FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rv/n, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 58 Crew Ga. Feed Assn. Promotes Industry The Georgia Feed Association, Inc. was organized in 1940. Basically it consists of a group of Georgia individuals and or- ganizations engaged in the production, distribution and feeding of mixed feeds for animals and poultry. Also included is a large group of allied members, individuals and organizations closely associated with the feed industry such as manufacturers and processors of, and dealers (Our guest columnist this week is J. B. Crew, President, Georgia Feed Association, Inc., 3166 Maple Drive, N.E., Suite-227, Atlanta 30305.) in, ingredients, machinery, containers and supplies used in the manufacture and distribution of feeds, as well as those involved in the transportation function. The objects and purposes of the Association are to foster the interests of its members and others related to the feed industry, to establish and maintain uniformity and equity in the customs, usages and practices of the industry, to disseminate valuable business information and to promote better communications among all who are associated with the industry. The purpose also is to assist in that enactment and enforcement of uniform laws and regulations which in their operation shall deal justly with the rights of feed manufacturers, dealers and customers. In its efforts to achieve these objectives, the Association works very closely with the Georgia State Department of Agriculture, the American Feed Manufacturers Association and the College of Agriculture of the University of Georgia. Normally the Association has three business meetings annually, a convention of the membership and a Board meeting in June, and two meetings of the Board of Directors, one in conjunction with the Georgia Nutrition Conference in February and one at the University of Georgia, usually held in October. Specific projects the Association has sponsored and/or supported include: Annual $1000 award toward a graduate scholarship for research work in poultry or dairy. Control and eradication of crotalaria. Close cooperation with the Georgia Department of Agriculture in matters pertaining to feed and ingredient standards and regulations. Elimination of the stamp system (Continued on Page 8) Wednesday, September 27, 1972 Number 39 Farm Land Edition The Fall Farm Land Edition will be published October 18. Read The Label Seed Label Requirements Assure Top Quality Seeds Georgia farmers will be putting a higher quality of seed into the ground when they do their fall planting this year. State seed laws, enforced by the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division, requires that each sack of seed to be labeled with descriptive quality information. "7^ r\ [ Reading the label is up to the \jrcl J^nffinCCrS I buyer. Germination percentage is a Win Top Honor label requirement on all farm seed. It's determined by growing seed samples in special growth chambers at Three engineers with the Georgia the Georgia Department of Extension Service have been honored by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers for "outstanding effort and achievement in the development of noteworthy educational aids." H. B. Goolsby, Lawton E. Samples and W. E. Seigler were named blue Agriculture seed lab. The number of seeds that produce normal sprouts is used to determine the germination percentage assigned to that lot. The germination test date also is required on seed labels. If the test was made more than nine months ago, the germination percentage may ribbon winners in the Society's annual educational aids competition. The awards were announced at the ASAE's 1972 convention in Hot Springs, Ark. Goolsby, Samples and Seigler were cited for their publication, "Pesticide Sprayers for Farm and Home." It is also illegal to offer seed for sale if the test is more than nine months old. No matter how good the ger- mination percentage looks, check the label again. The seed content of each sack of farm seed must be broken down by percentage to show the amount of pure seed, other crop seed, weed seed and inert matter, such as chaff. Noxious-weed seeds must be listed by name and number per . pound. Even with 85 per cent ger- mination, a sack that contains 95 per cent pure seed, and 2 per cent weed seed isn't doing a farmer much good. And, if the noxious weed seed count is high, a farmer is borrowing trouble. Using the per cent of pure seed and the germination percentage, a buyer can figure how much he's paying for seed that is expected to ________(Continued on Page 8) Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, third from left, joins Governor Jimmy Carter for the signing of the proclamation declaring October 1521 as "Farm Show Week" in Georgia. Growing Georgia's Christmas Tree Growers Association has been recognized as the fastest growing state association in the nation by the American Association of Christmas Tree Growers. The Georgia association topped 34 other states with the largest increase in membership of any association during the past year. Georgia now has 55 members in its association marking an increase of 35 over 1970-71 membership rolls. Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: Will someone help me? I need the post office town name cancellation mark (not U. S. Postal Service) of every post office that has ever 'been in existence and now currently operating in Georgia. Someone may have an old envelope or card that shows a post office was once there. How did your town or city get its name? What is the origin and history of the town post office? Through the MARKET BULLETIN, readers from every section of the state are reached. I hope to receive a letter hand cancelled from every post office in Georgia giving me some information about the town name. Other letters are welcome. Thank you. Alleen B. That warning was issued Georgia farmers this week by Lavaughn Johnson, Extension economist - farm management, University of Georgia. "If you haven't already recorded planting expenses and receipts for the first part of the year, now during the slack season is a good time to do it," he advised. "Don't rely on recall for these figures, come November of December." LEGALLY OF AGE Now that they are considered adults under the law, 18-year-olds are responsible for contracts they sign. , MODULAR? The tubers, which grow underground, vary in shape from oblong to elongated, in one piece or branched, and weigh three to four ounces. The skin of the tuber is very thin and usually light beige, but it can be brown, reddish or purplish. The flesh of the Jerusalem artichoke is white and crisp with a sweet flavor. The tubers shrivel quickly when ex- posed to air. The Jerusalem artichoke is not even remotely related to the globe artichoke nor does it resemble an artichoke in appearance. It probably got its name from its similarity in taste to the globe ar- tichoke. What's more, it has nothing to do with the city of the Holy Land. The "Jerusalem" in its name is an adaptation of the Italian word for sun- flower, girasole. Jerusalem artichokes were one of the few plants really cultivated by the American Indians. They were immediately popular among the early settlers and were exported to Europe as early as 1616. Jerusalem artichokes are available from October through March in specialty food stores as well as the MARKET BULLETIN. They should be stored in a cool dry place. Cultivation of Jerusalem ar- tichokes is quite easy. In fact you should plant them only where they will not be a nuisance. To start your J. A. garden, plant either the "eyes" of a large tuber or plant an entire small one. Valera Jessee Ga. Feed Assn. (Continued From Page 1) of collecting feed tonnage tax, in favor of a reporting system. Seed Label (Continued From Page 1) grow. Multiply the two percentages and divide the result into the price per pound. The answer is the amount paid per pound for pure germinating seed. It's an easy way to compare seed, and seed prices. Another label requirement is the name and address of the seller or shipper. When purchasing seed, be sure to obtain a bill of sale and keep it along with a tag from one bag of the seed. That is for your protection. FEEDER PIG SALES Sept. 27 -- Smith Bros., Barlow.
