Poultry Clubs 
Are Old Hobby 
The Greater Atlanta Poultry Breeders Club was organized in the '30s by a group of people interested in purebred poultry as a hobby. These people, like most of us today, felt the need for something to take their minds off the routine of family life and daily problems of their regular jobs. 
Being a lover of poultry, this club's purpose has been to strive to improve the breed or variety to make as nearly a perfect bird as possible. 
Of course this was not the first club of this kind, and won't be the last. Poultry as a hobby dates back several thousand years to the European and Asiatic countries, and was brought to the U. S. with the early settlers. At this time, poultry was primarily used for meat and eggs, but the settlers spread to the west coast, and when the emphasis on poultry decreased as farming increased, more and more time was devoted to poultry breeding for pleasure. 
A good many years ago, poultrymen formed the American

Poultry Association (APA), which covers all fowl, both large and small. Later, the American Bantam Association was formed to specialize in the bantams, miniature replicas of their large fowl ancestors. 
The people all over the U. S., Canada, and several foreign countries who make up the local clubs, like the Greater Atlanta Poultry Breeders Association are the back bone of the A.P.A. and the A.B.A. These clubs are working together to breed, raise and show the one bird that will rise to be Grand Champion of their show. Of course the judges who place the awards have bred and shown several breeds, and have passed a rigid test given by the A.P.A. or A.B.A., and often both. 
No one is in the hobby for the money. If this be the purpose, the hobby would fold. You might at best, get enough from sales of extra show birds to pay your expenses, but never expect profits. 
As for shows, the country is full of them. Almost every town has a 
poultry club that in some way is connected with a poultry show at least once a year. Also, almost all large fairs hold such shows. 
The fair shows are held in every state, with Georgia having one in Rome, Dalton, Marietta, Atlanta, Macon, Columbus, and possibly other cities. 
Our local club here in Atlanta is connected with the Southeastern Fair. We have one of the largest shows inGeorgia. Last year we had some 1500 chickens, about 300 pigeons, and 400 rabbits. This includes about 100 4-H Club laying hens from district winners all over

Cattlemen Warned Careful Handling Required 
 
On Grass Tetany 
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin warned Georgia cattlemen this week that his office is receiving an increasing number of reports of cattle deaths due to grass tetany and livestock owners should watch and manage their herds properly to prevent losses. 
Irvin said the condition, which occurs particularly in beef cattle, results from grazing on wheat or other cereal crops or in animals exposed to changeable weather conditions. 
The condition is caused by a deficiency of magnesium and sometimes calcium in the bloodstream, Irvin said. Affected animals should receive treatment immediately and such treatment 
requires intravenous injections of calcium and magnesium salts by a veterinarian, he added. 
To help avoid losses farmers were advised that cattle on heavily fertilized pastures should have access to hay or dry pasture. Supplementary feeding with magnesium rich minerals or the feeding of two ounces of magnesium oxide per head per day during the danger period greatly reduces the threat.

Pesticide chemicals, insecticides, fungicides, and related agricultural 
 
chemicals are farm tools that are necessary for the efficient production of the 
 
abundance of high quality food that the people of this country enjoy. Like any 
 
farm tool, pesticides must be handled and used with care. 
 
All persons who use pesticide chemicals, whether around the farm or home, should be aware of what 
 
they are and what they will do. They should know that such chemicals must be used in certain specific

U. S. Congressman Dawson Mathis from Georgia's second congressional district has introduced legislation (H.R. 12713) in the National Congress to permit the lease and transfer of tobacco allotments across county lines within a state. 
This legislation would not become effective until approved by a 2/3 favorable vote of growers in each state. Each state would be governed by the referendum results in that particular state alone. 
If this legislation passes in the U. S. Congress, each Georgia tobacco 
grower will be given an opportunity

EQUINE ADVISORY BOARD 
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has established a Georgia 
Equine Advisory Board for the purpose of advising him and the Department of Agriculture of needed programs to protect and promote the fast growing horse industry of Georgia. 
Commissioner Irvin said the need for the board had arisen from the rapidly increasing number of horses in Georgia as well as the increased economic impact on the state's agri-business complex.

Always store pesticides in the original, labeled container with the label plainly visible. Never store them in old bottles or food containers that could be mistaken for food or drink for humans or animals. 
Do not store pesticides near food or feed. 
Always keep lids and bungs tightened' when containers are not being used. 
Keep all "empty" pesticide containers in locked storage area until disposed of properly. 
Containers should be periodically checked for corrosion, leaks, breaks, tears, etc. so that faulty containers may be disposed of or replaced before they constitute a hazard. 
Do not permit anyone to sleep or eat in a room where pesticides are stored. 
Install an exhaust fan for ven- 
tilation in storage rooms to help reduce high concentrations of toxic fumes and to hold temperatures down. 
Remember: "Empty" containers are never completely empty! They are-like the "unloaded" gun, and are to be considered hazardous and treated as potential killers.

Dear Editor: American "Folk Art" is a relatively unresearched field. 
Much information must still be gathered before we shall even know many of the more prominent craftsmen of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. 
Any information gathered by the American Primitive Art class at Wesleyan College will be compiled and made available to interested researchers in this field. However, we need the help of individual homeowners, collectors, or families. Most fine examples of "folk art" are kept in private homes, handed down through the family. Should any of 
your readers have such pieces, we would appreciate very much any information they would care to give. For example, history of the piece, origin, who made it (if known). 
We are looking for: hand-carved wood toys, figureheads, cigar store figures, hand-crafted kitchen utensils of wood, or wrought iron, or other; weather vanes, old gravestones; pottery (any kind); dolls, old quilts; coverlets; clothes; samplers; paintings; drawings; birth certificates; old signs; handcrafted furniture; these are just a few. The older it is, the more we can be sure that it is authentic folk art. 
If your readers care to help, and have any such pieces in their possession, please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

HOMEMADE COTTAGE CHEESE 
 
1/2 gallon clabbered milk melted butter or sweet cream 
(1 Tablespoon to the quart) salt to taste Place utensil with ingredients in a pan of hot water and heat until the curd separates. Don't let it boil. When mixture gets too hot, it becomes tough. You can wait until the mixture finishes heating before working in the salt and cream. You may like to add a touch of paprika for color.

DRIED APPLE PUDDING 
 
1/2 cup cornmeal 
1 cup flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon soda 1 1/2 cups buttermilk 2 cups dried apples, mashed and sweetened with corn syrup or honey 
Mix in soft dry ingredients. Add buttermilk to make batter thick enough to drop from spoon on a hot, greased griddle. Makes 12 cakes. When serving, put mashed apples between 2 cakes and sprinkle powdered sugar lightly on top. Serve hot with thin cream.

The legend of the poppy anemone is one of the most fascinating and oldest in history. It is recorded that back in 1629 John Parkinson, the first garden-writer of England, noted that "few flowers can compare to it in variety of delightsomeness." 
The original "Poppy Anemone" has always grown wild in the Middle East, clothing the hills of Palestine after each rainy season. Eventually the conviction grew that they were the "Lilies of the Field" mentioned in the New Testament, but that they had only bloomed in white or blue until the Crucifixion, when a blood-red variety appeared at the foot of the Cross. 
During the Crusades one Umberto, Bishop of Pisa, suggested that ships returning from the Holy Land bring back a ballast of good soil instead of sand. When they did so, the "sacred earth" was spread on the Campo Sancto, or cemetery. Next spring, a marvelous red flower appeared as if sprung from the blood of the martyrs. Holy men regarded this as a miracle, or said they did, and the plant was distributed all over Europe by pilgrims. 
Anemone coronaria is widely cultivated in California and the southeastern U. S. The solitary poppy-like flowers in shades of red, blue, white and every hue inbetween, are borne on a smooth stalk, 10 to 18 inches high. The peak blooming season for these plants lasts from spring through autumn.

aware of this fact and others pertaining to weight-scaling, or the weighing of forest products, to estimate volumes. 
One of the major drawbacks to weight-scaling, and the one that significantly affects private, nonindustrial forest landowners, is the lack of industry standards governing weight-seal ing. Many buyers use a weight-volume ratio as the basis for products purchased. 
For example, 16,000 pounds per thousand board feet is a common ratio for slash and longleaf pine logs in south Georgia. Unfortunately, the 16,000 pounds per thousand board feet is not used by all mills. The ratio may vary between mills due to utilization practices, species, location, size of logs, and other factors. 
This variation in weight-volume ratios between mills is confusing to persons selling products. Prices are generally quoted on the basis of so much per thousand board feet. 
These prices mean little unless the weight-volume ratio is determined. 
An identical price quote from two mills, on the basis of price per thousand board feet, is not the same if the two mills use different weightvolume ratios. 
Industry standards employing a recognized and accepted unit of weight, such as a ton, would aid in clearing up much of the confusion that now exists. Prices for products quoted on a ton basis would be directly comparable. 
Until such standards are adopted by the forest products industry, landowners should keep in mind the variation in weight-volume ratios. 
Remember also that large trees will yield more lumber or other product per ton than will small trees. Large, quality sawlogs may yield a thousand board feet for every 12,000 pounds, instead of every 16,000 pounds. 
Steeplechase Coming To Ga. 
The seventh annual running of the Atlanta Hunt Meeting and Steeplechase will be held Saturday, March 18, at the new Atlanta Steeplechase track near Gumming, off Highway 141. 
The Atlanta event, benefiting the Multiple Schlerosis Society, will kick off the eastern hunt meeting circuit with horses and jockeys going from here up the eastern seaboard for a season of jump racing.
