Old Industry Has 
Southern Flavor 
Corn millers claim the milling of corn is the oldest mechanized industry in the state. 
At one time there were close to 1200 mills here in Georgia. The first industry built in any settlement was usually its mill. As our transportation system improved it was no longer necessary to have a mill in every village; and with the invention of steam and electric power, the mills were 
no longer confined to the banks of streams. And so our number dwindled, but the mills that remained greatly increased their capacity- 
Southerners still have their taste for corn meal products. 
In 1951 the millers formed the Georgia Corn Millers Association. The purpose of the association is to

improve our product and to promote its use. Today the association has 27 members, representing 95 per cent of the mills in Georgia. 
We meet periodically to plan how best to achieve our goals. Dues are prorated on the basis of the amount of grind so that the small businessman is encouraged to participate. 
Members of our association have cooperated on a voluntary basis with the USDA Extension Service to enrich our meal by the addition of vitamins and minerals. Enriched corn meal is given credit for helping cure and prevent pellagra in lowincome areas of the South. 
Georgia millers are particularly noted for the excellent flavor of their meal. This is directly attributable to the grinding of the whole kernel of the corn. 
We promote our products in a number of ways. In the past we have asked the governor of Georgia to declare Corn Bread Week. We cooperate with various 4-H projects and donate the corn meal for events such as Georgia 4-H Corn Muffin contest. 
Members of our association donate the corn meal sold at the corn meal booth at the Atlanta Harvest Festival each year. The profit from this booth is given to the 4-H Foundation to provide scholarships. 
The Georgia Corn Millers Association welcomes new members as we strive to grind better and sell more meal. Look for our symbol on the bags of corn meal you buy it's your assurance of enriched, whole grain Georgia corn meal.

JAPANESE BEETLE 
CAUSES QUARANTINE 
The Japanese beetle quaratine has been revised to include all or portions of six counties in Georgia. 
The counties are Bartow, Burke, Columbia, Gordon, Murray and Paulding. 
Twelve counties in four other southeastern states also were named in the quarantine action by USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). 
APHIS officials said the quarantine action was taken to deter further spread of the Japanese beetle, which is injurious to ornamental and cultivated crops. 
The highly destructive beetle attacks nearly 300 kinds of plants. The grubs feed on roots of grasses and on turf. The adult feeds on flowers, shrubs, trees, fruit and field crops such as corn and soybeans. 
Under the regulation, certain articles may not be moved interstate from a regulated area unless they are inspected and certified free of Japanese beetles. Regulated articles include soil, plants with roots, grass sod, bulbs and used soil-moving equipment. 
Cholera Outbreak 
In Washington Cty. 
Some 500 head of hogs in Washington County were liquidated last week following confirmation of an outbreak of hog cholera. 
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said the farm and all farms and herds within a five mile radius of the outbreak have been placed under quarantine and survey crews are now out checking other herds to determine the extent of the outbreak. 
There have been three outbreaks of hog cholera in neighboring Johnson County within the past three months.

there are certain safety factors that 
 
should be taken into account to in- 
 
sure as joyous a season as Christmas

In selecting a live tree, buy a fresh 
 
one that has not been allowed to dry 
 
out. Keep the fresh tree outdoors in 
 
a cool place until ready to decorate.

Permanent care labels for the clothes you make are now a reality. Legislation requiring permanent care labeling for textile articles of wearing apparel and most textile fabrics bought to make clothes is in effect for goods manufactured after July 3, 1972. 
At the fabric counters expect the salesperson to provide a care label for each garment to be made. Ask for the care labels, then sew them in. When washing or dry cleaning the clothes, follow the label. 
Yard goods should be labeled on the end of the bolt with a triangle system. A box of labels corresponding with the triangle gives care instructions. The salesperson should provide a care label corresponding to that indicated on the bolt.

Place the tree in a stand that will hold water at the base. Check water level at least once a day. 
Do not use decorations that might burn, such as cotton or paper. Angel hair and snow spray are a definite fire hazard when used together on the same tree at the same time. 
In selecting lights for your tree, buy only those that bear the Underwriters' Laboratory (UL) seal. Check old f light cords for breaks and faulty wiring. Never use electric lights on metal trees, instead use one of the revolving colored spotlights.

In dressing seven hens from my barnyard, I noticed that four had growths of some sort on their livers. They were all about one year old and showed no signs of being sick. I did not eat them, but would like to know if it would have been harmful if I had.

Vote On Order 
Georgia peach growers are voting Dec. 1 to 12 on whether to continue the federal marketing order regulating the interstate shipment of Georgia-grown peaches. Ballots must be postmarked no later than Dec. 12. 
Officials of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service said that provisions of the marketing order, originally effective in 1942, require that a referendum be held every two years. All growers of Georgia peaches for market in 1972 are eligible to vote. 
Duroc Show, Sale 
Duroc breeders and swine leaders from across the nation gather January 6-9 at Statesboro for a national swine congress, hosted by the Georgia Duroc Breeders Association. 
Some 400 barrows, gilts and boars from nearly 30 states will be on hand. A sale on January 9 will climax the show. Contact your county agent for information on this show and sale.

1 cup butter 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 10 tablespoons 
sour cream 
 
1 cup mashed bananas 3 1/2 cups flour 2 teaspoons 
baking powder 11/2 taplespoon 
soda, level pinch of salt 
 
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat 
well after each is added. Sift flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Add alternately with sour cream. Add vanilla and mashed bananas. Turn into angel food pan and bake 1 hour

Oit 
One of the most abundant trees of the central and southeastern United States, the Post Oak readily adapts to any kind of soil found in Georgia. It seems to prefer gravelly or sandy upland soils with few minerals, but it is also common in areas that are alternately waterlogged and bone dry. 
The Post Oak, also known as the Iron Oak, derived its common name from its extensive use for fence posts, railroad ties and mine props. It is also an excellent fuel wood and probably the kind of oak you buy at your friendly lumber yard, for construction purposes. 
The leaves of the Post Oak are quite distinctive, ranging from 4 to 6 inches long and 3 to 4 inches broad. They are thick, and somewhat leathery in texture, and usually 5-lobed. The two middle lobes are opposite and much larger than the other lobes giving the leaf a cross-shaped design. 
The Post Oak, like' most other oaks, starts producing acorns when the tree is about 25 years old. The acorn is about 2/3 inches long, bowl-shaped and covers about 1/3 of the nut. 
The tree itself is a small to medium-sized tree reaching a height of about 60 feet. Although the Post Oak often succumbs to larger more dominant trees, many times it wins out over less hardy and drought resistant varieties, due to its ability to adjust to various soil conditions.

Check Cattle Often For Grass Tetany 
Winter weather is upon us and beef producers are warned to be on the lookout for grass tetany in cattle on lush pastures. Grass tetany is due to a deficiency in magnesium. Low soil levels of magnesium are the trigger mechanisms for grass tetany and cause an imbalance of magnesium. 
Signs of grass tetany include nervousness and an awkward gait followed by muscle tremors, rapid breathing and collapse of the animal. Tetany is more common in older cows and usually happens after calving when blood magnesium is subnormal. 
Prevention of grass tetany involves sensible pasture fertilization and supplementation of magnesium oxide at the rate of one ounce per day.

The forestry people advise they have had very little success in selling 
 
walnut trees, especially as standing timber. Usually, the only way anyone 
 
will buy standing timber, of any species, is for the landowner to have at 
 
least several acres. In most cases, the walnut trees would either have to be 
 
extremely large or at least several acres. We have no figures on the exact 
 
price of walnut timber. There is a mill near Asheville, North Carolina, 
 
which has payed from $400/thousand board feet and up for walnut logs 
 
delivered to the mill. The logs would have to be at least eight feet or 
 
longer.

It is difficult to identify just the nut. You have to also consider the tree; the leaf shape, the arrangements of the leaves, the buds, the twigs, the flowers, the bark and even the shape of the tree itself. The nut appears to be one of the hickories, however, we are not sure which one. If you will 
take a limb showing the leaves, buds, twigs, etc., as well as one of the nuts, to our district forester at Columbus, Mr. Rowe Wall, 5120 Warm Springs Rd., perhaps he can help you identify it.

Never leave the lights burning on your tree or lighted candelabras in your windows, when you go away From home or when you are asleep. 
Many accidents are caused oy carelessness in decorating the tree. Remember: check all wiring for dangerous frayed cords, faulty sockets, or loose connections; stand on a ladder or stool to reach the higher branches and leave the lower branches for your children to decorate. Don't smoke while trimming the tree. Turn off lights before retiring or going away. Once the tree becomes brittle and dry, take it down and discard it. 
Fire tests have found that a six to seven foot tree requires an average of only 36 seconds from time of ignition to flame out and during this period of time flames up to 23 feet in height are generated. Materials in the same room are soon engulfed in flames and the homeowner has a dangerous situation. 
These suggestions may help you have a safe Christmas, and hopefully a happy one for you and yours. 
 
American Agriculture 
Only about five percent of our labor force is needed for agricultural production. This is a very different situation from other parts of the world. 
In some parts of Europe anywhere from 10 to 30 per cent of the population is involved in agriculture. In Latin America the percentage reaches as high as 60 to 70 and is even higher in parts of Asia. In most African countries anywhere from 60 to 90 per cent of the population is involved in agriculture.

The Georgia Seed Development Commission reports that all foundation soybean seed have been harvested and now in storage. Processing- is now underway and preliminary germinations appear to be good.

When your TV trays are old and battered, remove the tray and keep the folding leg bases. Make a bag of light-weight canvas and sew it to the top rims of the TV tables. Presto, a laundry cart! Stands with wheels are especially handy. You'll have a lightweight laundry stand and you can use two or three at one time as you divide your clothes.
