FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 58 Terry Williams Growing Trees For Christmas Georgia has thousands of acres suitable for growing yule trees. Tree Growers should order seedlings early as the supply of good plants are limited accord- ing to the Georgia Forestry Commission. The three proven Christmas tree varieties recommended for Georgia are Eastern White Pine, Virginia Pine, and Eastern Red Cedar. Weed control chemicals can be applied to prepared land during the fall (Our guest columnist this week is Terry Williams, Director, Georgia Christmas Tree Growers Association, 12 E. Olliff Street, Statesboro 30458.)______ when there is enough rain fall to cause the chemicals to be effective. When seedlings are received from the nursery sort out good healthy stems and roots. Be sure and discard small ones with sparse roots; if they survive the growth will be very slow. If the plants cannot be planted within three days heel them in a furrow packing soil tightly around bottom roots and water furrow weekly. This method will permit removal of seedlings to plant throughout the season. January through March 15th is usually best as this is when we have the most rain fall. In the marketing of Christmas trees the choose and cut method is becoming very popular as consumers prefer to select a fresh tree. People, and especially children, really prefer a day in the country, and indeed it can be fun selecting trees while they grow. Many growers tag trees months before Christmas for those who desire this pleasure before winter weather sets in. Plans have been completed for a fall seminar of Georgia Christmas Tree Growers Association members to be held in the Biology Building at Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, on October 21 at 10 AM. The public is invited and each member is urged to attend and bring an interested party. With todays emphasis on air and water pollution, water conservation, soil erosion, recreation, hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking there is a great need for all citizens to realize the value of forest conservation resources and their contribution in providing raw material for industry, jobs and the multiple uses of trees in our daily lives. The Georgia Christmas Tree Growers Association is helping to meet today's environmental and ecological problems. Wednesday, October 11, 1972 Number 41 Big Farm Show Coming To Ga. The Sixth Annual Farm Show will be held October 19-21 at the Macon Coliseum. This show will be an exhibition of everything that is modern and up-todate in Southern agriculture. There will be a full program geared to the homemaker also. The show will be held at the new agricultural engineering building and the 14-acre lake shores on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Within safety limitations, the show's goal is to provide every person desiring to do so an opportunity to drive or use the product in which he may be interested. The show is sponsored by the PROGRESSIVE FARMER MAGA- ZINE. Show hours will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Teams will also begin using an insecticide spray on all cattle within a 10 mile radius of the farm. The female screwworm fly lays its eggs in the open wounds or body cavities of warm blooded animals. When the eggs hatch into larva, the larva feed on the warm blood and live tissues of the animal until the animal dies unless the infestation is discovered and treated. The fly was eradicated in the southeast in the late 1950's after agricultural scientists discovered that the native female fly only bred one time in her lifetime. Huge laboratories were set up and billions of male screwworm flies were reared; then sterilized with radioactive cobalt and released by aircraft throughout the southeast. When the female fly bred with the sterile male fly, which was more healthy and vigorous than the wild male screwworm fly, they continued to lay eggs but the sterile eggs failed to hatch and reproduction of the screwworm fly in the southeast was terminated. Since then, efforts have been un- derway to eradicate the screwworm fly in the southwest but because the fly winters in Mexico, international cooperation, while greatly improved, has not made total eradication possible and the southwest is presently undergoing one of its worst screwworm years in history. The early summer small flowers are in conspicuous but the plant bursts into color in early autumn when its wine-colored pods pop open revealing brilliant orange-red seeds. The leaves usually turn bright red in autumn and if the shrub had more foliage it would really be a spectacular plant. However, it is sparsely branched and the leaves are not too numerous Hearts-a-Bustin is only one of many common names for Euonymus americanus. Others include "Puppy Toes", "Strawberry Bush", "Swamp Dogwood", "Spindle Bush", "Arrowwood", "Wahoo", and "Bur ning Bush". There must be many interesting legends surrounding the colloquial names of this autumn beauty. We would be interested to hear from our readers if they know the history of any of these common names. Valera Jessee Sterile Flies (From Page 1) than 50,000 cases have been confirmed in Texas alone. Southeastern officials became concerned a couple of weeks ago when a case of screwworms was positively identified in Sebring, Florida. This week a case was identified near Selma, Alabama. These two cases plus the suspected case in Georgia spurred agricultural officials into action in an attempt to ward off any threat from the pest which was once the scourge of farm livestock and wildlife throughout the southern half of the United States. All livestock owners are urged to check their animals carefully and report any suspicious larva findings to their county agent, veterinarian, or Georgia Department of Agriculture, Veterinarian Division, 19 Hunter Street, S. Administrative cost was approximately 1 percent. i Straight Line i \ ^* s I have three female rabbits that were born in June. One buck is the daddy of them all. Can I mate the females with him and if so, at what age? J. M. Thomasville According to our Vet division, it takes approximately 28 days for rab bits to have young. They do not advise mating litter mates. Rabbits should be able to breed when two to three months old. *** We have black hogs and it is very hard to get the hair off when dressing. Could you help with the problem? L. M., Springfield "Dehairing" of hogs can be most easily accomplished if the scalding water is brought up to a tem perature of 140 to 142 degrees and kept at that temperature. Let the hogs remain in the scalding water for a period of four to five minutes. This will prevent the setting of hair and over-cooking of the outer layers of skin. *** I have just a few hens so I can have my own eggs. But, each day I find out of the seven hens one or two eggs broken because of membrane shells. The hens are one year old. What is causing this? I feed them laying pelets, oyster shells, and corn. Mrs. C. H., Guyton Cackles, the poultry man, said that from your letter your hens evidently had a bronchitis type in fection at sometime during their growing period or after they came into laying. This often leaves the hens without the ability to produce eggs with hard shells. The only course he suggested was to destroy your hens and get some new ones as you cannot be sure which hen had the infection. The hens are safe to eat as well as are the soft-shelled eggs. *** How old do turkeys have to be when they start laying? Is it true that they only lay in March? Mrs. E. L., Cartersville Crackles came through again. Would you believe these birds only lay in the early spring for a period of 30 to 45 days? And, they have to be at least 12 months old to lay eggs. *** I have a young rooster with five toes on each foot instead of four. They all come from his legs, not twin toes. Is this rate? C. B., Lyons Cackles said yes. Oct. 20--8 PM - Special Breeder Cattle Sale, Turner Co. Stockyard, Ashburn. For info, contact H. R. Wiggins, Ph. 567-3371, 567-3881.
