FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Deparfmenf of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 58 H. Emmett Reynolds Farm Bureau Fed. Assists Dairymen Georgia Farm Bureau Marketing Association, the marketing affiliate of Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, has recently entered a program designed to assist Georgia dairymen in the procurement of top quality dairy replacements for their dairy programs._ The Associa- tion's desire is to perform a service for Georgia dairy- men in provid- ing a reliable source for dairy herd re- placements and dairy feeder calves. The Georgia Farm Bureau Marketing Association program is in conjunction with the American Agricultural Marketing Association, (Our guest columnist this week is H. Emmett Reynolds, President, Georgia Farm Bureau Marketing Association, P. O. Box 4408, Macon 31208.)________________ the national marketing affiliate of the American Farm Bureau. The program utilizes the concept of direct farmer to farmer marketing through their own respective farmer owned and operated marketing associations. Dairymen in Wisconsin, Iowa, New York and other dairy states pre-contract with their individual state Farm Bureau marketing associations to market a certain quantity of top quality dairy replacement cattle annually. In so doing, the state association is assured of a reliable source for top quality animals. On the demand end, State Farm Bureaus, such as Georgia, act as the demand state and place orders with the supply state to meet the demands of their individual members. The state association acts only as the sales representative or sales agent for the individual dairymen and also guarantees that the payment will be made to the seller in accordance with the USDA's Packers and Stockyards Administration requirements. One of the factors making the pro- gram highly successful is that a national communications program has been established that identifies animal quality according to a uniform coding system that substitutes transportation with communication. The program is backed by the integrity and financial responsibility of each respective state marketing association through their affiliation with the American Farm Bureau. In order for a Georgia dairyman to participate, he may contact the Georgia Farm Bureau Marketing Association in Macon, discuss his requirements with marketing personnel there and place an order with the Marketing Association for the (Continued on Page 7) Wednesday, December 13, 1972 Number 50 Commissioner Seeks Relief For lime Shortages In Ga. Building Compost Pile; Nature's Own Fertilizer Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin last week contacted railroad officials concerning the lack of limestone being shipped into Building a compost heap for home gardening is ecological, economical and rewarding. Unless your soil has been so neglected for many years that chemicals will be necessary to rebuild it, compost can also be one of the best fertilizers known to man. __ Georgia for Agricultural use. Limestone is a basic essential to efficient crop production in Georgia Although nature did not use the compost heaps but merely let the as most soil in the State is quite acid. Poultryman Receives Five Year Sentence State Stops Garbage Feed refuge stay and decompose, there are several reasons we cannot. One, it took nature thousands of years to create one inch of good topsoil, modern man doesn't have that much time. Alton Walters, president of Walters Poultry Co., Lavonia, has pleaded guilty to the unauthorized use of an official federal inspection mark, in violation of the Poultry Products Inspection Act. Walters was given a 5-year suspended sentence. The violation involved packing 77 pounds of poultry products which had not been federally inspected in cartons bearing the federal poultry inspection mark. The violation, which occurred in 1969, was discovered during a routine USDA compliance check. The Poultry Products Inspection Act requires, in part, that all poultry moving in interstate commerce be federally inspected and that official inspection marks be used only by authorized personnel of the USDA. A new Georgia law will prohibit the feeding of garbage to swine after Jan. 1 and automatically revoke the licenses of some 700 garbage feeding operations, affecting virtually every county in the state. At the last session of the General Assembly, the legislature passed a ruling stating that no more garbage could be fed to swine as of January 1, 1973. This was done in part due to the fact that the largest number of confirmed cases of hog cholera have come from those violating the gar- bage cooking regulations. Under present law, household gar- bage may be fed to one's own swine provided the hogs are slaughtered for personal use and not for sale. No licenses to feed garbage have been issued since July 1, 1972. No more licenses will be issued. In addition, some of the componants of compost put off a rather unpleasant odor when decomposing, the neighbors might complain. Bacteria Do The Work The moment a compost pile is completed, millions of bacteria get right to work. The process of decay begins. As more and more bacteria are reproduced, the quicker the organic matter is turned into valuable compost. Nitrogen is necessary to have a good, fast working compost pile. Nitrogen is needed to create the heat which helps to break down the organic 'matter into humus and destroys all insects and weed seeds. Minerals high in nitrogen are manures, fresh grass clippings, freshly cut hay, or tankage. A rotary mower can be used for this if you do not have a shredder. Organic materials that lend themselves beautifully to composting are tomatoes, and tomato plants; green corn stalks; all vegetable plants, and vines, that have finished bearing but are still slightly green; all types of green grass, and young hay trimmings; young weeds; old plants from the strawberry bed; leaves, and any other kind of organic matter that will readily decay. Choosing A Spot After all materials have been shredded, choose a likely spot for your compost heap. It should be level, yet well-drained, and near enough to the house so that the garden hose will reach. When constructing your compost pile, first spread at least 6 inches of shredded material over the entire area to be covered by the pile to serve as a base. SOYBEAN LOSSES Soybean harvest losses are tough any year, but this year they will be especially costly because of reduced yields. H. B. Goolsby, Extension Service engineer, advises growers to reduce ground speed of their combines as one way of saving more beans. He explains that many bean pods are set close to the ground because of the dry weather. "By reducing combine speed, you will be able to run the header closer to the ground," he says. Avoid taking your children out for one all day shopping spree. If possible, take them on several short shopping trips so that tempers do not get short. With the large crowds at the holiday season, it is important to talk to your children before you take them shopping to make sure they understand some basic manners to follow while shopping. Warn them about the danger to themselves and others that is caused by playing on escalators and running in parking lots and shopping areas. Remind them to look but not touch the merchandise. Shopping can be fun for the whole family if everyone is polite and cooperative. This responsibility should be shared by the children. Practice patience and keep the Christmas spirit. Farm Bureau (Continued From Page 1) quantity he desires along with the specifications that best fit into his dairying enterprise. The springing heifers are offered in three basic classifications: (1) AAMA Fancy - With DHIA records, well marked, of good dairy character and tem- perament. Normally sold 30-60 days from freshening. Holsteins will weigh 1,200 Ibs. or more. (2) AAMA Choice - Well marked, of good dairy character and tem- perament. Normally sold 30-60 days from freshening. Holsteins will weigh 1,200 Ibs. or more. (3) AAMA Good- Primarily a smaller type heifer of average dairy type. Nor^ mally sold 30-60 days from freshening. Holsteins will weigh 1,050 Ibs. or more. Open heifers are also available through state marketing associations and according to Ned Hamil, Georgia Farm Bureau Marketing Association General Manager, an ex- cellent opportunity exists for Georgia producers to pur- chase good top quality open heifers for use on their own farms or for resale to other dairymen in the state. Several hundred head of dairy cattle have already moved through the new Farm Bureau venture and hundreds more are scheduled for movement in the immediate future. Additional in- formation about the program and its value to Georgia dairymen may be procured through contact with Georgia Farm Bureau Marketing Association in Macon, Georgia. Page 8 Anyone who has ever raked leaves remembers this tree! Its leaves have been the nemesis for more than one eager leaf raker determined to clear the front lawn by noon. The leaves are deciduous in win- ter although they usually don't fall off all at once. They are about 2 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide, narrow at the base and broader at the rounded end. The acorns are rather round and blackish and only about 1/2 inch long; shallow saucer-shaped cups hold the bitter nut. The water oak is also known as the Possum oak, spotted oak, pin oak and red oak through various parts of the southeast where it is predominantly located. The tree prefers the warm southern climate where precipitation averages at least 50 inches per year. Ideally they like a frost-free period of about 200 - 260 days per year. The water oak is a round topped tree from 50 to 80 feet in height with a trunk diameter of about 2 to 3 1/2 feet. It is commonly found along stream banks and near water. However, prolonged submergence of roots during the growing season will kill the tree. If it does have the right growing conditions the tree will grow about 2 feet per year for its first 25 birthdays. The greatest danger to these trees however is not "wet feet". They are susceptible to damage by fire at all ages. Even a very light burn will kill the stems of all seedlings and small saplings. These trees do not recuperate well from fires and their scars usually do not heal. They become the subject of serious butt rot which will finish off a weakened tree. Wood from the water oak is of lit- tle value except for use as fuel. Its susceptibility to insects result in a less than grade A lumber and is usually by-passed for other oak varieties. Valera Jessee Tobacco Quota Given A national marketing quota of 1,179 million pounds for the 1973 crop of flue-cured tobacco, 10 percent larger than 1972 quota, has been announced by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Notices of individual farm acreage allotments and marketing quotas for 1973 will be mailed to farm operators by local agricultural stabilization and conservation committees. Flue-cured tobacco is grown in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Alabama. THE MARKET BULLETIN The Atlantic International Marketing Association, "AIM", met in Atlanta last week to discuss possible overseas markets for Agricultural products. "AIM" is composed of Marketing representatives from six states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The Association was formed to cooperate in marketing overseas agricultural products of common interests to these states. Those attending the meeting were: left to right standing Curtis F. Tarleton, North Carolina Department of Agriculture; S. W. Brown, New York State Department of Agriculture; Jim Lankford, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agriculture Service; Robert Rogers, South Carolina Department of Agriculture; Mrs. Billie Tovell, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agriculture Service; D. C. Hutchins, South Carolina Department of Agriculture; Commissioner Mason Carbaugh Virginia Department of Agriculture; Ken Decker, Texas Department of Agriculture; John Ligon, Virginia Department of Agriculture. Seated left to right: Emory L. Brinson, Georgia Department of Agriculture; Bob Sadler, Virginia Department of Agriculture; Jim Toomey, U. S. Department of Agriculture; Don Cunnion, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture; Sid Miller, Maryland Department of Agriculture; and Eugene Carroll, North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Compost Pile (Continued From Page 1) grass clippings, and manure (any kind). If no true manure is available, apply 3 inches of grass clippings, and sprinkle them well with dehydrated cow manure to serve as a nitrogen source. Upon this, place about 1 inch of good topsoil to plant the pile with the necessary soil bacteria to get the compost off to a quick start, and to decompose the materials in good fashion. Without these, it will take the organic matter much longer to decompose. Continue the layers in the same manner until all of the available organic matter is used up. After adding the last layer, bring the pile to a sharp peak so that a basin will not form and hold water. When the pile is completed give it a good over-all watering with the hose. (To hasten decomposition should the materials be extra dry, water each layer.) Within 3 to 4 days, the inner section of the moist pile will become so hot that it will be uncomfortable to the touch. It is then time to turn the pile with the garden fork, making certain the materials on the outside are thrown into the center of the new pile of even decomposition. Turn again within 3 days, and every third day for 3 weeks. Soon Ready Compost made in this manner will be ready for use within 14 to 20 days, and is far superior to that which takes several months to decay without turning, or watering. Since rains have not had a chance to leach out valuable nutrients, its value as a plant food is much greater. There is no question that manure, compost, and heavy mulching (6-8 in. thick) of hay, grass clippings, etc., will produce good crops of vegetables and flowers, especially on soils naturally deficient in moistureholding capacity or in plant food, or in both. Such response to good hort. practice should not delude the grower into assuming that plants so grown are immune to pest attack or have significantly higher food value. IStraight Line 1 * ^^ Please help me locate a hatchery that sells baby turkeys. P. B., Lollie Try Thaxton Poultry, Watkinsville, Georgia. You may write them direct to see if you can obtain the baby turkeys. **** How can you tell the difference between the male and the female guineas? Mrs. F. L., Valdosta Cackles, our poultry man, says the male guinea will be a little larger and will have larger red gills and pumpknot on top of his head. They will also do more hollering than the female. **** How can I get a permit to sell jams, jellies and canned foods that are prepared in my home? E. W., Lakemont Since there are additional details we need to have concerning your plans to sell these items, we are asking one of our sanitarians to contact you personally and discuss in detail our requirements. He will be able to evaluate the facilities you plan *to*us*e *for processing of such products. Are the seeds of magnolia grandifloras likely to produce offspring like the parent? F. B., Atlanta It is generally assumed that magnolia trees grown from seed will vary considerably from the parent tree. They may or may not have the same leaf color, size, as well as form of the parent tree. Usually, when special genetic characteristics are desired, the plants will be grafted to retain them. Transplanting Trees Transplanting of most Georgia trees should be done between November 15 and March 15 for best results. To transplant, the entire root ball should be dug up, keeping as many of the roots intact as possible. The tree should be planted in a hole which has been dug out about twice as much as needed. The hole should be then half filled with a mixture of soil and organic matter such as peat moss, barkmulch, or barnyard manure. It should be set in the hole about the same depth as it was originally and packed firmly to eliminate air pockets. The tree should be watered during dry periods
