FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 59 John L. Cope GPFES Dedicated To Serving Others Back in 1951 a group of people got together and organized the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society. They were made up of fertilizer people and folks from the College of Agriculture. This original group decided their number one objective would be to gather, organize, promote and spread information about all forms of plant nutrients and their applications to all kinds of crops. They were determined that this information would be practical, useful . . . down to earth. It was also decided that the latest word about better cultural practices (Our guest columnist this week is John L. Cope, President, Georgia Plant Food Educational Society, P. O. Box 246, Savannah 31402.) would be thrown in anything in fact, that would make for better crop production and more farm income. This way they would be helping other people and themselves at the same time. THE BEST INFORMATION This information had to be on the up and up. So, it was collected from unbiased and reliable sources Experiment Stations, USDA, Cooperative Extension Service, and other land grant colleges. These organizations not only provided the information, they offered their personnel and facilities in helping reach the people who wanted, needed, and could use the information the farmers of Georgia. But the Plant Food Society didn't want to reach just farmers. They also wanted to communicate with each other. So, an educational service was provided for the members. This group has kept each other informed through annual meetings, workshops, field days, What and Why Newsletters, and a lot of other opportunities that wouldn't have been available without the Society. The GPFES didn't discover any new principle here; they just realized anew an old principle which has been around for a long, long time. That is, the way to get more of the things desired is to produce more of the things other people want. They found themselves promoting agricultural programs and cooperating with all kinds of agricultural agencies especially the various divisions of the College of Agriculture. In fact, during the last 20 years GPFES has provided more than $80,000 to the College of Agriculture to help with research and educational programs._______ DON'T FORGET!! 25 word limit on all notices, including name and address. Wednesday, March 7, 1973, Number 10 Irvin Challenges Big Milk Outlets To Stop Rebates "Stop the rebate practice before you force our dairy farmers out of business entirely and are left without enough milk for your customers," Commis'sioner Tommy Irvin challenged large milk outlets last week. Irvin explained that for many years in Georgia, the processors have had to give substantial rebates to large milk outlets in order to get their particular brand of milk placed in these facilities. This practice has contributed to the price of milk in many areas of the state being higher to the consumer than in most of the bordering states. As a result of the rebate practice, the consumer is paying more and the dairy farmer is getting less, to the point that this price squeeze is for- Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin, assisted Miss Gail Peters, Georgia Peach Queen, and Governor Jimmy Carter recently when peach trees were planted on the Capitol lawn. Quite a few trees were badly cing many of the dairy farmers out of business. In addition, the smaller retail damaged on the lawn during the recent ice storm. When plans were being made to replace the trees, it was noticed that there had never been any stores and outlets that do not participate in the rebate practice are put Georgia peach trees on the Capitol lawn. Plans were made accordingly and in an unfair position competitively. the Capitol lawn now has 16 lovely peach trees growing there. Ga. The year marked an all-time high tally for peanuts with preliminary crop value estimates of $198 million. This compares with a $52 million crop in 1960 and a $171.4 million Before Last Frost Professional agricultural workers generally discourage burning crop residue, but there is one exception Coastal Bermudagrass. Page 8 THE MARKET BULLETIN A STEER'S NOT ALL STEAK... an important factor in the price you pay for beef Barley is one of the oldest of the cultivated cereals in the world. It was used as a basic food among the Lake Dwellers of Switzerland about 3,000 years ago; was grown in China as early as 2000 B.C. and has been mentioned numerous times throughout history. The Bible refers to barley as one of the main crops destroyed in the plagues of Egypt; Ceres, the god dess of grain, was said to have bits of barley plaited in her hair. Ac cording to the Greeks and Romans, barley was the most ancient food of mankind. It's original home is thought to be Asia where it grows wild today. It grows in both warm and cold climates and has a wider range of distribution than any other cereal grain. Its adaptability is due to its short growing season which allows it to be grown at high altitudes all the way up to the shores of the Arc tic Ocean. Barley is very high in nutritive value, especially carbohydrates and proteins. Until the 16th century it was the main source of bread, though its deficiency in gluten makes it a poor bread flour. Barley has a delicious nutty flavor and is a good side dish with meats. Barley cereal is well-known as a baby food and is more easily found in food stores than the. polished pearl or scotch barley. Often only health food stores and specialty stores sell the cereal which was once a mainstay for civilizations. Barley is grown in Georgia but on a very small scale. The Georgia Farm Report indicates that prospec tive plantings in 1973 will be only about 15,000 acres of barley com pared to 1,750,000 acres of corn, 210,000 acres oats and 165,000 wheat. The barley that is grown in Georgia is used primarily as a livestock feed as there are no barley processors in the state. Valera Jessee STOP KUDZU Once the kudzu vine gets a start in an area it goes on the rampage, choking out all other vegetation. What to do about it? University of Georgia Extension agronomists first recommend mechnical means to eliminate it bush hog, disc, plow or hoe. If herbicides are employed, they should not be used around the home or garden, caution the Extension specialists. EATING HABITS Eating habits of American teenagers have been called "a dietary disaster area." Extension nutrition specialists say teen diets consist mostly of cookies, potato chips, skipped meals, greasy hamburgers, soft drinks and donuts. They add that nearly one-fourth of a teen's daily diet comes from snacks. Of this, only a very small amount can be called steak. It takes approximately two years to grow the steak or roast you have for dinner, plus 2,500 pounds of grain, 450 pounds of protein sup plement and 12,300 pounds of hay, silage and pasture and tremendous substantial investments in labor and capital before a steer is feedlot-finished and ready for ROUND 137.8 Ibs (22.4% of total carcass) Top round (inside) Bottom round (outside) Tip Stew Rump Kabobs or cubes Ground beef Fat and bone 21.0 20.3 13.1 8.3 4.8 2.1 14.2 54.0 TOTAL 83.8 Ibs 54.0 Ibs SUMMARY (1000 fb choice steer) Dresses out 61.5% 61 S Ibs Less fat, bone and loss 183 Ibs Saleable beef 437 Ibs market of 1,000 pounds. This 1,000 pound steer produces an approximate 615 pound car cass which the packer sells to a retailer who trims away 183 pounds of fat, bone and waste, en ding up with only 432 pounds of beef that he cuts, wraps and sells to customers. Supply and demand set the price for beef regardless of farmerrancher cost of production. And unlike most manufactured products, the price of beef moves up and down. When homemakers buy more beef, supplies are reduced, and prices tend to rise because consumers are bidding against each other for available meat. ( Straight Line *** ^^^^^^ *' We have blue Concord and White Seedless grapes. They had grapes for the first time about three years ago. First year, real nice, next year, okay, third year, just plain sorry. The blue ones didn't even ripen. Could you give us some advice? Mrs. G. M., Kennesaw Mr. C. D. Spivey, Extension Horticulturist with the Cooperative Ex tension Service, advises that if you have not had a rigid spray program to control the diseases, this could be one of the major reasons why they declined each year. The other reason could be that they require a rather high amount of magnesium sulfatc. This can be applied by using Epsom salts. Apply one cupful around each of these plants about the first to the fifteenth of March each year along with your regular fertilizer program. You should also contact your county agent for a spray guide that will list the materials, the time and amount to apply on your grape vines. ##* Mar. 16 -- C.S.R.A., Warrcnton, 1:30 PM.
