterminating companies in their particular areas to insure that all such businesses meet minimum standards of performance in serving the public. We expect to inspect more than 3,000 homes in Georgia this year in spot checking the work of the professionals and when we discover negligence or lack of proper work in carrying out an extermination job we will require that they go back and do the job right. This is just another consumer protection of the Georgia Department of Agriculture which we feel serves a real need in protecting the interest of Georgia citizens.

Georgia Working 
At Cholera Free 
Georgia moved, the first of this month, into the final three month stage of the hog cholera eradication program before the state can reclaim its "free" status. 
U.S.D.A. announced that Georgia has once again moved into Phase Four of the national eradication program after losing its cholera free status with an outbreak of hog cholera in April of 1972. 
If the state can prevent any further occurrence of cholera for three months, until June 1, Georgia will again be declared free of hog cholera. 
One In Twenty-Two 
Still Lives On Farm 
The population's "down on the farm." Farm dwellers dwindled from 9.7 million in April 1970 to 9.4 million in April 1971, continuing a longtime downward trend. 
Since 1960, the farm population has declined by about two-fifths an average annual decline of 4.6 percent. In 1920 about one person in three lived on farms. 
In 1971 only one person in 22, or 4.6 percent of the total population resided on farms. 
Rye Field Day Held In Tifton 
The Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton, along with the Experiment Station in Beltsville, Md., has for the past year been growing out several hundred rye and triticale (wheat x rye) samples to test for trueness to variety, proper labeling and possible misbranding. This project has been under the leadership and supervision of Dr. Darrell D. Morey, Agronomist and small grain specialist. 
On March 27, a National Rye Observation Field Day will be held at Tifton to observe the results of these plantings. 
GEORGIA SETS PACE 
In 1955 through 1957, the Georgia Department of Agriculture collected several hundred samples of rye which were planted at the Tifton Experiment Station for testing. At that time, Georgia was a dumping ground for unadapted and poor rye seed from northern states. 
After three years of testing and publicity, seed growers, processors and farmers came to know and appreciate good rye seed stocks. 
Since that time, Georgia has become a leader in the use of rye for grazing and other uses due chiefly to the growing of adapted southern varieties such as Wrens Abruzzi, Athens Abruzzi, Weser, Explorer, McNair Vitagraze and Pennington Wintergrazer 70.

only be had by hard work and proper management. The first step in establishing a lawn is to decide how much time and money you are going to be willing to spend on maintenance. Then select a grass that is adapted to the area where it is to be grown. 
 
SOIL PREPARATION

False Seed Claims 
Spring will bring birds back to their nests and home gardeners back out in their yards. Garden enthusiasts looking for the best buys should carefully study advertising claims made in seed catalogs and gardening magazines. 
The Seed Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture warns consumers to beware of seemingly exaggerated or misleading claims. 
False and misleading advertising of seeds that are disseminated in interstate commerce or through the U. S. mail whether it is pictorial, written or broadcast is a violation of the Federal Seed Act. 
Be suspicious of advertising that seems exaggerated or unrealistic, and obtain information regarding unfamiliar seed from your county agent or a state agricultural experiment station. 
 
The lawn area should be plowed and pulverized to a depth of 6 inches then raked to remove all rocks, roots and other foreign matter. Fertilizer and lime where needed should be incorporated into the soil during plowing for all grasses (other than centipede). About 50 pounds of lime and 20 to 25 pounds of fertilizer such as a 10-10-10 should be applied per 1000 square feet of lawn area. 
TALL FESCUE 
The tall fescues (varieties generally available are Kentucky 31, Alta, Kenwell) provide a coarse textured evergreen lawn that can be grown in shade or sun. This grass is best suited to the northern 1/3 of Georgia. Seeding should be done in September or October; however, as a second choice seed from March 15 to April1 30, remembering that Spring seeded fescue will have a shallow root system when hot dry weather occurs in the summer and therefore requires more watering than fall seeding. 
Tall fescue is a bunch type grass and a thick stand must be established

Will you please publish the minimum weights required per dozen for eggs sold as small, medium, large, extra large and jumbo eggs? Having raised my own chickens, both large and small breeds, for most of my life, it seems to me that the eggs I buy now are very small for the grade I pay for. Not long ago I purchased some "medium" which looked like bantam eggs. Do the weights include cartons?

The poultry man, "cackles", advised that jumbo eggs must have a 
 
minimum weight of 30 ounces per dozen, extra large, 27 ounces per 
 
dozen, large, 24 ounces per dozen, medium, 21 ounces per dozen, and 
 
small, 18 ounces per dozen. The weights given are net weights. The car- 
 
ton is not included in the net weight as their sizes and types vary so 
 
much.

We have very little information on the banana tree as it is a tropical fruit. We do not have sufficient growing time in our seasons, plus our winter temperatures would kill the roots. Bananas grow in a frost free climate. We mailed you the only sources of this information. Hope it helps.

GRAPE FIZZ Yield: Five 12-oz servings 
 
1 pt. vanilla ice cream, softened 
3 cups milk 3 btls. (7-oz. each) 
ginger ale, chilled 
 
3/4 cup (6-oz. can) frozen concentrated grape juice, thawed 
Vanilla ice cream 
 
In large mixing bowl while beating 1 pint ice cream, blend in grape juice; gradually blend in milk. To serve: into each glass pour 1 cup grape mixture and add 1/2 cup ginger ale. mixing well; top with scoop of ice cream. Serve immediately. 
 
BAKED MACARONI LOAF 
 
1 cup elbow macaroni 
 
1/4 cup chopped pimento 
 
3 Tbls. butter 
 
3 Tbls. minced parsley 
 
11/4 cups milk 
 
1 1/2 tsp. onion salt 
 
1 cup soft bread crumbs 1/8 tsp. pepper 
 
3 eggs, slightly beaten 
 
2 cups (8-oz.) shredded 
 
Cheddar cheese 
 
Cook macaroni according to package directions, omitting 
 
salt; drain. In a small saucepan melt butter; stir in 
 
milk and scald. In a large bowl place bread crumbs; pour on 
 
milk. Add macaroni, eggs, cheese, pimento, parsley, onion 
 
salt and pepper. Stir lightly to blend. Pour into baking dish (1 
 
1/2 quart, buttered). Bake 50-60 minutes or until golden 
 
brown in a 325 degree oven.

RICH 'BEANS A bushel of soybeans will produce 48 pounds of high protein soybean meal and about 10 pounds of oil. William Segars, Extension Service agronomist, says that 'beans supply about 75 percent of all the feed protein, and about 60 percent of all the vegetable oil, produced in the U.S. 
4-H WINNERS During 1972, about 200,000 Four-H boys and girls received recognition for achievement in 4-H events. About one out of seventeen 4-H'ers throughout the nation received an award during the year. 
FOOD STAMP LAW It is against the law to sell food stamps or give them away, according to food specialists at the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. Using food stamps to pay back bills is also a violation punishable by law. 
4-H GIRLS PREVAIL There are no cries about male chauvinism in the 4-H organization. Four-H gals have been libereated for some time, with females outnumbering males 62 to 38 on a nationwide scale. Approximately four million boys and girls are enrolled in the U.S. 4-H program.

see-through press cloth, pressing ham and a seam roll are "musts," advises Margie Mclntyre, clothing specialist with the University of Georgia Extension Service. All of these pressing tools, used properly, lend an authentic professional quality to homesewn garments.

The coconut tree and its edible fruit are considered by many to be nature's most complete invention for the sustenance of man. According to the Wise Encyclopedia of Cookery, "He who plants a coconut tree plants vessels and clothing, foods and drink, a habitation for himself and a heritage for his children." 
The coconut yields not only coconuts and coconut milk but also a vegetable, the cabbage palm, made from the tender young terminal buds; the sap from the tree produces many useful liquids as well as a vinegar. The leaves are indispensable in thatching your cottage roof, making mats, curtains, hats and baskets. The wood is very durable and used in building furniture as well as houses. Fibers of coconut husk are used to stuff mattresses; the roots are ground up and used as tea and coffee; and island table china started with coconut shells. 
One important feature of the coconut's personality that is not widely known is its value as a medicine. Coconuts are used for intestinal complaints, coughs, poultices, as well as an antiseptic lotion for skin wounds. The islanders also use coconut juice as a mouth wash and gargle and make toothpowder from coconut roots that have been ground and roasted. 
The thick shell which protects the coconut is much easier to remove than it appears. Tap three soft areas at the top of the shell with an ice pick; pour out coconut water (this is not the milk coconut milk is the milkly liquid that can be pressed from the coconut meat.); tap the coconut gently all the way around as you revolve it in your hand; by tapping lightly the shell cracks and falls off, leaving only the meat. 
Coconuts are grown primarily in the East and West Indies, and Asia. They require a frost-free and humid climate and in the U.S. only southern Florida is condusive to their culture. 
Nutritionally coconuts are primarily carbohydrates and fat. They do contain, however, protein, calcium, iron and vitamins.

Rye Field Day

each grew out 250 samples as a part of the national testing. Results showed many mixed lots and much misbranding of rye varieties. 
Nearly 43 percent of all Elbon samples, 36% of Balbo and 8% of Wrens Abruzzi samples were judged to be misbranded as to variety. 
This year, more than 500 rye arid triticale samples were planted on the Agronomy Farm at Tifton, about 40% of them taken by Georgia Department of Agriculture seed inspectors. 
These plots are now showing differences and some misbranding is evident. Everyone is invited to attend the field day in Tifton to observe first hand the results of the national tests.

Therefore, seeding should be done at the rate of 20 pounds per 1000 square feet with seed that is at least 98% pure seed and 85% germination and free of noxious weed seed. After seed have been applied the area should be raked and rolled with a roller to firm the soil around the seed and provide a smooth surface. A light mulch of weed free straw should be applied after rolling. 
On areas where you have heavy shade it would be well to use red fescue since this particular grass will grow better in the shade than tall 
 
Though often mistaken for a 24hour virus because of similar symptoms headache, fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting salmonellosis is an infection of the stomach and intestines that is caused by salmonella germs which are sometimes present in such foods as fresh poultry, meat and fish. 
Salmonellosis can also be transmitted from pets, such as turtles, to humans. Your children can catch the virus by playing with someone's pet turtle. 
The disease generally lasts from one to five days. Although it usually is not fatal, it can be dangerous to the very young, the very old and people already weakened by illness.

To curb the possible spread of salmonella germs at home, the 
following precautions are recommended: 
Some uncooked poultry meat and seafood may contain salmonella germs. Since thorough cooking kills these germs, cook foods in the home at 155 degrees (F). Obviously, avoid eating raw fish, meat, poultry or eggs. 
Although cooking kills salmonella germs, using the same platters and utensils before and after cooking can recontaminate the food with salmonella.

FERTILIZING ESTABLISHED LAWNS

All lawns should be fertilized in the spring before the growing season begins with a complete mixed fertilizer and all grasses except centipede should be fertilized 
periodically during the growing season. 
A fertilization practice that is satisfactory on most lawns is to apply 20 to 25 pounds of a 10-10-10 or 
similar analysis per 1000 square feet of lawn in March then apply nitrogen during the growing season as needed to maintain a good green color in the grass. Usually two to four applications of ammonium nitrate at a rate of five pounds per 1000 square feet applied at intervals of six to eight weeks will be satisfactdry. Nitrate of soda can be applied at rates of ten pounds per 1000 square feet of lawn. In September again apply a complete mixed fertilizer. 
Most lawns in Georgia need lime 
for growing fescue. Without a soil 
test a good rule to follow is to apply 50 pounds of lime per 1000 square 
feet of lawn every three years. Centipede can be fertilized in 
early spring with one application of ten pounds of 10-10-10 per 1000 
square feet of lawn but never apply lime to centipede and never fertilize late in the summer. The application of fertilizer and a pre-emergence 
herbicide will do much toward providing a beautiful weed free lawn. A pre-emergence herbicide can be 
applied in March and early April at the manufacturers recommended rate to control crab grass and other 
summer weeds. Do not apply pre-emergence her- 
bicides to newly seeded lawns or areas that are to be seeded in three 
or four months but you can apply them in the spring on established lawns that will be over-seeded in September. Always use a lawnmower with a sharp blade when mowing and do not mow cool season grasses too low in hot summer mon- 
ths. (Coming next week: Other grasses

When defrosting meat in the refrigerator, keep it away from all 
other food and preferably in the meat keeper. Blood from raw poultry and meat can be contaminated with salmonella and can, in turn, contaminate any foods with which it 
comes in contact. After cooking, do not allow meat 
or poultry to stand a long time at room temperature. Bacteria grow well under these conditions, and can 
recontaminate the food. 
 
Be on guard for the symptoms of 
 
salmonella infection in pets. If a pet 
 
is having stomach problems, keep its 
 
feeding dishes, toys, bedding and 
 
other similar items away from sour- 
 
ces in contact with the family's food, 
 
such as the kitchen sink, drain board 
 
and food service utensils. Hands

dling a sick pet. 
 
Keep children away from certain

turtles, baby chicks and 
 
ducklings that health authorities
