FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 58 Frank Wilkinson Better Seed; Better Farming In 1940, a group of people concerned with good seed held their first meeting at the Dempsey Hotel in Macon, and established the Georgia Seedsmen's Association. Bob Snelson was elected the first President. Today, some 32 years later, the purpose of this association has not changed. As a non-partisan and nonpolitical group, we are dedicated solely to work for the betterment of agriculture. Good seed play a vital role in this regard. The 32nd annual convention was held in Atlanta July 9-11, 1972. I was elected President; Byron Elliott of H. C. Williams Peanut Company (Our guest columnist this week is Frank Wilkinson, President, Georgia Seedsmen's Association, Empire Pedigreed Seed Company, Haralson, 30229.)__________________ in Ashburn, First Vice President; and U. J. Hogan of Farmers Service Center in Dudley, Second Vice President. In Addition, Jerry Malcom of Sawan in Atlanta and Carl Wheeler of Stevens Industries of Dawson were elected to the executive committee. Secretary-Treasurer Roy C. Jones, the work horse of the association, was re-elected for the 17th consecutive term. Past presidents of the association include: Frank Everett, "Doc" Corbin, Don Hastings Sr., Hal Cofer Sr., David Walker, "Grits" Griffin, Warren Hodges, Reeder Tucker, L. L. Patten, Ernest Martin, Bill Kuhlke, Rufus Adams, Harold Akins, John Harlow, Ed Young, W. J. Estes, Bill Wright, Elbridge Freeborn Jr., Ed Beckham, Brooks Pennington Jr., Jimmy Lahford, W. R. O'Dell, Rex Chastain, O. C. Giles, Rhodes Hardeman, Emmett Black, A. J. Powell, Hal Cofer Jr., and Bob Hurd. New officers are elected each year. You can observe from the list of former presidents that the association is truly representative of the seed industry. It includes a cross section of growers, processors, dealers and wholesalers. Competitors and customer alike; all are licensed to deal in seed. All are governed by the state and federal regulatory agencies. Each year the association awards a University of Georgia scholarship to some deserving student selected by the faculty who plans to make his career in Georgia agriculture. Down through the years, these students have completed their schooling and returned to the farm, or to the Agribusiness community. The association plans to continue the scholarships because we feel agriculture has benefited. Wednesday, October 18, 1972 1972 Fall Farm Land Edition Fall Gardening Time For Spring Beauty It hasn't frosted yet! Frost is several weeks away! Many gardeners use these explanations to justify delaying some necessary gardening activities. Frost may not have occurred in your area yet, but you can rest assured it is on its way. With it will come the end of those pots or containers of geraniums, coleus, begonias, ferns, foliage plants, and other non-hardy plants that you have failed to bring indoors. Be sure to inspect your plants before bringing them inside. If insect or disease problems are present spray them carefully with a recommended insecticide or fungicide. Also, a good rinsing of the foliage to remove dust will be beneficial. For the first few days after the move indoors, place the plants where they will receive as much sunlight as possible. Keep a close check on soil Farm Facts A century ago, the average farmer produced only enough food and fiber to supply himself and 4.1 other persons. Today, each farmer supplies about 50 persons in addition to himself. Most of this increase in productivity was achieved in recent years 77% since 1950, 55% since 1960. American agriculture does its job on fewer acres today than it did 20 years ago 1,114 million acres compared with 1,206 million. Food is a better bargain than it's ever been. The share of the average consumer's total disposable income spent on food has decreased from 20% in I960 to 15.5% now. What's agriculture worth in terms of money? Cash receipts from all farm marketings reached $51.6 billion last year -- $29.7 billion from livestock, $21.9 billion from crops. In contrast, total cash receipts were only $28.5 billion in 1950. Total realized net income from farming was $15.7 billion in 1971. On a per farm basis, this amounted to $5,459, or more than twice the 1950 average. moisture because plants will dry out quickly when your furnace or heaters are operating. October brings other gardening activities to the forefront. The planting of spring flowering bulbs is certainly a highlight of the month. Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, narcissus, crocus, and others need to be placed in the ground now so that roots may develop before the soil temperature drops. Here are the planting depths Tulips 6" - 7", Hyacinths 4", Daffodils 6"-8", Dutch Iris 3", and Crocus, Glory-of-the-Snow, Grape Hyacinths and Snow Drops deep enough so that the tip .of the bulbs are 2" deep. Use enough bulbs of one variety to make an outstanding display of color. If you are selecting several colors of any one bulb such as tulips use care regarding height and time of bloom. Remember most bulbs require soil drainage for best results. This means deep spading, addition of organic matter or humus and (Continued on page 12) Ga. Home Economists Honored Nationally Four Georgia Extension workers received the highest honor of the National Association of County Extension Home Economists held in Denver, Colorado, October 10-13. Distinguished Service Awards were presented to Mrs. Elizabeth Brantley, Bleckley County; Mrs. Crawford Farmer, Elbert County; Mrs. Jean B. Jones, DeKalb County, and Mrs. Mary Reece, Wilkinson County. Georgia's DSA recipients have a total of more than 70 years service to homemakers and 4-H girls in their counties. Number 42 Irvin Pushes Newcastle Research The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine are seeking to combine funds and talent to initiate a crash research program on Asiatic Newcastle disease which has devastated the poultry industry in Southern California and been discovered, but believed eradicated, in Florida. "Many avian disease specialists feel that despite federal and state efforts to eradicate the disease, the presence of this new, more virulent form of newcastle in the United States represents a serious threat to the nation's poultry industry and that it may be only a matter of time before it hits Georgia, one of the nation's largest poultry states," according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Economic Threat "The economic threat to our state is enormous," Irvin added in announcing that he is seeking to enter into a contract with the University's Poultry Disease Research Center and immediately allocate $55,000 to initiate a crash research program which he hopes the Legislature will continue to finance. The research will be conducted by the Center in cooperation with the U.S.D.A. S. E. Regional Poultry Research Laboratory. Irvin said he proposes to make the funds available from his present budget with the anticipation of having the funds restored by the General Assembly. $400 Million Industry "Poultry scientists close to the situation, advise that such work must be initiated immediately in an effort to protect Georgia's $400 million plus poultry industry," Irvin said. The outbreak in California has cost poultry producers, as well as federal and state agencies millions of dollars. More than $15 million alone has been paid to poultry producers there whose birds have been slaughtered to control the disease, and there is no way to estimate the total cost of the outbreak to producers who have been put put of business. Some 1,200 state and federal personnel have been committed to the eradication effort in California. Last spring, the Georgia Department of Agriculture exterminated a number of exotic birds that had been exposed to the disease before being shipped or brought into Georgia for use as pets. One parrot seized at Atlanta airport was found to be a positive carrier of the disease. Commissioner Irvin said Dr. J. F. Andrews, State Veterinarian, and representatives of the University were in California last week assisting with the problem there. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: We farmers appreciate what's being done to promote new uses for our products, such as, all these signs advertising "MILK MAKES BETTER LOVERS". I went after some of that new dairy business, but clearing my pastures of persimmon trees was too much like work, so I came up with another idea. "PERSIMMONS MAKE BETTER LOVERS THAN MILK DOES". Eat persimmons and your lips stay puckered up all the time. Problem is, people may get tired of kissin' and lovin' after a while, isn't there any other use for persimmons? Sincerely yours, Joe Weldy Rt. 4, Gumming Georgia (Editors note: Can anyone advise Mr. Weldy of uses for persimmons?) Soak the peppers in brine for 24 hours (use 1 cup salt to 1 gallon water). Freshen in clear cold water for 1 to 2 hours. Drain well. Remove seeds and white sections. Chop separately and measure the cabbage, peppers and onions before mixing. Add spices, sugar and vinegar. Let stand overnight in covered crock or enameled vessels. Pack in sterilized jars. In packing, first drain off vinegar to get a good pack of the relish. After packing solidly, garnish on opposite sides of each jar at seams with slender pointed strips of red pepper about 1/4-inch wide and 3 inches long. When these strips are neatly placed in vertical position fill the jar to over- flowing with the vinegar in which the relish has stood. Pad- dle carefully and adjust lid. Page 12 91 A hardy perennial which reaches a height of from one and a half to two feet, lemon balm has broad, dark-green leaves with a faint lemon flavor and flowers growing in pale yellow clusters. Melissa officinalis thrives in all temperate climates and may be used attractively as a garden border. Balm is probably the most quoted of all herbs. There is little doubt that the lemon balm of today is the same herb ancient Greeks and Orientals crushed in their teas. Arabs praised tea made from balm leaves because it made "the heart merry and joyful". Early Greek physicians and authorities on medicinal plants say balm leaves were good for the scorpion-smitten and the dog-bitten. The ancients appreciated the bee-attracting quality of this fragrant herb. Lemon balm is not to be confused with bee balm (bergamot), a herb used by the American Indians. The soothing powers of balm continued to sustain men of the Middle Ages. An old herbal claims, "The dried leaves laid on top of the head will draw out the congestion and leave one light-headed". Balm tea is still used in some European countries as a remedy for fainting and the fever of colds. Leaves and tender sprigs lend a subtle, charming flavor to lemonade, teas, meats, sauces, stuffings, soups and salads. Valera Jessee Gardening (Continued from page \) ^~^ some sand in the case of hard packed clays. Other bulb activities concerns digging and storage of caladiums, tuberous begonias, gladiolus, and dahlias. As soon as tops begin to die back carefully dig the "bulbs" with soil intact. Place them in a warm dry place for a couple of weeks (or until soil and bulbs have dried). Carefully clean bulbs removing soil, dried roots, etc. Spread them in a shallow box or tray and allow them to dry a few more days. Store them at about 60 in a mesh bag, nylon stocking, or box where air can circulate around them. Check them periodically for rotting or other problems. THE MARKET BULLETIN Straight Line i My garden spot doesn't produce. The seed come up and die. Even grass won't grow on it. What is wrong? Do I need to have my soil tested? Z. A., Cataula It sounds as if your soil has a deficiency. Contact your county agent for instructions on having your soil tested. He has the necessary supplies to mail your soil in. Wednesday, October 18, 1972 Pig Birth Order Affects Health Pig size and health condition may be determined by order of birth, according to animal specialists. By arranging experimental pigs in order of their birth, first-born pigs weighed more and a greater percentage survived to the 28-day mark than pigs born later in the litter. What is the name of the enclosed bug? Where do they come from? I have been aggravated for months now with them. How can I control them? Mrs. J. W., Ringgold Well, it certainly would have been easier to help with your bugs if you had included your name and address. The bugs are ground beetles and they come in from out side. They are not harmful and can be controlled with Sevin or Diazinon outside. *** I fertilized my fish pond and now the fish won't bite. Can the fertilizer keep them from seeing the bait? H. D., Powder Springs The Game and Fish people ad vise that normal fertilization of a fish pond does not under normal conditions stop fish from biting. Since the fertilization does create a plankton bloom that to some degree reduces visibility, it may be that for sight feeders such as bass this would interfere to a slight degree with their ability to see lures or other baits that arc of fered. However, they don't think this would apply to catfish. *** Where can I get agricultural gypsum? A. B., Dublin Agricultural gypsum is Calcium sulfate and should be available at most farm supply stores which ban- die fertilizers and lime. Gypsum is often sold under the name of land- plaster. *** I received a poinsettia for Christmas last year. How do I get it to bloom this Christmas? I have heard special treatment is needed. Mrs. E. H., Lavonia The horticulturist advises that forcing a poinsettia to bloom in side is quite a feat. Controlled light, temperature, watering, fer tilizing are most essential. Before cool weather move the plant in doors to the brightest location possible. The plant must be ex posed to natural daylight. In other words, it must not be placed in a room where lights or lamps are cut on after dark. Any amount of light during the normal hours of darkness will delay flowering beyond Christmas. Nighttime tem peratures should be no higher than 60-62 degrees F., daytime 70-75 degrees F. Fertilize once a month with a water soluble fertilizer (much as you would use on other indoor plants). Keep a close check on soil moisture. DO NOT allow the soil to become excessively dry or wet -- just moist. Otherwise leaves will yellow and drop. Poinsettias indoors generally bloom in January or February rather than Christmas. *** RESPONSE There is a simple reason for Mrs. L. B. of Martin's milk souring and bubbling. It is the persimmons. They are getting ripe now and falling. I have had this trouble before. All you do is cut down all persimmon trees nearby or pick up all persimmons that fall on the ground and your problem will be solved.
