FARMERS & CONSUMERS Market Bulletin Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Volume 58 Tommy Irvin Stone Mountain And Horse Shows The number of visitors to Stone Mountain Park is increasing each year, and as they come they are constantly finding additional facilities and attractions. Horse Shows and horse show enthusiasts are increasing in number each year also. Already a large number of shows are booked throughout the state for the coming year, several of them at Stone Mountain Park. A new covered, super-size show arena is now under construction at Stone Mountain Park. Located in the scenic Park near a wooded oasis, it will be the largest such facility in the South. And completion should be in time for March shows. As a member of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association and a farmer, the new arena is of special interest to me. The largest public riding stables in Georgia are at Stone Mountain Park. Last year visitors rented 16,669 horses, and an average 33 horses were boarded there each month. Those of you with horses of your own can imagine the feed required for a herd of 98 horses. The annual feeding, in fact, includes 381,000 pounds of hay, 125,000 of oats, 84,000 of sweet feed and 1,800 pounds of salt. All of which comes from our Georgia farmers. Many Georgians probably don't realize that Stone Mountain Park became self-sustaining on July 1, 1971. Since that date it has been operating without state funds. It is now sustained solely from revenue received from the sale of annual parking permits, as well as an income received from concessionaire and park operated attractions. This makes it the only state park in Georgia that has achieved selfsustaining operation at the present time. During 1971, Stone Mountain visitors brought over 16 million dollars in travel-based revenue into Georgia. This, in turn, means that more than $500,000 in sales tax return has been generated by the Park. A special effort has been made to retain the natural beauty of the Park, and to invoke a sense of history to the visitor. Many especially enjoy the depiction of Georgia agriculture and agribusiness from a bygone era the Park's Industries of the Old South area. The area includes a rustic grist mill where corn is ground into meal. There is also one of the few remaining cane grinders and sorghum mills, a peanut boiling pot, and an antique cider press that extracts the golden juice from Georgia's famous apples. The entire park, with its emphasis on nature and 19th century atmosphere, takes visitors back to "the way it used to be" in the South. Wednesday, January 19, 1972 Number 3 Representatives Provide Hot Line The Georgia House of Representatives Public Information Office has a toll-free Information Line for citizens who have questions about House activities. The toll-free number for persons outside the Atlanta calling area is 1800-282-5800. For persons in the Atlanta calling area the number is 656-5083. Citizens may use the line to leave messages for House members, to check the status of certain bills, to find out how their legislator had voted on a certain issue and even to get the name or mailing address of their legislators. "The Information Office stands ready to answer just about any question pertaining to House activities," House Speaker George L. Smith said. "We encourage citizens to call the free number when they have a question about what's going on in Atlanta." Straight Line I have a problem with soy bean meal. When it gets wet it has an awful odor, worse than chicken litter. Then some kind of fly lays eggs on this meal and they hatch out brownish looking looks like a screw worm. I want to put this meal in a compost pile and need a method to control the odor while it is decaying. Will field lime help? F. A., Dahlonega Mr. J. R. Conley, of the Feed, Fertilizer, and Pesticides division, advises that the odor problem which you have with the wet soybean meal is a typical one and the decaying meal makes an ideal breeding condition for flies. This material can be composted and you should add some lime to hasten the decomposition process. However, this should be builder's lime rather than field lime or agricultural lime and should be added at the rate of approximately two pounds per 100 pounds of meal. It will not hurt to also add some nitrate of soda or other nitrogen material to get the composting under way. A light application of 5% Malathion dust from time to time should alleviate your fly larvae problem. Low Cost Greenhouse Completely Automated Researchers of the Agricultural Engineering Department have developed a small greenhouse that is completely automated, uses generally available materials, requires only limited skills for construction, and is very low in cost. The most recent greenhouse design has several innovations of particular in- It has a double-plastic cover supported by natural arches made of black polyethylene plastic water pipe slipped over 3/4" steel pipe driven into the ground. The plastic sheets are applied on the external side of each set of rafter arches. This Your Bulletin Last week the Governor presented to the Georgia Legislature his budget proposal for the coming fiscal year. In this proposal the appropriation for the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin was drastically cut. This budget cut would destroy the BULLETIN as a weekly farmers and consumers publication. If you are interested in helping to save the BULLETIN in its present form, please let your local representative hear from you. The budget proposal will be acted on during this session of the legislature, so let your representative hear from you this week. Homeowners Beware Fraudulant Sprayers Georgia homeowners and farmers, especially in southeast Georgia, should be on guard against spraymen who promise results such as control of all insects and nematodes with one spraying. There have also been reports of fraudulent spraymen who advertise that one spraying will prevent cold damage as well as make all nonbearing fruit and nut trees bear once again. Beware especially of out-of-town or out of area spraymen that are unknown or cannot be located in the spring when the controls do not work. Check with your county agent for insect and disease recommendations. eliminates having to attach plastic sheets to the underside of an arch. The watering system uses plant controlled subirrigation developed at the University of Georgia. The greenhouse benches are formed of boxes lined with black polyethylene sheets to make them water tight. Lightweight four inches by eight inches by 16 inches concrete blocks are then placed in the box, a water line is added and an inexpensive float valve is used to control the water level in the growing system. Soil can be placed on the growing system in several configurations. A frame can be constructed for the top of the blocks, filled with soil and used as a regular bench. Another arrangement is to place a thin layer of sand on top of the blocks and grow plants in peat pots, fiber pots, fiber market packs, or in flats with hardware cloth bottoms. The purpose of the sand is to provide good contact between the blocks and the container. The water level is normally maintained at 3/4 inches below the top of the blocks, but can be adjusted upwards to furnish more water, or down if the soil is too damp. Normally the soil should be dry on top but damp just below the surface. The heating and cooling systems are modifications of commonly-used greenhouse systems. The nine feet by 16 feet house has a fan for ventilation, and an evaporative cooler which operates in the summer when the fan operates. Heat is supplied by an electric heater with a fan and a bulb type thermostat. During the winter months the electric heating cost of the nine feet by twelve feet house averaged a little over fifty cents per day. The unique growing system has worked equally well inside and outside the greenhouse. Tomatoes have produced over five pounds of fruit per square foot of area. Bell peppers have produced almost as well. Other products which have been grown successfully are squash, eggplant, cantaloupe, lettuce, hot pepper, strawberries. The plants (Continued on Page 8) Page 2 We Get Letters Dear Editor: Recently at a family gathering, hoghead cheese or souse meat as some know it, was served. Cooked mashed irish potatoes were added to it and it was very good. The grease was absorbed which so many of us cannot eat now. Thought this would be worth passing on to others. Mrs. Gus Howard 2223 Wheeless Road Augusta, Georgia 30904 Dear Editor: I'm confused about purchasing shrimp. I recently bought some "Alaskan" shrimp and it turned out to be just bits and pieces of shrimp all breaded into a large fillet-looking serving. My husband was most disappointed and I would appreciate your telling me what to look for on the label of these shrimp packages. Name withheld by request Cartersville, Georgia (Editor's note: Peeled and cleaned shrimp are headless shrimp with the shell and intestinal tract removed. They may be sold raw or cooked. The cooked shrimp should have an attractive reddish tint and a mild odor. They may be purchased fresh, frozen and canned. Frozen raw or fried breaded shrimp are peeled and cleaned shrimp coated with, a batter, breaded, packaged and frozen. Breaded raw shrimp must contain not less than 50 percent shrimp meat, according to USD I standards. The shrimp that you purchased should have been labeled as shrimp fillet and not represented as whole, frozen, breaded shrimp.) Page 8 THE MARKET BULLETIN Warm Weather Damaging To Georgia Peach Trees C. D. Spivey Extension Horticulturist What is the warm weather doing to the peachtrees in Georgia? Are the peachtrees going to bloom prematurely ? What is the cold requirements all about? These are some of the questions being asked because of the unusually warm weather we have been having. First of all the kind of weather we have been having is not good be- Lily of the Valley is a single species of very fragrant perennial herbs, native to almost the entire Northern Temperate Zone and grown over almost the entire world. In old Teutonic Europe, it was considered the special flower of Ostara, Norse goddess of the dawn. In Sussex, England, there was a legend that the flower first sprang up in St. Leonard's Forest from the blood that the Saint had shed when he fought and overcame a local dragon. It has also been considered a fine producer of love potions, which is perhaps why, in the language of flowers, Lily of the Valley signified "Return to Happiness." The Lily of the Valley is primarily a shade plant. It can be made to grow in the open and will do fairly well in ground shaded part of the day. However, it prospers under the heavy shade of trees. Large colonies of the plant are often found that have formed a solid, sod-like mass covering the ground. In this condition, the plant is likely to be mostly foliage with very few flowers due to overcrowding. Beds should be dug up and replanted at least every three years. The pip of the Lily of the Valley is the propagative part of the plant and is usually offered by dealers in the spring for planting. Pips should be planted close together, ahout 1 1/2 inches deep in good, rich garden soil. Layer the bed with a topdressing of well-rotted manure. Lily of the Valley is widely forced for winter blooms. Plant pips in pure sand or a potting mixture of 2 parts sharp sand, 1 part loam, and 1 part leaf mold or peat moss. Keep pot in complete darkness by covering or putting in dark closet for 10 to 14 days. Remove cover gradually as the pips begin to sprout. These plants need plenty of water and as they come to floweriag, as much light as possible. Valera Jessee cause the peachtree must go into complete dormancy or a rest period during the winter. This all begins when the tree sheds its leaves. During the post growing season, the trees have worked hard to manufacture its supply of food to be stored within itself to live on during the winter. And, the unseasonably warm weather could cause the rate of respiration to be accelerated, and cut short the supply. Back to the bit about dormancy and/or rest period. Peachtrees require an accumulation of cold hours at 45 degrees F or below, depending on the variety as to how many. For the varieties grown in deep South Georgia, the minimum is 650 hours. For varieties grown further North, the requirements would range up to 1050 hours for certain varieties. Usually February 15 is the latest date for accumulation, therefore, we are now in a critical situation since very few hours have been recorded at 45 degrees F or below. The latest research data show that accumulative hours can be lost by conditions that we are now experiencing. The most serious damage that could occur now is for a sudden and severe drop in temperature ~ say in an eight hour time. The trees' conductive tissue is active and with no leaves for shade, the conductive tissue temperature could be unusually high. Then the sudden drop - we have winter injury. Experiments at the Georgia Experiment Station has proven this can happen. The answer about premature bloom is no. The problem is the trees will not bloom next spring or fully leaf out if the cold hours are not satisfied. The leaf buds require the cold hours too. However, not the same in all cases as the flower buds. Elberta requires 850 hours for its flower buds and 950 hours for its leaf buds to initiate growth. Lets have faith that things will work out and we will have a good peach crop in 1972. (Straight Line I have two large pine trees around which I planted ivy some years ago. The ivy has grown up the trees almost to the top and is very dense. I would like for it to grow to a height of about six feet from the ground and in attempting to do this I cut all the vine above six feet. But the ivy above this height continues to thrive. How can I kill this without harming the tree? W. S., Waycross The vine experts advise that this ivy should die after a period of time. However, you can spray the part you want to kill with 2-4-5 T. *** We have several young holly trees that have come up around our yard. Will these bear fruit or will some be male trees or is there any way to tell? T. C., Thomaston There is no way to tell about your holly trees until they bloom. We have mailed you a pamphlet we have which we trust you will find helpful. Low Cost Greenhouse (Continued From Page 1) were fertilized by adding soluble fertilizer to the water in the system. The operation of the complete greenhouse system permits the operator to take off week-ends, or even a vacation. It makes working with plants a pleasure, and doesn't require attention seven days per week. The greenhouse can be constructed for less cost than any other complete system that we have been able to find. The material cost for the complete nine feet by 12 feet greenhouse is less than $400, and the house can be constructed from material at the site in approximately 40 hours.
