Ga. Angus Assn. One Of Oldest 
 
State breed associations were created to serve a definite purpose; that of promoting their specific breeds and helping to provide a better marketing atmosphere for their members. The Georgia Angus Association, one of the oldest state breed organizations in the country, has been able to do just that for many years. 
This association, like similar ones, has had good years and 
lean years. It seems that when cattle are selling well, many breeders do not fe eI the need fo r a strong association. In reality, this is the most opportune time to build a strong well knit organization to further promote the product, cattle. As humans, we all have our own preferences, whether it be the

automobile we drive, the kind of cereal we eat, or the breed of cattle we are raising. The big difference is knowing the attributes of a quality product, in this case an ANGUS, and having an organization working for each breeder in the promotion of this quality product. 
One of the activities of the Georgia Angus Association has been an active sales program over the years. One of these annual sales, the Pride of Dixie Bull Sale held in Tifton, has proven to be a top market for buyer and seller alike for top quality bulls. 
Angus breeders of the Georgia Angus Association, as co-sponsors of a regional Angus event. The Great Southland Angus Futurity, have made a momentous step in showing to other breeders and the general public alike that we here in the Southeast can produce top quality ANGUS cattle. This show and sale has been recognized nationally as "one of the best of its kind". 
Never before has the enthusiasm for Angus cattle been as high as it is right now; and now is the time for one and all to unite with one goal in mind - to further promote a top quality beef producing animal ANGUS. 
The newly elected directors and officers of the Georgia Angus Association want to extend to each and everyone interested in Angus cattle an invitation to join forces with a dedicated group of interested Angus breeders. For further information write Box 593, Perry, Ga. 31069. 
 
Georgia Horsemen Promote Related Industries 
 
The Georgia Equine Board and the Senate and House Ag Committees recently met at Stone Mountain to examine ways to further promote the equine industry as well as to promote the agribusinesses related to the equine industry in Georgia. New Regulations 
To Aid Consumers 
New bacon packaging regulations and a new requirement that all cured meat products be labeled with an ingredient statement will become effective Feb. 19, 1973. 
Windowed bacon packages will have to expose at least 70 per cent of the length of a representative strip of bacon. This window will have to be at least I 1 12 inches wide. 
All cured meat products must be labeled to tell the consumer the ingredients used in their curing. Ingredients will have to be listed on all cured meats, and on the labels of products containing cured meats for example, frozen dinners containing ham. 
 
New Low Growing Shrubs Aid Georgia Landscapes 
 
Trees are important in almost any type of landscape development. Trees, along with shrubs, vines, flowers, and grasses, make up plant materials arranged to make homes, churches, schools, and parks more attractive and comfortable. 
 
Animal Scientist 
A prominent South African animal scientist, who has gained a reputation in the U. S. as a man who can judge the fertility of a cow by looking at her, will address visitors' to the Livestock Exposition '72 for beef in Tifton, Oct. 26-27. 
Dr. Jan Bonsma, head of the animal science department of the University of Pretoria, will speak to the region's beef producers 
 
There is a need for using more 
dwarf, semi-dwarf, or low growing shrubs in landscape plantings. This applies particularly in foundation planting, as many attractive buildings are covered up with plants 
that are too large. One solution to this problem 
would be to plant lower growing plant material. There are a number of relatively new dwarf type shrubs 
now becoming available in the landscape trade.

Some larger packages have less than smaller ones ... Look for the 
"net weight" and compare. You may be surprised to know that a large package may have less than a smaller package.

Dwarf Pittosporum and Dwarf 
Nandina are attractive and would eliminate much pruning often needed with the larger plants in these species. A promising conifer is Dwarf Shore Juniper that is lower 
growing than the regular Shore Juniper, a popular ground cover plant. 
Blue Rug Juniper is extremely low growing and is an excellent cover for sunny banks and other areas where a green mat of foliage is needed. Procumbens 'nana' is another good compact Juniper. 
A new Dwarf Cornuta Holly, Ilex 
cornuta 'carissa' is similar in growth 
habit of Rotunda Holly, but has only one spine to the leaf much like the Burfordi Holly. It is compact and low growing and should be an excellent shrub for planters, low foun- 
dation plant, and for mass plantings.

This week in honor of National Breakfast Month we are featuring breakfast recipes. September is National Breakfast 
Month. COUNTRY FRESH SCRAMBLED EGGS 
 
1 1/2 cups of 1/2 inch 
 
2 tbls. butter 
 
bread cubes 
 
5 eggs 
 
5 tbls. cream 
 
Dash salt 
 
Dash pepper 
 
Fry the bread crumbs in butter until crispy and golden, then 
 
drain them. Beat the eggs with cream and seasonings and 
 
begin scrambling in buttered skillet over lowest heat. As the 
 
eggs begin to set, add the fried bread cubes a few at a time. 
 
Stir constantly so that they will be well distributed through 
 
the finished dish. Bite size slices of American cheese may be 
 
added for a "cheesy" flavor to the egg mixture. Makes 4_ser- 
 
vings.

CREOLE SAUSAGE 
NOTE: This is just like any other homemade sausage except that it is hotter. 
Combine 2 pounds ground lean pork, 1 pound ground fat pork, 1 large onion minced very fine, 1 garlic clove ground in mortar with 1 tablespoon salt, 2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce, 2 teaspoons coarsley and freshly ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon ground thyme, 1 tablespoon minced parsley. 1 bay leaf crushed in mortar, and 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice. Mix thoroughly and use to stuff well-washed casings (buy from your butcher) or to form into patties. In either case, pan-fry or bake on rack until crisp but not dry. Makes 6 servings.

SWEET BLACKBERRY FILLED POPOVERS 
 
1 cup flour 1 Tbls. sugar 2 eggs 
 
1/2 tsp. salt 1 cup milk 
 
Use egg beater or mixer until bubbles show. Fill hot greased baking cups 2/3 full. Bake 25 minutes at 440 F. Popovers double in size and are dry and hollow. Custard cups do right well. Be sure to keep bottoms from browning. Cut slit in side of popover and put in sugared berries.

MOCK STRAWBERRY "FIG" PRESERVES 
 
5 cups raw figs 
 
5 cups sugar 
 
1 family size or 2 small packs of strawberry jello 
 
Wash, stem, and mash figs; bring to boil. Cook 20 minutes on 
 
low flame as it will burn easily. If you prefer a more jellied 
 
consistency, add 1 package of sure jell.

COFFEE CAN BREAD 
 
4 cups flour 
 
1 pkg. active dry yeast 
 
1/2 cup milk 
 
1/2 cup vegetable oil 
 
1/4 cup sugar 
 
1 teaspoon salt 
 
2 eggs Measure 1 1/2 cups flour into mixing bowl. Blend dry yeast 
 
into flour. Place 1/2 cup water into sauce pan with the 
 
milk, oil, sugar and salt. Heat only until warm. Add to flour 
 
and yeast and beat until smooth. Stir in eggs, and remaining 
 
flour and beat until smooth and elastic. Divide mixture into 
 
two well buttered one pound coffee cans. Cover with plastic 
 
lids and let rise in warm place about 35 minutes. Dough 
 
should rise almost to top of cans. Remove lids and bake at 
 
375 degrees for 35 minutes or until browned. Let stand in 
 
cans until bread shrinks a bit from sides and is easily 
 
removed.

GEORGIA BLUEBERRY FRITTERS 
 
1/2 cup sugar 2 cups unsifted flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 
 
1/2 tsp. nutmeg Grated rind of 1 orange 2 eggs 1 tsp. oil 
2 cups fresh blueberries. rinsed and well drained. 
 
Deep fat or oil for frying. In small mixing bowl lightly stir together blueberries and sugar; refrigerate for 1 hour, if juicy, drain well. In medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and orange rind. Add eggs, milk and 1 teaspoon oil; beat until smooth. Fold in blueberries. Drop by tablespoons into hot (375 degree) fat. Brown on one side for 2 minutes, turn and fry on other side ur,*il cooked through and brown 2 minutes. Drain on absorbent 
paper. Serve, sprinkled with confectioner's sugar, while piping hot as an accompaniment to ham or chicken or as dessert. Makes 2 to 2 1/2 dozen.

CHICKEN CASSEROLE 
 
4 or 5 Ib. hen 
 
1 cup celery, chopped 
 
2 or 3 cloves garlic, or 4 cans cream of mush-

1 can toasted slivered 
 
16 oz. extra thin 
 
almonds 
 
spaghetti 
 
2 or 3 green peppers,

Cook hen until tender, have plenty of broth. Remove hen 
 
from bone. When cool, cut into bite size pieces. Tenderize 
 
celery, pepper, onions and garlic in small amount of oil (do 
 
not brown). Add chicken, mushroom soup, and almonds. 
 
Cook broken spaghetti in broth until tender. Mix chicken 
 
mixture with cooked spaghetti. Put into casserole (or several) 
 
and freeze. When ready to serve, sprinkle grated cheese over 
 
top and cook in 350 degrees oven for 30 minutes. Serve with 
 
tossed salad, garlic bread and dessert.

Cut nine inch square. Draw line from corner to opposite corner. (They will cross in exact center of large and small square.) From each outer corner, measure four and a half inches (edge square) and indicate by mark such as dot or circle. Measure in three inches from dot - all four sides. Sesame is an annual herbaceous 
plant which grows primarily in the 
subtropics. It grows to a standard 
height of three feet, has a bran- 
ching stem, leaves of various 
shapes and rose or white flowers. 
Sesame has been grown since 
time immemorial for its tiny grayish- 
white or black seed which have a 
sweet nutty flavor and yield a bland 
oil when pressed. 
Sesame is fondly remembered 
from the ARABIAN NIGHTS in which AM Babe the Sailor 
overheard the robbers directing the 
door of the cave where their 
treasurers were hidden to "Open 
Sesame". The term "open sesame" 
came to be used because the 
sesame seeds pop out of their hulls 
very easily. 
The seed was brought to the 
southern United States by the 
African slaves who called it 
"benne" or "bene" seed, an African 
name still used today in the South. 
Sesame seeds are particularly 
popular in southern cooking, 
especially cakes and cookies. 
Commercial production of 
sesame takes place primarily in 
Africa and India. However, sesame 
can be grown as an annual in 
Georgia.

Ready Garden Now For Fall Planting 
Now is a good time to get your garden ready for early fall plantings of greens and salad crops. Mix fertilizer and organic residue into soil and prepare to plant after the ground has been settled by a good rain. 
If nematodes have been a problem in your garden, treat infected areas with an approved nematocide or fumigate with methyl bromide. Follow package directions for amounts to use and method of application. 
Plant beets, carrots, chard, kale, lettuce, mustard, onions (seeds or sets), radishes, and turnips. Try several different kinds of lettuce butterhead, romaine, and green or bronze leaf. 
For best germination of lettuce and other small seeds, keep the soil moist and cool with daily sprinklings. 
 
I would like to know if there is a time of year that poison ivy or oak does not affect a person. If this time is when the sap is down, how can a person 
determine this? I was in the garden and in spite of the fact that I had a long 
sleeve shirt and gloves on, I have it on my arm. I cannot understand how it

Anytime sensitive persons come in contact with the leaves, stems, roots they may have a reaction. Of course, spring and summer arc the periods when most reactions occur because more foliage is growing and developing. Even in the dead of winter reactions can occur if you come in contact with a crushed stem or broken root. Instances such as yours where reaction occurred even with long sleeves are not uncommon. The contact may have occurred as you removed the shirt as well as the volatile oils penetrating the fabric and coming in contact with the skin. Regar dless of clothing, you should always wash thoroughly with soap and water immediately after contact with the poison oak, ivy, etc.

I have some Black Angus cows which have developed a cough. What will make them do this?

There arc several possibilities for this cough. Mow the pasture and get rid of any weeds, etc. which may cause this problem. If this does not help, you should contact a veterinarian and have him check these animals to see if there is any infection involved.

What will kill Privet Hedge? I have tried 2-4-5-T, but the hedge always

2-4-5-T or 2-4-1) or combinations of both will eliminate most woody plants. However, it may take several applications to kill the tops and the roots. The first application may kill most of the top growth but new growth will occur on the lower portions of the stems or the root system. As soon as this new growth occurs it should be resprayed. Some homeowners find it to be more effective by cutting the bush down and painting the stub with concentrated material. Remember in using these as sprays or paints they will also destroy other flowers, shrubs, trees, vegetables, etc.

Store brand names are most often just as good and often cost a lot less. Some brand names you know and buy regularly, but it is not a wise idea to buy a quantity of items that you know little about. It is wiser to try a little and find out if you will be happy with a large quantity. 
Do you listen while your grocery checker calls out every item? If he does not then you should ask him to do so. NO one can remember ALL prices and special prices are often not marked on the cans. It costs you money for an item you might not have ordinarily bought when clerks ring a regular price instead of a sale price.
